SPECIAL PROMOTION

HAND IN HAND – BEGINNING TO END Creating spectacular spaces requires attention to every detail. Working hand in hand with each and every artisan, installer and manufacturer of the very special finishes, fixtures and furnishings that make extraordinary spaces come alive is essential.

Jeff Eakley, senior designer and director of new product development at Bilotta Kitchens was given carte blanche to design a kitchen filled with the finest in domestic and European details. Eakley, part of the Bilotta Kitchens firm for over 40 years, wanted to complement the state-ofthe-art cabinetry with leading-edge appliances. “When we were gathering insights from this particular client one of the most important components of the space was the appliances,” said Eakley. “Their “wish list” included multiple cooking, cooling and prep areas and they wanted high-performance along with high design. It was clear that Gaggenau appliances were going to be part of the design package. JEFF EAKLEY We called our long-time appliance partner, Royal Green (www.royalgreenny.com), to introduce the Gaggenau portfolio. When our client saw the line she was knocked off her feet.” “It was a joy to be a part of this project,” said Rob Satran, CEO, Royal Green. “We’ve partnered with Bilotta Kitchens for over 20 years. The Bilottas are artisans. For this project we were able to participate in the creative process, anticipating how best to bring forward the right appliance solution. We look at the specifications and symmetry of the space to see how best to align all components. Gaggenau offers a very special, avant-garde product. It’s modern and high end and it speaks to the customer. Working hand in hand with the Gaggenau tech team we ensure every detail is considered.” The joy of this dramatic space is found in every detail. The magic of a meticulous collaboration between the designer, manufacturer and installers — working hand in hand, attending to each and every article — created a kitchen that delivers perfection, beginning to end. To learn more about Gaggenau appliances, visit Royal Green or find a showroom near you at www.gaggenau.com/us/visit-us.

How do you add pizzazz to a powder room? “For a recent project, I used Callidus Guild’s Aperion in Dahlia on the walls. The design studio’s principal, Yolande Milan Batteau, has an encyclopedic knowledge of decorative and applied arts. Everything she touches is instantly elevated.”

EDITOR’S LETTER

Rolling With It The pandemic’s enduring, tenacious clutch has been trying, to say the very least, but on the plus side, there have been some clarifying moments. I don’t know about you, but I have been looking at things differently, if not rethinking them altogether. Take the hay bales on the fields around Bridgehampton and Sagaponack: In the past, I’ve probably noticed a bale here and there as I’ve sped by on the way to an appointment, but an entire field, and one so beautifully arranged? They’re all over the East End right now, and I’m convinced that the farmers who make them are artistic geniuses. ■ Speaking of art, at Guild Hall’s recent annual summer gala, I detected a new buoyancy among people. Despite their caution, guests were genuinely happy to see colleagues and friends again, to share stories and smiles, rather than grudgingly drag themselves to “another charity dinner.” The dress code was black, white, and red, everyone looked resplendent against a backdrop of East Hampton’s Hook Pond, and the light was nothing short of otherworldly. Since when has being fortunate enough to attend swell happenings in New York and the Hamptons been a bummer? Some things actually haven’t changed.

Seeing Red (clockwise from near left) Decorator Katie Leede and Averill Powers at Guild Hall’s annual summer gala. C&G contributing editor Baroness Sheri de Borchgrave, me, HC&G publisher Pamela Eldridge, and C&G editor at large Alejandro Saralegui. Hay bales on Sagg Main Street.

THOM FILICIA

Decorator Thom Filicia grew up vacationing on lakes in upstate New York, “waking up to the sound of boats on the water and immediately putting on my bathing suit,” he recalls, “the only outfit of the day.” For this issue’s “Water Baby” (page 70), he unveils the interiors he designed for a new boathouse on the shore of his beloved Skaneateles Lake. “There’s such a beautiful mix of textures in a lake environment— it’s nature’s harmony. I like to approach my work with the same sensibility.”

The principals of the New York– based design firm Carlos David are a match made in heaven (see “Fresh Start,” page 96). “David is more of the decision maker and editor,” Carlos Garciavelez (far right) says of his partner, David Lawrence, “and I’m the designer. We complement each other.” To which Lawrence adds, “We understand our clients’ lifestyle, down to what they want in patterns, fabrics, and colors.”

