Drawn to Water
At this time of year, all of us shift our gaze to water—any body of water. While we view it as a place to relax and restore, water has many other benefits that we often forget when we are away from it. Sure, it is therapeutic and recreational, but for me it is so much more. Like staring at clouds or gazing into a fire, looking at water is hypnotic. ■ This past April at the Milan Design Week, there were many art installations, but the one that caught my interest was called “Shaped by Water” by American artist Lachlan Turczan. (You might know his beautiful fountains at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas.) In partnership with Google, Turczan filled mirrored basins with water to use as giant speakers. The basins vibrated at different frequencies to create wave patterns, enabling visitors to explore the hidden qualities of water. The installation showed how the size of the vessel and sound frequencies changed the size and patterns of the waves in the vessels. “Sound becomes a tool that allows you to sculpt this pool of water into a dynamic shifting landscape,” the artist said. These patterns are beautiful and mesmerizing. ■ Another artist, photographer Terence Pieters, captures his muse—waves—by being in the water itself. His images are thrilling! You can see the texture and form of the wave. You feel as if you can touch the wave that we often view from a distance. His photographs capture the many moods and shapes of the waves on the coast of his home in South Africa. Yet I couldn’t resist putting one on the cover of a magazine about Connecticut. Water transcends time and space. It unites us all. Says Pieters, “I found peace, meaning, excitement and pure joy…” ■ As a swimmer, I prefer the serenity of a pool. In the ocean, I am usually ducking out of the waves. I have respect for their power but, honestly, I fear them. But seeing waves from a different point of view is truly magical. Maybe I will enjoy my ocean swims more this summer.
DJ Carey Editorial Director djcarey@candg.com

LETTER FROM THE CEO
The “Water Issue”
This “Water Issue “has been part of CTC&G since its debut in 2004 and signals the beginning of summer for us. While most publishing houses are taking it easy, we are in full blast-off mode. ■ June opens with CTC&G as the proud media sponsor of the Greenwich Historical Society’s Spring Tour, a celebration of outdoor entertaining, landscape and garden design showcasing some of Greenwich’s most spectacular properties. With the participation of Honorary Chair Aerin Lauder, a Patron Party at a historic mid-country home will kick off the event on Wednesday, May 24, and the Spring Tour will take place on Thursday, June 1. ■ Up in Southport, the Pequot Library and media sponsor CTC&G present the annual Southport Garden Stroll, featuring several of Southport’s finest, picturesque gardens. The event kicks off on Thursday, June 1, with a night of Champagne and canapes at a private Southport harborside home. ■ The Near & Far Aid House Tour is back on June 2 with media sponsor CTC&G. The tour will feature homes in Southport, Westport and Fairfield, where visitors can delight in top-notch design inspiration and conclude with sunset cocktails. We are grateful to Connecticut’s generous hosts who invite us into their spectacular homes to kick off all the fun! ■ At the same time, our team in the Hamptons— where sister publication HC&G publishes fortnightly in high season—keeps up the pace! The Parrish Art Museum’s “Landscape Pleasures” (dubbed the horticultural highlight for gardens and garden lovers) is followed by “Much Ado about Madoo” (the conservancy’s annual summer benefit garden market and cocktail party); the 2023 Shelter Island House Tour hosted by the Shelter Island Historical Society featuring five stunning homes ranging in style from historic to contemporary; and the Guild Hall’s “Garden as Art” featuring a morning talk and a self-guided tour of four incredible private East Hampton village gardens. ■ I hope to see you there.

WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS WHEN DESIGNING A HOME ON OR NEAR THE WATER?
KERRY DELROSE
“When designing projects on the water, we always consider the view as the focal point. Clients search hard for the perfect spot, so we need to take advantage of that. I always say, it’s the Mona Lisa of the project! No art, furniture or lighting should compete with it. Use the views as your best design asset in every room where you can!” Interior designer, “Shimmery Stunner” page 52, delrosedesigngroup.com.
ROBERT DEAN
“Understanding the site and making the most of it is always important in designing a home, but when someone comes to us with a waterfront project, it’s pretty clear that access to the water and the view are the key. If the project is a renovation, this means designing the windows, decks, terraces and furnishings to make the view an organic part of the experience of the house. If it’s a new house, this goes a step further to the positioning of the house on the site. Sometimes we set up platforms on the empty site to help the client see how the relationships with views and water and sun will come to life.” Architect, “Elevated Style” page 60, robertdeanarchitects.com.
RYAN SALVATORE, MARY BURR
“In addition to navigating the zoning regulations, there is an obvious desire to capture water views. The plan of waterfront houses is often single loaded corridors, so that all the principal rooms off of this corridor have access to the view. This can be tricky because the house, and therefore the corridor, can become quite long. We try to ameliorate the long hallway effect by jogging it with a knot or interrupting it with a sitting room.” Architects, “Coastal Cachet” page 74, burrsalvatore.com.

