EDITOR’S LETTER

Floating Flowers It’s shooting season at HC&G, which means back-to-back photo shoots that will provide us with enough feature stories to take us through another summer season. It also means that I need to stay on my mark, as every shoot poses challenges, including what I have come to think of as the dreaded floating flowers syndrome. ■ Floating flowers, you ask? Why yes, let me tell you. If you are one of those scrutinous readers whom I deeply admire yet occasionally cringe away from in fear, you have probably called me on the rare occasion that I have allowed the same flower arrangement to appear in more than one room. It’s like a minefield. On set, an assistant might move a bouquet from a kitchen to a bath without my noticing. Or a photographer might say, “Don’t you think this shot needs some flowers? How about those gorgeous tulips we used in the living room?” To which I reply, hopefully making my point but stopping just shy of Faye Dunaway–like scenery chewing, “No floating flowers!!” And then I pray that the day’s work will move along just swimmingly from there. ■ This issue, in fact, narrowly escaped a floating flowers episode, thanks to the magic of Photoshop. Yes, it’s possible that two similar arrangements could exist in different rooms, but an exotic perennial in a 300-yearold family-heirloom cachepot? I don’t think so. I learned my lesson while working at another magazine many years ago, when my boss decided to change the color of a throw pillow on the cover, making the decorator in charge of the project furious. True, there are bigger problems in the world, but then again, the details are just as important.

Rinse And Repeat? Look for these tulips in a future issue of HC&G. Hopefully only once.

LETTER FROM THE CEO

Lauding Lee I love what I do every day. Not only am I passionate about the architecture and design world that surrounds me, but I also get to meet its industry stars. And they don’t shine brighter than architect Lee Skolnick, who will receive HC&G’s coveted Innovator Award at the Innovation in Design Awards (IDAs) ceremony in the Hamptons on September 30. ■ “All human beings learn through stories,” Skolnick has said, “and that’s how I see architecture—our job is to help people understand and live beneficially.” So it only follows that his body of work encompasses public buildings including museums, hospitals, and children’s centers from Bulgaria to the Hamptons, as well as fantastic private homes, such as the North Haven residence of artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik, whose house features a fantastic “floating library” and was showcased in the August 15, 2013, issue of HC&G. Fischl and Gornik have recently opened the doors to the Church in Sag Harbor, a space for artisans and makers to experiment and create. Their architect? Lee Skolnick, of course, who undertook the daunting conversion of the circa-1835 United Methodist Church into a stunning modern meeting place—surely the kind of innovation that’s worthy of an Innovator Award, and the perfect venue for us to bestow him with this honor. ■ For more information, go to cgidas.com/hamptons. I hope to see you there.

YEARS OF TIMELESS DESIGN

GWEN WHITING

A New Jersey native, the Laundress co-founder Gwen Whiting credits her Midwestern mother for the fresh-scrubbed appeal of her Bridgehampton home (“Squeaky Clean,” page 72). “My mom is from Wisconsin, which is different from being an East Coaster,” says Whiting. “She talks to anybody and has a very Midwestern approach to cooking and entertaining, making weird recipes like Jell-O mold.” In addition to her domestic DNA, Whiting also worked for many years as a senior designer at Ralph Lauren Home.

CHARLOTTE MOSS

“I have been a voracious reader since childhood,” says decorator Charlotte Moss, who has authored 11 books of her own, including the brand-new Charlotte Moss Flowers (“Verdant Vignettes,” page 80). “Books were friends, a favorite pastime, a passport to foreign lands. Collect them and showcase them, if you will, but please, not by the yard in your favorite color or wrapped in matching parchment jackets. Books are for reading.” As for flowers, she adds, “They add life, color, and a note of beauty to any interior.”

Responding to each project with unique solutions as varied as our clients.

