Residence Redux
AUSTIN PATTERSON DISSTON
are hot topics for governors across the country. I have a different concern—where they live. In the 1980s, I embarked on a project at 138 Eagle Street in Albany. With the help of interior designer Stanley Hura, we refreshed a suite of rooms for Governor Mario Cuomo. Fast forward to this past February. ■ On a bright and snowy afternoon, I pulled up in front of 990 Prospect Avenue in Hartford, the new home of our new governor and his wife—Dannel and Cathy Malloy. As I stared at this beautiful Georgian Revival house, I knew I couldn’t wait to go inside. I walked from room to room, taking in the beautiful moldings of these wonderfully proportioned rooms. It was powerful to stand in such an iconic house. But as much as I loved the architecture, most of the furnishings in these rooms needed help. Poor furniture placement made most of the rooms uncomfortable for large gatherings or an intimate dinner with friends. In essence, the rooms felt cold and had very little personality. I knew the house deserved better; I knew the governor and his wife deserved better; I knew the people of Connecticut deserved better. ■ Having worked on public and historic houses that cost nothing to taxpayers gave me the insight on how to polish this diamond in the rough. I knew that by bringing many, many players into the mix, our state could have an official residence that would showcase the great talent here. Interior designers chose rooms; generous donations of goods and services from manufacturers, artisans, workrooms, retailers, painters, carpenters, plumbers and electricians flowed forth. Work began: Sketches were submitted, colors chosen, fabrics stitched, walls painted. In the end, a magnificent house became a home. ■ I would like to thank the Governor’s Residence Conservancy that owns and operates the mansion and property for its support. In addition, I am grateful for the enthusiasm and genuine interest of Governor and Mrs. Malloy whose collective vision for the public spaces in the Residence was that of a younger, modern family in a traditional home. If it were not for the staff at the Residence working under the loving eye of Executive Director Carol O’Shea, none of this would have been possible, especially not in six months. I am so proud to share this iconic house with all of you. I am sure you will take as much pride as I do in the results. It truly is the People’s House: your house. Now go visit.

The Pride of CT As Governor Malloy addressed the assembled group in the foyer of the Governor’s Residence on Prospect Avenue in Hartford, I was struck by the audience’s expressions. The governor was saying that he and his wife, Cathy, were genuinely appreciative of the monumental effort that had been made by Connecticut’s design community under the direction of Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Editorial Director D.J. Carey to redecorate the 17 public rooms in the Residence, pool house and guest cottage. ■ And the home was splendid indeed. Fit for a Governor. Fit for the next Governor and fit for the people of Connecticut. We called it the People’s Project, as the building is not only a home for the First Family, but also a focal point and meeting place for countless nonprofit groups, businesses and charities. ■ The listening group was made up of Connecticut’s premier designers, manufacturers and retailers who had, for months, busied themselves making someone else’s home fabulous. All of them contributed their products and services at no charge. ■ By any measure their contributions were significant and the expressions on their faces showed pleasure and genuine pride. Even in these unsettled times, they had found the strength and resources to contribute in a meaningful way to their community. ■ Take some time this holiday season to visit the Residence and see for yourself the results of this wonderful collaboration.

nd so begins the season when we celebrate the great indoors—fires in the hearth, dinner preparations fragrancing the kitchen, guests gathering around the table. This month, Connecticut Realtors and sellers are busily burnishing interiors to give off that “good life” glow. Sure, curb appeal still matters, but prospective buyers’ first real impression is less likely to strike during the brisk walk from the car and more likely to happen as they walk through the front door. Consider this column a virtual celebration of six of Connecticut’s finest “for sale” interiors. Come on in! We hope you’ll like one of them enough to stay for a long, long while.