READ MCKENDREE

“The variety of architecture and interiors I get to see while I’m on assignment really keeps me inspired,” says photographer Read McKendree, whose work has appeared in House Beautiful, Elle Decor Germany, and Architectural Digest online. During a recent shoot of a Bridgehampton residence (“Fresh Start,” page 96), the lensman was particularly taken with the East End’s charms. “I really like how every Hamptons community has its own personality, and I can see that in the homes as well.” —Shannon Assenza

When it was time to perform a major renovation on his own 5 bedroom residence, one of the Hamptons most respected luxury builders engaged Barnes & Coy for some of the design elements while incorporating many of those incredible finishes and amenities that he used elsewhere, creating an amazing residence for himself and his family spread out over 6,000 sq. feet. Water Features Landscape architect Michael Derrig praises a much-overlooked garden essential

Bubbling With Energy A project in East Hampton includes a fountain centered within a tightly clipped boxwood hedge and a backdrop of two box-lined beds punctuated by crape myrtles. See Resources.

People are naturally drawn to landscapes with water, even if they don’t realize it—and even when they’re just looking at a picture of a garden with a water feature. Water imparts a certain tranquility to a garden and can really transform it. And water features can also drown out noise from a busy street.

Say you want to have a pond on your property. What do you need to think about?

You’ll want it to be as natural-looking as possible, so a liner with stone edging will do, along with a submersible pump that pushes water through an internal gravel filtration system. You can also build a pond with gunite and a filtration system for crystal-clear water and a crisper look. I once built a natural pond with a clay bottom, stocked with pickerel and bass.

“Even a swimming pool can count as a water feature”

Water Worlds (clockwise from near right) A fountain lies partially hidden from view in an East Hampton garden. A large basin-style fountain recirculates water. A bench acts as a focal point beyond a zero-edge reflecting pool. Paley Park, a small pocket park in midtown Manhattan, is celebrated for its waterfall and limbed up honey locust trees. See Resources.

In general, it sounds like the water needs to keep moving.

Yes, it helps keep mosquitoes away.

Well, don’t put one in your front yard—unless you live at Versailles! I am fond of rectilinear design, so I like to position a fountain on a center line, at a point that’s not immediately visible. Try to think of a fountain as a hidden gem, something charming that you stumble upon while exploring a garden. That might be easier said than done, though, as you are almost always going to need electricity, which might determine, or even limit, where you can install the fountain. But it doesn’t need to be hard-wired. You can get a self-contained fountain at a garden center and just plug it in. Surprisingly enough, there are some really attractive ones on the market. What’s your favorite fountain design?

Paley Park in Manhattan. The wall of water there really hushes the city—you don’t even know you are in the center of Midtown. The

park is mostly hardscaping, but everything was chosen with such care: see-through wire-mesh chairs, marble-topped tables, low planters, and honey locust trees that filter light beautifully against the backdrop of that perfect fountain. Are there other water features to consider?

Sure. Even a swimming pool can count as a water feature if you design it carefully—more as a reflecting pool, rather than as a bright blue resortstyle pool. And a water feature can be as low-key as a simple dish or footed birdbath in which you might float a flower or two. At home I keep a giant clamshell, which I just rinse and refill when I’m watering my pots so that it stays fresh. —Alejandro Saralegui

nderstanding the difference between a simple alteration and full-on tailoring is key to bespoke dressmaking, according to Bellportbased fashion designer Elisabetta Bellu, a native Sardinian whose formidable skills are something of a family affair. “I learned the trade as a young girl,” recounts Bellu, who honed her craft under the tutelage of her grandmother, a seamstress and patternmaker, and her great-aunt, who ran a sewing-supply store. “My great-aunt would bring me zippers and threads, and I began experimenting with scarves, learning by making mistakes. I bought my first sewing machine at 14 and later worked on a serger, a gift from my mom. Eventually, my grandmother would come to me for sewing advice.” Upon earning an alta formazione (master’s degree) in fashion design from the Accademia Costume e Moda in Rome, Bellu began interning for several designers, including Milan-based Antonio Marras, a fellow Sardinian native. “My design inspiration started there,” she says, “fine-tuning my technical skills as seamstress, tailor, patternmaker, and designer.” In 2016, Bellu moved to the United States,

where she now runs her own business out of a second-floor studio in her Bellport home. Initially commissioned to make beach coverups for a local boutique, she later expanded her inventory to include short dresses in cotton and linen. Her latest collection evokes a breezy ready-to-wear sensibility inflected with European elegance and femininity. Dresses even have floral names, like Camelia and Azalea, and bestsellers also include silk caftans and kimonos. When making a garment with a fine material such as imported European linen, Bellu steams it first, to avoid any shrinkage after the fabric is cut. “When you place the pattern,” she adds, “you have to be sure that you are following the grain of the fabric.

