YEARS OF TIMELESS DESIGN

EDITOR’S LETTER

All in a Day’s Work After a COVID 19–induced hiatus, C&G Media Group is proud to be hosting the 2022 HC&G Innovation in Design Awards (IDAs) in just a couple of weeks, on August 4. We are so excited to be presenting awards in multiple categories to top design talents in our region, but none of it would be possible without the participation of our wonderful judges, all of whom met at the Ligne Roset showroom in Manhattan last month to peruse dozens of entries across multiple categories. I also attended the get-together, and even though I was dying to take a sneak peek at the submissions, I refrained from reviewing any of them until after the judges had made their final decision. Later that day, I hopped on the Jitney for an afternoon appointment and then had the good fortune to crash Compass real estate broker Jack Pearson’s rescheduled-at-the-last-minute annual “rose viewing” cocktail at his house in Water Mill. Pearson is a gentleman rosarian nonpareil (he has won countless awards from the Southampton Rose Society), and I have never been able to attend this event in the past. Well, it finally happened, and I was bowled over by the roses that grow in profusion on his stunning property. Talent on the East End also grows in profusion, and that’s what makes my days so fulfilling and fun.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

Innovative Thinking To paraphrase Charles Dickens, it is the best of times, and it is the worst of times. While the design industry is booming, other businesses are challenged, and many people are concerned about a recession. But history has proven that companies with strong branding programs emerge from recessions with a larger market share, and the sponsors of the upcoming HC&G Innovation in Design Awards (IDAs) have fully embraced this philosophy. Design Within Reach, the event’s title sponsor, continues to maintain its high visibility after a magnificent presence at the Hampton Designer Showhouse presented by HC&G last fall (cottagesgardens.com/hds2021). Joining in the fun alongside DWR at this year’s IDAs on August 4 are fellow category sponsors Brown Jordan, the Carpetman by Stark, Plexi-Craft, Room & Board, Systems Design, and VIP cocktail party host Fiber-Seal, all top-notch firms that are signaling their commitment to the interior and garden designers, architects, and builders with whom they work so closely. The highlight of the evening: the ARCHITECTURE presentation of the Innovator Award to Bates Masi + Architects renowned architect Lee Skolnick, in honor West Chin Architects & Interior Designers Young Projects of his enormous contributions to the architecture and design world. For tickets GARDEN DESIGN Hollander Design Landscape Architects and more information, go to cgidas.com/ LaGuardia Design Oehme, van Sweden & Associates hamptons. I hope to see you there!

DAVID ROGAL AND RON CARLIVATI

“I like an understated palette, whereas Ron leans toward more color,” interior designer David Rogal (far left) says of the house he shares with his husband, television writer Ron Carlivati (“Origin Story,” page 46). “I texted David to double-check that he wanted a black door, but then wrote ‘unless’ and sent him a photo of a yellow door,” Carlivati adds with a smile. “He let me have that pop of color, and that’s why I love him.”

FARRIN CARY

Interior decorator Farrin Cary’s first thought about her approach to the design project featured in this issue’s “Hidden Gem” (page 78) was “how to furnish the house while complementing the architectural lines of the structure. It’s like stepping into a sculpture.” While collaborating closely with architect Nick Martin on the hilltop Montauk home, she adds, “We both deeply considered the beauty of natural light. The thoughtful placement of windows and skylights creates a gorgeous tapestry of shadow and light.”

JOSHUA MCHUGH

In addition to shooting the East Hampton home featured in this issue’s “Origin Story” (page 46), Joshua McHugh put pen to paper, giving HC&G’s readers a detailed account of the house’s evolution. “Writing about the project compelled me to go into depth about the homeowners and their ultimate goals,” McHugh reports. “In doing so, I was able to gain a far greater understanding of and appreciation for the renovation process and the successful design that emerged.” —Shannon Assenza

ON GEORGICA POND A love story about a creative landscape company and a passionate client

SPECIAL PROMOTION / Photos Courtesy of Harmonia Inc

W

hen a client comes to a design firm, there’s no telling the journey that lies ahead. It could be a six-month project, a two-year transformation, or turn into a relationship that will evolve and grow for a decade. That’s exactly what happened when a Hamptons homeowner, passionate about his estate’s landscape, discovered Roxine Brown of Harmonia Inc. Unfolding like a novel, their collaboration over the next 10 years created this artful sanctuary. A decade of delight for both parties, the homeowner beams, “Working with Roxine and her team is effortless.” From commissioning custom bricks to build a wall that appears old-world traditional to using an 150-ton crane to move a respected tree, the project has been full of bold choices. Today, the estate is sophisticated and serene, but still evolving. Landscape changes and renovations are never over if you’re a landscape lover.

