YEARS OF TIMELESS DESIGN
Spring Refresh Now that well over a year has passed since we were engulfed in the dark cloud of the pandemic, is the dawn of a new Roaring Twenties upon us? This spring, while ramping up for another summer season of HC&G and planning for future issues of NYC&G, I left the house a whole lot more than I did the year before. There were dozens of scouting appointments and photo shoots, restaurant outings, and museum visits—all following proper masking protocol, of course. But while busting out has been undeniably liberating and fun, something keeps gnawing at me: Why is it that I can never wait to get back home? ■ Among the many lessons learned during 2020 is that home—both the tangible, literal structure and the emotional and spiritual grounding it gives us—is not to be taken for granted. I spent a lot of time in my Brooklyn apartment (I even painted it!), as well as in my house in Bridgehampton, feeling very lucky to have a roof over my head and the good fortune to live in two of the world’s most wonderful places. And I’ve watched how others have taken a fresh approach to their homes, spiffing them up and treating them anew as safe havens and sanctuaries. There’s no question that I’m going to get out more as the weather warms, but I don’t think I’ll ever look at the notion of home in quite the same way as I did in the past. Here’s to a great, safe summer.

Earthly Delights NYC&G was the media sponsor of Wave Hill’s Spring Gala, and HC&G is looking forward to sponsoring Guild Hall’s Garden as Art garden tour on June 26.
PORTRAIT: RICHARD LEWIN; GARDEN: KATHLEEN BIFULCO
Among the many things our company is known for are the staggering number of events we sponsor each year. On the heels of the challenges posed in 2020, there is a decided frisson of excitement in the air, as we safely and enthusiastically embrace some of the local charities and benefits that we all hold dear. ■ New on this year’s roster is Wave Hill, the wonderful 28-acre garden in Riverdale whose annual Spring Gala on May 20 was sponsored by NYC&G, while HC&G is proud to sponsor Guild Hall’s upcoming Garden as Art on June 26. This self-guided tour of five exclusive Hamptons gardens is one of my all-time favorite East End happenings. ■ We are also ramping up for the Hampton Designer Showhouse, presented by HC&G and benefiting Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. A true hybrid of old and new, the circa-1835 home in Southampton will undergo a renovation adhering to strict historic façade guidelines, guaranteeing that the sumptuous Italianate brackets and swan spirals on the front porch will be retained. Meanwhile, the house itself will grow to 7,000 square feet on three levels, which 23 top designers will transform into inspirational spaces ranging from a spectacular chef’s kitchen and spa-like baths to a home office, an in-law suite, and a pool and pool house exemplifying the best of indoor/outdoor living. Mark your calendars for the gala preview party on September 18, or visit the showhouse anytime through October 31. And look for exclusive coverage in the November issues of both HC&G and NYC&G. For tickets, go to cottagesgardens.com/hds2021. I hope to see you there.
We connect you to your wine delivery, so you can keep poolside happy hours flowing.

CHRISTOPHER LAGUARDIA
For landscape architect Christopher LaGuardia, the biggest challenge in creating his first book, Contemporary Gardens of the Hamptons (Monacelli Press), “was to let go of favorite photographs that just didn’t mesh with the overall look.” But of all the garden designs to choose from to grace the cover, he adds, the winner is “pretty striking and very contemporary, so it fits with our firm’s mission.” LaGuardia, the subject of this issue’s “Gardening” column (page 58), is already lining up projects for his next book.
After helping Martha Stewart “with some of her shoots way back in the 1980s,” recalls stylist, designer, and author Tricia Foley, the domestic doyenne “encouraged me to write my first book—about tea!” A longtime resident of Long Island, Foley admires how the East End “is still so untouched and so charming, with both the best from the past and whatever’s new.” Images excerpted from her latest book, A Summer Place: Living by the Sea (Rizzoli), are featured in this issue’s “Bellport Beauty” (page 86).
ANTHONY WATTS AND DOMINIC LEPERE
In “Contemporary Hero” (page 104), New Yorkers Anthony Watts (far left) and Dominic Lepere report on their life as first-time Hamptons homeowners. “We experience things differently here than in the city,” says Watts, the founder of an interior styling service. “The four seasons are distinct and beautiful.” To which his husband, who runs an eponymous showroom in the New York Design Center, adds: “You can get the best of everything out East. It truly rivals Manhattan.” —Shannon Assenza

