CAREY: CHICHI UBIÑA; HAIR AND MAKEUP BY WARREN TRICOMI SALON AND SPA, GREENWICH

F

ew months are associated with

specific pieces of furniture. November is certainly centered around the dining room table, and September is all about the desk. As a child, I always wondered which style of desk I would have in my new classroom. I loved the combination of an individual desk with a separate chair that seemed to be reserved for younger kids. Later, we had the one piece with the wooden arm on one side and the space for books below. Now, we are back to focusing on desks, except they are in our homes. ■ Not too long ago, I was talking with a friend whose house has five family members working from home. She was happy in the dining room, the kids grabbed other spaces, including the guest cottage, but her husband was slow to the draw. He ended up in their bedroom, but missed his stand-up desk at the office and ended up using the ironing board as his workstation. I guess necessity is the mother of invention. ■ Scenarios like this have played out in every home since the onset of the pandemic. I ended up at the kitchen table, which worked for a while until I needed to be seen on a video feed. As a result of similar tales of woe, architects and designers are being asked to create home offices for clients. Sure, we all have spaces that can be adapted for a day or two. But after weeks of multiple family members hunkered down in our homes, it became increasingly clear that we all really need a designated area to work. ■ Many years ago while visiting my mother on Achill Island on the west coast of Ireland, I was intrigued with images I saw of traveling bankers. Donkeys were used to carry a pine desk that had no legs but a flat bottom and a storage area with a top that lifted open. All of their materials would be stored there and allowed them to have a surface to work on with a flat bottom that could be placed on a table or stool in a home or business. When I started working from home this past March, I too moved from place to place like the traveling businessmen. With one big difference: They knew where they were going and for how long. I think it is safe to say none of us can say the same thing today.

the features that dominate our pages every month to identify architects, builders, landscapers and designers who could create their dream home. And, some of their stories have come full circle as these dreams that have come true can often be seen in our pages! ■ Additionally, in this issue we publish an annual “Designers You Should Know” advertorial section, which highlights professionals in our region. With this year’s influx of new homeowners into Connecticut, this will be an invaluable guide to designers in our area and begins on page 89. ■ Buying a new home is exciting (and, okay, exhausting!), and I understand that the urge to make it fabulous and uniquely yours is paramount. In turn, area designers have never been busier and many have taken great pains to set up their businesses to have the best dialogue with you while also accommodating the social distancing that our state observes. The section will tell you something about them and any area that may be their specialty. ■ I urge you to visit their websites as many have been expanded and revamped to offer a range of interactions on line—from simply setting up a call for a consultation to making an appointment for a full-scale redecoration. Or, even simpler, just pick up the phone and have a chat.

Trade Secrets & WSS THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GARDEN SALE AND TOUR BENEFITS WOMEN’S SUPPORT SERVICES

T

he mission of WSS is to create social change to end interpersonal relationship violence by challenging attitudes and beliefs about power, control and gender norms, and by advocating for victims and survivors. WSS provides a confidential 24-hour crisis hotline; emergency shelter; individual support counseling for adults and youth; legal, medical and social services advocacy; support groups, community education and prevention programs. Thanks to the generosity of its supporters and the funds raised by Trade Secrets, all of WSS’s services are free of charge. Due to Covid-19, WSS made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel Trade Secrets this year. Thankfully, many of the event’s underwriters converted their contributions to donations to WSS. This, combined with support from a virtual sale by our Trade Secrets vendors and a virtual garden tour of Bunny Williams’ garden—hosted by Bunny herself—helped make up some of the funds lost by the cancellation. The outpouring of support from the entire community, as well as the Trade Secrets guests, vendors, volunteers and underwriters has been truly uplifting to the entire WSS staff as they have continued their work throughout the pandemic. During the pandemic, WSS volunteers and staff continued their enormous efforts by providing shelter, counseling and support to clients, participating in online workshops on stress management, launching a summer program with the parks and recreation staff to deliver more than

Good Things Favorite annuals (this photo) at the fundraising event are Trade Secrets founder Bunny Williams and media mogul Martha Stewart. LionRock Farm (left) in Sharon is the site of Trade Secrets rare plant and garden antiques sale.