GARDENING

Hot for Hydrangeas Something for every bed, border, woodland, and wall 1

T

he big pom-poms of the popular ‘Nikko Blue’ hydrangea are practically synonymous with summer in the Hamptons, but there are so many other varieties to choose from. Consider the seven beauties featured here. —Alejandro Saralegui

2

1. ANNABELLE HYDRANGEA

(Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’) Zones: 3–9; height: 3–5 feet This stunner boasts giant panicles of white flowers that fade to green from June to September. Its parent is an East Coast woodland native, so it likes shade but can take sun with sufficient moisture. If you’re looking for a more diminutive version, try the new H. a. ‘Invincibelle Wee White’, which tops out at 30 inches. (Hydrangea serrata ‘Bluebird’) Zones: 2–7; height: 3–5 feet Dripping in a heady hue similar to that of its popular ‘Nikko Blue’ cousin, this more delicate hydrangea still packs a punch in a border. The flowers will eventually fade into multiple shades of purple and rose, and if you don’t deadhead them before winter, the dried flower heads will catch the snow beautifully.

(Hydrangea x) Zones: 6–9; height: 4 feet The first trailing hydrangea—a multiple hybrid just introduced this year—Fairytrail Bride is ideal for pots or training over a ledge. It blooms all season, doesn’t require deadheading, and attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

TIPS

• As their name suggests, hydrangeas like water. Keep them moist, especially if they are planted in full sun.

4. CLIMBING HYDRANGEA

(Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris) Zones: 4–8; height: 30–50 feet This Japanese native is slow to start, but hard to stop once it gets its groove on. Use it to hide any ugly surface, climb a tree, or even double as a groundcover. It puts on quite a show at bloom time, and the cinnamon-colored bark is attractive when it exfoliates in winter.

• Don’t prune most hydrangeas, except for late-blooming varieties. Removing dead branches is, of course, always okay.

5. OAKLEAF HYDRANGEA

(Hydrangea quercifolia ‘Snow Queen’) Zones: 5–9; height: 4–6 feet Another hydrangea native to American soil, this variety features lush blooms and rough-textured oak-tree-like foliage that turns burgundy in the fall.

6. LIMELIGHT HYDRANGEA

(Hydrangea paniculata ‘Limelight’) Zones: 3–8; height: 6–8 feet A great hydrangea for cutting and drying, with large panicles of lime-colored flowers that fade first to rose, then to tan as winter approaches. Prune it in late winter.

7 7. RED SENSATION HYDRANGEA

(Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Red Sensation’) Zones: 5–9; height: 2–3 feet With red blooms from spring through fall, this hydrangea is a garden workhorse. It looks particularly dramatic corralled inside boxwood-edged beds.

• Adding Holly-Tone in the spring will intensify the blue of some hydrangeas, particularly the popular ‘Nikko Blue’. • Schizophragma hydrangoides (false hydrangea) is a good substitute for H. petiolaris and will stay closer to a wall. • Cut hydrangeas dry beautifully in a vase. Just let the water evaporate.