WE'VE MOVED
Lattice House has moved to a new location in downtown Southport, expanding its square footage and broadening its scope to include upholstery, new and vintage furniture and lighting. An exciting partnership with Connecticut maker Dunes and Duchess offers a selection of handcrafted furniture and lighting. “We are thrilled to be in the center of Southport Village in one of the village's most iconic storefronts,” says owner and creative director Christopher Philip. The shop—known for its delightful mix of new and curated finds from local and global sources and its core categories of men’s gifts, barware, garden and home décor—is also the home of the Parker & Company design studio. “Lattice House and Parker & Company regularly collaborate on projects, so bringing the two business under one roof made perfect sense,” adds Philip. 330 Pequot Ave., Southport, 917-520-0120.
COLOR CURIOSITY
Founded by Dallas-based artist Jill Elliott, Color Kind Studio begins every pattern with a brush, paint and paper. The studio explores and celebrates how color elicits emotion and happiness. “I believe our surroundings impact our energy, and design has the power to bring joy into your space and life,” states Elliott. Each pattern is painted by hand, then scanned and perfected on the computer before being digitally printed to order. The Wanderhome collection, released this spring, includes Landscape and Swipes, offered in wallpaper and fabric, and Color Quilt in wallpaper. As expected, the designs capture Elliott’s painterly style in bright hues with energetic movement. colorkindstudio.com.
California Dreaming
CB2 and Los Angeles–based interior designer Ross Cassidy unveiled an outdoor furniture and accessory collection just in time for summer. The 65-piece collection features luxe touches typically reserved for indoor furnishings, including organic materials, patinated finishes, curved silhouettes and European sophistication. “This collection is meant to transport you to the beach clubs of Saint-Tropez,” says Cassidy. “It’s rich, warm and casual, all with a luxurious approach.” The grouping includes an outdoor version of his popular Bacio upholstery, updated in all-weather rattan and plush Sunbrella performance cushions. Rounding out the collection—rugs, pillows and beach towels translated from hand-painted designs by Cassidy. Prices start at $50, cb2.com.
MILE STONES
Two Virginia companies, New Ravenna and McKinnon and Harris, are marking milestone anniversaries.
To celebrate, they are joining forces on a new furniture collaboration. Three tables are being presented—Raj, Rattan and Marabel—each with distinct mosaic patterns in handcrafted polished, tumbled and honed stones.
“Both New Ravenna and McKinnon and Harris inhabit the world of functional art,” says Richard Walters, CEO of New Ravenna. “We each have over three decades of honoring the beauty of hand-crafted production.”
Will Massie, cofounder and CEO of McKinnon and Harris adds, “New Ravenna gives people the opportunity to work with their hands, minds and hearts in the same way we do at McKinnon and Harris. I love working with a company that is keeping hand-craftsmanship and traditional skills alive and creating a community that is centered around art.” Available through McKinnon and Harris showrooms, D&D, mckinnonharris.com, newravenna.com.

Fenwick’s Shingle Style
Many places transport us to another age.
Looking across the Roman forum or gazing at the rose window in Chartres Cathedral brings back long-gone times. Personally, Fenwick, Connecticut—no ancient European location—takes me back 140 years to late 19th-century New England.
In my foray into the Shingle Style, I have studied grainy black-and-white photographs from the 1880s where cottages pepper gently undulating dunescapes and former farmland— silhouettes against the sky. Today these cottages are swallowed up in a canopy of trees, obscured from view down shady driveways or behind towering hedgerows. But a century ago, they stood out on open land, newly accessed by the expanding rail lines branching out from dense urban centers.
Fenwick’s open landscape—the flat greensward and gravel lanes—brings back that time. The green and blue of grass and water replace vintage photos. Warm gray shingled houses with their dark green windows and trim punctuate the view. They are not the elaborate mansions of Newport. They are simpler in detail and form in a way that harkens back to the start of the Shingle Style.
Shingle cottages that we think of as oldfashioned were modern in their time, chockablock with novel ideas and the reinterpretation of older ones. Born from a mixture of colonial houses and the Victorian Stick Style, the early practitioners of the Shingle Style like McKim, Mead & White and William Ralph Emerson created a new American architecture. Rooms opened one into
another through broad archways, “halls” combined entrance foyer and what some might call “great rooms” surrounded by window bays, window seats, cozy inglenooks and cascading staircases. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows allowed light to enter, providing access to deep-shaded porches. The buildings were an assemblage of simple geometric forms.
Exemplifying those ideas is one of my favorite buildings in Fenwick, St. Mary’s-by-the-Sea, built in 1886—smack in the middle of my favorite decade. This chapel features a simple gambrel roof, a tacked-on side porch, a tower with a bell-shaped
roof, and lookout windows, all wrapped in a tweed of cedar shingles. To me, it says everything about summer on the New England shore.
Often, when traveling the Connecticut coast, my steering wheel mimics the pull of a divining rod in the desert, directing me off the highway at Old Saybrook and Fenwick. Happily, there are times when my arms just can’t resist. —Thomas A. Kligerman, NCARB, founding partner, Kligerman Architecture and Design, serves on the boards of a number of charitable and educational institutions, including Lutyens Trust America, Billion Oyster Project and Design Leadership Foundation.