MARKET EDITOR: LUCY BAMMAN
Some trends come and (thankfully) go, but an age-old textile pattern has dug its seductive roots deeper than ever before. As the world cautiously emerges from a dark year, the tree of life motif continues to symbolize growth and rebirth, with crawling vines and blooming branches reinterpreted and newly invigorated. These uplifting pieces for the home, such as Gucci’s velvet jacquard armchair, are a breath of fresh air. $5,500, at Gucci, 63 Wooster St., NYC, 212-710-8980, gucci.com.

Plants native to the Northeast are particularly useful near the ocean because they are salt tolerant, hardy, and often deer resistant. They also provide habitat and food for insects, pollinators, and birds and in some cases even create biodiversity where previously there may have been none.

What is your go-to native tree or shrub?
Bayberry, without a doubt, is the most versatile plant on the East End. It can be used in hedges or as small trees or shrubs, it’s deer resistant, and it grows in full sun to partial shade. It has wonderful green foliage in the summer and very clean branches in the winter. I am also very fond of shadblow, which has beautiful flowers and a windswept, “Montauk look.” How do you see gardens evolving in the future?
Early in my career, there was a big shift from woody plants to blocks of perennials, in the style of Oehme, van Sweden. There was an economy to

“It’s all about finding the proper mix and plant material that works”
When is it okay not to use natives?
We sometimes do hybrid plantings of natives and non-native ornamentals. It’s all about finding the proper mix and plant material that works. On the ocean, for example, crape myrtles flower and are salt tolerant. And you can also count on ‘Torulosa’ junipers and California privet to perform well. Is there a new Holy Trinity of East End plants?

resistant and a good replacement for holly; crape myrtles are hardy, with interesting bark; and ornamental grasses and other fountain grasses, such as autumn moor grass, require little maintenance. What is the future of the great American lawn?
The lawn is over as a sign of entrepreneurial power. It’s diminishing to smaller, more functional areas, such as lawn terraces or panels, which make attractive substitutes for paving. A smaller mown lawn might transition to Pennsylvania sedge and then a taller grass meadow beyond. their designs because for the price of one tree, you could plant a whole garden of perennials. More recently, we’ve seen Piet Oudolf’s perennial matrix: a base layer of grasses with drifts of flowering perennials, exemplified by his firm’s work on the High Line in New York City. This approach to gardening is both sustainable and beautiful.
Sites Specific (clockwise from top left) Trees and meadow punctuate the crisp edge of a formal lawn in Sagaponack. A native wildflower meadow grows in lieu of a grass lawn, requiring no irrigation. A stone terrace leads toward wetlands. A garden design in Montauk is planted not only to embrace water views, but also to address tricky hillside drainage issues. See Resources.

lthough she learned to knit as a child and pursued fiber arts for decades, Nancy Winarick didn’t start knitting and crocheting rugs until she realized that she needed a place to wipe her sandy feet. Her chunky, almost sculptural floor coverings turned out to be the perfect antidote to a small problem at her oceanfront home in Mexico, where the Shelter Island resident spends half the year. “You just don’t want to be tracking sand into your bed,” says Winarick, who, once she got rolling, “kept making more and more rugs. It has turned into an amazing creative outlet.” Not only has Winarick’s craft evolved into a new vocation, but it also has enabled her to explore yarn, a material she has dedicated her life to, in a new way. “I love yarn—it thrills me,” says Winarick, a longtime knitwear designer who has worked for brands including Vera Wang, Gabriela Hearst, and Isaac Mizrahi. “Unlike garments that have to fit and look nice on a body, rugs are more freeform and liberating. There’s seemingly no limit to what I can do.” Winarick even encourages alternative uses for her floor