This Shingle-style compound seems tailor-made for house parties that last all weekend. There are plenty of places to put up guests, starting with the charming, two-bedroom guest cottage clad in weathered barn siding. The circa-1850 main house has six bedrooms and five bathrooms (plus one half bathroom) and loads of space to entertain, including a large
kitchen, a family room with a stone fireplace and a living room with exposed beams and views onto the terrace. And then there is the 50-acre property that ensures both privacy and a great first impression: The approach to the home features a long, tree-lined drive ending in a front courtyard. The grounds also offer a pool and pergola, tennis courts, a large pond, waterfalls and a barn. fit for a King Called Windsor House, this $3,950,000 listing features a circa1803 Federal-style home on 8.7-acre grounds straddling the towns of New Canaan and Wilton. It offers seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, plus three half bathrooms. Wendy Brainard of William Raveis in New Canaan (203-966-3555) shares the listing with Julie Carney of William Raveis in Wilton (203-451-9966).
line, this Federal-style Silvermine estate was built around 1803 and has been entirely renovated, from its plush media room to its two-bedroom guest cottage. While “Windsor” is a hard name to live up to, the 15-room home looks pretty royal to us: It’s got seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms (plus three half bathrooms) and a pretty conservatory that opens onto the 8.7-acre property with gardens, a circular pool and a pool house. It’s co-listed with Wendy Brainard of William Raveis in New Canaan and Julie Carney of William Raveis in Wilton. 203-966-3555 and 203-451-9966. West Hartford tudor $2.9 million
Here’s a terrific circa-1929 Tudor that boasts 8,624 square feet of beautifully renovated interiors. Its owners had been living in England where they renovated a grand country home. When they moved back to the U.S., they looked to bring an English sensibility to their new house, from the formal dining room with purple-papered walls to the lovely garden room with its vintage tile floors and a fountain. The new kitchen—once three separate rooms—sets up well for entertaining with a restaurant-quality stove, two sinks, two dishwashers and the original butler’s pantry. There’s also a home theater and wood-paneled library/office with a fireplace. In all, it offers seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms (plus four half bathrooms), including a master suite with vaulted ceilings, a private dressing room and a fireplace. The brick-andhalf-timber home sits on one landscaped acre and is listed with Susie Hatch of William Raveis in West Hartford. 860-841-0866. Weston antique $2,399,000

Our favorite part of this circa-1795 property is its spectacular terrace with a massive fireplace and stone chimney, perfect for entertaining even as the days grow colder. We also love the pretty pool and cabana and the immaculate four-stall horse barn. Inside, the Colonial has been renovated and expanded to give its 4,892-square-foot interiors a light and open floor plan—not often the case with antiques—while retaining the exposed, weathered beams. It offers four bedrooms, four bathrooms and four fireplaces. Andrew Whiteley of Fite Shavell & Associates has the listing. 203-258-1595.

Designs & Details: Spotlight on some of the companies behind The People’s Project
The Georgian Revival-style Residence of the Connecticut Governor
in Hartford is more than 100 years old. Known as “the people’s house,” the Residence is toured every year by thousands of visitors and is the site for events hosted by not-for-profit organizations.
PHOTO BY CLAIRE INGRAM; FABRIC COURTESY OF SCHUMACHER
In order to commemorate and preserve the home’s historic value, the Governor’s Residence Conservancy (a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1991), worked with a special design team, organized and led by Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, to achieve a meaningful transformation of the Residence. The CTC&G design team helped renew and refurbish some of the interior public spaces of the Residence, along with the guest cottage and pool house. Many area designers, companies and national manufacturers generously donated products, time and labor—efforts that will certainly enhance the Residence and leave a lasting impression for years to come. Here is an inside look at some of the contributing companies.

