Without Marco, it wouldn’t be Clarke.
Spend an hour at a Clarke Showroom and one thing is clear: your time with a Clarke Consultant is the most valuable part of your kitchen journey. While they’re not designers, these are the people designers call on when it comes to appliance recommendations. You won’t buy anything at Clarke, so there’s simply no pressure. What you can do is compare more Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove models than anywhere in New England. And explore a living portfolio of kitchens created by the region’s top designers. You’ll leave inspired with new knowledge to make your appliance selections with confidence.

THE CONNECTICUT DESIGN GUIDE 2022
LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
CONNECTIVIT Y our entire staff reconnected with many of the design professionals in our state. And it felt so good. After all, due to the pandemic, many of us are still working from home, separated from our colleagues. We discovered what we always knew to be true: It is important to be able to connect with other people, and working from home made it difficult for all of us. The best ideas often come out of collaborations and discussions, which were at a minimum this past year. While creating the different chapters in the Design Guide, our emails and calls to designers, builders, architects and smart-home installers gave us new insights and hope. Most professionals told us that business is booming, and that the design industry is going strong. The process of creating this guide became very interactive, and we loved it. But the editors are not the only benefactors of these conversations—you, the reader, are too! This guide will give you insights into designing and building your dream house; how to decorate it; how to create spaces that are functional and relaxing; and lastly how to create outdoor spaces that you crave. Connecting and reconnecting. It’s what we do. After all, this is Connecticut! —The Editors of CTC&G

THE PAPER CHASE AS WE ARE ALL BEMOANING THE SUPPLY CHAIN SHORTAGES OF
furniture—and ordering a sofa comes with a delivery time frame of six months—the shortage of magazine paper and printing has also reached critical proportions. One of the biggest printers in our industry has announced 15- to 25-percent cost increases, and another has announced it will only be able to fulfill 75 percent of its workload—all due to shortages and rising costs for paper, ink, freight and labor. Keeping this in mind, we had to ensure that this 2022 Connecticut Design Guide would be printed. With the encouragement of our printer, we had to hunt for alternative paper as this annual issue requires special paper and cover stock. Happily, we were able to find it, and here it is now! It’s a much sought-after resource for design professionals and homeowners in Connecticut and is chock-full of ideas and resources for those who are building, designing, landscaping and decorating homes. We have also includes the exclusive “List” of design professionals whose projects have been published in the pages of CTC&G during the past year. The digital edition is available on issuu.com, and additional print copies can be purchased online at cottagesgardens.com. Enjoy!

OPEN PLAN HERE TO STAY OR GONE WITH NEW WFH REQUIREMENTS? “Space is no longer being defined by how it photographs but by the experience it gives us. Clients with existing open-concept floor plans have sought us out to create privacy when desired, yet connection for coming together. Allowing for comfort in spaces to nurture us and control noise are important elements.”—Nancy A. Lovas WE ASK THE

“I HAVE FOUND THAT THE TREND IS MOVING BACK TOWARD HAVING PRIVATE SPACES IN A HOUSE. WATERFRONT IS STILL FOCUSED ON THE OPEN PLAN, BUT EVEN THOSE WILL HAVE A SMALL DEN OR COZY ROOM TO RETREAT TO.” —Robert A. Cardello
“A second home office is now a standard request; however, the most interesting phenomenon we have observed is that playrooms are no longer just for children. We often incorporate a space for Ping-Pong, pool, shuffleboard and cards into our home designs. These play areas are often combined with wet bars and TV-watching areas to make spaces for everyone to relax and decompress.”—Susan Alisberg “Rather than having completely open interiors, we find it makes sense to create a series of interconnected rooms with oversized doorways. For a recent rustic country home, the kitchen was located centrally with large sliding barn doors to the adjacent family room and living room, allowing those rooms to be used for study or work when needed.”—Charles Haver and Stewart Skolnick
“We see an increased focus on separate home office and gym spaces. In one recent gut renovation, we were asked to create a home office that has a small separate area for a home gym, and this space can additionally be used as a guest suite as it has an en-suite bathroom. This multipurpose space is quite remote from the open living/dining/kitchen area—as well as the primary bedroom suite—so there is a natural separation between work-life and home-life functions.”—Scott Springer
“FOR REASONS OF SPACE AND LIGHT, THE OPEN PLAN IS HERE TO STAY. BUT HOMEOWNERS ARE PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO ATTENDANT SPACES—AND ALSO PIECES OF SPACE WITHIN THE OPEN PLAN—IN ORDER TO MAKE THINGS REALLY DO THE HEAVY LIFTING OF A FULL-TIME LIVE/ WORK ENVIRONMENT. HOWEVER, ARCHITECTURE DOESN’T HAVE TO SOLVE EVERYTHING; TECHNOLOGY (E.G. EARBUDS) CAN STEP IN TOO.”
—Christopher Arelt