coverings, such as runners on dining tables or accent pieces on beds. Her latest work: crocheted pillows and wall hangings, sold at both Elizabeth Dow Home in East Hampton and Simm’s on Shelter Island. In Winarick’s Shelter Island studio, shelves are piled high with different yarns collected throughout her career. (Italian merino wool, Peruvian alpaca, and jute in neutral tones rank among her favorites.) She works in the space for several hours each day, culling designs from vintage pattern books or online and adding her own twists along the way. “It’s like a recipe,” muses Winarick. “You do what the pattern says, and it’s fabulous or sometimes it isn’t fabulous, but at least it takes you in a direction.” To increase the durability and density of the rugs, she also typically felts the fibers, first agitating them in a water-filled sink (or in her pool in Mexico), then heating them in the dryer. “The process is difficult to control because it’s not very precise, and you never really know how it’s going to turn out. But on a good day, the outcome is amazing.” —Kelly Velocci

MARKET MANIA
A year ago last spring, when city dwellers fled to more hospitable environs as the COVID19 crisis unfolded, the Hamptons and New York’s suburbs boomed. By December 2020, new signed contracts in the Hamptons had risen year-over-year for seven straight months, with the most activity between $2 million and $10 million, according to appraisal firm Miller Samuel, which also notes that the median sale price of $5.8 million reflected an increase of 65.7 percent from the third quarter of 2019 to the same time last year. “The market has far surpassed expectations and continues to be very active,” says Yorgos Tsibiridis, a broker at Douglas Elliman’s East Hampton office. According to a 2020 fourth-quarter report by real estate firm Houlihan Lawrence, yearover-year sales also surged in Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties, where all luxury markets generated triple-digit gains: Sales of $1 million–plus properties in Putnam and Dutchess counties increased 450 percent, while sales of $2 million–plus homes rose 145
percent in Westchester. “When the governor allowed businesses to reopen last June, boom! There was so much pent-up demand from buyers that homes languishing on the market
“When the governor allowed businesses to reopen last June, boom! There was so much pent-up demand from buyers that homes languishing on the market for two years sold immediately” for two years sold immediately,” says Houlihan Lawrence broker Linda Finn, who received eight offers on a Bedford listing that closed for $1.165 million—nearly 33 percent over its $875,000 ask—in December.
Despite the spring exodus, the news wasn’t all bad for New York City, as sales and prices began to pick up by the end of the year. “New development led the market,” reports Sotheby’s International Realty broker Nikki Field. “Our investors came in early, fast, and low. They recognized that the city was on sale and took advantage of the best buyer’s market since 2009.” But the days of “COVID discounts” might be ending, as first-quarter 2021 reports affirm that sales continue to rise. According to Miller Samuel, the number of sales in Manhattan increased 28.7 percent from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021. The number of signed contracts for Manhattan condos between $5 million and $9.99 million was 740 percent higher this March compared with the same time last year, and a staggering 2,800 percent for condos between $4 million and $4.99 million. Brooklyn also saw a big bounce within that period, with signed contracts for condos between $1 million and $1.99 million skyrocketing 1,300 percent, and condos

Real estate isn’t the only business that’s going gangbusters: Estate-sale firms are raking it in as homes briskly change hands. “Many of my clients are relocating to South Florida,” says Yasemin O’Neill, who has operated Southampton-based Estate Sales by Yasemin for 15 years. “And my customers from Europe who aren’t returning to their Hamptons homes are looking to sell their things.” O’Neill’s business was up 75 percent in 2020 compared with the prior year, increasing from one or two sales a month to a whopping three sales per weekend. And her shoppers are serious: E-mail blasts alert her 4,500 regular customers to upcoming sales, where 60 to 80 early birds typically wait for the doors to open. “We used to have leftover items after a sale, but lately we’ve been completely selling out,” says
O’Neill, who charges a flat fee of $3,500 for her services, which include sorting and organizing merchandise, setting prices, advertising, and operating the sale. During the pandemic’s height, Abigail Cane of East Hampton’s 12-yearold White Goose Estate Sales, who takes on an average of 55 clients a year, enticed reticent in-person shoppers via the online platform
Auction Ninja, and Kristen Hanyo, the owner of Southampton’s Privét Estate Sales, opened a warehouse in Quogue to accommodate shoppers who can’t get enough of the Saturday morning hunt. And anything goes: During a recent teardown sale at Southampton’s Murray Place estate, buyers walked away with fish right out of the koi pond. “Some people even buy cleaning products,” O’Neill comments. “Nothing is off-limits.” —Pamela Brill Shoppers’ Paradise High turnover in the sales market has led to booming business for estate-sale companies.