Otherwise, the garment will be defective, with creases and waves.” Using weights to keep the pattern in place, Bellu measures the fabric with a straight-edge ruler parallel to the selvage (the prefinished edge of the linen) before cutting. Particularly with custom tailoring, Bellu favors “cuts that are more feminine, even embellished with embroidery. Fashion designers can have big ideas, but knowing the technical part helps you solve construction issues, so I can address a client’s needs from every angle. It’s exciting selling my pieces in local stores, but when I have a private customer, I see it as a mission to help give them what they really want.” —Doug Young

PULLING UP STAKES The pandemic taught a lot of people to treasure their homes more than ever before, but not everyone. Perhaps three residences became one too many for 80-year-old Martha Stewart, who sold her East Hampton abode—featured in HC&G four years ago and last listed for $8.4 million—to publishing executive Kenneth Lerer earlier this year. Stewart now splits her time between Bedford, New York, and Skylands, a 1925 estate originally built for Edsel Ford in Seal Harbor, Maine. The domestic

sales increased 55.9 percent and the average sale price jumped 15.6 percent, to more than $2.4 million, per appraisal firm Miller Samuel. Over the same period, however, inventory fell 43.4 percent. “The pace has slowed due to a lack of properties,” says broker Justin Agnello of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. “With little left to purchase, buyers are turning to teardowns and vacant land instead. The market is desperate for new product, so prospective sellers have a great opportunity to sell quickly at a high price right now. A historic renovation 18 years in the making is finally complete in Bridgehampton. Destined to become the Bridgehampton Museum when it opens next year, the 200-year-old Nathaniel Rogers House recently emerged from a painstaking restoration by the Bridgehampton Historical Society and Museum and the Town of Southampton, which purchased the property in 2003. Built in 1824 in the Federal style, the mansion gained a Greek Revival façade in 1840 when its new owner, portrait artist Nathaniel Rogers, added a portico, columns, a cupola, and several rooms onto the front of the house. THE MARKET IS HOT RC Atlee and Adrianna Nava answer the question that buyers and sellers are asking - will prices fall this Fall?

“There was a moment when anything with a roof was selling,” says RC Atlee. According to his data-mining business partner Adrianna Nava, that time has passed. “The volume of market activity in the Hamptons has begun to subside, but low levels of supply relative to buyer demand are keeping things robust.” Now, the quality of inventory is under a microscope. “Homes that meet buyer criteria continue to trade for above the asking prices, but homeowners who reach too high are feeling a stronger negative response,” says Nava. When working with clients to establish value and hedge against possible shifts in the market, Nava says “It’s important to put the Hamptons market in context with Wall Street bonuses, GDP, wages, unemployment and overall economic forecasting. those indicators, Hamptons real estate remains strongly postitioned against inflation and possible fluctuations. It could be that 10 years from now, today’s prices will have doubled.” “Sellers and their agents are going to start rolling out the carpet for buyers again as inventory increases and attitudes shift,” says Atlee, for whom gaining access to listed properties has been more challenging than ever, due to pandemic precaution and sellers’ general confidence in the market. “I don’t think demand or pricing are going to deplete too significantly before 2022, but I think seller egos will.” RC Atlee and Adrianna Nava track Hamptons Market Data and report on luxury housing trends for clients and industry insiders at their website TheHamptons.market

More space and lower prices continue to draw Manhattanites to Brooklyn, and some new structures are rising above the fray. Take Dumbo’s 168 Plymouth, architecturedevelopment firm Alloy’s conversion of two historic factory buildings.