“It’s often hard to understand when you’re walking through all these beautiful gardens and walking around Trade Secrets buying plants that there is such a problem in this part of the world with domestic violence. This is why we do what we do because we realize that a lot of families need our help.” —Bunny Williams

960 activity bags to children, while also providing reading and awareness activities for students with volunteer certification. As many people feel a sense of getting back to normal, WSS anticipates a significant surge in shelter and housing needs as the state reopens. WSS also expects severe complications at court as staffers attempt to process a tremendous backlog of cases and deal with the anticipated increase in cases as more victims report abuse. With the support of the community and the help of Trade Secrets, WSS staff remain ready to advocate for clients and educate future generations to achieve their vision of a world in which everyone can be themselves, have healthy relationships, and live free of interpersonal relationship violence. We hope to see you all in 2021 for Trade Secrets, until then, you can help by visiting wssdv.org. —Jennifer Barbaro

“For as long as I can remember, CTC&G has been the lead sponsor of Trade Secrets. Founded 20 years ago in the garden of renowned interior designer Bunny Williams and her husband, John Rosselli, Trade Secrets is the go-to destination in Connecticut each summer. Of course, it is dear to our hearts because of our extensive coverage of beautiful gardens and meticulous landscaping, but also because it’s the principal fundraising event for Women’s Support Services [WSS], a domestic violence agency serving Northwest Connecticut and the surrounding communities in New York and Massachusetts.” —Marianne Howatson, CEO, C&G Media Group

T

ypically, september is the month when we get back to work, trading flip-flops for real shoes and the beach for the office or classroom. Not so, 2020. As the seasons change, many of us are staying put, working and learning from home, at least part-time. That's why we're dedicating this column to listings with rooms that are great for video conferencing, whether that means projecting a backdrop featuring an envyinducing seascape or something much simpler. A couple of pro tips for just that: “You are curating the view that your callers will see so that it reflects who you are,” says James Veal, founder and principal of the architecture and interior design studio Stewart-Schäfer, who also built DistanceDesigns, a division focusing on creating agile workspaces for less density and disease prevention. “We recommend having meetings in front of a wood-paneled wall or sitting in front of a wall with some artwork.”

KILLER VIEWS

let’s face it: bookcases are great, but nothing says “i’m the boss” like a baller view, casually visible over your shoulder as you log into a Zoom meeting. A peek across your pool terrace is a power move, and that’s what’s provided by a resort-like property in Redding. The pool in question is a beauty, lined on one side with an alleé of trees and framed by a modern terrace, with a built-in, 20-foot-long, hand-poured concrete table.

by the architect and interior designer Robert Couturier in 2001. Its working spaces are many and marvelous. There’s a library with steps that lead to the water’s edge. And there’s a formal dining room that was featured in The Finest Rooms in America by Thomas Jayne (Monacelli Press, 2010). The estate also offers a swimming pool, gardens designed by Miranda Brooks and a circa-1710 guesthouse. It lists for $5.9 million with Ira Goldspiel of William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty. David Neeleman, founder of five airlines including JetBlue, has put his New Canaan home on the market, asking $8.3 million. Sited on 3.4 acres at the top of Rosebrook Road, the gracious manor offers plenty of views over its lawns and gardens, which feature a pool and terrace, with a hot tub and fireplace. But it’s within the 13,000-square-foot interiors you’ll want to set up shop—especially in the wood-paneled library, where you can position your desk with a view to the ornately carved bookcases or Old World fireplace. And no worries if your house is full of noisy family members—they can

