Hartford Designer Showhouse Making a triumphant return, the Junior League of Hartford Designer Showhouse was presented by exclusive media sponsor CTC&G. To transform the home, a select group of interior and landscape designers, led by interior designer Anthony Baratta as honorary design chair, worked with generous sponsors to restore, renovate and reimagine a historic West Hartford Tudor. EDITOR’S LETTER

Design Inspiration I felt as I accompanied my boss, the decorating editor of a well-known national magazine, to view the Kips Bay Showhouse. For a young editor in those days, it was like hitting the jackpot to see the showhouse before the public. Not only were you able to see the rooms without crowds, but you also could talk to the interior designers about their spaces. These were the heady days of Mark Hampton, Mario Buatta, Albert Hadley, and many others; you get the vibe. I still get chills as I think of those days. Showhouses, especially Kips Bay, held a magical view into the world of interior design. Here, designers were dreaming—and designing—for themselves. I always walked away inspired. ■ Over the years, I’ve jumped at the chance to visit showhouses even while traveling. I remember a beautiful house in Newport and another on Nantucket when Adaire was a toddler. As a design editor, I get to know new designers, and see trends and am inspired to dream. And dream I did as a freelance editor! I was asked to participate in the Deshon-Allyn Designer Showhouse on the grounds of the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London. I quickly called a very talented decorative artist, Mary Van Vliet, to join me in designing a room. With no real budget, we decided to take on part of the unfinished attic with the concept of creating a magical and unexpected hideaway. We linked the unusual sizes and shapes of the walls with a beautiful hand-cut stencil of birds, ivy and flowers applied in a delicate wash of blue. A wall draped in linen, with buttons as molding and fringe dangling from the bottom, was also adorned with the stencil. A lady’s writing table was decoupaged with personal letters and memoirs. It was a space of serenity and solitude. I loved it then. I love it still. ■ With memories of my space flashing in my mind, I arrived at the Tudor-style house in Hartford with excitement. As I walked into each room, I was taken by the skill of the designer. Each room was filled with ideas and an optimistic freshness. What had been ordinary became extraordinary. I hope you enjoy seeing these beautiful rooms in this issue. Bravo to the designers for a job well done!

issue features comprehensive reportage on the Junior League of Hartford Designer Showhouse presented by CTC&G. ■ From the outset, our company has produced, founded and sponsored showhouses and all manner of home and garden tours to bring our pages to life. And now, across the Sound, we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of our sister publication HC&G (Hamptons Cottages & Gardens) with a brand-new house tour. As reported in The New York Times, HC&G has joined forces with Hamptons 20 Century Modern (H20CM)—a nonprofit that works to preserve important contemporary architecture—to host the firstever 20th Century Modern House Tour in the Hamptons on Sunday, August 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exclusive tour includes a carefully curated collection of five important modernist homes dating from the early 1960s to the early 1980s—all designed by the most important architects of that era and all featuring black exteriors! ■ As Connecticut is no stranger to stunning modernist architecture of its own—starting with the legacy of the Harvard Five in New Canaan and its environs—why not make the trip to Long Island’s beautiful South Fork and explore these groundbreaking homes in the Hamptons? The tour is sure to please architecture enthusiasts near and far. ■ For tickets and more information, go to cottagesgardens. com/20CModernhousetour. I hope to see you there.

A true revolution does not spin in a circle. It spins in a square. Since 1929, the dishwasher as we know it has featured a circular sprayer trying to clean the inside of a square box. Which means that the corners, and everything near them, never get a thorough, powerful cleaning. Until today. Introducing CornerIntense®, the first spray arm to thoroughly reach every part of the dishwasher, including the corners. And that’s just one of the new innovative technologies you’ll find in our 2022 dishwasher lineup. Please visit us at beko.com/us-en/new-dishwashers for more information. The revolution in dishwashing has begun.