With 46 units and four distinct offerings (including two types of lofts, townhouses, and penthouses that range from one to four bedrooms), the development’s remaining residences start at $2 million. In downtown Brooklyn, 11 Hoyt is Chicago architecture firm Studio Gang’s first residential building in New York. Luxuries abound at the 57-story, 481-unit development, which boasts a 27,000-square-foot elevated park, a fitness deck, and indoor and outdoor pools. Although the building won’t be complete until later this year, buyers have already started moving into the apartments, which start at $695,000 for a studio and top out at $4.3 million for a four-bedroom. Just a few blocks away, in Brooklyn Heights, the Studio DB–designed Symon saw brisk sales even during the pandemic, with two of its three penthouses going into contract last year. Prices start at $825,000 for a studio, and the last four-bedroom penthouse can be had for $3.35 million. Units at Boerum Hill’s 561 Pacific—designed by ODA and replete with private terraces, a roof deck,

and a garden—range from $675,000 for a studio to $3.795 million for a three-bedroom. And at Park Slope’s One Prospect Park West, Brooklyn-based interiors firm Workstead is leading the renovation of a 1920s building that houses 64 one- to four-bedroom apartments ($2.125 million to $5.975 million). A native of Los Gatos, California, he has played Raoul in the 25th-anniversary Broadway run of The Phantom of the Opera (left), has acted on the Fox series The Following, and has appeared in Evita and My Fair Lady at Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theater, where he currently hosts the weekly virtual performance series “Sip & Sing.” Additionally, he often conducts the audience warm-up for Live! with Kelly and Ryan, a job he describes as “an absolute blast because you have to tune into people’s energy.” Barisich, who has split his time between Southampton and New York City since 2013, added real estate to his résumé in 2019, not long before theater work shut down as a result of the pandemic. “Good actors are good empathizers, which is important in real estate,” he muses about his second profession. “You have to put yourself in your clients’ shoes, thinking about both their style and their needs.” —A. W

hile growing up outside Syracuse, in upstate New York, decorator Thom Filicia fell in love with nearby Skaneateles Lake, one of the state’s 11 Finger Lakes. (Stick with “skinny atlas,” and you’ll be close enough to the pronunciation.) Long a summer resort destination, it’s the second cleanest lake in the United States, right behind Lake Tahoe, and its beauty has not been lost on those who live and have lived on the lake, including one of the Roosevelts who wasn’t president.

Filicia, who is now more famous than some of his high-profile clients, eventually bought a “campsite” on the lake and transformed it. “I like things that feel both timeless and timely,” he says, summing up his signature style. His lakeside makeover is even the subject of one of his books, American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating a Beloved Retreat (Potter Style). As with most lake communities and small towns, news travels fast, especially among year-rounders. One of the Skaneateles locals, named Mac, grew up in a small farming community at the south end of the lake and used to go fishing here with his dad. “I had heard september 2021

of Thom Filicia, of course,” he recounts, revealing the tale of how he got to know the decorator. “My family used to watch him on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. My wife, Rochelle, who was then my fiancée, started asking around, and some mutual friends introduced us. We met him, hit it off, and have been friends ever since.” When Mac and Rochelle got married, in 2014, “A friend tipped me off that a lake property was for sale, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it would be ours,” he continues. Mac and Rochelle enlisted the help of Filicia and architect Leif Kallquist to build their dream home overlooking the lake. “It was snowing when they were framing the house,” Rochelle recalls, “and we had just found out that we were going to have our first child.” (They now have three.) The project also, fortuitously, allowed for a boathouse. “Everything on the lake is done in a boat,” Filicia says, “from visiting your friends to going out to eat and doing your grocery shopping.” His concept for the couple was simple. There’s a “garage” for the family boat and a storage and maintenance room beside it, plus ample decking. Inside, up a spiral staircase, lies an open space september 2021

with all the eccentric angles one might expect from an attic. At one end of the longer axis is a sitting room, which mirrors a dining area with a wet bar. A dormer, anchored by an ample daybed from Filicia’s line for Vanguard Furniture, sits in the center. The walls and ceilings (which can be hard to distinguish) are all clad in a custom tongue-and-groove paneling. To make sure the wood could be installed perfectly, every shape in the common spaces was drawn in precise detail. “The goal was to make the structure seem like an old boathouse that’s been refreshed, but not radically overdone or too specific,” says Filicia, adding that “it doesn’t have recessed lighting or track lighting,” but rather table lamps, hanging pendants, and a floor lamp that provide light “the old-fashioned way. To me, it’s like the ultimate summer fort. It’s playful, so the kids like it, but it’s also playful in a way that makes adults like it, too. They use the space like a pool house, only it’s next to a lake instead of a pool.” ✹ 76