he old-school trope of farmers sharing their yield “over the fence” with neighbors might typically be associated with vegetables and eggs, but for floral designer Nathaniel Savage, cuttings and field finds from local gardeners and landowners are the holy grail. “Being a forager and having relationships with these people,” he says, “is one of the benefits of living on the North Fork. I love bringing the outdoors in and making something beautiful.” A Virginia native, Savage moved to the area more than two years ago and began doing floral arrangements for the North Fork Table restaurant, which led to a commission for a ceiling installation in the tasting room at Macari Vineyards. “I fell in love with the raw coastline, the community, and the people, so I decided to stay,” recounts Savage, who launched his own installation and floral design company, Navanel, last year. This spring, he partnered with Lori Guyer of the Southold shop White Flower Farmhouse and opened White Flower, a Europeanstyle garden store where he creates untamed arrangements that nod to traditional Japanese ikebana and wabi-sabi. “Those disciplines function as a base layer for me, but I also incorporate ideas I absorbed while working at Kinfolk [a lifestyle magazine] and at Stone Barns in Westchester. And Lori allowed me to use a space above her shop as a studio. For anyone who creates or makes, space is the foundation. It can be quite shackling if you don’t have it.” Savage approaches his large-scale installations based on “what is happening outdoors—how an exhibition or event is put together, and if there is a flow or a narrative to it. I envision how the event will take place, typically from left to right, and consider other factors such as negative space, colors and textures, and the aesthetics and needs of

both the client and what the space calls for. Then there is an engineering relationship: It’s important to figure out what is attainable and practical.” For smaller-scale arrangements, Savage seeks out “the oddities” to make every creation unique, with its own flow. “I’ve developed an affinity for vintage flower frogs,” he says, “although they are expensive and not easy to find.” He also prefers environmentally friendly blocks of wool fiber over floral foam, since the former is biodegradable, sustainable, and compostable. “The floral industry is incredibly wasteful, so I always have conservation and preservation in mind. Even when I’m using foraged materials in an arrangement, I get permission from the landowners, and I never take anything from wetlands or protected areas. I want to respect where I’m sourcing, how I’m sourcing, and how it will be used, and I consider in advance how I can integrate these pieces with other flowers or botanicals. In a way, my foraging is almost premeditated.” —Doug Young

DEEDS DON’TS The Inside Scoop on East End Real Estate

Every summer, the East End ushers in an enticing new batch of businesses, and this year, formerly sleepy Shelter Island is buzzing more than ever before. Dating from 1927, the Pridwin Hotel and Cottages is welcoming visitors again after having shuttered for improvements in November 2019. A collaboration between hospitality group Cape Resorts (which also runs Baron’s Cove in Sag Harbor) and the Petry family, which has owned and operated the resort since 1961, the revamped Pridwin boasts 49 hotel rooms, as well as 16 private cottages, a spa, a restaurant, and a bar, all overlooking Crescent Beach. “We sought to preserve the property’s Adirondacks summer-camp feel,” says Cape Resorts’ director of design, Colleen Bashaw, who has worked closely on the project with her brother, Cape Resorts founder Curtis Bashaw. “Original floors, fireplaces, wicker furnishings, and three chandeliers salvaged from the 1927 dining room give the place a sense of familiarity, but it’s whimsical, too.” In Shelter Island Heights, after years of construction delays and changes of ownership, the 35-room Chequit hotel has reopened, just in time for its 150th anniversary. THIS ISSUE’S

BIG

DEAL

Architecture and garden enthusiasts alike will be hard-pressed to find a nail or a blade of native grass out of place on this $11.5 million listing on 4.63 acres overlooking Accabonac Harbor in Springs. Current owner Edwina Edwina von Gal, a landscape designer and founder of the nonprofit Perfect von Gal Earth Project, has called the property home since 2003, but she’s embarking on a new adventure that includes conceiving a house on what she calls “a big chunk of wild nature.” Von Gal is only the third owner of the four-bedroom, 3,870-square-foot cypress structure, which architect Hamilton Smith—a partner of Marcel Breuer—designed for himself in 1974. An adjoining parcel with a buildable lot features a cottage with an addition designed by Joe D’Urso, says Sotheby’s International Realty broker Jenny Landey, who shares the listing with the firm’s Zacheriah Dayton and describes the entire package as “a truly compelling compound.” According to von Gal, the house “feels like a boat floating in its own nature preserve. A few times a year, when the tides are right, the marsh disappears and the house is magically perched above the water. The modernists called this type of house ‘a machine for living,’ but to me, it’s more like a jewel box.” —Alyssa Bird

hen your contractor says there’s a way to do it faster, better, and for less, chances are good that the expert knows best. David Rogal and Ron Carlivati had spent six months living on, and plotting the renovation of, their newly acquired property on the East Hampton–Amagansett border when their contractor stepped in and suggested that they reevaluate their approach. The couple had purchased two adjacent 1950s cottages with a plan to expand the larger into a main house and retain the smaller as a guest space. For the main house, their intention was to preserve the original Hamptons ranch-house charm—shingled siding, paned windows, and peaked roof—while adding more modern touches, specifically a flat-roofed primary bedroom wing and a glass-box entry foyer.