ARCHITECTS

BRITTANY AMBRIDGE

A longtime collaborator of decorator Charlotte Moss’s, photographer Brittany Ambridge was thrilled to focus her lens on the flora featured in the new book Charlotte Moss Flowers (“Verdant Vignettes,” page 80). “Flowers are beautiful at every stage, and it’s educational to see how they evolve,” Ambridge says. “During the shoot, Charlotte trusted me at every step along the way, which is so important. She was also a very gracious host, leaving little cookies and flowers by our beds and serving us lobster for dinner.” —Shannon Assenza

What Lies Beneath Quincy Hammond goes deep on the many benefits of ground covers

Nature’s Sidekicks (this image) A swath of lawn and a dense spread of pachysandra anchor and amplify a row of crape myrtles. (below) Alliums pop through gossamer wisps of Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’, a grass ground cover. See Resources.

HC&G: How do you define ground-cover plants? QUINCY HAMMOND, landscape architect,

Quincy Hammond Landscape Architecture:

In general terms, they are mass- and mat-forming plants that stay close to the ground, up to 18 inches tall. What’s not as well known is that many act as erosion stabilizers, keeping topsoil in place. Even a regular lawn fits the bill, as well as other grasses like sedges and Carex. And although it’s a bit tall, I’m currently using Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’ [golden tufted hair grass], which is very fine and has golden seed heads that sparkle in the sun.

How did ground covers come into play in garden design?

Ground covers such as moss and pachysandra, which are Japanese in origin, have long been prevalent in Japanese gardens and are now common on the East End. But ground covers have also played an important role in the evolution of European gardens, from the very formal gardens of the Renaissance to picturesque British gardens, with their big expanses of lawn. Ivy has been used extensively in England as well, and in the latter half of the last century, [landscape architect] Russell Page used ground covers to create seamless landscapes for his clients.

GARDENING

“Many ground covers also act as erosion stabilizers, keeping topsoil in place”

Upstart Understudies (above left and bottom right) Flowering ground covers such as vinca and bearberry offer spring color, and bearberry’s foliage provides fall interest as well. (above right) A random fern planted here and there perks up a bed of pachysandra. (near right) Moss has been a popular ground cover for centuries. See Resources.

Why should we use ground covers?

Ground-cover plants are easy and low maintenance—perhaps another reason they have become popular in American gardens. They can cover vast swaths of bare soil and really suppress weeds, and evergreen types, like English ivy, pachysandra, and vinca, offer the big plus of staying green year-round. When used deliberately, they can also be lovely. In a Southampton project, we have about an acre of pachysandra under a copse of trees. It grows in the dense shade and is prettier to look at than mulch or weeds. What are the best native ground covers?

I like a lot of ferns, and also grasses such as Deschampsia. Bearberry [Arctostaphylos uva-ursi] is

nice and not too unruly, with great fall color and good erosion stabilization qualities— particularly in seaside applications, since it is salt tolerant. We’ve all seen doilies of impatiens beneath trees in people’s yards. What would you recommend as an alternative?

In general, I’m not a big fan of annuals, period. Pachysandra, as I mentioned, looks great beneath trees, particularly when it’s underplanted with a succession of bulbs for seasonal color. Or just throw in a random fern here and there, which upends all the perfection just a smidge. —Alejandro Saralegui

rmed with a cinema camera and grip gear, as well as a drone operated from his cellphone, digital artist Harris Allen wades into the chilly waters of Great Peconic Bay to document its “golden hour” waves. “It’s easy to see the stark contrast that illuminates the water during this time,” says Allen, whose digital “window sculptures” evoke a sense of natural movement and infinite expression. A full-time resident of Sag Harbor, Allen grew up in rural Indiana, where he became fascinated with water while learning how to sail on Lake Maxinkuckee. Still an avid sailor today, he races Beetle Cats at Breakwater Yacht Club on Wednesdays and at Georgica Association on weekends. “I’ve always been drawn to the water surrounding the North and South forks, the distinct nuances of the flow and texture,” he says. “When you cross Long Island Sound by ferry, you get a unique, four-story-high perspective of the water, which I try to re-create in my work.” In his studio, Allen edits, frames, trims, and crops terabytes of footage using Final Cut Pro software. “As a kid,” he recounts, “I learned how to edit on an early version of iMovie. I would shoot and edit a video every day to develop my skills.” Allen also uses a cardboard “mask” while he edits, which he holds up to the monitor’s screen to assess the acutely different variations and possibilities of flow and movement for his window sculptures. “One of the biggest barriers to digital art, especially when you’re trying to

