Cupid Strikes!

Aldrich Gala in the Garden A Celebration of 52 Artists Saturday, April 30, 2022 7 pm Join us for cocktails, a seated dinner, and auction in the Museum’s Sculpture Garden

professional worlds do align. While photographing jewelry designer Ashley McCormick’s lovely new home for this issue, I noticed more workmen than I typically see at a site for a photo shoot. Ashley then mentioned her upcoming wedding was going to take place in two weeks right in the garden. I was beginning to understand what it takes to design a beautiful wedding. ■ In fact, several of the staff at C&G Media Group were coming to that same realization because Cupid had struck! Every type of wedding was being discussed, and each bride had a clear vision of what she wanted. Now, making it happen was a different story. As if planning a wedding isn’t difficult enough, add the lingering effects of the pandemic and you have a stress level that is off the charts! For example, scrambling to find the right venue is akin to finding the right house—except it’s yours for less than a day. Add securing the band, florist and all the myriad people who play a role in making the day a success, and you can understand how difficult it can all be. ■ Here at the magazine, our marathon weddings started last year with two beautiful garden weddings: in the spring, Jenna Abrams to Patrick Miles, and in the fall, Ann Branca to Kyle Klouman. Lovely, and so reflective of what these two couples wanted. Mary Fitzgerald is in the throes of planning two weddings—her daughter, Caroline Belger, and fiancé, Christopher Lockwood, could not resist the coastal charm of Savannah and are getting married in a few weeks; and Mary’s son, Cameron, and his fiancée, Kelly Pinchbeck, opted for something closer to their homes and will marry at Woodway Country Club in Darien. Our own Melissa Groher and her fiancé, Addison Rosenbluth, are opting for something historic—Hildene, the Lincoln family home in Manchester, Vermont. And in October, our daughter, Adaire Carey, will marry Alexander Gould at Lion Rock Farm in Sharon, Connecticut. Adaire and Alex felt that it struck the right note: elegant but not stuffy and with magnificent vistas! ■ We have all shared resources and tips, and are excited for these couples. Planning a wedding is great practice for defining their style and will help them when they buy that first home. We may give you some snaps of these events so you can see how everything turned out. Maybe we should change our name to Cottages & Weddings… at least for this year!

Hartford! CTC&G is delighted to announce the Junior League of Hartford’s 2022 Designer Showhouse! ■ It brings me back to 2012 when CTC&G spearheaded the restoration and redecoration of 17 public rooms and the cottage at the 100-year-old Connecticut Governor’s Residence, with 13 designers and countless product donations. ■ This time, Honorary Design Chair and renowned designer Anthony Baratta, along with 20 designers, will transform a classic Tudor-style home located on one of West Hartford’s most sought-after streets. The restoration will feature a beautiful grand entrance foyer, large living room with an impressive fireplace and original wood detailing, an expansive kitchen, five bedrooms, an in-law suite and a full lower level that leads out to beautiful park-like grounds and stonework. ■ The home will be featured in CTC&G’s July/ August issue, on cottagesgardens.com, on C&GTV and all social media channels. ■ Mark your calendars for the gala preview party on June 3, and the house will be open to the public June 4–26. We asked the designers whose work is featured in this issue to share their thoughts on how they refresh a space. JOHN MICHAEL MURPHY

KIM CARAVELLA

MONICA FRIED

ASHLEY McCORMICK

Even in my own home, I find the easiest way to update a room is with new lighting and accessories. I recently gave my living room a little facelift with new table lights from artist Danny Kaplan and accessories found at the Field + Supply market. It was the perfect way to incorporate some of today’s artisanal features and flavor without replacing all the large pieces of furniture. Interior designer, monicafrieddesign.com, “The Gathering Spot” (page 64).

24

ctc&g cottagesgardens.com april 2022

I find the best way to reinvigorate a room is to strip away and delete fussy details like clunky moldings or busy builtins, then apply a fresh coat of paint (my favorite hues are White Dove and Swiss Coffee). I start with a soothing, blank canvas. The beautiful fabrics and wallpaper then act as points of punctuation against sleek furniture to create a statement and truly transform a space. Homeowner, jewelry designer, ashabyadm. com, “Coastal Collaboration” (page 74). —Mary Fitzgerald

MCCORMICK, MURPHY: ELLEN MCDERMOTT; CARAVELLA: JOHN GRUEN; FRIED: MATTHEW WILLIAMS

I spend time with my clients to see which pieces are meaningful and could be used as a possible starting point for a room refresh. Perhaps it is a carpet or an important family heirloom that triggers the re-creation and reimagining of the space. It then becomes an exploration of other objects, textures and colors to start envisioning the complete room. This collaborative effort results in a pleasing combination of old and new. Interior designer and homeowner, jmmny.com. “Triple Play” (page 54).