But as their renovation plans progressed, Rogal recounts, their contractor convinced them to “knock it down and start again” in order to create a new home that would ultimately be superior to an older one with grafted extensions and additions. Now convinced to build from scratch, Rogal and Carlivati nevertheless elected to integrate many of the design elements they had planned on from the beginning, “ticking all the boxes,” Rogal says, “of the old and the new.” For starters, the core of the main house maintains the overall footprint and aesthetic of the original. Working in concert with Murdock Solon Architects, Rogal and Carlivati elaborated on this footprint, creating a unique setting where different elevations express distinct personalities: one side looks like a traditional shingled Hamptons house, and the other more like a California mid-20th-century modern, with a long deck and glass

doors spanning its length. The interior detailing further reflects this duality, commingling contemporary skylights and glass walls with trad beamed ceilings and classic wainscoting. The entire structure maintains a thorough dialogue with the outdoors, thanks in large part to a distinctive shingled exterior “screen” of sliding barn doors that extends from the main house and delineates areas of the yard. Rogal, who had seen a similar motif employed at a home in Montauk, describes it as “just the right element to evoke the atmosphere we wanted: shingled surf shack meets Neutra modern.” The house that now stands on the property today is “a very personal space, different from what I might do for my clients,” continues Rogal, a decorator who worked for many years at Vicente Wolf Associates before going out on july 15, 2022

And some of the furnishings are pieces I’ve collected over the years, including many gems from the streets of New York City that have been given a little TLC and repurposed.” Despite the home’s clean-lined aesthetic, the decor is anything but monastic. Rogal tends to lean toward “things that have crust,” such as an 1800s work bench nestled into the glass-box foyer and a carved African barrel side table in the living room. Perhaps the couple ultimately saved time and money by cutting bait and starting anew, but in spirit the project will always be evolving. lejandra Rossetti had always thought that a country getaway in Litchfield, Connecticut, would be her weekend ideal, but she did a 180 when she saw an advertisement for a three-bedroom shingled farmhouse in Southampton. She and her husband had been living in Brooklyn at the time, and they immediately hopped in the car and drove east. “When I saw it, I knew it was the one,” recalls Rossetti, a senior vice president of business development at Sotheby’s who recently relocated to Miami. “We put in an offer on the spot, and by the time we got back to Brooklyn, I had the whole 60

For years I had kept binders full of inspirational images, and I could finally put into action all the fetishes I had been dreaming about.” Built in 1910, the residence had its quirks, but thankfully only cosmetic updates were necessary. “I wanted the house to feel light and airy, and painting the floors white went a long way,” she says. “And then I set about filling the space with interesting pieces that stop you in your tracks. We have collected lots of treasures and mementos on our travels—in addition to gifts, estate-sale finds, auction coups, and family heirlooms. Complementing the light-and-airy atmospherics is a color palette mostly centered on blue, white, and yellow. “I associate these hues with the Hamptons,” Rossetti says. “They remind me of the sky, the sand, and the sun.” Accordingly, she chose toile de Jouys in blue, yellow, and black-andwhite as the principal design motifs in the bedrooms. “My first boss had a lake house in New Hampshire where all the bedrooms had toile de Jouy,” she 62

bowls, seashells, and abandoned birds’ nests. The deeply personal assemblages, Rossetti says, make the house “feel like a walk down memory lane.” Rossetti and her husband also reimagined the grounds, adding a rose garden, five different water features that cancel out noise from a nearby road, a bluestone patio, a new lawn, and a fire pit. “The swimming pool and a carved pavilion featuring four female figures were the only things on the property