depict nature, is that it’s digital,” Allen says. “I want the feeling of the water to shine through first and foremost. That’s why the verticality of each window is important: It conveys a glimpse of the natural world in a sculptural way.” The artist even takes the “frame rate” of the water’s movement into consideration, so that the biophilic result is “peripherally calming.” Allen’s aluminum-framed window sculptures are designed for easy “plug in and play” installation, with a small computer mounted to the back for hard-drive storage. With the water as his muse, he sees no end to his artistic reach. “I like to explore people’s relationships with the water,” he says, “capturing the uniqueness of a location that they might not have the privilege of seeing every day.” —Doug Young

Anyone who takes a spin along Southampton’s sinuous oceanfront Meadow Lane would be hard-pressed not to notice the McMansions of industry titans along its five-mile stretch, but these overshadow the road’s rich architectural history, which has recently caught the eye of preservationists. Meadow’s retro beach pads—constructed between the 1960s and the ’80s by modern masters such as Ward Bennett, Norman Jaffe, and Myron Goldfinger—served as summer getaways for prominent artists, art dealers, and television and advertising executives. Consider, for example, the Sugarman House, which Ward Bennett conceived for television producer Marvin Sugarman (of Captain Kangaroo fame) and his wife, Ronnie, during the ’60s. Discreetly tucked into a 2.75-acre oceanfront lot at 1360 Meadow Lane, the stucco Cubist house

is perched on nine-foot stilts and features earthy materials—stone tile, teak, and plaster—in the spirit of Mexican architect Luis Barragán. “It’s so forward-thinking in its design that it looks like it could have been built this year,” says Hamptons-based interior designer and modernistarchitecture enthusiast Timothy Godbold, who has recently joined forces with other preservation-minded activists to draw attention to the East End’s mid-20th-century gems. In contrast, Myron Goldfinger’s 1984 Temple in the Dunes (1820 Meadow Lane) is inspired in part by the Mediterranean. “Imagine Santorini at sunset, with its all-white plaster silhouettes,” says Godbold, who also gives high praise to a cedar-clad 1986 beach house by Norman Jaffe at 2170 Meadow Lane, currently available as a $550,000 year-round rental through James Giugliano

Calling all bibliophiles: One lucky buyer has the chance to own a piece of literary history. The Sag Harbor residence that acclaimed novelist John Steinbeck shared with his wife, Elaine, is on the market for $17.9 million through Sotheby’s International Realty’s Doreen Atkins. The secluded 1.8-acre property overlooking Morris Cove and Upper Sag Harbor Cove features 586 feet of water frontage, a 60-foot dock, and a pool that Steinbeck referred to as the “Cement Pond.” In addition to the primary two-bedroom residence from 1953, there’s a guest cottage, as well as Steinbeck’s former “Writing House” overlooking the point. “This property is heavenly,” says Cee Scott Brown, a Compass broker who has lived next door for more than 25 years with his husband, decorator John Bjørnen. “We installed a friendship gate between our houses, and Elaine would come over for a sunset drink once or twice a month and regale us with stories of her life with John. East Hampton– based Sound Aircraft Flight Enterprises, for example, books and operates charters across the Northeast, but works with Blade to fill its New