Show Time fter a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, the Junior League of Hartford welcomed guests this June to its 15th designer showhouse. The showhouse is the organization’s preeminent fundraiser. Presented with exclusive media partner CTC&G, interior designers, artists and landscape architects—led by legendary designer and showhouse Honorary Design Chair Anthony Baratta—reimagined the interior spaces and grounds of a notable Tudor-style house. The historic home—chosen for its architecture, including handsome brick, decorative half-timber exterior, multi-pane and oriel windows and asymmetrical front facing gables—overlooks buccolic Trout Brook in West Hartford. Completed in 1938, the residence was built for Frederick Sidney Holt, a former editor for the Associated Press and Aetna Fire Insurance Company executive, and his wife, Sarah-Louise, who hosted many charity events at the home. Exhibiting the character and charm of an English country manor, the home has been updated, inside and out, by a select group of 16 designers. Describing the transformation process, Baratta noted: “This home is the ideal blueprint for designers to translate their style and aesthetic into the way people live today. The pandemic has shifted design away from the great room that leads with a similar design style throughout each space, and more toward the traditional, historic home footprint with smaller rooms that can are not only multifunctional, but also offer respite from other areas of the home. I love the home—designers really have an opportunity to show their personalities.” A philanthropic leader in the community, the Junior League of Hartford is celebrating 100 years of service. The JLH is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of

trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Since 1921, The Junior League of Hartford has been committed to making a difference in the greater Hartford community by assessing and identifying community needs, and then developing either direct programs or collaborations with other organizations and agencies to help meet those needs. The current community project of JLH is a partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford for the SMART Girls initiative. The SMART Girls program was developed to offer age-specific experiences that enhance girls’ physical and emotional health. artford is the heartbeat of Connecticut, with a pulse that’s quick to supply its residents and visitors with numerous eclectic opportunities. From diverse dining with ethnic eats, to destination hotels and cultural attractions, this is truly a must-stop, -stay, -dine and -play city. The capital city lures history buffs as it is rich in culture and history. Many of Hartford’s historical sites and landmarks are some of our country’s “firsts”—such as the first public arts museum, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art; the first publicly funded park at Bushnell Park; and the oldest public rose garden at Elizabeth Park. These historically significant and inspiring sites create a true urban oasis. The area also has ties to cherished American literary talents like Mark Twain and Noah Webster, plus social reformers like Harriet Beecher Stowe. Known as “the insurance capital of the world,” Hartford boasts more than 100 insurance companies, but the city itself and its surrounding suburbs, like the town of West Hartford, have so much more to offer than insurance. A bustling music and arts scene, numerous cultural festivals, beautiful parks, diverse

SPOTLIGHT

The Tudor Revival House rchitecture, according to Karsten Harries, Yale professor of Philosophy & Architecture, “reaches for the sky and yet remains anchored in the ground. It reaches into the future while tethered to the past.” Architecture is what makes the world our home. Yet architecture should also question, challenge and respond to changing ways of life. This question between what is, has been, and what might be is the essential tension in architecture and life itself. Tudor Revival houses from the 1910s–1940s, reaching their height of popularity in the 1920s, evolved from the Gothic Revival movement. This return to nature—toward the idea of growth and form evolving and decaying over time—gave rise and voice to a much broader range of raw, organic materials. It led to a more creative, individual touch and expression in building as a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and its dehumanizing forces. It also led to the summoning idea that art and architecture are the direct expression of the social conditions and health of the society in which they were a part. In Tudor Revivals, we can sense the boundaries between inside and outside are no longer clear and distinct. Rather, they are increasingly more connected and fused as the 19th-century Tudor Revival house evolves and changes, and the Midcentury Modern house design emerges. The key insight is increasingly that “the window replaces the wall” and flexible space increasingly replaces the static. Endless variations of materials and details give these homes a special character. The sense of age, of incompleteness, its emphasis on material, roughness, texture, asymmetry, irregularity, imperfection, and the touch of the human hand are all at play. It elicits an emotional experience of time and change—something akin to a memory of

POPPY POWER Interior designer Mark D. Sikes is known for his fresh, all-American style. He has applied that same spirited sensiblity to his newlyintroduced Poppy Collection with Anthropologie. Named after his beloved French bulldog, the curated assortment of furniture, lighting, wallpaper, tabletop and decorative accessories features colorful, maximalist prints. “When ideating my dream collection, I knew that I wanted to create luxurious pieces that could complement each other perfectly, but also have just as much of an impact on their own,” says Sikes. Westport, anthropologie.com.