When I refresh a room, I start by layering largescale, original works of art to create an immediate visual impact. I add one-of-a-kind pieces; vintage pillows, found accessories— such as architectural remnants—baskets, trays and woven, textured throw blankets. To create excitement, I juxtapose natural materials and textures, and place organic shapes against modern furniture. Interior designer, habitatgreenwich.com, “River Run” (page 46).

ven just talking about her dinner parties, Filipa de Abreu exudes the kind of enveloping energy that makes you want to be a guest in her home. She comes alive at the thought of gathering friends around the table in her sublime, mural-filled dining room. As a brand ambassador for Tory Burch and Themis Z, among others, Filipa has plenty of opportunities to entertain. She recalls that her mother entertained formally while Filipa was growing up in London. When Filipa entertains today, she invites her children to get involved and help host at her dinners. They escort guests to their seats and even help with serving. Filipa fills the table with beautiful objects and prefers a relaxed and laid-back ambience. For example, in addition to having the guests’ names on place cards, she also adds a different quote to each one. She then asks each guest to share the quote aloud with

he word “unprecedented” is often used to describe

today’s real estate market (and the times we live in, for that matter). Among the housing sector’s most stunning statistics is this one: Home sale prices rose nearly 19 percent last year, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller US National Home Price Index. That increase represents the largest gain in the 34-year history of the index, far exceeding the 10.4 percent growth seen in 2020. Which brings us to the $3,000,449 question (a number chosen to represent the average sale price in Greenwich these days): Will prices continue to climb? Experts say rising mortgage rates could be a cooling factor. But record-low inventory

levels—the number of homes on the market—could mean the law of supply and demand will keep prices high. Like the season’s first daffodils, for-sale signs are starting to crop up, so we’ll know soon. Until then, here is a handful of the best and the brightest listings, along with quotes representing how brokers and shoppers are reacting to them. “EVERYBODY LOVES THIS HOUSE.”

Buyers don’t tend to come to a consensus about for-sale homes and that’s a good thing: There’s something for everyone, no matter

your taste or budget. But a Westport home breaks that rule, appealing to buyers who like stylish seaside abodes (many, many people) and who have $10.8 million to spend (you know who you are). Located in Westport’s popular Compo Beach area, the circa-2008 manse has a lot to love, from the rooftop widow’s walk to the ground-floor wall of floor-to-ceiling glass doors, which open onto a terrace with a wrap-around infinity pool and spa. Adjoining terraces offer additional resort-like amenities, including an outdoor kitchen and pretty dining and lounging spaces. Within the 11,743-square-foot interiors, there are formal dining and living spaces connected by paneled and arched-ceiling passageways. And among the seven bedrooms, the main suite is spectacular, with its marble fireplace, spa bath and private balcony overlooking Long Island Sound. Brian Milton of Compass has the listing.

COMPOUND INTEREST

Even as the pandemic wanes, there’s still interest in properties that offer the all-in-one amenities of a compound, notably separate wings to accommodate extra family members and generations, ample spaces for work and play, and plenty of room to roam on private grounds. This Greenwich property offers all that and more—anchored by a nearly 24,000-squarefoot main house. And on the 10-acre grounds there is an infinity-edged pool and spa, as well as access to (and views of) pretty, private Converse Lake. It lists for $32 million with Shelly Tretter Lynch of Compass in Greenwich. 203-550-8508.

It's called great island for a reason: the 60-acre tract of land off the coast of Darien is the largest private island ever to be offered for sale on the East Coast. Currently, the property is owned by a trust controlled by the Steinkraus family, descendants of a baking powder tycoon. Among the family’s avid equestrians is William Steinkraus, an Olympic show jumper who won a gold medal in 1968. They commissioned architect Rafael Gustavino, famous for his work on Grand Central Station and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, to build their equestrian facilities, which include an 18-stall granite stable, indoor and outdoor riding rings, a polo field and paddocks. The property also offers sandy beaches along its mile of coastline and a deep-water dock that can accommodate a 100-foot yacht. Then there’s the 13,000-square-foot villa built in 1905 and renovated by renowned architect Addison Mizner. With amenities too numerous to list here, one stands out: In a cellar located two floors below the main house, there are hundreds of bottles of whiskey and wine brought over by famed rumrunner Bill McCoy (aka, the Real McCoy) during Prohibition. As the most expensive residential property on the Connecticut market, it lists for $100 million with Jennifer Leahy of Douglas Elliman.