T

he first time I touched a calfskin, in a tannery in rural Argentina, my reality shifted. My father was living in Buenos Aires, where he was making women’s clothing, and I was immediately drawn to the leather and curious about where it came from. So my father set me up on a day trip to visit tanneries with a chemist from Holland. Clothed in our white lab coats, we went from tannery to tannery to learn about the process of tanning and finishing skins. On the way, we drove past slums and over a bridge. It was late 1977, and if you made eye contact with guards on the bridge, you had to pay a bribe to pass, and if you didn’t pay, you were imprisoned or thrown into the river. It was the wild west—untamed, gunslinging—and I fell in love with the food, the women, and the leathers. That first tannery was an epiphany. I saw what happened to the byproducts of the meat we all consume mindlessly, often not considering the source beyond the grocery store shelves. I was awed by the artful process of turning a leftover hide into something gorgeous that could bring people joy and make them feel beautiful, rather than just discarded into the trash after the meat was packaged. Today, I sell these skins. Draping them, feeling their texture and sensuality, inspires me artistically. I feel the grain and stretch while I consider cuts and connections, and that includes the way I employ the material in my own home in Wainscott. My design and architectural aesthetic is deeply influenced by unexpected life turns and lots of travel. I was 19 when I decided to take a year off from Wharton and backpack through Africa, Italy, France, Turkey, Sweden, and Brazil, september 2021

often sleeping under tables in the street. Returning a year later, the University of Pennsylvania campus felt strange. I had been the Quakers quarterback and also played on the championship tennis team. I quit both, and quit Wharton, and decided to study architecture and art history. I trained with Buckminster Fuller, John McCoubrey, and Louis Kahn. Their impact on me is pervasive and enduring, resonating in every nook, bend, and line in my home. I bought my house in the early 2000s and immediately felt a connectedness with the land—the airy, open two acres, its extraordinary trees, and the magnetic energy of the ocean only a mile away. I could smell the salt from the sea and hear the hum of the nearby train, and I knew the dilapidated 1950s teardown could become my nirvana. A New York City boy, my life was about to change. Although houses in the Hamptons are often largely white and cedar, mine has a clean-lined, black exterior and natural pine interiors, an almost earthen approach that’s similar to my respect for an animal’s spirit and life force. to be a manifestation of my imagination, so I sketched and built everything without the help of designers. I had custom furniture made in Bali and fought with builders to stick to my unorthodox blueprints. Everyone advised against the cement countertops and brick wall in the kitchen, but these are among my favorite details. The “viscera” of my home is rooted in primal elements: leather, shearling, wood, cement, and metal, all tactile and embodying energy. The decorative pieces include artifacts, objects, and antiques found during more than four decades of travel across South America, Africa, and Europe. Just like the cycle of life that I see in animal hides, antiques have their own rhythm,

passing through humans, generations, and civilizations, representing tangible memories of important times and places. My backyard pool bar, the “Pick Up,” is a replica of a shack I stumbled upon in Mexico. I had asked for a drink from a “waiter” who turned out to be Sting—something I think of every time I glance out my window. It took five different washes to get the patina on the exterior just right. I look forward to embracing the evolution and erosion of time on my property, similar to the way I watch new details emerge on my leathers after years of age and wear. Just like the skins that I collect and sell, my house is always changing. It’s rough, raw, and unique. ✹ september 2021

T

ravel to and from the Hamptons has always been a fraught affair, but the Long Island Rail Road, the Hampton Jitney, and private cars and jets have nothing on the trips people used to take in order to claim their piece of the summer pie. In the early 1920s, George de Man’s grandmother and mother (both named Josephine, and both only children) made the journey from the middle of the country to Shelter Island. His grandmother, de Man recounts, “was a very sophisticated lady living in Arkansas, 1,500 miles away, and even though it

was pretty provincial there, she read The New York Times and found listings for Doctor Pettit Camps, which eventually became Peconic Lodge and then, many years later, the Perlman Music Center.” The trip took two days by train. “My grandmother could not have known then that her daughter would end up buying a home on Shelter Island in the 1950s. There were many trips over the years to Peconic Lodge, the feeling of which would be familiar to anyone who has seen the movie Dirty Dancing.” With its stunning hilltop setting and water views, nearby Shelter Island Heights captivated de Man’s mother, who set her sights on an