( elizabeth eakins ) Elizabeth Eakins donated four extraordinary rugs from her Teff collection for use in the study, living room and hall of the guest cottage. They were chosen for their classic and simple patterns, with bright colors to give them a modern twist. Like all of Eakins’ rugs and fabrics, Teff collection rugs are handwoven from natural fibers; they’re a wonderful combination of wool and linen, so they are as sturdy as they are beautiful. Their chunky and complex weave structures and vibrancy of colors made them a subtle, yet spectacular choice. Elizabeth Eakins began weaving rugs in 1978 and today the company’s home is a light-filled 22,000-square-foot studio in Norwalk, Connecticut. A lovely solution for any room in the house, these gorgeous rugs are meant for living. ( elizabetheakins.com )

n celebration of the Residence’s 100th anniversary,
Connecticut Cottages & Gardens and the Governor’s Residence Conservancy, a private nonprofit group, hand-picked a team of world-class designers—all with ties to the Nutmeg State—to preserve and refresh its public areas, including the pool house and guest cottage. The stunning transformations on the pages that follow are a real breath of fresh air; they give the Residence just the touches needed to restore it to its former glory. Each room not only befits a state’s chief executive and his family, but also sets a welcoming tone for all who cross the home’s esteemed threshold. Call it a page taken straight from the Gettysburg Address: “Of the People, By the People, For the People ...” Every stitch of upholstery, every brush of paint, every custom piece of furniture— everything that didn’t already belong to the Conservancy—was supplied in kind by Connecticut companies, contractors, decorative painters, upholsterers and more, in the hope of turning the Residence into a respite enjoyed not only by the Governor, First Lady and their children, but by the general public, too. Designed by Boston-based architectural firm Andrews, Jacques & Rantoul for Hartford industrialist and physician George C.F. Williams, construction on the Residence broke ground in 1909. Situated on the corner of Prospect and Asylum avenues, and serving as the boundary between Hartford and West Hartford, this substantial brick home was built in the popular Georgian Revival style, with a hip roof, single-bay porch, rectangular plan and staunchly symmetrical facade, all typical of the day and the region. In 1943, the handsome property at 990 Prospect Avenue, a mere three miles from the Capitol building, was acquired to house Connecticut’s first family, and to host official functions. Wartime goings-on and the building’s location and design were said to offset a more open-door policy, and caused the Residence, shrouded by tall trees and set back 200 feet from passing traffic, to remain largely a private building. Since that time, however, the Residence has opened itself to guided public tours and social functions for state residents. While it now boasts 15,000 square feet of living space, a pool, 19 rooms and 9 fireplaces on a pared-down four acres, the work of preserving the history of the home has been an ongoing process undertaken by the Conservancy. While the Residence has undergone several remodels (the first in September 1945, and most recently in 1992), arguably no couple has been more excited about updates than Governor Dannel P. Malloy and First Lady Cathy Malloy. “We were surprised by how many people hadn’t had access to this house, and we were interested in making it more inclusive,” says Mrs. Malloy. “Our ultimate goal is to open the property to the public and add it to the list of historic venues in Hartford.” Since work on this house began, 100-plus artists have contributed to the property. “We feel it’s a great beginning to getting people engaged in that effort,” she adds.

ust off the foyer—between the dining and living rooms—is the reception area, where Woodbridge native Jamie Drake was given carte blanche. His first impression? “The space was downbeat—somber. It certainly didn’t reflect the wonderful, gregarious personalities of the Malloys,” he laughs. The challenges Drake faced lay not only in fusing the First Couple’s preferences with his natural penchant for adventurousness, but in “making notions of traditional design feel fresh and young,” explains Drake. Plus, choices had to be made with an eye on longevity—it’s not every year the Residence gets a worldclass makeover. Because his room had to work with the color schemes of the adjoining spaces, “I needed something pivotal,” says Drake, “a neutral palette, but one with strength and personality.” He painted the walls an elegant platinum (“indeed, a neutral—but with crispness,” Drake says) and brought in bold coral, red and burgundy via silk-cut velvet upholstery on the iron benches, the striped-satin curtain fabric, and the fringed bullion trim on the traditional French table’s skirt. A bright-coral pencil stripe within the crown molding encircles the room, bringing the eye upward, where a softer wash of pink brightens the ceiling. “It’s one of the smallest details, but it’s perhaps the most striking effect,” says Drake.