THE COLOR OF WATER

INDUSTRIAL CHIC

Marking his first foray into plumbing products, architect, interior and product designer Barry Goralnick teamed up with Brooklyn-based Watermark Designs. The James Collection is complete with knobs and lever faucets, shower systems and accessories handcrafted from solid brass. Goralnick describes the industrial yet sophisticated style, which includes gear-like knobs, as “blended modern.” Rich twotoned finishes add to the collection’s visual and tactile beauty. “The industrial aesthetic has been popular ever since the modern architecture of the Bauhaus movement brought it from the factory to the home,” notes Goralnick. Available through Bender, benderplg.com, watermark-designs.com.

Launching a third fabric collection with Kravet, interior designer Jeffrey Alan Marks takes a deeper dive into the art of color and texture. The Seascapes collection includes new colorations of existing patterns, while also presenting original designs in soothing, sophisticated fabrics. “I wanted this collection to be very painterly, like the pottery that I love in my own home, with both faded and pungent colors,” states Marks. Coastalvibe patterns like Low Tide, Great Reef, Lost Coast and Lookout Point are coordinated with checks, plaids and wovens in ocean hues of soft blues, aquas, seafoam, indigo and sandy neutrals. “It’s very obviously sea inspired but also very sophisticated,” adds Marks. “I can see this in a city or a beach house in Malibu.” kravet.com.

DRINKS WITH MARTHA Two names synonymous with elegance and hospitality, Baccarat and Martha Stewart, are toasting to a collaboration. Inspired by Stewart’s considerable Baccarat collection, the Martha pattern includes goblets, tumblers, a pitcher and an ice bucket with jewel-like, crosshatched etching. “I am a longtime admirer of Baccarat’s exquisite crystalware, so it is such an honor to partner with this distinguished brand on the Martha collection,” says Stewart. “I look forward to not only sharing these elegant designs with consumers, but also to enjoying the beautiful crystal myself. I am particularly proud of the Martha-rita goblets.” Prices range from $350 to $1,100, available at Baccarat boutiques, baccarat.com and Neiman Marcus, neimanmarcus.com, martha.com. —Mary Fitzgerald

Why did you decide to chair this particular showhouse? For all the good that the Junior League of Hartford does for its community—assisting women, children and families on such a direct level—it was an easy “yes” for us. Also, with our team partially Connecticut based, we were excited to do a showhouse alongside the local talented designers. This is a first for your company to design a room in a showhouse. How can that be possible? We’ve never been able to take the time to do a showhouse— to take time away from our daily workload. Since this showhouse was presented with such a quick turnaround time, we felt we could spare the time for such a great event.

Quite a few antiques were used in this home. Are they on an upswing in popularity? Yes. For those looking for a more personal interior, antiques are being requested more often these days.

What was your first impression of this home? The house was charming. It reminded me very much of my hometown of Nutley, New Jersey, which was developed at a similar time that West Hartford was developed.

What was it like working with this group? I was very impressed with the work of all the talented designers that participated. They certainly didn’t need my help in putting their rooms together! I learned a lot of nice things from their decorating.

How did the small scale of the rooms play into design of the spaces? It allowed the designers to make such intimate, focused spaces, scaled to normal life that we are used to in our own homes. There’s tons of information from this particular showhouse to teach us all how to live nicely.

Can you envision yourself living here? Of course—the spaces are all inviting, it’s in a beautiful town, in a beautiful house, by a babbling brook. Why not?

There’s a lot of color, pattern and layering here. What’s the trick to making that work? There are so many different versions of color schemes and layering examples at the showhouse, it was great to see. For us, we like to stick to classic colorations—here primary colors—and then mix in a range of patterns, from large scale to small. The color is very controlled to make it all play nicely together.

What was the biggest takeaway from this experience? The warmth and generosity of all the designers, the great support from the women of the Junior League, and the wonderful opportunity made possible by CTC&G. It was a great sense of community, especially after such a long time of not working in such big groups. What’s your next showhouse? Kip’s Bay, Dallas, is next on the docket. The room is going to be much more catered to life in that part of the country, since we are always conscious of our audience. We are looking forward to a totally new challenge.