Years ago, I read a gardening book that described a garden as a home without a roof, with the plants serving as the walls, and I like the idea of creating a sense of mystery and discovery. This garden encourages you to move to different areas depending on the time of day, whether it’s breakfast on the patio, afternoons by the pool, or nights around the fire pit making s’mores and playing charades. hen a pair of longtime summer renters on the East End finally decided to build their own place in the Hamptons in 2020, they turned for design help to decorator Michelle Gerson. The couple had admired Gerson’s work for friends and “were drawn to her aesthetic,” the wife recounts. “Plus, she doesn’t work in only one style.” When Gerson came to the project, the house consisted of just a vacant lot in Bridgehampton and a set of architect’s plans. “From

the start, my clients were very involved, and I worked on the house with them from soup to nuts,” says Gerson, adding that they had asked for “a clean aesthetic, something comfortable for easy living with friends and family.” (The couple entertain often and also have two college-aged kids.) Eventually, the vacant lot evolved into a relaxed 7,000-square-foot modern getaway with seven bedrooms for lots of overnight guests. “Our goal was to create something streamlined and modern, but with personality,” Gerson says of the design process, “and july 15, 2022

also incorporate a lot of color, which was exciting.” It didn’t hurt that the husband owns a contracting company specializing in interior corporate construction. “He appreciates good design, and it was so nice not to have to explain everything, like the beauty of a finish or a certain material.” As a couple, the designer says, her clients are “in sync in their taste,” but each had specific demands. The husband loved the wire-brushed European white oak flooring that Gerson proposed, but he didn’t want to see any knots in the wood. “We went through every single board, one by one, to avoid knots,” she reports. And the wife wanted an all-white kitchen, which posed a bit of a challenge to Gerson. (“I’m not the biggest fan of all-white kitchens because I’ve seen so many of them.”) To twirl up the standard-issue sea of white, she used Calacatta gold marble for the countertops and backsplashes and applied shiplap vertically to the custom cabinetry’s doors and drawers. “Ground-up builds are hard,” Gerson reflects. “You don’t get to pick out furniture or any of the fun stuff until you’ve spec’d july 15, 2022

the windows, chosen the plumbing fixtures, and ordered your tiles and appliances. We spent a lot of time with the builder selecting everything that goes into making a home.” The house’s first “wow” moment is the main staircase, a sculptural assemblage of white oak and glass. Because Gerson likes to avoid large expanses of drywall, she applied custom paneling made of large wooden squares separated by minimal reveals. “It turned into a very big math equation,” the designer recalls, “because the walls on both sides of the stairs are not even, and there are openings, so not all the squares are the same size.” Also statement-making, the formal dining room is as much an art installation as

a gathering place. Gerson commissioned decorative finisher Heather Jozak to paint the matte stucco walls a blue ombre. And seeming to glow from behind the hulking custom dining table, a glass-walled wine cellar mimics the look of a control room—albeit one for oenophiles. For the serene, neutral primary bedroom, Gerson designed a “big fat bubble” of a bed and went for subtle materials and “a lot of texture, which gives a quiet palette a certain richness.” The home’s biggest jaw-dropper is arguably the adjacent primary bath, also serene but entirely clad in 22 book-matched slabs of breathtaking lilac marble. “It wasn’t easy to install,” Gerson recounts, “but it was so worth it!”✹ july 15, 2022

A

s residents of the Hamptons, interior designer Farrin Cary and architect Nick Martin are both intrinsically familiar with the landscape and well versed in restraint, preferring to take their cues from nature. But the property featured on these pages threw them a curve ball: The one-acre spread funnels 45 degrees to a low point in the center, forming what looks like a kettle hole. “We were dealing with several constraints, including drainage issues and tight setbacks,” Martin recalls of the project. “However, the site is also wonderfully unique, since its

forested view is so uncommon in the Hamptons. The goal was to retain the indigenous woodland and animal life and disturb as little as possible, to feel really connected to the earth.” Indeed, Martin’s 4,000-square-foot flat-roofed minimalist structure is so seamlessly embedded into the property, it seems as if it were always meant to be there. Hemmed in by walls of concrete and stone, a long drive curves gracefully down the hill to the entry façade, where the home appears to be a single story, although four bedrooms are deftly tucked into a lower level beneath the front elevation. These offer both privacy and direct access to the yard, outdoor entertaining area, pool, and july 15, 2022