Similarly, charter service Fly the Whale collaborates with Blade on New York–East Hampton and Teterboro-Montauk routes, while booking its own charters for New Yorkers looking to land elsewhere on the East End. “East Hampton alone represents about 60 to 70 percent of our total summer traffic,” says Fly the Whale president Omer ErSelcuk. For Hamptonites, he continues, “it’s the best Gotham escape plan you can execute.” New York has no shortage of helicopter charters, either. In addition to sightseeing tours of the city, Wings Air, New York Helicopter, and Awesome Flight, to name a few, provide shuttle services to the East End. For service departing from downtown, HeliNY flies to Westhampton, Southampton, and East Hampton starting at $2,545 (one way) or $2,995 (round trip), with room for six. Similar flights from Zip Aviation—which take off from either downtown or Midtown—begin at $2,500 (one way) or $3,100 (round trip), although discounts on multiple-flight packages are often available. n secluded grounds overlooking sundrenched marshland and beautiful Quantuck Bay, Marshmere, a historic Quogue home dating from 1902, looms like a sentinel. The dream of famed naval war historian Admiral Alfred William Mahan, the gracious, classically proportioned home was designed by architects Satterlee & Boyd, with landscape and gardens by Beatrix Farrand. Finished in the shingle style that characterizes the finest Hamptons cottages of the day, Marshmere is a powerful symbol of the allure that has beckoned people to the village of Quogue for the better part of two centuries. By the time ground broke on Marshmere’s construction, Quogue had been a bustling beachfront community for some 50 years. Formed in 1659, when John Ogden purchased a swath of land named Quawcanantucke from the Shinnecock Nation, Quogue was originally a grazing ground for livestock and cattle belonging to settlers in Southampton to the east. Over time, their descendants became the first residents of Quogue, lending their family names to streets and homes still extant throughout the village today. Admiral Mahan, widely considered “the father of modern naval warfare,” was among the most famous and wellregarded residents, and his home, Marshmere, became the standard bearer of quiet Quogue good taste. Marshmere’s current owners, Quogue residents since 1979, were drawn to the three-story home’s rich history and have lovingly ushered it through two renovations. The first, a sweeping refurbishment in 2005, significantly updated common rooms, including a reimagined kitchen (it retains its 64

original cornflower-blue Delft tiles) and the creation of spacious, south-facing breakfast and family rooms, which provide smoother access to the swimming pool and grounds beyond. A second, smaller project in 2015 incorporated a new ground-floor playroom to accommodate the owners’ grandchildren, as well as a new main bath, complete with an expansive south-facing terrace. The latter renovation prompted the owners to call on their trusted friend, New York City– and Palm Beach–based interior designer Jennifer Garrigues. A worldly, no-nonsense Brit, Garrigues traveled with her clients to Morocco and India to shop the markets and find inspiration for the redesign, making the very traditional, refined home feel more contemporary and current. “There’s nothing as inspiring as different worlds coming together,” Garrigues says. “I love juxtaposing beautiful antiques with modern art and furniture.” The muted color palette on many of the walls creates a blank canvas for vivid, vibrant accessories, such as Moroccan runners and abstract paintings, and the first-floor library’s walls have been given a custom-mixed high-gloss aquamarine that seems straight out of Marrakech. Here, Garrigues also incorporated a shimmery new fireplace tile that further enhances the room’s modern glamour. Other pops of color appear in the Pineapple Room (charmingly named for the vintage pendant light that hangs within it), where slipper chairs are covered in a warm citrus fabric and positioned to look out on the magnificent gardens, which were reinvigorated by landscape designer Elliott Templeton and the late floral garden designer Sarah Stanton. 68

any people have a vision of their soul mate from an early age. For Gwen Whiting, who co-founded the company the Laundress and knows a thing or two about manifesting, the path to personal happiness couldn’t have been clearer. “My life goal,” she says, “was to have a house in the Hamptons.” Whiting achieved her happily ever after through years of hard work and scrupulous saving while she was living in a 350-square-foot rent-controlled apartment in the West Village. Before starting the Laundress, the plantbased, eco-friendly line of cleaning products fetishized by style-conscious neat freaks around the globe, she worked as a senior designer for Ralph Lauren Home. During this time, she often visited her boss, mentor, and good friend Ellen O’Neill, who had a home in Bridgehampton that often doubled as a location for photo shoots. “The story of my home is one of goals, growth, and love,” says Whiting, who took it as a sign that her new house, a classic 1920s charmer in Bridgehampton Village, came with two sets of washing machines. “The previous owner had a beautiful slop sink set up on the back porch. For her, it was for pottery, and for me, it was the hand-washing suite. The house was something I could start with, but also grow with.” Having collected items for years from Ralph Lauren, as well as antiques and family treasures (including a few pieces from O’Neill), she didn’t have to buy a single stick of furniture, only mattresses, when she moved in. Whiting’s stars also aligned fortuitously when she met her husband, James Dale, when he was newly arrived from London to New York and taking his first trip east on the Long Island Rail Road. (The change in Jamaica can be confusing to people who are only familiar with the Caribbean country.) The couple, whose welcome mat bears the portmanteau “Whitingdale,” married in 2016, and not long after, Whiting undertook a renovation that would turn the house into a sanctuary of soothing energy, peace, and joy, not to mention the most beautifully appointed laundry room in the Hamptons. The home’s original footprint and façade have been retained, although the structure is now double in size and also includes a new pool and pool house. “The history and charm are still there,” comments Whiting, who sold the Laundress in 2019 and now has a consulting role, “but the open layout makes it feel updated and modern.” Her partner in crime: John Hulka, a dear friend from Ralph Lauren and the architect of the Laundress store and offices. “John was used to my calling at odd hours,” Whiting recalls with a smile, “as I’d FaceTime him from a basement hardware store in Paris and ask how many knobs I needed for the cabinets.”