1870s Victorian overlooking the Peconic River, with Greenport in the distance. Originally developed as a Methodist campground retreat in the late 1800s, the Heights remains a private community to this day, its picturesque Union Chapel, built in 1875, still in use. As a summer resident in his youth, de Man remembers foraging for local mussels and clams, sailing out of the yacht club (a private venue for Heights residents only), and pitching golf balls in the park across the street from where the Prospect Hotel, a favorite haunt of Clark Gable’s, once stood. (It burned down twice.) De Man is now the steward of the home, preserving its historic details and period character, a refreshing antidote to Hamptons excess. The amply sized fireplace room is to this day a favorite gathering spot and focal point for his family. “It’s different from other houses on the waterfront because it isn’t broken up into little rooms,” he says. “It’s a cruciform room, like a church, and the home’s coziest space, with panoramic windows overlooking the water.” Family and friends have converged here often over the years, including “my mother’s cousin, Ellis Rabb, and his then wife, the actress Rosemary Harris. Another was [Frank] Eric Wollencott Barnes, author of The Lady of Fashion, and we also hosted two of the island’s best-known resident writers, Time art critic Robert Hughes and historian/novelist Robert Carse.” Painted Nantucket Red, the Carpenter Gothic–style structure is a virtually untouched time capsule, decorated with a mix of original furnishings and vintage finds from Marika’s on the island and Lydia’s Antiques and Preston’s Chandlery in Greenport—plus a dash of Ikea here and there. edge, is actually the original front of the house, predating the roads that were laid after the home was constructed, and the octagonal kitchen was added during the 1930s. (Residents of the Heights previously took their meals at the Methodist assembly’s communal dining hall.) The tower room above the kitchen is a favorite spot of de Man’s, pasted with magazine covers collected during his years as an advertising executive at such titles as The New Yorker, Southern Living, and Coastal Living. Other personal memorabilia and ephemera are abundant: dog show ribbons won by his mother for her champion Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, a Fragonard needlepoint found at

the Shelter Island dump (referred to locally as the Goody Bar), and a piece of plate glass that “came out of the back of a Volkswagen—we turned it into a cheese tray.” Seashells, carnival glass, lobster platters, wicker porch furniture, original stained glass insets and Gothic windows: All serve to tell the story of this very special house, but perhaps the stenciled quotations within various baywindowed rooms say it best. “A house by open water floats on its own mystic dreams,” says one, perhaps only slightly bested by “The wise spells of a great house beguile all those who enter.” ✹ september 2021

T

he Bridgehampton home that Nancy McCormick shares with her husband and three children is so thoroughly attractive, instantly welcoming, and subtly curated, it’s hard to imagine it ever looking anything but pristine. But not long ago, it was nearly in shambles. “My housekeeper called during the middle of Christmas vacation to tell me the living room was submerged in water,” recounts McCormick. It turns out a pipe in her older son’s bathroom had burst, and because the family was traveling for the holidays, nothing could be done until McCormick returned. But she hit the ground running. “As soon as I got back to New York,” she says, “David and I headed straight to Bridgehampton to try to figure out what could be salvaged.” David is David Lawrence, her longtime decorator and friend, who has worked with McCormick for years, long before he met his partner, architect Carlos Garciavelez, and formed the Manhattan-based design studio Carlos David. The prognosis on the house was grim: “Ninety percent of the furnishings were destroyed,” Lawrence reports, “and all the walls, floors, and ceilings were completely saturated. Even the windows had to be replaced.” Not surprisingly, what started as a rescue mission became a nearly full-on do-over. “Well, you know how it is,” Lawrence concedes. “You change one thing, and you start seeing other things that could stand a little freshening up.” Like tearing down the wall between the kitchen and butler’s pantry and creating one gleaming white room, for instance. In the end, McCormick estimates, about half the place was