have their fun on the lower level, which offers an indoor basketball court, a 24-seat theater and a family room, as well as a bedroom, kitchen and full bathroom. Shawn Gardner with Houlihan Lawrence has the listing. And in Westport, another new listing offers multiple places to work and play. There’s a main-floor office and a massive top-floor space with birds-eye views over the entire property. Especially during steamy September, though, the smart move is the pool house, with a wall of glass doors that opens onto the terrace and free-form pool. The open-plan kitchen offers a 16-foot island, a wine bar, and Gaggenau and Thermador appliances. And the master suite has a large sitting area, a fireplace and a spa-like bathroom with a Waterworks soaking tub and a double-size glass steam shower. If you’re no longer tethered to Metro North for access to your work and office, why not consider a truly great estate: Ethelwynde, a 31-acre spread in Lenox, Massachusetts? Built in 1929, when America teetered on another financial collapse, the English-manor-style home offered a refuge from the chaos—and promises to do so again today. Among its grand rooms, the nearly 12,000-square-foot main house offers a banquet-hall-sized dining room, a conservatory with three exposures, and 11 bedrooms. There’s also a striking, 1,800-square-foot guest house with another two bedrooms and two bathrooms. It lists for $5.9 million with Robin Kencel of Compass in Greenwich. 203-249-2943.

designer Erin Gates was given the opportunity to work on a project with her architectural designer father—Kevin Tubridy of New England Design— she jumped at the chance. Tubridy had fully renovated the house, combining two waterfront properties to provide room for a three-story addition to complement the renovated existing cottage. “He had given the clients my first book [Elements of Style: Designing A Home & A Life, Simon & Schuster 2014], so when the wife decided she wanted to redo the interior decoration of the home, as well as update the kitchen and baths, she asked if I’d be interested,” says Gates. “It was my first time working on a house designed by my father, which was really special!” The client requested a bright, crisp and clean look. “She wanted it to flow together and coordinate from room to room with variations on a blue-andwhite color scheme,” notes Gates. “But nothing that screamed ‘beach house’ in a cheesy or cliché way. The layout of the first floor was changed to create a more spacious master suite, including a small but spectacular master bathroom. The upstairs guest bathrooms were done in the same finishes to keep things easy and simple, and the kitchen was given a facelift with new countertops and backsplash, fixtures and a fresh paint job.” Since this is a busy summer getaway spot for extended family, the homeowners needed everything to be kid friendly. “A beach house by nature should be laid back and comfortable. We had to make sure it wasn’t fussy but still looked elegant and tailored,” explains Gates. “With grandchildren, the beach right outside their door and ample sunlight coming into the house, you have to carefully select fabrics and finishes. The two blue sofas were a pair the client had and loved, so we reupholstered them in a Cryptonprotected Thibaut fabric. We made sure that there were great motorized sheer window shades on all the windows to not only prevent glare but also fading of the furniture and flooring. We used indoor-outdoor fabrics on the dining chairs and barstools, which I see as a must in any home these days!” The first-floor master bedroom suite was designed as a peaceful sanctuary. “This bedroom is the true definition of a retreat,” says Gates. “The view is incredible, and the layout of the room really makes the most of it with a bank of windows showcasing the waterfront location. We framed these with really showstopping window treatments that added to the ethereal feel instead of adding weight. The horizontal stripe sheers are on motorized tracks layered with motorized blackout shades. And in order to keep this room feeling so peaceful, we helped design a bank of built-ins for ample storage in addition to the walk-in closet space.” The completed project fulfilled all of the client’s desires. “By reusing the quality items she already had and loved, adding unique and beautiful new pieces to make it feel updated and selecting finishes that are timeless and not trendy, I feel like this new design will last for decades and not look tired or dated,” notes Gates. “The combination of comfort, ease of living and a serene palette all came together into one very special home.” september 2020 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