usan Bednar Long rose to the challenge of resurrecting the Residence’s living room. Disjointed and uncomfortable, “like a tired hotel lobby that was once grand, the room had lost nearly all of its charm over time,” she says. A self-proclaimed “modern traditionalist,” the Greenwichbased designer, who was born and raised in Connecticut, took color cues from the legendary decorator Bill Blass’s New Preston home. “I used masculine colors, such as charcoal, brown, camel and cream and hints of blue,” she says, “to emphasize the room’s good bones, like the ornate moldings and the fireplace.” The deep-chocolate contrast wall and graphic lines that continue along baseboards and above doorways—plus the gray detail around the

ceiling perimeter—create a modern variance that offsets the busy-ness of the traditional millwork and highlights previously overshadowed antiques. “Since the room is used for official state gatherings, ease of flow into the sunroom and an open, inviting plan were important to the Malloys,” says Bednar Long. Wingback chairs and a Chippendale secretary have moved to the opposing wall for counterbalance. A reupholstered loveseat, along with two custom-made mohair club chairs, a custom ottoman and a new rug now form a more intimate arrangement in front of the hearth. The result? “Though dignified, the room has an undeniable simplicity. It has a warmth and classicism that makes everyone feel well received,” says Bednar Long.

T
he first designers’ meeting took place in the airy sunroom, which abuts the living room and library. “I was instantly taken by its amazing light, and secretly decided it was the room I wanted,” says Philip Gorrivan, who spends weekends at his home in Washington. Having elements of formality (for entertaining) and coziness (for familial downtime), Gorrivan saw this as the most welcoming room in the Residence, “but its paint colors were wrong and the floor plan wasn’t optimized.” Capitalizing on the natural light flooding the room (there are three walls of windows), he used cooler grays, greens, purples and aqua versus warmer tones, “because they pull in colors from the garden and each looks beautiful in bright light.” The ceiling was painted a soft, pale lavender. Then, decorative painter Dean Barger applied a silvery glaze, which “gives the room an unexpected facet of youthfulness and excitement,” he explains. To improve the floor plan, Gorrivan brought in extra furniture to create three areas: a centralized living room setup; a more intimate den-like arrangement; and a dining area with an upholstered window seat and a simple Parsons table. Clean-lined furniture—much in the style of Jean-Michel Frank—covered in textural fabrics radiates comfort. The designer also incorporated the Malloys’ own 18th-century armoire, which is filled with ceramics from their personal collection. “I like to decorate rooms that are a careful balance of the past and the way we live now,” notes Gorrivan.

n the library, where the Governor holds informal work meetings, the Malloys and their three sons also like to relax in front of the TV, “so, it couldn’t be too austere or forbidding,” says Paula Perlini. The designer, who enjoys a country home in Lyme, is no stranger to significant structures. She worked for decorator Mark Hampton on Blair House, the residence for the President’s guests during the first Bush administration, and helped restore New York City’s Gracie Mansion. “Being involved with historical buildings has always lit my fire,” says Perlini. And attention to the library’s gorgeous fireplace was, coincidentally, her first order of business. It clearly hadn’t commanded the respect it deserved. Its painted-brick firebox and hearth and glass-panel enclosure, “were completely inappropriate,” she says. Perlini removed the brick, replacing it with terra-cotta tile in a Jessinian Field pattern mirroring the stucco veneziano in damask plaster on the opposing wall, and laid a rich, marble hearth in a rusty red hue. Perlini used a bright creamy white on ceilings, moldings and woodwork, thus creating a striking contrast with the brushes of terra cotta (“a color that gives everyone’s skin a gorgeous glow,” she says). The designer was able to source a desk from the Residence’s third-floor library, and placed it beside the furthest window, providing the Governor with a tranquil view of the landscape through the adjoining sunroom while at work. 11.2011