pool house. The architect deeply considered how the clients would experience the outdoors in relation to both the home and the surrounding forest. “I looked at the geometry of the structure in terms of positive and negative space,” says Martin, who devised an outdoor sitting area beneath a pergola that “offers a connection to the house.” Accessed via the main living area, it beckons with a dining table, ample sofas, and an outdoor fireplace. Interior and exterior materials are intentionally commingled to achieve a comprehensive whole—particularly dark beams that have been charred and oiled in the style of shou sugi ban, the Japanese weatherproofing technique. Along with oak, stone, and cement, the overall palette is soothing, texturally interesting, and awash with light, thanks to five large skylights punctuating the flat roof. july 15, 2022

In deference to this subtle framework, the decor sings in a low-key way. “Farrin has a certain sophistication about her,” Martin says of Cary. “We share a similar ideology about creating natural, yet elegant spaces.” A California native, Cary is adept at bringing the outdoors in. “I wanted to preserve the most beautiful aspects of the architecture and light,” she says, “so I didn’t overcrowd the rooms with furnishings.” Woven light fixtures, vintage accessories, and streamlined seating pieces covered in family-friendly, durable fabrics add

character without compromising “the lines of the house, which are lovely and very plumb. The rounded fixtures stand out and cast a beautiful glow at night.” The designer and her clients let loose a bit in the pool house, which doubles as a second office space. “We went with a playful blue fern wallpaper and 1950s-style furniture,” says Cary. “Even though the house is minimalist and has a lot of clean lines, it’s also inviting and warm. During the entire project, integrating the furnishings with the architecture was the end goal.” ✹ july 15, 2022

Focus on the Future: “Long Island’s vintage variation challenges me,” says Hargrave, who specializes in blending (often with three Merlot clones from a single vineyard) and makes 20 labels a year. “People are starting escargot and oyster farms nearby, so it’s an exciting time to be here.”

Kareem Massoud

Next Generation: Giovanni Borghese, owner Provenance: Son of Marco and Anne Marie Borghese, who acquired Hargrave Vineyards in 1999 and renamed it Castello di Borghese. Focus on the Future: “Our next step is to explore planting Northern Italian varietals to pay homage to our roots,” Borghese says.

Next Generation: Gabriella Macari, director Provenance: Daughter of founders Katherine and Joseph Macari, Jr. Focus on the Future: Macari boasts 160 acres under vine, with Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc as its calling card. “Our dry, delicious, sparkling pink pét-nat Cabernet Franc, Horses, is a biggie for us, in addition to agrotourism,” she says.

Borghese Vineyard & Winery, Cutchogue

Next Generation: Joey Wölffer, co-owner Provenance: Daughter of the late vintner Christian Wölffer, she runs the estate with brother Marc and partner/winemaker Roman Roth. Focus on the Future: In addition to producing several popular rosés, Wölffer reports that the “winery continues to push forward with new innovations. Christian’s Cuvée Merlot 2019 will be back this summer, and our 2017 Cool As Well Blanc de Blancs will be released next spring for our 35th anniversary.”

Next Generation: Kareem Massoud, winemaker Provenance: Son of Ursula and Charles Massoud, who founded Paumanok in 1983. Focus on the Future: A specialist in Chenin Blanc and other Loire varieties, Massoud will soon be “adding Melon de Bourgogne, the Loire grape of Muscadet wine, which is ideal with Long Island oysters. And I’m making more méthode Champenoise sparkling.”

Next Generation: Maria RiveroGonzález, owner Provenance: Rivero-González’s father, José Antonio Rivero Joey Larrea, owns a winery in Mexico Wölffer where his daughter learned the trade. She acquired Martha Clara Vineyards in 2018 and renamed it RGNY. Focus on the Future: “Sauvignon Blanc does amazingly well for us,” says Rivero-González, adding that she also finds Viognier to be wonderfully expressive. “I like experimenting, so we are aging Sauvignon Blanc in amphorae. And I’m excited about our dry Riesling, which is floral, with chamomile on the nose.” —Baroness Sheri Zander Hargrave de Borchgrave