THE CONNECTICUT DESIGN GUIDE 2022
“While the open concept is still present in the kitchen/ family room areas, I’ve seen a large demand in the last year for a separate den or adult lounge that is on the opposite side of the house. Parents want a quiet, intimate space to get away while the kids are in the family room watching TV or hanging out.”—Tanner White
“ASPECTS OF THE ‘OPEN FLOOR-PLAN CONCEPT’ WILL ALWAYS BE WITH US. KITCHENS THAT OPEN TO BOTH BREAKFAST AND FAMILY ROOM AREAS ARE HERE TO STAY. THE PANDEMIC FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGED HOW AND WHERE WE WORK, AS WELL AS OUR FAMILY STRUCTURE. THE COMPLETELY OPEN PLAN LOOKS BEAUTIFUL, BUT OFTEN DOES NOT REFLECT THE WAY FAMILIES LIVE, WORK AND PLAY WITHIN A HOME. THE NEED FOR ACOUSTIC AND VISUAL SEPARATION IN OUR HOMES HAS GONE UP DRAMATICALLY. CELLULAR SPACES DEVOTED TO WORK, STUDY, QUIET OR PEACE ARE NOW REGULAR STAPLES OF HOME DESIGN, AND POCKET DOORS ARE BACK IN FASHION!”—Arthur C. Hanlon
“TODAY’S PLANS ARE GENERALLY MORE OPEN THAN TRADITIONAL HOUSES OF A GENERATION OR TWO AGO, BUT WITH MANY ROOMS THAT CAN BE CLOSED OFF WHEN MORE PRIVACY IS DESIRED.”—Charles Hilton “The one programmatic change in second homes is the desire to have working office space. Whereas most people do not believe that remote working is a sustainable model (people need to be mentored and need to have conversations with coworkers that simply don’t happen on a Zoom), the experiences over the past year have proven that someone may take two weeks off—one shutting down from the office, but the other spending the week remotely and still being productive. Clients are looking to set their vacation homes up with the ability to extend their time away from the office. Better to work on the Vineyard than midtown Manhattan!” —Christopher Pagliaro

LONG LEAD TIMES!
“Shortages in materials and products are across the board, so we are using our critical path timeline to help architects and clients make decisions sooner. We order early in the building process and store material/products so that they are on the job site when needed.”—Brian MacDonald
“WE ARE SEEING EXTENDED LEAD TIMES ON A VARIETY OF PRODUCTS FROM INSULATION TO PVC PIPING TO LIGHTING FIXTURES, AND UNCERTAINTY WITH LARGE CUSTOM ORDERS FROM ABROAD, SUCH AS STONE AND WINDOW PACKAGES. WE’VE BEEN COPING WITH DELAYS BY PLANNING AND ORDERING EARLIER IN THE PROJECT AND USING DOMESTIC SUPPLIERS WHEN POSSIBLE.”—Evan Cronly WE ASK THE