“Every floor and wall in the house is white,” Whiting says jokingly. “I am very close with my painter”

The design palette, which can justifiably be described as clean, is as pleasing as a crisply pressed white cotton shirt. “Every floor and wall in the house is white,” Whiting says jokingly. “I am very close with my painter.” The white lacquer on the floors, developed from a special formula including boat paint, came to Whiting via her chum Paul Ebbitts, another Ralph Lauren compatriot. Whiting and Dale’s love of cooking and entertaining have made the central open kitchen a focal point, with warm unlacquered brass details and taps from Aston Matthews in London, sparkling copper pots on open shelves, and a gleaming Lacanche range. And peppered throughout the home are “the small luxuries,” as Whiting calls them, “everything I’ve collected and just loved.” It’s a treasure trove, to be sure: vintage Baccarat ashtrays, a whimsical set of family-heirloom watermelon dishes acquired with coupons from a Wisconsin grocery store (complete with a recipe for marshmallow fruit dip), and a delicate china tea set from her Aunt Eno, which she uses daily as a gesture toward “having my ancestral people around me.” Other pieces range from a painting and mirror scored at

the East Hampton estate sale of Judith Leiber to a vintage outdoor dining set from Collette Home. A romantic English countryside vibe prevails, from a luxurious tub in the main bedroom to climbing fragrant roses on the pool house, with natural motifs being an essential component of the decor. “I was drawn to beautiful bird prints from Bennison and Scalamandré, since we greatly enjoy all the bird life in our yard, from cardinals to hummingbirds,” says Whiting. “And we have kumquat trees flanking the dining room, which we have managed to keep alive since the day of our wedding.” Creature comforts of the non-organic kind include the new wellness center in the basement, which boasts an infrared sauna, a steam shower, and a workout center. And an adjacent room contains dual home offices where “Meg,” Whiting’s bust form for draping that she has had since college, holds court. For Whiting, it seems, you can take it with you, no matter what your destiny might be. “I lived in the house for a while before deciding on its next incarnation,” she muses, “and now I’m stepping away and taking some time to see what comes next.” ✹ july 1, 2021

Y

ou would be forgiven if you walked into the Sag Harbor home of architect Filipe Pereira and fashion designer Austyn Zung and complimented them on preserving the house’s historic charm. Indeed, the structure was built in 1893, and Pereira’s artful renovation has given it a well-loved, old-home ambiance, but when the couple purchased it, there was almost no original detail to save. The house was so unimpressive, in fact, that it took Pereira a year and a half to convince Zung that they should buy it. “I

couldn’t see it,” says Zung, “but Filipe had a very clear vision— and I’m so happy that he did.” Pereira, who has worked for luminaries like Zaha Hadid and Peter Marino and now runs his own practice, suspected that there were good bones beneath the vinyl siding and awkwardly placed windows. One of three residences built in the late 19th century for managers of the Bulova watch factory, the house and its lot were small—1,400 square feet and a tenth of an acre—but the diamond in the rough also gleamed with the added value of being within walking distance of the village. A gut renovation ensued. “I immediately knew what I would