Saugatuck Island is one of Westport’s most charming enclaves. And the island’s most iconic home is called Bea’s Folly, after one of the owners, part of the family that has lived there for nearly 60 years. Story goes that the couple bought an unheated summer beach shack whose lack of amenities was more than compensated for by its pride of place—directly on the water—and Long Island Sound views. Over the years, Bea and her family invested in both the home and its exteriors, creating a Japanese garden, a sculptural pergola and a backyard fountain. A HOUSE ON THE COAST OF LONG ISLAND SOUND REFLECTS THE WATER AND BASKS IN THE LIGHT

ater is everywhere at this new house—from its indoor pool and outdoor spa to its perch on the edge of Long Island Sound. Architect Cindy Stoll and interior designer Kerry Delrose lend some insight on how the spectacular site dictated their design decisions.
CTC&G: Had each of you worked with the homeowners before?
Cindy Stoll (architect, founding partner of the New Rochelle–based firm Stoll & Stoll): I had done a small renovation for them on the same lot, a 1950s-era ranch house with a Japanese feel to it. Once that work was done, and after the clients had figured out what kind of new house they wanted, I came on board again.
Kerry Delrose (designer, founder of New York–based Delrose Design Group): The homeowners are
first-time clients of mine. They had called my office after seeing one of our projects published in NYC&G [sister publication to CTC&G]—an apartment on the 38th floor of a building on Leonard Street in Manhattan known as the “Jenga” tower.
Long Island Sound is an undeniable force to be reckoned with here. How did you respond to a site where water is the operative word?
CS: The original house had an existing indoor pool, which became the central courtyard element—we essentially designed the new house around it. The original pool was not visible from inside the old house, but now it’s visible from every room. We extended the water element further by adding an outdoor spa with an infinity edge, over which water

spills to form a fountain and beyond which is the expanse of Long Island Sound.
KD: For the interiors, it was important to take cues from the blues and the grays of the water, rather than aim for shock appeal with an orange sofa. There was simply no reason to fight that view, and in this case that includes artwork. Given the expanse of windows, the house doesn’t offer much wall space for art. The Mona Lisa is the water itself.
How did you design a house that is essentially a curtain wall of glass but also imbue it with real architectural presence?
CS: We often referenced the Japanese aura of the former house, which the clients had lived in and liked. Horizontal bandings visually hold the house together on the rear side, which faces the water, and bands of copper along the roof, articulated railings and stone columns are also crucial. The indoor pool is topped with a clerestory, which not only brings in light, but also serves as a strong architectural gesture, rising higher than the roofline of the rest of the house. And a threestory stone wall supports the stairway—it’s essentially a three-dimensional block rising up through the house.