ENISE DAVIES HAS LONG known that if she really wants to learn about a new client’s taste she doesn’t ask just about preferred colors and styles, materials or furnishings. Rather, the Weston-based interior designer hands each and every new client a questionnaire to fill out, with such questions as preferred coffee order at Starbucks, favorite TV show, ideal artist whose work they’d hang on their walls, do they cook or order in, and whether they want a house guest to stay for two hours, two days, or two weeks. “The questionnaire is all part of my strategy in finding out about the character of a person and their style,” explains Davies, founder and CEO of D2 Interieurs. For the owners of this seven-bedroom Redding neo-Colonial— Lily Burns and her husband Tony Hernandez—Davies learned that “Lily definitely had a vision. Once I ‘got that’ and once I ‘got them’ as a couple, the job of designing and decorating these rooms was easy.” september 2020 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

LILY WANTED A HOME WHOSE SOUL REFLECTED THE BONES OF THE HOUSE

As the owners and founders of Jax Media—an award-winning film and television development and production company—Burns and Hernandez are used to devising and telling stories. One part of the story of this house, which functions for them and their two children as a second home apart from their Brooklyn townhouse, is that they purchased it at auction. “It’s complicated, but the house was in escrow for six months, and when it finally came up for purchase, my husband was right there on the front lawn bidding,” recalls Burns. In terms of decorating drama, however, there was none—and for that, the homeowners and Davies are grateful. “I’m not a tinkerer,” says Burns. “I wanted all the decorating to be done and totally finished, so that my family could live here and not worry about anything and be cozy.” Although Davies and Burns forged a strong collaborative bond, the two worked together almost completely by virtual means. “We did the entire project by email,” recalls Burns, who admits to a working schedule that doesn’t allow for time to shop. She and Davies traded ideas, sent reference photos, and made decisions in tandem. Davies discerned that Burns’s preferred aesthetic for this house was a clean, modern one, “but with soul,” Davies emphasizes. “Lily wanted a home whose soul reflected the bones of the house, that would remain true to the style of the house, which dates from 1925.” Davies chose what she characterizes as products and furnishings with an inherent warmth and natural, organic patina. She kept the palette neutral throughout to allow every piece of art and accessory to stand out, especially light fixtures, which Davies likens “to the jewelry of a room.” So brightly attuned is Davies to the lighting effect in a room that whenever possible she introduces three sources of lighting—for issues of function and decoration. Every room in the home features a notable, even sculptural, 68

lighting fixture, especially apparent on the ceilings of the master bedroom, dining room, living room, and over the kitchen island. “You can have too many stars in a room, so I try to limit it to the lighting element,” says Davies. Burns and Hernandez were both content to let Davies set the scene at their home. And Burns recalls that the moment they took possession of the house, she changed out every light fixture and replaced every piece of gold hardware with silver, even the window clasps. Although almost no new construction was necessary inside, Davies performed what she likes to call “kitchen Botox.” By that, she means substantive cosmetic work on the countertops, backsplash, paint colors, and lighting. “Who doesn’t like a little bit of Botox treatment?” asks Davies, who points to the custom metal lighting fixture she commissioned over the island and the subtle oyster-gray hue chosen for the cabinets. And the much-used media room is furnished with “the biggest couch and ottoman I have ever seen,” says Burns. Davies hung posters there of some of the shows the couple has produced. In this space, their fictional stories assume a prominent role in the real-life, ongoing story of their home. ✹ september 2020 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

S ANYONE WHO HAS DOWNSIZED will tell you, those what-to-keep, what-to-toss decisions are never easy. But for interior designer Andrea Cross of Axel Interiors, the move from a spacious 300-yearold farmhouse—where she and her husband raised their two sons—to a sleeker model with enviable views of Long Island Sound, making such choices put her right in her comfort zone. “I am the kind of designer who is all about function,” says Cross. “I designed the house largely from the inside out, with highly detailed room layouts considered before exterior elevations were even drafted.” The task of configuring the large multifunctional living room, generous master suite and expansive decks Cross envisioned into a cedar-sided building with a gambrel roof fell to architect Jim Denno, who had to work within the confines of a tight quarter-acre lot. He was also charged with maximizing the views. “When I have a project like this, I want people to come in the front door and see the water immediately,” says Denno, noting in this case—thanks to a pair of arched portals with glass openings—visitors can spy Long Island Sound before they even ring the doorbell. Immediately beyond, a dramatic spiral plaster stairway—a departure from the boxy, switchback variety that routinely graces traditional architecture— continues the curvilinear theme. “While the scale of the house is modest, the staircase achieves a grand effect within the compressed footprint,” says Cross. The soft, rounded elements repeat with a barrel vaulted ceiling and a