F
or one-time Farmington resident and Wadsworth Atheneum docent Sandra Morgan, renewing the dining room felt like going home again. Also in the Greenwich designer’s hindsight was her former home. Dated 1790, it underwent continual renovations. Morgan was first struck by how old the Residence’s dining room felt. “There was a tone of serious formality, as if you were standing in a museum. The furniture was dark, the walls above the chair rail were heavy—even the artwork was somber,” she says. “I wanted to give it an energy that would lock it into history, yet marry it to the present day.” The bamboo-trellis wall covering was vital in the room’s transformation. Inspired by Claude Monet’s yellowand-blue dining room in Giverny, as well as Thomas Jefferson’s bright yellow dining parlor at Monticello, Morgan wanted to “bring in the feeling of sunlight, joy and optimism that yellow is known for.” As for the designer’s decision to cover the ceiling, too, in a graphic print? “I had to,” she says. “It wouldn’t have been believable to put paint up there—regardless of the color.” Now, with the 1940s table bedecked with luxe flatware and linens, “the room exudes life—even though the guests haven’t arrived,” says Morgan.

n years past, guests looking to freshen up in the ladies’ room were in for a wait. Because the lavatory and powder areas were combined, some guests primped while others queued. And antiquated elements in both the men’s and ladies’ rooms (a fabric-covered ceiling in the ladies,’ as well as dark, light-absorbing wallpaper in the men’s) made both bathrooms feel cut off, and ill matched to the main Residence. Klaff’s, Inc. Chairman and CEO Joe Passero and design director Nick Geragi developed a creative solution. An adjacent coat closet gave way to an additional sink, a glazed-maple vanity-as-makeup-area and a full-length triptych mirror. “All were inspired by the elegance found in the lounge of a fabulous Broadway theater,” says Passero. In the men’s room, nondescript light fixtures were replaced with oversized polished-nickel lanterns, and a custombuilt mahogany vanity was topped with white Carrara marble. “Now, as soon as you step inside either space, you realize, ‘I’m inside the Governor’s mansion.’ Each feels perfectly in tune with the rest of the home’s decor,” says Geragi. Elegant and Inviting Stealing space from a neighboring coat closet provided the designers with the necessary footage to create a glamorous ladies’ room. POOL HOUSE
Tricia Izzo, Carolyn Kron Shelter Interiors, LLC
F
or Milford natives Tricia Izzo and Carolyn Kron, walking into the pool house was like stepping back into 1985—around the time when it was built. “Next to the gorgeous pool, we were shocked to see bland, minimal finishes,” says Kron. In the two separate spaces—a beverage area and a bathroom—the women were met with exposed plumbing and wires (walls weren’t Sheetrocked). Another challenge: Since it’s the only ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)-compliant facility on the property, it had to remain so for public accessibility purposes. “That nixed our shower idea,” says Kron. The designers also lost six inches in building out the beverage area wall. With electrical work hidden, the glass-tile backsplash shines without interference. Norwalk-based NuKitchens also created a cohesive, solid wall of cabinetry that meets flush with the ceiling (thus giving the illusion of increased height) and maximizes storage potential. And Izzo and Kron thoughtfully designed a bathroom that’s devoid of the pitfalls (too utilitarian, too bulky) commonly associated with the ADA-compliancy concept. “It also needed a shot of glamour,” adds Izzo. “Walking around the property, we pictured stars like Rita Hayworth and Clark Gable lounging poolside. That ignited our 1940s getaway theme.” They started with black and white, then brought in aqua and green in the woodwork, cabinetry and wall coverings. “Now, it’s definitely more jewel box than shoe box,” Kron laughs.