he place works in the winter as well as in the summer, and we were able to focus on areas in the house where we spend the most time” rebuilt, a major transformation from the house that it had started out as when she first moved in, pre-children, about 15 years ago. “I loved the earlier version of the home David did for me,” she says, “but as the kids got older, we started spending more time here year-round.” In rethinking the interiors, the envelope was brightened with new bleached flooring and walls painted Benjamin Moore Super White, Lawrence’s favorite white. Then the accessorizing began, starting with geometric-motif carpets and rugs that bear a slightly retro ’70s groove. “For Carlos and me,” Lawrence says, “decorating is about layers. It’s how you make things look authentic, like people have lived with them over time. I don’t like rooms that look like a designer walked in and just waved a magic wand.” Not all the rooms are white, however, and there is a lot of blue— not so much navy, as in the home’s first iteration, but moodier, more introverted. And while the house generally comes across as light and bright, some rooms have been cozied up with darker hues. “The dining room started out white,” says Lawrence, “but it looked a little sterile, so we installed a soft gray Phillip Jeffries grass cloth instead.” The furniture, which includes a handful of custom pieces by Carlos David, is “intended to look like a collected assortment of family, vintage, and antique items,” comments Lawrence, among them some mid-20th-century stunners that are not “the usual suspects.” Case in point: a pair of vintage Philip Arctander armchairs in the living room, upholstered in their original 1950s sheepskin. Virtually nothing seems out of place, from the 18th-century painting in the dining room—which hung in McCormick’s beloved grandmother’s house in Seal Harbor, Maine—to the contemporary rug in the library by textile designer Madeline Weinrib. So, can a flood have a silver lining? “It resulted in an unplanned update to something we’d done quite a few years ago,” McCormick reflects. “Now I feel like the place works in the winter as well as in the summer, and we were able to focus on areas in the house where we spend the most time.” That includes the kitchen, which was “confining, because the original house was small,” Lawrence adds. “Now the whole family fits, with room to spare.” ✹ 102

SUSAN’S KITCHEN

Purple Majesty A late-summer dessert that’s bursting with flavor

ITALIAN PLUM CRISP

Just Plummy Abundant right now, Italian prune plums are fantastic for baking and wonderful in this crowd-pleasing dish, but any variety of plum will work.

For the topping: 1 c. plus 2 T all-purpose flour ⅓ c. light brown sugar 2 T granulated sugar ¾ tsp. ground cinnamon ½ tsp. ground cardamom ¼ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. coarse salt ½ c. (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces ½ c. sliced almonds

Make the topping: Combine the flour, both sugars, and the cinnamon, cardamom, baking powder, and salt in the bowl of a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture becomes clumpy and looks moist throughout. Transfer to a bowl, stir in the almonds, and refrigerate or freeze until ready to use. Make the filling: Preheat the oven to 375˚F. In a medium bowl, combine the plums, sugar, and flour. Spread the fruit in a 3-quart baking dish and sprinkle with the topping. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown. Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving with a drizzle of heavy cream or ice cream. The Sands Of Time Artist Mark Wilson and style maven Claudja Bicalho in the Walking Dunes, not far from their shop, Lazypoint, in Amagansett. See Resources.

MARK WILSON & CLAUDJA BICALHO Claudja: “We met in Manhattan 22 years ago, on a beautiful spring day. I was happily walking to work when I noticed this guy staring at me. Fifteen minutes later, he showed up where I worked! He introduced himself, and then we went our separate ways, without exchanging numbers.” Mark: “I had seen Claudja several times over several months, but only from a distance. ‘Who was this beauty?’ I wondered. One day, while I was standing on a SoHo street corner with a friend, he asked me if I was seeing someone, and I said, ‘Yes, I’ve been seeing this woman.’ And at that moment, there she was, crossing West Broadway right toward me. I had to do something!” Claudja: “We eventually bumped into each other again at Indian Wells Beach. Our kids got along, and so did we. After a few ‘play dates,’ we started our summer romance, which is still going strong. In 2010, we opened Lazypoint, and in 2013, Amagansett became our full-time home.” Mark: “I’ve always been fascinated by random juxtapositions, and curious about nature’s transcendent aspects.” Claudja: “And I am deeply attracted to creative people and handmade things. I hope we’ve created a stage on which we can beautify life.”