semicircular covered porch. “I like using curves in a project because so much of architecture is linear,” she adds. Despite the waterfront locale, the house is anything but beachy. While the muted palette of soft marine blues and earthy neutrals echo the sand and sea, the mindful mix of family furnishings that made the cut—including her husband’s favorite wingback chair—with more contemporary pieces strike a sophisticated chord. In the living room, for example, a crescent shaped sofa, two midcentury chairs, and classic millwork bookshelves nicely hang together. And in the dining room, the clean lines of a Fortunycovered banquette balance an antique mahogany Georgian extension table. “Aesthetically, I picked things that could work well with others,” says Cross. When it came to the kitchen, the designer was firm that “elegance could not be sacrificed in the name of functionality.” Here the combination of plank-matched natural walnut lower cabinets and white opaque resin uppers all with high level interior components, and an island fashioned from a single slab of black walnut check both boxes. While windows and water dominate (“there are no chandeliers or pendants that interrupt the sight lines, and with the exception of two

antique wing chairs, all the seating is low-slung,” Cross notes), adequate wall space was reserved to display the museum-quality, 20th-century art collection that includes works by realist Robert Henri and impressionist Theodore Butler, the designer/homeowner inherited from her parents. An interior scene by impressionist Philip Leslie Hale was reserved for the master bedroom, where the painting inspired the hints of lavender, coral and pale pink that pepper the space. “Many of the fabrics in the room have just a slight hint of shell pink as does the peignoir worn by the model in the painting,” explains Cross, who opted to establish a sense of calm in the space by eliminating distractions like televisions, bookcases and anything that could be construed as clutter. “The color story is tight, but because of a variety of interesting and soft textures like alpaca and leather, the room still feels rich and layered.” The same could be said of all the rooms that benefitted from Cross’s organizational bent and her discerning eye. “While a range of styles and periods are represented, the interiors are nonetheless harmonious due to the consistent level of quality of the furnishings,” she says. “The house is intentionally more luxe than laid back, but still welcoming and approachable.” ✹ september 2020 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

’M SO LUCKY because I have a client who is a friend,” says Westport-based designer Amy Coe, founder of Amy Coe Home. “This project was about having fun and working as a team.” Coe had met the homeowner more than 14 years ago, and when the client decided to build in Westport, she called Coe right away. “I had been working with Amy for almost five years at my other house, and she almost died when I told her we were going to build,” explains the homeowner. “I knew Amy would be the right person for this. Translating key pieces to the new house from the old was key in this project, and I knew she could do that while making it feel like a true, comfortable family home.” Coe approached this project with the goal of creating spaces that were cozy and timeless with a modern bent. “It’s always about getting to know the client—and I had a leg up on this one—there are two dogs, three kids and two adults here. That’s a lot of movement! I wanted clean lines and no clutter.” Coe used a neutral light blue/gray paint color to unify the downstairs and multiple shades of soft blues and greens with pops of true navy, deep marine blue and pearl gray as threads throughout house. In the entry, a cerused-oak table holds the client’s collection of chinoiserie, and a custom navy-and-white area rug grounds the space. “I love how Amy took some of my more traditional pieces and bridged them with more