PORTRAIT: PAUL BICKFORD; ALL OTHERS: ANASTASSIOS MENTIS

What is the importance of showhouses—for designers and for the public? The importance of a showhouse for designers is the chance to create a fantasy without the constraints of a normal project. They get a chance to experiment and flex their creative muscles. For the viewer, it’s an interesting experience because they get totally inspired by the newest, freshest design ideas—not limited to the reality of a typical project.

f the real estate market were an

ocean, its tide could be described as rushing out—after more than two years without an ebb. But the coming correction won’t necessarily offer relief for buyers, at least not very quickly. That’s because there’s still a record low number of for-sale homes on the market and supply chain issues have stalled out new-construction projects. Mortgage rates continue to climb, currently as high as 6 percent, a highwater mark of its own. And while the sunny (for sellers) days of bidding wars and no-contingency offers may be ebbing, home prices won’t fall until inventory can build back. All that said, our market boasts—at press time, anyway—a handful of spectacular listings, all of them modern in spirit and some of them attached to our state’s most celebrated midcentury architects, including Landis Gores and Paul Rudolph. See you in September! THE FABULOUS FIFTIES

Every single one of the so-called harvard Five architects is interesting in his own way. But Landis Gores has an especially fascinating life story. As Philip Johnson’s partner, the two left Manhattan because Johnson wasn’t licensed to practice architecture in New York (fun fact!), settling in New Canaan instead and, in the process,

turning that tiny town into a hotbed of modern architecture. After the pair parted ways in 1951, Gores formed his own firm, contracted polio and had to use a wheelchair, but still managed to design important buildings, including the pavilion attached to the circa-1954 Swallen House, now on the market for $2,295,000. More fodder for design nerds: On the National Register of Historic Homes, the main house is based on a Tech-Built structure, an early, semi-built kit house, designed by architect Carl Koch, a prefab pioneer. Its current owners undertook an extensive renovation, resulting in dazzling, 3,388-square-foot interiors. The attached Gores-designed “pavilion” part of the complex is dubbed the Mad Men Room for its stylish, sexy expanses of glass and open-floor plan—making for perfect, and private, lounging spaces. Additionally, the beautifully landscaped property offers four bedrooms and four bathrooms, including a posh primary suite with soaring ceilings and walls of glass. It lists with Aileen Mastey of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty. Greenwich has another circa-1950s modern on the market, just listed for $2,995,000. It was built by noted modern architect Paul Rudolph in 1957 to take advantage of its 100-foot-high perch above the Byram River, with

Raw Talent The chic use of unornamented cinder block, wood and other materials distinguishes this Redding modern, listed for $1.2 million with Jack Trifero and Becky Walsh of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in New Canaan. 203216-8774 and 203-858-5909.

CAPITAL INVESTMENTS Two grand Hartford homes take us back to the glory days of our state’s capital city—where enterprising buyers are snapping (and fixing) up properties. The first is as neoclassical mansion (far left) on Governor’s Row, built in 1920 for Alfred Fuller of the Fuller Brush fame. While it’s one of the most expensive listings on the city’s market, a million bucks (or $1,075,000 to be precise) buys you a lot in Hartford. There’s a banquetsized dining hall, a formal library with a fireplace and seven bedrooms (plus six bathrooms). It lists with John Balf Morgan of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in West Hartford. 860-989-8096. Also on Prospect Avenue, directly on the park, is a circa-1900 red brick manse (near left)—with impressive white columns and more than 20,000-square-foot interiors—that will require renovation, as the house was converted into a church. It's offered by Claude Cousins of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices in West Hartford for $650,000. 860-989-2113.

plenty of glass through which to enjoy the setting, including the western skies. The sunken living room is especially handsome, with its floor-toceiling hearth, glass walls and attached screened-in porch. And the fouracre-plus grounds feature terraces, garden paths lined with ornamental trees and a swimming pool. It lists with Fran Ehrlich and Helene Barre of Sotheby’s International Realty. We’ll wrap up the decade in Redding, at a secluded circa-1956 dwelling with renovated interiors that have a spare, almost raw appeal that’s both elegant and industrial. The primary mass is almost entirely open plan, with unornamented wood columns, rough-hewn brick walls and exposed cinderblock partitions creating dining, living and lounging spaces. But there are also pristine expanses of glass running along the outer walls, letting in loads of light and views onto the nearly 10-acre wooded lot. And while it’s a smaller house—on a single story with just two bedrooms and fewer than 3,500 square feet—it has an airy, lofty feel. It lists for $1.2 million with Jack Trifero and Becky Walsh of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty.