EAR-ROUND WATER VIEWS first attracted the homeowners to this Mianus River property, where they built a new five-bedroom home. “We envisioned a contemporary home, a bit traditional on the outside but modern, clean and spacious on 48

the inside,” notes the homeowner. When it came time to furnish the interiors, they knew exactly where to turn. “Kim Caravella owns the cutest design store in our area—we love her style,” says the wife. “Besides, she was recommended by one of our daughters.”

“They just love my shop, HabitatGreenwich!” says interior designer Kim Caravella. Her Cos Cob boutique—chockfull of artwork, furniture, textiles, accessories and gifts—showcases her talent at mixing Old World with New, modern with traditional. “I would describe these homeowners’

aesthetic as modern and fresh mixed with a respect for nature and natural materials, with a unique collected and traveled feeling.” The directive from the homeowners included creating warm, functional spaces to enjoy with their family and for entertaining with friends.

“They loved the idea of playing with neutrals— whites and woods—and how I mix modern pieces with organic shapes and natural materials,” notes Caravella. The designer started with a neutral palette to complement the river views, the cleanlined architecture and an extensive art collection.

“The homeowners’ private artwork collection inspired my choices for living room pillow pattern and color choices,” explains the designer. “They have a pair of colorful works from Uruguayan artist Ruisdael Suarez that I am completely obsessed with.” april 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

“THEY LOVED HOW I MIX MODERN PIECES WITH ORGANIC SHAPES AND NATURAL MATERIALS” Caravella’s skill with scale and proportion also came into play in the living room. “It was such a large room, I found a wonderful one-of-a-kind plank vintage coffee table that was huge, and the homeowners were a bit nervous,” says the designer. “But I knew the scale and proportion, along with the patina, was absolutely perfect for serving and playing games too.” Handwoven poufs add a layer of pattern, texture and fun, “plus they’re functional for additional seating. And I added a slatted outdoor teak console into the scheme, which was unexpected,” says Caravella. “So much about this home is about the tranquil view and nature, and I love the idea of bringing natural elements in.” Textural moments continue in the kitchen with eye-catching rattan pendants. “I felt natural handwoven pendants would be a fantastic contrast to the modern clean lines, warm and visually

HAT IS THE SUM OF 1 + 1 + 1? If you’re doing the math in Litchfield County, the answer is “one.” A vintage farmhouse, a schoolhouse and a tobacco barn have been combined into a single spacious residence in one of the last remaining agricultural sections of Washington Depot. Originally cobbled together as a multi-dwelling with separate doors and quarters for three related branches of a family, the hodgepodge languished on the market until a designer and artist recognized its potential and transformed it into a rambling, airy home that retains a farmhouse flavor. 56

ctc&g cottagesgardens.com april 2022

Undaunted by a structure that defied blueprints, husbands artist Jack Rosenberg and designer John Michael Murphy—veterans of renovating several previous homes—brought their skills to the challenge. Rosenberg is Chair of the Connecticut Arts Council & Foundation, while Murphy has worked with John Saladino’s firm, designed room vignettes at Bloomingdale’s, created homes for Bette Midler and Nathan Lane, and devised dressing rooms for Matthew Broderick, and Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa. Moving in just at the beginning of the pandemic lockdown called for special ingenuity. With construction firms restricted, the pair sought out individual carpenters and craftspeople who could work on the premises with social distance between them. Ultimately one carpenter, his helper and a single painter accomplished the preponderance of the work.

Sitting Pretty (this page) For the sitting room, Murphy designed a sculptural table with pull-out upholstered chairs. The oil painting is by Greg Johnston. Casual Chic Once a tobacco barn, the family room (above) is furnished with a Saladino sofa, Hermès throw and an antique tray from Michael Trapp, while antique elevator doors from Olde Good Things flank floor-to-ceiling windows. The room’s bar area (left) is lined with a Schumacher wallpaper. See Resources.