contemporary ones. I have a lot of antiques from my family and didn’t want anything to look too fussy or precious,” says the homeowner. “Everything is very luxe meets humble and formal meets playful,” adds Coe. Coe makes the case for texture being about more than textiles in the kitchen where marble tile mixes with honey-colored cerused oak and metal. Off the kitchen is a sunroom/breakfast room. “The flow between the kitchen and sunroom increases the living potential, and we wanted this room to make a bold statement.” Coe took Galbraith & Paul’s classic Lotus print— that the homeowner had in a powder room at the old house and loved—and 00 84

papered the walls. She added a pair of oversize lanterns in a custom color. A nubby blue performance fabric on the chairs has a soft hand, but stands up to spills. “Nothing is too precious,” says Coe. “I wanted this family to really live in this house.” Two deep sofas in the living room invite you to dive in and a wooden Tritter Feefer coffee table is sturdy enough to put your feet up on. Above the molding is an installation of ceramic disks by artist Lisa Carroll. “We needed something spectacular but not formal to bring this double-height ceiling down to earth,” says Coe. “I wanted to put more navy in the room and the client knew the artist.”

The family’s favorite part of the house didn’t happen overnight. “Originally, it was supposed to be a bedroom,” says the client, “but that’s what is great about Amy. She said, ‘let’s take our time and see what this house is missing.’” They ended up creating a bunk room with various bed nooks to sleep friends and family who come to visit. The client had seen a glossy blue floor in Florida and wanted to re-create it here. “We added all these different layers and nooks to make it feel cozy and warm,” says Coe. The designer adds, “We wanted to make sure that each piece we selected has the ability not only to look great but also to function. Part of our job is to bring the client the best of the best, even if it takes a while. Otherwise you could walk into a showroom and have any old stuff arrive.” Concludes the client: “We took so much time designing what we wanted, and there are so many personal pieces. Add to that having my friend come and do the installation. It makes it special.” ✹

Wine With A View Located in Little Compton, RI, Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards is a wine and food destination spot.

BARONESS RECOMMENDS NEWPORT VINEYARDS

On Aquidneck Island, New England’s largest wine estate, Newport Vineyards, sits on 100 acres of preserved farmland surrounded by Narragansett Bay. “The farm was acquired by my great grandfather in 1917 and has miles of stone walls surrounding the vineyards,” says co-owner John Nunes, who with his brother Paul planted vineyards in the mid ’90s. The brothers built a 3,000-square-foot winery, restaurants and microbrewery (specializing in hazy New England IPAs). “With the bay’s influences, we have a warmer microclimate,” says winemaker George Chelf. A U.S. Army veteran, Chelf was stationed in Hanau, Germany, where he visited vineyards and developed a love of Riesling. “I specialize in dry Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris,” he says. “We don’t have the climate for big reds, though hybrids like Landot Noir do well here.” Newport Vineyards produces 20,000 cases of 26 different wines each year. newportvineyards.com.

GREENVALE VINEYARDS

The 60-acre farmstead goes back to the mid 19th-century and is run by the family’s eighth generation. “My ancestor John Barstow designed the farm around the utopian concept of living one with the land as described in the 1859 book Country Life by Robert Morris Copeland,” says owner Nancy Wilson. A restored carriage house became the tasting room in 1999 at this boutique winery producing only 2,000 cases and

selling much estate fruit to Newport Vineyards, which is a mile away. Sitting waterfront along the Sakonnet River, the vineyard pioneered Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris and Albariño in coastal New England. Nancy’s son Bill became winemaker last year. “We handpick all the grapes and are moving toward sustainable viticulture,” says Bill. “In our Chardonnay, we get incredible tropical aromas, and our Cabernet Franc pops with peppery, smoky, rich plum fruit.” greenvale.com.