Indoor-Outdoor Living
A Lazzoni armchair (left) and a Prospect cocktail table from Lawson-Fenning occupy a prime viewing spot in the living room. The house features multiple areas for enjoying the outdoors and views of the water, from a spa pool (below) to an outdoor living area (opposite page), complete with a Salento fire table from RH. See Resources.
What sort of design challenges did you face on a site where not only the seasons change, but the water and light can vary every day and even every hour?
KD: The clients and I talked a lot about how the light and the seasons define the experience of being in these rooms. We started with what I call “the point of origin”— namely, from the ground up. We chose Stark carpets and built from there, focusing on soothing, calming colors. CS: The clients use the water sources year-round, by the way—no matter the temperature or the season. They’re in the water every day, whether it’s the indoor pool or the outdoor spa a few steps away.
Is it possible in a structure like this to tire of water views? They are always there, after all. KD: You have to love the water, and they certainly do. But there are ways to temper that and make the interiors stand on their own. We included ambient lighting elements, such as a Noguchi sculpture in the primary bedroom and super-sexy glass globe lights in the dining room that are set at different heights. The furniture in the bedroom feels akin to a comfy suite at the Carlyle Hotel, with chairs set in front of the fireplace and the bed facing them, instead of the water directly. And privacy was a concern from the start, since the indoor pool is so prevalent and all the bedrooms are visible from floor-to-ceiling windows. The solution: motorized shades! ✹

ome might say that it was a folly to buy this century-old home, but for one Westport couple, it was a joy. The pair have lived in the town’s backcountry for nearly 25 years but had kept an eye on properties by the beach as well. When the wife saw this cottage on a downpouring day in early 2018, she knew it was special. “It was a little wobbly, but it was precious,” she says. Where other potential buyers saw rotted-out timbers, sagging floors and walls bent by high winds, she saw
Sgorgeous beams, coastal character and the chance to give an older home a new chapter as their weekend house.
It was the clients’ can-do attitude that made the project such a pleasure, and a large part of why architect Robert Dean—who built their main home and has worked with them on several other projects since—enjoys collaborating with them. “They have a very enthusiastic way of life,” says Dean. “And they love this stuff.”
A long history of flood damage had left the structure very fragile. To revive it, “it needed absolutely everything,”

PINE FLOORING THROUGHOUT CREATES A CONTINUOUS SPACE THAT FITS TODAY’S OPEN-PLAN LIFESTYLE
notes Dean. Another buyer might have torn it down and started again, but the couple were committed to keeping as much of the original character as possible—and to enjoying the process. The most difficult and important step was lifting the home out of flood risk by raising it up about seven-and-a-half feet—a challenging task given that it lacks vehicular access and equipment had to be carefully squeezed down a narrow footpath. The house was raised by hydraulic jack over the course of an afternoon, where it remained for nearly two months while a sturdier foundation was constructed below. After a
painstaking excavation, 11 supporting piers now anchor it deep into the ground. As each hole was dug, it needed to be continuously pumped out because it would fill with water at every high tide. Though it was muddy and tedious work, “I loved it,” says the husband, a hands-on homeowner who often jumped in to help, even taking a turn on the digger. Once the house was on solid footing, the team could turn their attention to the interior layout. The new elevation created even more stunning views of the water, and the first floor was opened up significantly to take advantage of it and provide a more

contemporary flow. Pine flooring throughout creates a continuous space that fits today’s open-plan lifestyle, with materials (including original floorboards) that maintain the character of the past. A folding NanaWall opens the back of the house completely to the balcony and breezes outside. In tight quarters, clever storage solutions are everywhere, including a hidden utility closet under the stairs, accessed through a hinged bookcase.
While her husband was more interested in the construction, the wife took the lead on interior finishes. She designed for fun and sun, with ample space for dining and lounging, including a comfy sectional facing the water view and a collection of colorful artworks. A funky Smeg refrigerator and open kitchen shelving feels at home at the beach, as does the ropey light fixture over the deep blue island. In the bedrooms, bed frames with built-in drawers add more storage space. Dean managed to give the primary bedroom its own ensuite bath, and a vaulted ceiling with weathered wood paneling adds spaciousness and drama.
Though the team encountered some challenges during the renovation, not all their discoveries were bad: In the attic, a series of letters and checks signed by Harry F. Sherwood were found, dated as far back as 1928. As a result, the Westport Museum for History & Culture will soon christen the home “The Sherwood Cottage.”
The complexity of this project was “10 out of 10” says Dean, but for all involved, so was the enjoyment. The homeowners, “have a lot of joie de vivre,” he says, “and it’s reflected in the result.” ✹