“WE ARE FEELING THE STAGGERED EFFECTS FROM DECREASES IN FACTORY PRODUCTION, SHUTDOWNS AND WEATHER DISRUPTIONS, AND MANY MATERIALS HAVE REMAINED SCARCE. WE’VE ESTABLISHED GOOD WORKING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE RIGHT VENDORS. WE'RE MODIFYING OUR FORECASTING PROCEDURES TO ANTICIPATE DELAYS IN BUILDING MATERIALS AND PLANNING ACCORDINGLY.”
—John Ruddy
“All building materials— appliances, windows, doors, plumbing fixtures—have longer turnaround times as inventory is extremely low. The price increases for lumber, marble and shipping have affected our clients’ budgets as well. We have been open with our clients about these increases in materials and delays. We have had to be creative and rework our construction schedules and subcontractors to keep projects moving along even when waiting on certain building materials. It has been more of a challenge on the back end: Customer satisfaction and moving them into their dream homes on schedule is paramount.”—Lucien Vita PHOTOGRAPH (OPPOSITE) BY: KEITH SCOTT MORTON AND ERIC RICHARDS (NOVEMBER 2020)

THE CONNECTICUT DESIGN GUIDE 2022
“The impact on supply chains has been challenging, but given we are a designbased firm, the lead times have worked to our advantage. We have been able to spend more quality time on the design aspect and worry less about construction deadlines.”
—Rebecca McKeown
“Windows, doors, plumbing fixtures and appliances have been most dramatically affected. We were seeing eight-week lead times on custom windows and doors; we are now planning for upwards of 16 to 20 weeks. Some appliance manufacturers are not even able to give us lead times as the materials to produce the products are not even available. In that case, we are working closely with our vendors to suggest alternative manufacturers for equal products. We have received advance notices from our trusted suppliers and have been able to preorder items.”—Chris Shea
“MY TEAM OF SUPPLIERS HAS KEPT ME INFORMED THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ANTICIPATE AND PRE-ORDER SOME MATERIALS. NEVERTHELESS, THE UNPRECEDENTED AND ONGOING RISE IN THE COST OF WOOD PRODUCTS, SIDING AND ROOFING MATERIALS HAS IMPACTED BUDGETS. TEAMWORK HAS RARELY BEEN MORE IMPORTANT. WE’VE ALL JOINED FORCES TO FIND INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS TO STAY ON SCHEDULE.”—Michele Rudolph
“It is imperative in this environment to think of all supplies and vendors to be in short supply. Even things that used to always be in ready stock may now have lead times of weeks or months. Electrical boxes, certain types of lumber, appliances, pool equipment, plumbing fixtures and virtually everything else can have spot or long-term shortages with no notice. We need to be on top of our game ordering everything as early as humanly possible in order to get the materials in our hands, even if we must store them at our cost. Far less expensive (and traumatic!) than having to wait for key items.”—Scott Hobbs
“We are strategically planning and making final decisions on materials early in the building process. This allows us to procure and have them available when needed, even if it means storing them for our clients. In some circumstances—if the lead times on the materials are going to seriously impact the project schedule—we've sought out alternative or equivalent products that can be purchased well in advance.”—Jack Baer
“Appliances and plumbing trims have been challenging. We ask our clients to prioritize their selections in these areas so we can order them early in the process. We also ask our clients to be flexible and have back-up options should the lead times be outside of the project timeline.”
—Tucker Kellogg

uilding your dream home at the start of the pandemic takes a dedicated team focused on proper planning. While Edgewater Development primarily focuses on new construction, this Sound Beach Avenue renovation in Old Greenwich was a special project they were excited to undertake. Wanting to preserve the history of their 1906 colonial farmhouse, Edgewater’s clients opted for an extensive remodel and 2,500 square foot addition. A sundrenched, 5,000 square foot, four floor, open concept home, with impressive master suite, bonus rooms and wrap around porch, this modern farmhouse is as functional as it is beautiful, with clients who are ecstatic with their new dream home. Working closely with clients to understand their design aesthetic and family needs, the Edgewater Development team not only builds top-quality custom luxury homes with the utmost professionalism, but also makes the process fun and manageable. Offering creative solutions with transparency to stay on time and budget, they are proud to bring more than 20 years of experience and quality to every project they undertake.