Carey Karlan Last Detail Interior Design
D
arien resident Carey Karlan knew she’d feel right at home in the guest cottage. “I like cozy little spaces, but not Seven Dwarf-ish,” she says. Though charming, the kitchen and dining room were a bit too snug for ample flow. For starters, a damaged linoleum floor, inefficient appliances and bulky cabinetry proved “a cosmetic facelift wouldn’t have been enough for the kitchen,” says Karlan. So she had to start from scratch. Partnering with NuKitchens, she removed an unnecessary closet and the door to the dining room. Open shelving replaced her original plan for upper cabinets, to “make the kitchen seem larger and more convivial,” Karlan notes. A seamless cooktop, stainless steel range hood, refrigerator drawers and textured-vinyl wallpaper are contemporary touches. While the dining room acted as the cottage’s main conduit (it has a window, a door, a hallway opening and a second-floor staircase), it had no real connection to the rest of the rooms. “The floor plan was almost predetermined. It was more about relating to the kitchen, changing colors and adding timeless elements,” says the designer. Case in point: Shaker-style dining chairs and the interior of the preexisting hutch-cum-practical buffet are pear-green to echo the kitchen’s verdant ceiling. Size Matters (left) Currey & Company’s oversized Beesthorpe lantern gives the illusion of more space above the Maine Cottage trestle table and chairs and Fovama rug. ranted full authority over the living room and the study, plus the hallway and diminutive powder room, Westport designer Catherine Cleare’s first thought was “to get rid of every piece of furniture,” in order to make everything fresh and current. As it turns out, she didn’t need to. “I recycled every piece, actually.” Her success hinged on a trip into the basement of the Residence. “It was a goldmine of sofas and chairs. If you can sit on it, that’s where it came from,” says Cleare. The living room was a mishmash of traditional tables that Cleare painted high-gloss white “to create visual continuity,” she explains. She toned down the scheme with sea-glass turquoise and

citrus greens, and created two distinct seating arrangements. But the crowning jewel of her subterranean excursion was the Chinese model junk she scored. “When I spotted it high up in a dusty corner, I couldn’t believe my luck,” she laughs. In the neighboring study, wooden paneling with a worn-out dark finish that Cleare found suffocating in such small quarters was painted a snappy bright green. And the old-fashioned “Pepto-pink” powder room lacked even the most basic amenities: “There wasn’t a place for soap or hand towels,” Cleare says. U
pstairs, designers Polly Denham, who resides in Stamford, and Glenda Moralee, of New Canaan, knew the master quarters would accommodate a range of guests—from VIPs to friends and family—so the space had to have broad appeal and “couldn’t date itself in a couple years,” says Denham. Since it was nearly a blank slate—save for a queen bed, two end tables and a lone mattress within the alcove—they easily developed a plan. “We aimed for hotel-suite sophistication,” says Moralee. A sofa and coffee table form a place to chat, while the alcove’s arched window perfectly frames a desirable workspace. “And because the room has masses of natural light, rich brown looks so beautiful and elegant on the walls,” adds Denham. To unify the cottage’s second level (stairway included) the designers painted the entire floor a soft, creamy beige. In the smaller bedroom, walls are the same color as the floor, and inspired, almost trompe l’oeil painted headboards above each bed beget an upholstered-fabric look that’s even more convincing with the plush, oversized bolsters. In the bathroom, the designers replaced bronze-tone fittings with shiny chrome, kept the existing (and charming) clawfoot bathtub, replaced the toilet and sink, and added supplementary lighting via a double-arm fixture.