hen Emily and Jeff Hanlon wanted to add a pool house to their New Canaan property, they turned to Ralph Mackin of Mackin Architects, who had designed their colonial farmhouse and garage— which resembles an old stone carriage house—a few years earlier. “We used the garage as the inspiration for the pool house design, as if it was an old stone barn on the farm and repurposed,” says Mackin. “We also added a potting shed and greenhouse, with adjacent gardens and orchard, and a barn to complete the country farm feeling.”
To furnish their new pool house, the Hanlons called on longtime friend Jeanne Collins of JerMar Designs. “Our children are friends, and we knew each other well before embarking on the project. It is always helpful to have a deep sense of how a family lives and what inspires them, so it was a luxury to have that from the get-go,” notes Collins. Although the main house style is very traditional, this family wanted a colorful, creative vibe for their new entertaining space. “They wanted the pool house to feel more contemporary, relaxed and like a vacation getaway,” says Collins. “I completely embraced that vibe and had a lot of fun creating this joyful design.”
Beyond its expected use, the pool house functions as a place for entertaining and holiday gatherings, so it needed to have plenty of seating and dining space. “It also serves as a daily spa retreat, so the design needed to feel fresh and inspiring,” says Collins. “We outfitted it with a steam shower, TV, kitchen, guest bedroom, full bath, laundry and dining areas for a full staycation experience.”
A vaulted ceiling finished in a weathered gray–stained Hemlock selected by Mackin Architects plus white walls, sofa and chairs create the perfect canvas for a bold and vibrant palette. “The combo of orange, blue and super white is invigorating and happy, immediately

signifying this space as a sanctuary designed for fun,” says the designer. “The brightly patterned throw pillows, dining chairs and cushions add personality to the space and almost work like pieces of art—inspiring with color and pattern. They play off the art and add to the creative ambience.”
Several pieces of abstract art also deliver a creative energy. “Art is an integral part of design, and here we have a beautiful collection of works from local artists, including Robin Babbin and Kelly Rossetti,” says Collins. “Their paintings are calming and serene.”
“I love the feeling I get when I enter this space,” she continues. “It is impactful for me to see how, when people enter, they visibly look more relaxed and breathe more easily—shoulders drop and they just look around in awe. It is a sight for the senses with the different colors, textures and patterns. The ceiling and all the big windows looking out to the incredible view brings a sense of calm that balances the sensory experience in the interiors.”
Outside, the pool, terraces, connecting masonry stairs and walls, as well as the fire bowl area were designed by Janice Parker Landscape Architects to fit the local vernacular. “Connecticut has been farmland for centuries,” says Parker. “This was a very New England farmland–inspired design.”
The outdoor “rooms” are perfect for relaxing, working and entertaining, while the firepit area is a real draw for evening gatherings. Additionally, according to Parker, “The entire family wanted to have a farm-to-table lifestyle and experience, in a beautiful and sustainable environment.” Now, throughout the summer, the family can harvest a variety of flowers, herbs and produce from the cutting and vegetable gardens by Aventine Gardens.
Concludes Collins: “The clients love having a resort-feeling retreat right on their property for their family and guests to enjoy any time of the year.” ✹

In lieu of a typical New England red barn, architect Ryan Salvatore opted to paint this one a deep blue. “Everyone agreed it should have a more modern feel,” he says of the structure defined by vertical wood siding and a standing seam metal roof. The sliding door is a nod to its history as a carriage house. See Resources.
From the street, the pair of clapboard houses painted a cheerful turquoise in sync with their Long Island Sound locale plus a complementary blue barn look as if they have always been part of a cohesive compound. However, the property actually came together in stages, starting in 2009 when a local couple purchased the 19th-century Victorian—it once belonged to Richard H. Gillespie whose family founded the Stamford Advocate —made some renovations and moved in full time. Several years later, that same couple obtained the two adjoining properties with a barn on one and a house on the other. About the acquisition, the homeowner explains, “We had extra bedrooms in the main house, but we wanted spaces where our sons and their families could have some privacy during their visits.”
With the assistance of architect Ryan Salvatore of Burr Salvatore Architects, they turned their sights to revamping the barn and its existing office/ workshop and second-floor apartment. “The building was completely sealed off from the water, and the