Geometry Class The dramatic rooflines make this Hamden dwelling unique. It’s offered for $629,000 with Wojtek Borowski with H. Pearce Real Estate in New Haven. 203-606-9898.

Modern architecture shape-shifted during its second decade, expanding housing templates to include ever-more daring features, like space-age—some called them “Jetson-like”—rooflines and a Cubist approach to windows and balconies. A cool, circa1969 house in Hamden exemplifies this approach with its radical geometry, including steeply sloping roofs and quirky skylights. Built by Yale-trained architect David Sellers, the cedar-shingled dwelling features a sunken living room with oversized windows and the original fireplace, and a playfully designed kitchen with teak counters. In all, it offers four bedrooms and two bathrooms, including a primary suite with a balcony. It lists for $629,000 with Wojtek Borowski of H. Pearce Real Estate. In Washington, a circa-1964 modern was recently renovated by interior designer Sara Brandon, who perfected the pretty, open-plan interiors. The long, raised structure is built with walls of glass on both sides, with lovely

landscaping in front and an oversized pool terrace in back, equipped with a fire pit and an outdoor shower. Inside the 3,370-square-foot dwelling, the dazzling spaces include a loft-like dining room with a fireplace and exposed redwood beams and four bedrooms, as well as five bathrooms. It lists for $2,450,000 with Ira Goldspiel and Steve Pener, both of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty. —Diane di Costanzo

HARTFORD DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE

Presented by exclusive media sponsor CTC&G, the 15th Junior League of Hartford Designer Showhouse made a triumphant return this past June. Usually held every three years, the capitalregion event was postponed in 2021 due to Covid restrictions. As the primary fundraiser for JLH community initiatives, over the years, it has raised more than $1.6 million to support projects and programs in the Greater Hartford area. To transform the home, a select group of interior and landscape designers, led by interior designer Anthony Baratta as honorary design chair, worked with generous sponsors to restore, renovate and reimagine a historic West Hartford Tudor. FIONA LEONARD INTERIORS FRONT DOOR AND ENTRYWAY

Fiona Leonard transformed a dark front door into a welcoming entrance with Backdrop’s paint called Saturday on Sunday—a dark blue-gray with a hint of green—while a table and chairs offer a spot for a game of chess or just to bask in the lush surroundings. This home has not one but two entry spaces. Leonard wanted this petite vestibule to pack a punch. Step inside, and Backdrop’s Jawbreaker paint—a rosy mauve—does just that. She skillfully juxtaposed it with Flat Vernacular’s Swallowtail wallpaper and an oil painting by Kelly Rossetti. Furnishings include a live-edge console from Black Creek Designs and a Samos mirror from Joss & Main. The colorful planters on the console are through Terrain. The space is grounded with Tuscan brick floor tile from Tile America.

ETHAN ALLEN INTERIORS LIVING ROOM

A long, narrow living room provided a design challenge for the Ethan Allen design team. The vision for the space was to create a transitional room with a handsome elegance. The designers used rich finishes paired with supple leather, luxurious velvet and fur. The accents enhance the space with a variety of textures layered together to complete the design. The heron artwork at the far end of the room draws you in and plays off the colors in the space, as well as the beautiful views through the adjacent window. Wall paint color is Benjamin Moore’s Boothbay Gray through Ring’s End.

CAMDEN GRACE INTERIORS DINING ROOM

Camden Grace Interiors designers Jeanne Barber, Julia Zajac and Corey Hunton worked together to create this dining room, where antiques mix with modern art and contemporary forms. Walls clad in a Phillip Jeffries wallcovering complement the room’s architectural elements. A console from Chairish has a skirt crafted from a Pierre Frey fabric. Vintage chairs sport an Anna Spiro Textiles fabric through Studio Four NYC and surround an antique table. The rug is from Stark; the ceiling fixture is Visual Comfort through Light New England. Ceiling and trim paint is Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster; accent paint is Benjamin Moore’s Dark Burgundy through Ring’s End. A vintage bamboo secretary serves double duty as a bar and as a desk.