WHAT’S AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT FOR A
CLASSIC CONNECTICUT GARDEN? “Visual rhythm. The most captivating properties are not visible all at once, but reveal themselves as you move through various spaces leading you to a stunning view or special private space.”—Nancy King, Seventy Acres Landscape
Architecture & Design, seventyacres.com
“GARDENS IN CONNECTICUT CAN VARY IN STYLE, SIZE AND SETTING. BUT ONE COMMON ELEMENT IN OUR VERNACULAR IS STONE. IF YOU DON’T ALREADY HAVE A STONE WALL ON YOUR PROPERTY, YOU COULD EASILY MAKE A CASE TO ADD ONE.”—Rosalia Sanni, Rosalia Sanni Design, rosaliasanni.com
“CONSIDER THE ENTIRE YEAR WHEN DESIGNING. ADDING STRUCTURED PLANTINGS WILL MAKE OUR LONG WINTERS MORE INTERESTING!”—James Doyle, James Doyle Design Associates, jdda.com

THE CONNECTICUT DESIGN GUIDE 2022
TOP 5 TIPS FOR A “GREEN” GARDEN By carefully considering what you plant and how you tend your garden, you can support local wildlife, attract birds and butterflies, and benefit more of the ecosystem than you can see right in front of you. Here, Nature Conservancy (nature. org) conservation ecologist Dr. Deborah Landau shares her best tips for a garden that’s beautiful and beneficial.
1 NEW PROJECT?
Focus on native plants. Using flowers and plants that are native to your area will attract and support the butterflies and birds that have evolved to pollinate them. Your native plant society (ct-botanical-society.org) will have a list of what’s best. Look for native plants that flower at different times, so there will always be something available for pollinators. For instance, violets are great for early spring blooms, while asters will bloom in late summer. And, you can never go wrong with planting native species of milkweed, as migrating monarch butterflies rely on them.
FIRST STEPS 2
“Listen to your clients and deliver great design based on their programmatic needs. Give them more than they could ever have imagined!”—James Doyle,
James Doyle Design Associates, jdda.com
“THE FIRST THING I ALWAYS ASK IS ‘HOW DO YOU WANT TO USE YOUR LANDSCAPE AND WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH IT?’ CREATING THE PROGRAM AND WISH LIST TOGETHER IS A KEY FIRST STEP, AND THEN THINGS START TO CLICK INTO PLACE FROM THERE.”—Rosalia Sanni, Rosalia Sanni Design, rosaliasanni.com
“A clear wish list from our clients always drives the design program. Dreaming big in the master plan phase allows our clients to envision how they will use the property now and in the future. There is nothing better than holding a property space for a future wedding tent or designing a swimming pool sun shelf that will be perfect for future grandchildren.” —Brook Clark, Seventy Acres Landscape Architecture & Design, seventyacres.com
Plant a garden that’s any size—small to large. Even a tiny garden patch can help local pollinators like bees and butterflies, as well as a wide array of other insects like beetles and ants that are equally important to the ecosystem. Besides being a critical food source, your garden also supports these species at all stages of life, such as providing a place for them to lay eggs, hide from predators and survive the winter.
3
Tolerate some weeds and avoid chemicals. Dandelions provide an early spring pollinator meal before other flowers appear. By avoiding the use of chemicals like weed killers and pesticides, you’re protecting a host of others that might otherwise be killed by them, including beneficial fungi, bacteria, and a huge network of underground living things that help the plants growing above them.
4
Go a little wild. You can save yourself a lot of time and energy down the road by replacing a patch of your lawn with a native garden. Once it’s established, a native garden doesn’t need to be mowed, rarely needs to be watered, doesn’t require any chemical treatment, and will provide you with beautiful blooms and interesting visitors to enjoy.
5
Take it easy at season’s end. Leaving flowers, stalks and leaves in place provides shelter for helpful insects over the winter. Rake autumn leaves into piles or move them to one side of the yard, but then let them be. Fireflies overwinter as larvae in leaf litter: If you want them lighting up your yard next summer, don’t rake them away!