or an authentic “Westward Ho” experience, would-be wranglers can visit the Wildcatter Ranch Resort & Spa. Nestled in North Texas Hill Country, the resort’s locale was the setting for Lonesome Dove and for numerous classic John Wayne Westerns. A two-hour drive from the Dallas airport, the 1,500-acre spread is operated by the great-grandchildren of original settlers. Sixteen guest cabins perched high on a bluff overlooking the Brazos river valley feature giant wood-frame beds and central stone fireplaces. Each unit’s name honors a different aspect of the colorful frontier and wildcatter oil-well history. Photographs on the walls of my “Warren Wagon Train” cabin show the site of that expedition’s ill-fated ambush and its seven martyred pioneer teamsters. Activities begin early when a tractor-pulled covered wagon takes guests to feed Longhorn cattle that are tame enough to accept tubes of cottonseed by hand. ATV tours or wrangler-escorted horseback trail rides explore the terrain. There are trails for hiking and biking, plus there’s fishing and canoeing on Connor Creek. Marksmen can try archery, skeet shooting or paintball in the field of haystacks. An infinity pool and hot tub overlook the cactus landscape, and the Sage spa offers a full menu of treatments. Just 10 minutes from the front gate, the town of Graham retains Old World charm with storefronts surrounding a central square. A walking tour passes the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center and the “westernRomanesque”-style Graham Memorial Auditorium, where local thespians present hometown productions of Broadway shows. Popular dining spots include Dinner Bell, Clayton’s and Mi Familia. But the highlight is definitely “Bob the Cook” Bratcher’s Western cuisine

at the Wildcatter Steakhouse, featuring mouthwatering steaks and other ranch favorites. Each inch-thick, perfectly marbled tenderloin is carved by hand, rubbed with cinnamon, thyme, garlic and oregano, and grilled over mesquite. “Mustang Salad” is a popular side, while banana pudding flavored with Mexican vanilla is a great dessert. Local Texas varietal wines (or beers from the Blowout Saloon) enhance the courses. The Steakhouse serves a special Thanksgiving menu, but no worries: Visitors can work off all those calories on the Wildcatter Ranch’s many scenic trails.

Wrong. Our organic mattresses, built with the finest organic materials in the world, cost no more than any mattress you’d buy from any big mattress store. The Naturepedic Organic Cotton Deluxe mattress starts at $699 Our #1 selling kid’s mattress
The big difference is this. While your typical mattress contains: polyurethane, stain-resistant and flame-retardant chemicals, cotton grown with pesticides and latex made from petroleum ... an organic mattress contains none. Zero.

How can YOU get the best project for your money? DInIng rooM
Sandra Morgan
Due diligence and hiring experts in the field is the simple answer. A designer or architect will develop the space using these criteria: • does the design work with existing aesthetics, • do the interior spaces flow one into another, • does the traffic flow well from the garage to the mud room to the kitchen and so on, • does the kitchen and butler’s pantry support the dining room, which then flows to other living areas, • does the lighting, and HVAC work effectively in all the new areas, • selection of a builder who respects what the architect, designer and homeowner have developed. If the quality of one part is compromised, the whole suffers, both in time and costs. Our experience has proven that the least expensive route is never the most cost effective in the long run.

People’s Project Designers What did you love about your space and how did you use it in your design? Catherine Cleare “The charming brick guest cottage reminds me of Hansel and Gretel. You expect to smell brownies baking in the oven upon arrival. I loved rummaging through the basement of the mansion, looking for hidden treasures that just needed a little TLC. All of the chairs and sofas have been reupholstered and all of the tables were painted white to create continuity. The rooms look homey, comfortable and beckon you to put your feet up.”
appear as if it were awaiting a Hollywood starlet, so we went a little glamorous.”
the beautiful millwork in the living room. I wanted to highlight the historical significance of that element in a fresh, modern way.”
Carey Karlan “I love the charm of cottages. I wanted to maintain the sense of a cottage nestled in the forest—but avoid the cutesy Seven Dwarfs stereotype! To achieve this, we mixed it up: a contemporary striped rug, brightly painted chairs, updated appliances and a vinyl bamboo paper in the kitchen contrasting with an old-fashioned window treatment, antique flooring and a repainted hutch.”
Sandra Morgan “I love the gracious scale of the dining room with its high ceiling, paneled fireplace and tall recessed windows. I highlighted the windows by installing yellow and white striped silk panels at ceiling height and a pair of custom trellis pedestals made for two large ferns in blue and white cachepots. The result is fresh and elegant.”
Susan Bednar Long “I loved seeing how the crisp chocolate and white paint on the fireplace wall underscored