apartment was in shambles,” recalls Salvatore, who shaved off the west elevation, gutted the interior, and introduced exposed post and beam construction with lots of glass to open the lower-level living spaces and upper-level bedroom to the water.
Meanwhile, the homeowner worked with nowretired interior designer Katie Goldfarb on creating a welcoming respite in the tight footprint. Extra-deep cushions on the sofa and an upholstered teal-andraspberry frame set the comfy tone and color scheme in the main living area. About her furnishings selections for the upper-level primary suite, Goldfarb says, “The bed with a louver slats headboard and attached nightstands stained ash gray felt just right in a barn.” The homeowner found the matching wrought-iron chandeliers that illuminate both levels.
In contrast, two floors down, the bunk room is an explosion of bold primary colors. “As soon as I saw the circle tiles in crayon box colors, I knew we had the kids’ bath scheme done,” says Goldfarb, noting the tiles served as inspiration for the equally exuberant linens and curtains in the bunk room.
Regarding the second house, Salvatore determined the residence located just 17 feet from the main house, would be better off gone. “It was blocking light and views, and on the extra land, we were able to build a cottage and a garage,” says the architect whose design resembles a mini version of the Victorian next door.
The studio apartment above the garage also satisfied local zoning requirements, which allowed for the addition of pool. “We were not permitted to have a pool in our own side yard,” explains the
homeowner. “The only way to achieve that was to maintain three separate lots. The pool had to have a residence to which it was an accessory, giving rise to the studio.”
Doing double duty as an office and overflow guest quarters, the homeowner seized the opportunity to outfit the studio with classic midcentury modern furniture and accessories. “It takes us back to our childhoods,” she says, and personally handpicked every item in accordance with the theme. Everything from the vintage Franciscan Starburst Atomic Age dishware and chenille bedspread to current versions of a sputnik chandelier and molded plastic Eames
side chairs, entering the room is like stepping back into the last century. “It’s my favorite place on the property,” enthuses the homeowner. “It’s like comfort food for the soul.”
Despite disparate interiors, the homeowner credits landscape architect Bruce Zellers (recently deceased) with pulling the three properties together by designing the driveway that joins all three lots and replicating the Victorian wrought-iron fencing that runs the length of their shoreline. “He also planted the dozens and dozens of hydrangeas,” she says. “They touch every part of the property and help unite it in bloom all summer long.” ✹

Terence Pieters
An ocean baby from age six, Terence Pieters grew up an avid surfer on the east coast of South Africa. He studied photography after school and was never far from the water—swimming, working on cruise ships and sailing the world. When a shoulder injury restricted surfing, he converted to photographing the ocean. Wearing a wet suit, equipped only with fins and a lightweight Sony camera encased in waterproof housing, he records the complex waterscape. “I try to capture the effortless movement of water and the way it interacts with other natural elements such as light and wind—the complementary sense of peace and calmness they create,” he says. A minute’s drive from the sea and the orange rock coast selected for his company name, the garden cottage he shares with shepherd dogs Bella and Brutus is equipped with computers where he downloads and sort through 5,000–10,000 shots per excursion to make prints that are sold locally and online at orangerocks.store.
What is your fascination with waves? Every time a wave breaks, it is unique. Although it follows a similar pattern, it has an independent mind of its own. Many variables affect how they break— size, depth, floor type, wind, whether it’s breaking near rocks or in a bay. Waves are similar to people—they are all different and influenced by their surroundings.
What is your procedure? I start studying the weather charts—wind direction and speed, clouds, the swell—a week in advance. Then I get up at 4:45 a.m. for coffee. I have to be there 20 minutes before the sun comes up to put on my wetsuit. Then I’m out about two hours, one to five times a week—sometimes three to four days in a row. The longest I’ve ever spent out is four hours.
How deep is the water? It depends on the location. From the beach, it’s about 100–1,000 feet out to sea where it’s 6–15 feet deep. But I also swim out to rocks submerged under a few feet of water; that’s the only place where the wave will break.
Why don’t you use a boat or jet ski? I swim out to fully experience the moments I capture. I feel like I’m part of nature.
How do you keep droplets off the lens? I dunk the housing just before I start shooting, and the thin film of water lasts a couple seconds before it starts running off and creating droplets. I also have a small squeegee to wipe excess water.
What light source do you use? The light is always different and constantly changing. Mostly I use natural light from the rising sun,
but afternoon light is also quite amazing—I like to swim and take photos during the sunset too.
How do you avoid sharks? I love the movie Jaws, it’s iconic. I try not to think about it, and I’m also careful about where I swim, avoiding brown, murky water or areas near river mouths. Before I go out, I scan to see if I notice any kind of activity. There are scarier things in this world, like bad people.
Do you still surf? I still ride waves from time to time. I absolutely love it, there’s something special about it, the purest form of harnessing Mother Nature. I think everyone should try surfing at least once.
How would you photograph the Loch Ness Monster? I’ve been hoping someone would ask. I’d serenade it with bagpipes to get its trust. Then I’d set up my camera with a tripod and remote trigger waiting. When it comes near, I’d calmly raise my left hand to reach out to it while pressing the remote with my right hand, capturing the most famous photo of all time.
What’s your favorite fish? Not a fish, a sea animal—the dolphin. They’re so intelligent and even ride waves.
Sharon King Hoge