YOUR SMART HOME
GO BIG, GO IMMERSIVE By Walt Zerbe, senior director of technology and standards, CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association)
The high-end, dedicated home cinema has long been a luxury home goal, but as technology has progressed so have the ways we take in our favorite movies, shows and games. For homeowners today, the trends suggest shifting tastes and a move toward an immersive experience. Further, integrators skilled at delivering these experiences are seeing less demand for the theater-style space crafted for movies and static viewing, and swelling interest in robust media systems in multi-use environments. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GET IMMERSIVE? An immersive experience may not require as much of an investment as you might think, but it could take larger,
higher-quality video and audio technology than your existing media space includes. Above all, it requires you to rethink the space from a passive, movie-only setting and start thinking of the possibilities of what else can be immersive. The graphics and sound in gaming have reached epic, realistic heights. More live sporting events than ever are available in high dynamic range (HDR) video formats with killer audio. Streaming services have not only stepped up the amount and the quality of content deliverable anywhere (like first-run or near first-run movies at home), but they’ve also made major strides in image quality and distributed sound options. The recording industry has even risen to the occasion with immersive mixes of new and classic music COURTESTY OF CEDIA

emerging to melt your face. In other words, if you can dream of something to watch or listen to at home, it’s probably at your fingertips. So, why not elevate your experience by going immersive? We’re finding technology cooperating with this multi-channel, multioption approach as home entertainment has evolved beyond one stream of content, one bank of sound output, and one screen bringing it all to us. Right now, a multi-use, immersive space is in reach—and it can be done well—at nearly any budget. Find a CEDIA integrator near you at cedia.net. WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL MAKE IT IMMERSIVE? ●Audio hardware from headphones to earbuds to speaker separates can be immersive-enabled. ●Dolby Atmos audio systems take an object-based approach that mimics reality. ●DTS:X is another object-based audio format used frequently to create immersive soundscapes. ●HDR video format: once you see high dynamic range video, you can’t unsee high dynamic range video, and it’s a cornerstone of an immersive, multi-use entertainment space.
ABOUT WALT ZERBE
Walt Zerbe is CEDIA’s senior director of technology and standards and co-host of the CEDIA Podcast. He specializes in new technologies and standards creation, application and implementation. Prior to joining CEDIA, Zerbe spent more than 25 years working primarily in product development and product strategy for manufacturers focused on custom integration. He previously ran a custom integration business and applies that experience to the manufacturing and standards side of the industry to focus on product development and installation best practices.

KETRA LIGHTING Several years ago, the advent of LED lighting brought the promise of efficient, long-lasting lighting fixtures to the residential market. Ketra has taken the LED even further: creating fixtures and lamps that mimic natural light. Ketra lights can be set to follow the color and intensity of natural sunlight throughout the day—providing warm, soft light in the mornings and evenings, and matching the cooler, energizing hues when the sun is high in the sky. With the full spectrum of light available at every fixture, setting just the right lighting scene for living or entertaining is available at the touch of a button.
LUTRON ALISSE KEYPADS Lutron’s Homeworks system has always been the standard in home lighting control and its new Alisse keypad just made it more beautiful. The design recalls the vintage aesthetic of a pushbutton light switch with a clean, modern update and all the convenience that a Lutron Homeworks system provides. Available in a wide variety of solid metal finishes and button configurations.
GOLFZON SIMULATORS The popularity of home golf simulators exploded in 2020, and Golfzon has won Golf Digest’s Editor’s Choice award for best premium simulator five years running. Golfzon’s technology is head and shoulders above the competition, featuring a moving swing plate that shifts automatically to provide uphill, downhill and sidehill shots accurately mapped to 200 real-world courses. Fairway, rough, and bunker mats provide realistic hitting surfaces, and unsurpassed ball telemetry makes it a favorite instruction tool for golf professionals around the world.
CINEAK SEATING The resurgence of home cinema has been building with the ever-increasing quality and availability of content from streaming providers. The temporary shutdowns of commercial cinemas finally brought home streaming of first-run theatrical release movies, meaning we’ve realized the pinnacle of the home movie experience. And while motorized cinema seats are popular in dedicated theater rooms, plenty of high-performance media rooms call for sofas rather than recliners. Cineak’s line of custom furniture graces the private cinemas and media rooms of many of the top Hollywood stars and producers. Its Gramercy, Mondrian and Largo sofas can be customized for any leather, fabric or size and still feature the comfort and motorization of its finest cinema chairs.