CAROLYN’S SAKONNET VINEYARD

Situated on 150 acres in Little Compton across the Sakonnet River, the property has become a celebrated food and wine destination. Guests can sit outside on the 300 Adirondack chairs facing the vineyards. Winemaker Elaine Phipps, who has been at the vineyard for 36 years through three owners—eight years under the present owner, philanthropist Carolyn Rafaelian—began as a field worker. “We have morning fog, afternoon breezes but also a bit too much moisture,” says Phipps. “The winter-hardy hybrid grape Vidal Blanc, cultivated extensively in Canada, does well in this region.” Phipps’s favorite is her dry Gewürztraminer. “It has powerful wild rose aromas,” she says. The winery— which makes only 3,500 cases a year—is known for its Vidal Blanc

• A perfect match for spicy Asian cuisine, Newport Gewürztraminer ($22) exhibits a fragrance of rose petal. • Greenvale Pinot Gris Ramato ($22) is a showstopping orange wine with light tannins and peachy lemony flavor. • Vidal Blanc Sakonnet Siren ($12) has a touch of sweetness and pineapple, grapefruit and lime flavors. • With characteristic apple and pear notes and fresh acidity, the dry Newport Riesling ($18) has earned many awards. • Greenvale Chardonnay ($23) exhibits tropical aromas of mango and papaya and resembles unoaked French Chablis. • Made from Gewürztraminer, Sakonnet White Lotus ($30) has powerful fragrances of lychee, citrus and wild rose. • Newport Landot Noir ($22), a hybrid grape which tastes like a fruitier, less alcoholic Zinfandel, has earthy blackberry and plum flavors. • Made in Bordeaux style, Greenvale Cabernet Franc ($27), shows spicy, smoky, rich plum notes and soft tannins. • A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Lemberger, Sakonnet Blessed Blend Red ($30) expresses cherry and chocolate notes and matches with grilled meats.

MEET THE DESIGNER

John Willey

Offering thoughtful and refined interior and architectural design along with construction management, Willey Design is noted for expressing diverse clients’ points of view with provocative and luxurious results.—Sharon King Hoge 1. How did you decide on stone countertops in your kitchen? I found the granite locally and felt it had a wonderful textural quality, a rural vibe. It really made the kitchen.

2. What’s a favorite souvenir you and your husband acquired in your travels? When we were in the Mexican town of Todos Santos—which has a charming arts community—we found a pair of abstract fish sculptures. One is bleached and the other is natural walnut. We had Lucite pedestals made to showcase them in our home.

4. What’s a favorite aspect of fatherhood? The joy of seeing things through my daughter’s eyes. I designed the landscaping and the Zen fountain in our yard, and it’s a lovely place to relax and explore nature with her.

5. What is a design item that you favor? I love Ingo Maurer’s beautiful Floatation pendant—three layers of cascading rice-paper discs. Light as a kite, it hangs there and softens every room.

6. Why did you paint your front door bright red? Back in the day it was a historical color; it told passing people that they could come in and shelter from the journey. I amped it up a little as a classical punch to the chalky gray house. 7. What do you like about living in Northwest Connecticut? I’m from the flat Midwest, so I love the undulations of the gentle hills before they get more dramatic as you go farther north.

I

llinois native John Willey originally intended to study architecture, but soon realized he favored the dynamics of design over drafting plumbing systems. His experience runs from working with Vicente Wolf and Jeffrey Bilhuber to being the in-house designer for architect Steven Lerner. Established in 2006, his own firm, Willey Design, implements full-service projects: from drafting plans and elevations to installing beautiful interiors. With last year’s arrival of baby daughter Marlo, Willey and his husband “cut the cord” and left the city. The firm opened an office in Lakeville, and they moved fulltime into the house they’d purchased five years ago and updated as a getaway home. “Every weekend, we found we wanted to stay a little longer,” says Willey. “After 14 years of crazy work, I was ready to move on and wanted space to be a dad.” Seeing things anew through his daughter’s eyes, Willey is looking forward to experiencing the impact of “a little female energy” in the house. willeydesign.com.

3. How has your palette evolved over the years? I’ve mellowed to a cooler palette—grays and blues.