immediately knew what I would do with the space,” says Filipe Pereira. “We wanted something small and manageable,” not some big house that makes you feel like you can’t go on vacation” do with the space,” says Pereira, who envisioned adding a small sunroom at the back, without making any other major changes to the interior layout. For the exterior, he walked the neighborhood, looking for clues that would help him give the façade proper context. He ended up moving the front entrance and windows to more historically appropriate and aesthetically pleasing positions and adding a gable to the roof, which had the dual benefit of giving a welcome feeling of loftiness to the main bedroom. Inside, Zung and Pereira, who have a son in high school, plotted out easygoing rooms that could handle a little sand on the floors and be closed up quickly at the end of a weekend. “We wanted something small and manageable,” Pereira says, “not some big house that makes you feel like you can’t go on vacation.” The july 1, 2021

couple are lifelong collectors, so storage was key to the design scheme. Pereira tucked in bookcases wherever there was a stretch of unused wall, and open storage in the kitchen and dining room holds more books, dishes, and curios, which are styled almost like merchandise in a store (not surprising for an architect who has created interiors for Jil Sander and Hermès and a former creative director at Ann Taylor). Pereira even tucked a false door into the living room to get surfboards in and out of the basement. As the renovation plans got underway, the couple realized that the home was calling out for more than the “simple beach house” redo they’d originally imagined, says Pereira. Zung’s longing for old floors led to a months-long hunt for just the right reclaimed wood, which Pereira then installed in intricate herringbone and parquet de Versailles patterns. A hobbyist woodworker, Pereira also salvaged the cedar that they found beneath the vinyl siding, replaned the wood, and used it to build the custom shelves in the dining room. Ten yards of fabric that Zung discovered at a market in Delhi became the jumping-off point for a lacquered green powder room. And when the couple came across a vintage sink at the Brimfield antiques fair, Pereira designed a custom brass frame for it. “We were going to make everything super simple,” says Zung, “especially since the house is so small. But it’s just too much fun to keep layering on the details.” ✹ 96

Warm the oil in a wide, shallow saucepan or small Dutch oven over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring until it starts to turn golden. Add the anchovies and cook for 1 minute longer. Remove from heat and cool slightly, then add the wine. Return pan to the stove and bring to a boil, then cook over medium heat until liquid reduces by half. Add tomatoes, capers, olives, salt and pepper to taste, and a big pinch of red pepper flakes. Simmer 5 to 10 minutes more. Add ¾ cup water and return to a simmer over medium-low heat. Add the shrimp and cook, covered, stirring once or twice, until they start to turn pink, about 2 minutes. Season the fish lightly with salt and pepper and add it to the pot. Cover and cook, stirring gently once or twice until fish is just opaque on the outside, 3 to 4 minutes. (Be careful not to overcook it.) Stir in most of the parsley, reserving some for the garnish. Divide the stew evenly into 4 warmed bowls. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle parsley on top of each, and serve with grilled or toasted bread and more red pepper flakes on the side. SABINA STREETER

“I came to Sag Harbor on the back of a BMW motorcycle in the 1980s and fell in love with the town. I mostly grew up in Munich and the Bavarian countryside and was never a big city person. Let’s just say the beer and skiing are better over there, and the seafood and sailing are better here. I live in an 1820s whaling captain’s house, which is a little strange, given that my father was a hardcore Bauhaus-oriented Modernist architect who refused to visit Neuschwanstein, King Ludwig II’s neo-medieval castle in Bavaria. I’m a romantic at heart, as well as a bit of a history nerd, and Sag Harbor’s wealth of historic buildings has deepened my affinity for 18th- and 19th-century architecture. I painted my first historical portrait in 2014, when I was shocked at how quickly historic houses were being gutted, rather than restored. I have since had several exhibitions of my portraits of seafaring Sag Harborites and iconic village residents, including the 19th-century African-American and Native American inhabitants of Sag Harbor’s Eastville community. I hope these portraits illustrate and emphasize the amazing diversity of our local history.”