NEAT METHOD HARTFORD BUTLER’S PANTRY

Organization was key for this successful butler’s pantry designed by Melissa Porter for Neat Method with Julia Zajac and Jessica Dobis for Junior League of Hartford. Neat Method spice jars, canisters and bins display contents with form and function in mind. The drawers are outfitted with Neat Method acacia drawer dividers. Walls are clad in a jade, hydrangea paper from York Wallcoverings.

LAUNDRY ROOM

Melissa Porter for Neat Method, along with Julia Zajac and Jessica Dobis for Junior League of Hartford, carved out an inviting laundry room in a small space next to the main gathering area of the house. Open shelving is organized with a clutter-free look. The closed cabinet accommodates laundry and cleaning supplies in Neat Method bins. The wallpaper from York Wallcoverings adds a sunny note, while a jute scatter rug from Etsy adds texture underfoot. july/august 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

KATE SMITH INTERIORS BREAKFAST NOOK

Taking inspiration from the roses in West Hartford’s Elizabeth Park, Kate Smith used a Schumacher wallpaper as a backdrop for the breakfast nook. “I wanted the room to bring the feeling of the rose garden to life—colorful and feminine with a mix of natural elements and bright glossy accents,” Smith notes. Rattan chairs from Safavieh surround a table from Dunes and Duchess. The Visual Comfort chandelier is through Circa Lighting. The rug is from Annie Selke; drapery velvet is through the Shade Store. A collection of vases found at Elephant’s Trunk flea market top a vintage Henry Link console through Revival Home. The beetle art is by Mary Maguire. 60

MEWS DESIGNS POWDER ROOM

Shelley Curtis Dodd aimed to honor and modernize the English roots of the home when designing the powder room. A dark oak wood vanity was sourced through Waterware Showrooms of Plimpton & Hills and has drawer pulls from Rejuvenation with a bridle-leather finish, a material echoed in a leather-bound mirror from Arhaus. The Kohler faucet, featuring a handsome pinstripe in a rich polished nickel finish, and the HanStone quartz countertop in a subtle ivory marble pattern, add a vintage feel to the space. Schumacher wallcoverings on the walls and ceiling incorporate elements of lattice work. Italian porcelain tile—Bambusa in Wenge—is through Tile America.

EDITH WHITMAN INTERIORS

KITCHEN, BEVERAGE BAR

A veteran designer of all 15 JLH showhouses, Edith Whitman accessorized the kitchen with a mix of antique and new items. The area at the end of the kitchen has an antique desk under the bay window—perfect for homework or puzzles. Under the other window, an antique bench has storage under the seat. The room’s palette was inspired by a colorful floral rug, which is complemented by the window treatment fabric and a Brunschwig & Fils fabric on the bench cushions. 62

MCCORY INTERIORS FOYER AND LANDING

The elegant swirls of Robert Passal’s dramatic Renzo wallcovering in lilac and a bench from the Local Vault marries thoughtful, modern touches with the home’s classic detailing throughout the two-story foyer. Designer Kristen McCory painted the balustrade and stair rail in a two-tone color scheme, which keeps things graphic. Framed contemporary art by Raoul Morren is hung above a contemporary console. Upstairs, a window seat sports a Lee Jofa linen, while window treatments in an Avant Garde fabric punctuate the space with green. Lighting is by Visual Comfort; the stair runner is Stanton Carpet Ticking Stripe 2 in Tuxedo.

MOLLY PATTON DESIGN BEDROOM

To create a whimsical hideaway of a guest bedroom, designer Dana Ferraro covered the ceiling, gables and walls in a historic Spinney Toile by Brewster Home Fashions. The scale and the smart shift in the direction of the paper’s pattern keeps things orderly, not overwhelming. Antique walnut twin beds from Chairish ground the room, while tailored bedding, unexpected textiles, and rugs in mixed textures add layers to the space. The trim paint is Benjamin Moore’s Fort Pierce Green through Ring’s End. The seagrass rug is through Rush House. The lamps are Visual Comfort with Anthropologie lampshades. The gingham fabric is Bermuda Check in Parma by Schumacher. The floral fabric is Tulips by Ottoline. Custom benches are finished in a pink Romo fabric.