Murphy’s first step was to create a lofty multistory entrance hall straddling the original farmhouse and school. Blank walls were opened up with six-over-six windows revealing views of sprawling meadows and the double silo at a neighboring farm, whose 102-year-old owner stills harvests hay. With shops and showrooms closed and off limits, Murray sourced supplies and fixtures online and had to wait several months for Armac Martin in England to reopen and manufacture the refrigerator handle, which was the 81st piece required for the kitchen hardware. Unable to purchase dentil molding, the carpenter cut out and attached each separate “tooth” to the mantel molding. Bedroom headboards were fashioned from wall sections extracted for the windows. Meeting the challenge of integrating the quirks of three architectural styles, overhead beams were painted white to mask their irregularity and hollowed out to accommodate electric wires. Several different types of wood in the various floors were blended by staining all of them a single pine-like shade. Doors, which turned up at the oddest places (one leading to the schoolhouse belfry where chimes had called students to class), were retained where possible, along with their antique hardware. Multiuse vignettes were created to ease awkward transitions between spaces. A custom sculptural table with pull-out chairs adds visual interest while passing between the living and dining rooms. Because the family room is accessed through the kitchen, cooking appliances are stored out of sight in built-in compartments, and Murphy custom-coated the microwave oven in high-gloss paint to make it “something worth looking at.” In addition to featuring Rosenberg’s paintings and ceramic pieces, april 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

TWO OUTSIDE BARNS ADD ADDITIONAL SPACE, ONE CONVERTED INTO A POOL HOUSE AND STUDIO

Murphy incorporated decorations from past homes that carry out the structure’s eclectic theme of pleasant surprises. “When I like things, I make them work,” he says. A mantel purchased at auction in London serves as an entryway console below Hollywood Regency milk glass lights. Camellia sconces from a Chanel boutique purchased at the Paris flea market light up the dining room, and a mirror from Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ childhood Bouvier home in East Hampton fits exactly on a wall in the kitchen. Two outside barns add additional space, one converted into a pavilioned pool house and studio for Rosenberg, the other, a big red cow barn serves as a four-car garage and “rainy day space” for outdoor parties. Original inverted sea scroll molding was restored and re-created to unify the front façade of the home, uniting the original structures into a single residence that friends refer to as the “One-derful House.” ✹ april 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

LL THE KIDS WANT TO PLAY at this house. The homeowner has often overheard the friends of her three children say, “Please, please can’t we go to your house?” And while those friends of her twelve-, ten-, and seven-year-old children like to sit at the expansive kitchen island or at the cozy windowed banquette of the lounge or in one of the colorful bedrooms, there is one problem at the house. “I’ve heard that we don’t have good snacks here,” says the homeowner. “After all, we go organic, and the kids want Oreos.” Despite the healthful snacks, though, both children and adults like to socialize in this Greenwich house, not only because the homeowners are welcoming, but also because the rooms are so bright and colorful, with multiple seating areas to accommodate them. When Monica Fried was commissioned by the homeowners to design the interiors, a prime directive was to make every room welcoming, certainly for the family members but also for the company they would host. house was built in 2018 and had been lived in by only one other owner. “It’s essentially brand new, with a beautiful layout and scale,” says Fried, “but it still felt like a spec home—very white, very basic in its finishes.” The homeowner concurs by adding, “The place was a white box, very vanilla, and while we knew it was a great house, the perfect one for us, what we first encountered didn’t completely speak to us.” She and Fried collaborated on making the house, as the homeowner says, “warm, cozy, inviting and livable, but also chic and sophisticated. Monica blended that aesthetic very well.” 68

ctc&g cottagesgardens.com april 2022

Within a six-month period during the height of Covid, Fried and her client were able to expedite the move from the family’s smaller home in Bronxville, New York, to this house, filling it with new furnishings and accessories. “They brought very little, actually nothing, from the former house,” recalls Fried. “They wanted a whole fresh start and, in doing so, to create a cohesive vibe throughout. The client is super decisive, with great taste, so we were able to easily source products and meet regularly, albeit with masks on at opposite ends of a room.” While the original ceiling moldings were kept, dated shiplap boards in

the family room were removed, bathroom hardware was replaced, and in the kitchen, Fried configured a new stove elevation and stainless-steel-and-brass hood. “We took the kitchen up a big notch, making it a standout room, with Waterworks fixtures, Calacatta marble surfaces and a marble backsplash behind the stove,” says Fried. Indeed, many of the childrens’ friends like to sit at the kitchen island to watch the homeowner cook and prepare (hopefully, nonorganic) snacks for them. Fried, who typically prefers a more monochromatic palette, gladly responded to the client’s wish for multiple hues. “I’ve become more of a colorist because of the client,” she says. “I’ve learned to love color because of her love of it.” Much of the home’s more vibrant color schemes appear in the bedrooms. “It’s important to harmonize colors,” Fried notes, “and to establish a flow in the house so that it never feels jarring to go from room to room. The colors we used are in the same family of tones, yet bright and energetic.”