AMP UP YOUR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING SPACE! By Bill Charney, owner of Advanced Home Audio, advancedhomeaudio.com
Can you really improve a beautiful outdoor living space? You have the fire pit and restaurant-grade kitchen. And furniture for dining and relaxing? Check. Lush landscaping, of course. So what’s left? At Advanced Home Audio, we believe that your out-of-home experience will soar by installing simple-to-use technology. Our passion lies in developing a technological experience that blends seamlessly with the architecture and landscape, creating an inspiring yet comfortable experience. Fast and reliable Wi-Fi is essential to any outdoor living space. We provide enterprise-grade wi-fi systems for your outdoor area that function year-round while withstanding vast seasonal elements. Outdoor televisions are a great addition to any backyard space. They provide entertainment during the daytime and evening hours. Our outdoor television technology is built to provide pristine video quality under direct sunlight and withstands versatile climates. Providing great sound to your outdoor escape requires design that discreetly blends with your landscape and provides top-quality custom sound. Our team provides outdoor sound systems to enhance any televised sporting event, relaxing film, or ambient music to fully immerse you in your entertainment experience. Two major challenges arise when designing outdoor sound. The first is developing a speaker system that is specifically modeled for the outdoor environment.
The second challenge with the outdoor sound is visual aesthetics. Nobody wants to see unnatural speakers that taint the elements of nature. There are a multitude of specialty landscape sound systems that blend harmoniously with the landscape decor and provide great sound. Several other advantages in these systems include the distribution of sound evenly throughout your outdoor space. As a result, you can have comfortable conversation with friends and family and not have to worry about disturbing your neighbors. Our custom sound systems can call for seamless speakers, subwoofers, all accessible through a single touch in the Savant app. Around the perimeter and precisely hidden, our design will proliferate a sideline play-by-play experience, while enjoying the comfort of your backyard. In the evening, your outdoor space naturally lives in a dark abyss. Landscape lighting accentuates the beauty of your outdoor space from dusk to dawn. Create depth in the natural perimeter of your outdoor space by softly illuminating mature trees and shrubbery. This emphasizes an alluring landscape that can be embraced while looking through your living room window, or while entertaining friends and friends in the landscape itself. Our custom lighting design highlights the detail of your hardscape and creates an evening scene and memorable experiences. We develop an aura for our clients’ homes that brings architecture and nature to life and makes you feel as if the home lives through your personal intuition.

FAMILIES VS. DOWNSIZERS “Young families with kids really want to get organized and get on top of the clutter with homework stations, drop zones and mudrooms for all the stuff. Downsizers know their own taste, are confident in their choices and are very open to ways to simplify. They are not looking for status brands.” —Christine Donner
“YOUNG COUPLES WITH GROWING FAMILIES NEED SPACE! THEY LIKE OPEN FLOOR PLANS WITH KITCHENS OPEN TO FAMILY ROOMS AND OTHER LIVING SPACES FOR EVERYDAY LIVING AND ENTERTAINING.” —Buffy Goodwin “While everyone has the same basic needs for bathrooms, I do find families with young children ask for bathtubs and lots of storage. People also consider this for resale. Requests include a separate bathroom for children and, in some cases, each child. As a designer, I can try to tailor the look of the bathroom to the child.” —Jennifer Michael
JENNIFER MICHAEL DESIGN
“YOUNG FAMILIES WANT DURABILITY. DOWNSIZERS ARE NOT LOOKING FOR RESALE AS MUCH, AND ARE LOOKING TO GET EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT IN TERMS OF STYLE.” —Joseph Najmy