ROBIN JONES DESIGNS BEDROOM

A custom bed with brass nailhead detail and a wool and cotton Nepalese carpet from J. Namnoun Rug Gallery anchor this richly layered contemporary bedroom. Bedside chests in cerused oak with antique mirror fronts are topped by handmade nickel lamps. A midcentury convex mirror made of gilded nails complements the bed wall covered in a Nina Campbell paper through Osborne & Little. A cerused oak and lacquered linen sideboard frame the opposite wall. The hatrack is a Provincetown find. The wall paint is Benjamin Moore’s Frosted Toffee through Ring’s End.

SKM DESIGN PLAYROOM

About transforming a dark cedar closet into a playroom, designer Stacy Millman says: “I wanted the room to contrast with the existing house—an unexpected special secret hideaway for kids to write, read, feel creative. In this 1930s traditional Tudor home, you open a door to a bright, minimal, ‘mod’ space that awakens your senses.” White walls contrast with kid-friendly Flor carpet tiles in a colorful custom pattern—a modern take on a plaid. Built-in shelving by HB Woodworking ties the recessed window wall and adjacent wall together. A PB Teen lounge chair provides a cozy reading spot. The Hello, There artwork is by Robyn Miller Design. 69

KATHRYN HUNT STUDIO BEDROOM, DRESSING AREA

This elegant bedroom, in a palette of blues and greens, is wrapped in a bespoke trellis-like wallcovering from Kathryn Hunt Studio. The garden-inspired design continues with framed Diane Hill botanical prints. The room is grounded with a rug through Rush House, and the ceiling sports a custom Venetian plaster finish imbued with a unique sparkle by Sean Platt Plaster. The bed canopy and window treatments are custom through the Shade Store using Kelly Ventura and Holland & Sherry fabrics. Textural lighting choices include a chinoiserie rattan fixture from Newport Lamp & Shade Company, rope lights from Palecek and a woven-grass fixture in the dressing room found at Brimfield. Molding paints are Benjamin Moore’s High Park and West Coast through Ring’s End. 70

VANESSA BRENNAN INTERIORS BEDROOM

“The challenge was to make this feel like a little jewel box where a guest would feel right at home,” says Vanessa Brennan about this charming bedroom. Brennan wrapped the walls in Schumacher’s Indian Arbre and provided texture underfoot with an Annie Selke rug. A bed from Newel is flanked by sconces from Shades of Light. On one side of the bed, a Gustavian-style console through the Antique & Artisan Gallery is paired with a stool from Fairfield County Antique & Design Center, while a small table from Montage Antiques occupies a bedside corner. An inviting seating arrangement was created with a rattan chair from Chairish and an Oomph side table.

ANTHONY BARATTA LLC BEDROOM

Connecticut residents Jaime Magoon and Erick Espinoza, lead designers for Anthony Baratta LLC, found inspiration for their room in one of America’s most influential decorators, Sister Parish. “We strived to make the space a celebration of American heritage,” notes Magoon. “But also keeping it upbeat 74

Sister Parish was used as the backdrop for the beds. Other country-house staples include a custom vintage painted chest, Garnet Hill quilts, Sister Parish Boxwood Stripe wallpaper and a vintage wicker desk with a decorative finish by Osmundo Studio. july/august 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

SCREENED-IN PORCH, STONE PATIO

Biophilic design—blurring the lines between outdoor and indoor living—was behind the nature-inspired spaces by Jennifer Moreau. In the screened-in porch, Phillips Collection stools are cast from tree trunks. The porch bed from the Porch Swing Company is topped with pillows in Clarke & Clarke’s Marissa in teal/spice. The handcrafted ceiling fixture is by Hubbardton Forge, and the wall lanterns are through Mercana. The patio garden design is by master gardener Nancy Butler of Lyric Hill Farm. The faux-bois planters and succulent wall art are from the Phillips Collection. The window grate wall hanging is a Mongers Market find. 77

CREATIVE CONTOUR LANDSCAPE DESIGN

WINE & SPIRITS

Exotic Summer Sips est Hartford is a hotbed for craft cocktails made with exotic ingredients—think Mediterranean spices, tiki bitters and hand-cut rose petal ice. At these three bustling bars, you can sip over-the-top elixirs al fresco on a warm summer night.