I want green or teal,’ while the youngest wanted an explosion of pink like something out of Candyland. My son chose something more muted, skewing to taupes and blues. But in every room, the

wallpaper pattern that Monica found is magical.” So well and so collaboratively did Fried and her client work together that the homeowner is reluctant to call it complete. “I’m happiest when I have another project to do at home,” says the homeowner. “I’m looking at other places in the home now to attend to. Monica understands me and I understand her, and I just don’t want this project to be over.” ✹ april 2022 cottagesgardens.com ctc&g

Coastal COLLABORATION JEWELRY DESIGNER ASHLEY MCCORMICK CREATES A DREAM FAMILY HOME THAT’S JUST HER STYLE BY ANN KAISER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ELLEN MCDERMOTT

Bright Ideas In the great room, Ashley McCormick (shown) worked with decorator Eileen Lane to realize her vision for a new mantel. RH sofas are softened by pillows in textiles from designers like John Robshaw, Nina Campbell and Madeaux. The coffee table is from Boho Patio. See Resources.

shley McCormick and her husband, Naveen, moved into this Fairfield County home in May 2021, and celebrated their wedding there only four months later. With such a tight turnaround, it’s a good thing that Ashley had been preparing for this for years. “She’s been designing since she was nine years old,” says her mother, Mayling McCormick, who regularly took Ashley along on trips to the D&D Building throughout her childhood. With such well-honed taste, it’s no surprise that Ashley grew up to be the designer behind the well-known jewelry brand ASHA by Ashley McCormick, which she founded in college and has since expanded into fine jewelry, handbags and dresses. In many ways, the home is a culmination of the style she’s been refining for years. “My aesthetic overall is classic, modern, fresh,” says Ashley, “and that’s definitely infused into the house.” Ashley and Naveen had always loved the road that the house is on and thought it would make a wonderful home for their blended family of five. “It’s very coastal and reminiscent of summers that I spent on Nantucket growing up,” says Ashley. It just needed a few edits to make it their own— plus a little help from Mom. 76

“I had a vision of almost like Nantucket-meets-Malibu-meets Connecticut,” says Ashley, who also incorporated her husband’s well-traveled taste into the design. Ashley leans a little more modern than her mom, but as they waded through fabrics, paper and paint chips together, Mayling helped her find the right balance of clean lines and traditional style to capture the serene, coastal feeling she was after. To take full advantage of the shingle-style home’s beautiful bones and gorgeous light, it was more about editing than adding. Stripping and restaining the floors in a lighter color instantly made the place feel airier and brighter. (“It’s amazing what White Dove will do,” notes Mayling.) Removing some heavier molding and built-ins gave the house a sleeker, more serene feel. From there, they layered in a mix of modern and classic. A cool, angular sectional sofa next to a patterned wingback chair. Luscious wallpapers that are pretty but not precious. Each room is a serene, peaceful, beautiful moment, created through clean lines and a rich palette of subtle color and texture. “We like to decorate with touches of Morocco coupled with Paris,” says Mayling. The overall effect is cozy but unfussy, modern but warm. In the dining room, Ashley used an Oscar de la Renta for Lee Jofa wallpaper that she’s loved for years. “I knew that I wanted the dining room to be a ‘wow’ room,” she says. “I deliberately kept the rest of the house more serene so that the dining room was really a punctuation point.” It’s now the setting for many dinners with family and friends. love to entertain at the house—their first party there was their wedding reception, after all. The family of five uses every room in the house, but there are some favorites. The primary bedroom is a sun-filled haven with gorgeous water views. The couple surprised each of their three children, ages 8, 10 and 11, with their own beautifully decorated bedrooms, that are sweet enough for now, and chic enough for later. One of Ashley’s most-used spaces is the laundry room, where she used a quatrefoil floor tile, a motif that often shows up in her jewelry designs. And her love of gardening, which also frequently shows up in her designs, is often on display in the mudroom. She enjoys creating arrangements there with flowers gathered from her back garden. Says Ashley: “The house is really a mélange of all of my favorite things.” ✹ 82