COLOR “LIGHT, BRIGHT, TEXTURAL MATERIALS CREATE A BALANCED PALETTE. PAINT FINISHES, OVERALL, REMAIN A FORM OF WHITE, BUT WE ARE SEEING ROBUST COLORS LIKE GREEN, CHARCOAL AND BLUE.” —Joseph Najmy
“Light, pastel colors are growing in popularity at the moment and soft natural-looking worktops never go out of style.” —Darren Watts “WE ARE SEEING COLORED KITCHENS IN DARK BLUES, SHADES OF GREEN AND GRAYS. HIGH GLOSS LACQUER IS POPULAR IN KITCHENS, BARS AND BUTLER’S PANTRIES. COLORED APPLIANCES ADD A POP OF COLOR. LACORNUE, BLUE STAR, LACANCHE, VIKING, DACOR, KITCHENAID AND SMEG ARE A FEW BRANDS THAT HAVE COLORED OPTIONS IN THEIR COLLECTIONS.” —Buffy Goodwin

WISH LISTS “STEAM OVENS AND DOCKING DRAWERS [OUTLETS AND CHARGING STATIONS INSIDE DRAWERS FOR ELECTRONICS] ARE IN HIGH DEMAND. SPLURGE ITEMS INCLUDE CUSTOM METAL HOODS AND HIGH-END RANGES LIKE LACANCHE.” —Christine Donner
“Clients seem willing to splurge on luxury, notably, large, freestanding tubs and showers with lots of bells and whistles.” —Jennifer Michael
“Kitchen wish lists often include fridge drawers, undercounter wine coolers, good pantry storage, and, of course, the essential island that serves many functions as a prep table, eat-in kitchen table and homework counter. Sustainability-wise, more people are asking specifically for low- to no-VOCs, materials with a low carbon footprint and water-filtration systems. Many clients request a composting bin in a dedicated pullout, just like trash and recycling.” —Buffy Goodwin

WHAT’S TRENDING
“Combining different surfaces, textures and colors in both kitchens and baths. We may use a rift cut, wire brushed oak for the island and pair it with a matte lacquer door on the perimeter.” —Buffy Goodwin
”More horizontal lines, lift doors, handle-free cabinetry, porcelain countertops with bookmatched backsplashes, pantries with pocket doors and fully customized storage.” —Joseph Najmy ”Floating shelves, multiple dishwashers, custom hinges and panels for appliances, brass in polished or brushed finishes, outdoor kitchens.” —Ria Rueda

”I am seeing a lack of interest in ornamentation —no corbels or onlays, no more trophy kitchens, cleaner lines, stronger colors, much more practical and contemporary or transitional styles, open floor plans and bigger islands.” —Christine Donner

STORAGE: “People want their own designated space in the bathroom. Storage is important and needs to be both functional and attractive. Clients don’t want to see outlets, so they are asking for plugs and charging stations to be hidden inside cabinets or drawers. Organization inside cabinets and drawers is requested for things like styling tools and cosmetics.” —Jennifer Michael
COUNTERTOPS: “Lately people have been very practical about countertops and want no-maintenance quartz. No more blowing the budget on a rare marble.”

FIXURES/HARDWARE: “Black hardware and faucets are a beautiful punctuation to a light kitchen and look very modern in any setting, plus they pair well with black mullioned windows and doors.” —Buffy Goodwin
CABINETRY: “CABINETRY HAS EVOLVED TO INCLUDE A WIDER RANGE OF CUSTOMIZATION, FROM GLASS TO GLOSS, AND A MIX OF TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS WITH MODERN CONTEMPORARY STYLES AND CLEAN LINES.” —Joseph Najmy
TRUE RESIDENTIAL
APPLIANCES: “I make a point to ask more questions about my clients’ lifestyle and how they use their kitchen—there may be appliances they never thought of that may be of interest to them. Recently, there have been a lot of inquiries about refrigeration, especially refrigerator drawers, speed ovens and steam ovens. Clients who are tech-savvy love the convenience of Wi-Fi connected appliances. —Ria Rueda

ARTWORK “Go big—opt for a larger scale. Not only will it serve as a focal feature, it will ground and anchor the space, provide texture and add visual interest. Here is a list of the distinguished professionals whose exemplary work has graced the pages of the magazine this year, plus the 2021 Innovation in Design Award winners and finalists, and all of the recipients of our prestigious Innovator Award.