Cora Cora’s La Patrona

Artisan Restaurant, Tavern and Garden at the Delamar Hotel 1 Memorial Rd. artisanwesthartford.com Artisan is a transportive place for a fine libation, with its 1,500-square-foot garden filled with fragrant flowers, pear trees and herb bushes. Beverage and bar manager Rebecca J:son-Toft creates seasonal cocktails from local ingredients, mixing herbs from the garden with the Hartford Flavor Company’s Wild Moon Liqueurs & Botanicals (all based on sweetened tinctures from Victorian and medieval times). Try the Smoke on the Water (Tanteo Chipotle tequila with Wild Moon’s ginger and rose liqueurs) served in a Collins glass on ice. “It combines smoky, sweet, rose and ginger,” says J:son-Toft. Also popular is the Sun Also Rises. “It’s a riff on a classic Daiquiri,” she says. It is made with Papa’s Pilar rum from Florida’s Hemingway Rum Company, pear liqueur, lemon, egg white and house-made tiki bitters. “The recipe for the tiki bitters is a secret. It tastes like Coca Cola.” The Rabarber (gin, rhubarb liqueur, honey, pear nectar, lime juice, ginger bitters) is named for a beloved Swedish ingredient, rhubarb (restaurateur Rick Wahlstedt is of Swedish origin) featured here in a fruit liqueur from Fruitful Mixology, an East Hartford producer. Sip your drinks in the garden with Rhode Island oysters and Middle Neck clams.

Zohara

991 Farmington Ave. zoharact.com Take a virtual trip to the Middle East on the patio at Zohara, sipping spiced cocktails kissed with cardamom, za’atar and star anise surrounded by potted citrus and palm trees. “I would start with the 24 Carrot with our house-infused cardamom vodka, carrot juice, local honey and lemon juice,” suggests general manager Gabriela Angelini. “I shake all the ingredients until it develops a nice froth and garnish it with a floating dehydrated lemon wheel.”

80

ctc&g cottagesgardens.com july/august 2022

The Root Down (fresh beet juice, bourbon, dried curacao, lemon juice)—served in a stemless tulip glass with a fresh rosemary garnish—is another signature cocktail, featuring star anise– infused simple syrup, which adds a distinctly Middle Eastern licorice note. New to the cocktail menu is the Patio Punch, highlighting a house-made pistachio orgeat—pistachios being the most widely used nut in Middle Eastern cuisine. “It’s our version of the Rum Runner,” says Angelini. The drink is three ingredients—rum, pistachio orgeat (syrup) and lime juice—garnished with sugar cane and mint in a tiki glass on ice. Zohara, which is celebrating its fifth birthday, offers an abundance of bright shareable appetizers, including fattoush salad with snap peas, asparagus and Little Gem lettuce, and charred octopus with a harissa vinaigrette.

Cora Cora

Zohara’s Root Down

162 Shield St. coracoract.com Cora Cora, a recent semifinalist for the James Beard Award, features exceptional Peruvian cooking paired with equally exciting mixed drinks. Try the signature La Patrona—the boss—(pisco, dragon fruit, passion fruit, lime juice) named in honor of chef Macarena Ludena, who is also a semifinalist for “Best Chef Northeast” award. Other pisco drinks include the classic Pisco Sour, Passion Pisco Sour (with passion fruit) and a Chicha Sour (made with purple corn soaked in pisco for three months). A more recent addition, the Inca Artisan’s Sun Also Rises Azteca, combines pisco with tequila and Grand Marnier. All the pisco cocktails are made with the artisanal smallbatch Caravedo Quebranta from Pisco Porton, which is crafted at Hacienda La Caraveda in the Peruvian Andes. It’s an award-winning “puro” style of pisco with floral aromas, grape flavors and an earthy finish. The cocktails often come with theatrics. “We have a smoking cocktail that emits passion-fruit smoke,” says Nasheli Ortiz, the beverage director who works with chef Ludena inventing the ornately garnished drinks. “We have many ice molds and make giant ball cubes, squares and even ice carved into rose petals.” The cocktails and empanadas are particularly plentiful during the nightly happy hour, from 5 to 6 p.m., when the patio is often packed. —Baroness Sheri de Borchgrave