ENTERTAINING

Carolyn Klemm Famous actors and musicians, renowned scientists, international diplomats, admired designers, noted Realtors, and acclaimed chefs are among the guests who have enjoyed Carolyn Klemm’s Northwest Corner hospitality. Renaissance woman Carolyn Klemm came to Connecticut via London, Canada, New York City and Westchester. After previous careers running hair-accessories boutiques at Saks and Bergdorf Goodman, she married, and a stint at selling cars led her to real estate. Now widowed, she and her two sons list some of the finest homes in the Litchfield area. Entertaining friends and clients at her homes in Washington Depot and Palm Beach is a frequent pastime. Her selfpublished cookbook enables guests to duplicate favorite dishes she serves. Here, the prominent Realtor shares some of her ideas and tips for entertaining. klemmrealestate.com.

What dishes do you try to avoid? Shellfish or anything too spicy or exotic. What is the ideal dinner size? The perfect size is 10—five couples—at a round table so everybody’s at the head. What is the trick of an ideal guest list? I love putting people together who don’t know each other or who should know each other—those who have something in common with someone they don’t know. So many people tell me they met their best friend at my dinner—or they went into business with someone they would never have met except at my table. Why is seating important? I always use place cards, even cut up 3-by-5 cards with a felt pen. It shows some thought, that I’ve planned in advance. And I never seat a husband and wife together—they see each other all the time. How important is the décor? It sets the mood. When you’re entertaining, you want it to feel special. You can pull things from your home and make it look attractive. I collect Majolica. Use fruits and vegetables if you don’t want to buy flowers or pick them from the garden. Candlelight is always a lovely touch. When do you give out favors? On special occasions—an anniversary, birthday, graduation. You want to keep it festive with things for the table, maybe balloons. Also, it’s essential to have wonderful music. People don’t laugh enough, try to make things happy and fun to make people laugh. What makes a bad guest? Bringing up religion or politics; it’s always a dead end.

88

ctc&g cottagesgardens.com april 2022

What is the ideal hostess gift? Anything homemade, maybe a cake or banana bread. I’ve had people bring me a small painting or even a pet rock they painted my name on. Somebody carved me a doorstop out of wood. I don’t expect anything, but if they bring me something unique or special that means everything. What’s unique about entertaining in Connecticut? It’s more rural and relaxed. You can wear blue jeans and don’t have to dress up. In summer, we do very low-key dinners— fried chicken, coleslaw, wonderful vegetable salads. What was your biggest entertaining disaster? The Thanksgiving when our German Shorthaired Pointer, Sebastian, ate all the desserts—three pumpkin and three pecan pies! What’s an essential adjunct to the menu? I always have a joke ready. There’s a part of the evening when conversation becomes quiet. That’s when it’s nice to have a little pickerupper, something fresh, so I love telling a fun joke. You say neighbors writer Candace Bushnell and actress Christine Baranski are among favorite guests. Who else would you invite to an ideal dinner party? Queen Elizabeth because I was born in Britain, and my mother held a tea with cucumber sandwiches for the coronation. Bernard Arnault since I’m a Francophile; and Martha Stewart; I’ve always admired her career. —Sharon King Hoge

Table Talk Favorite figurines used in Klemm’s table setting, her Culinary Collection and tomato-pie recipe.

TOMATO PIE

Prepared pastry shell ⅓ cup Dijon mustard 1 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced 8 to 10 tomato slices Small amount basil 2 tsp olive oil

Set oven to 400°. Line a 12-inch pie plate with pastry shell. Cover bottom of pastry with mustard. Arrange mozzarella slices on mustard. Arrange tomato slices in a circle on top. Add basil over tomatoes; drizzle olive oil on top. Bake for 40 minutes. Let rest 15 minutes, then serve.

RICHARD GRAULICH

What is your go-to menu? So many people have dietary restrictions that I like to have choices when I entertain. For starters, a tomato pie and a Caesar salad. Then, either short ribs or osso buco—and I usually do a chicken and lots of vegetables and pasta. You have to keep the food choices simple, and luckily, I love to cook.