ne day in 1997, while they were strolling in Sag Harbor’s historic Chatfield’s Hill neighborhood, Ludlow Beckett and Allen Harvey peeked through some overgrown brush hiding a deteriorated mid-20th-century-modern home. A tree was growing out of the swimming pool, and they noticed a small plaque that said La Dolce Vita. The couple instantly knew that this oasis overlooking the bay could be transformed into their very own slice of the sweet life. had been renting a house in the nearby community of Azurest and were looking to purchase a second home of their own. “We dug up the town records and called the owners, who lived in Harlem,” Beckett recounts. “The wife said, ‘We were just talking about what we were going to do with the house,’ and Allen said, ‘We want to buy it.’” The pair were drawn to this part of Sag Harbor for its low-key vibe. The community formed in the 1930s, when African-American families joined together to buy waterfront land near Havens Beach. (Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah—known collectively as SANS—achieved National Register of Historic Places status two summers ago.) “When we first visited,” Beckett says, “we didn’t know anyone in Sag Harbor, and one of our neighbors took us down to the black community. It was so warm and welcoming.”

Adjacent Chatfield’s Hill, also a historic black subdivision, once consisted of a sandy road leading to the top of a hill with water views. Now considerably more developed, but still blissfully sleepy, it features real estate ranging from expansive new construction to a two-car Sears kit garage, converted to a summer cottage decades ago. The original owners built the men’s home in 1962, and the couple credit them for “the bones,” including huge windows, unhoned marble walls, and a 80

Beckett and Harvey opened up the kitchen and dining area and reconfigured the bedrooms and baths, while “keeping the authenticity,” Beckett says. “We connected with the history of the house and the people we bought it from, and thought we had to preserve it.” While they strove to maintain “the simplicity of the architecture,” Harvey adds, just as important were “the views through the house, which change all year long.”

Some locals were slow to come onboard. “Contractors asked if it was maybe a school or a factory,” recounts Harvey, referring to the streamlined, whitewashed exterior. “One said, ‘Let us tear it down and build you a shingle-style traditional.’ Another suggested we brick in the windows and put in double-hungs.” But with preservation in mind, the men stuck to their guns, turning out the groovy modern masterpiece of their dreams. True to its Italian name, the house features a terraced outdoor dining space and a white-concrete lattice-walled pool bordered by huge cypress trees. Rather than Sag Harbor, it almost seems straight out of Capri, with Marcello Mastroianni leaping gracefully from the diving board. Inside, each room displays vintage and new pieces, including some left behind by the original owners, such as the living room’s circa1950s Sigurd Hansen rosewood desk on Lucite legs. “We like things simple,” says Beckett, “but enjoy updating the look and keeping it fun.” Key furnishings came from the Brooklyn shop, including the set of Milo Baughman armchairs that Harvey insisted Beckett not sell. And art fills the walls everywhere, adding depth and character. The pair favor local artists like Steve Miller and Frank Wimberley, an African-American abstract expressionist in his mid-90s who still lives in Sag Harbor Hills. Beckett and Harvey think of their time at La Dolce Vita as part of a longer legacy: As the watch commercial goes, you never actually own it, you just look after it for the next generation. “This house is simply the place where we relax and spend time with friends,” says Beckett. “We laugh when they’re on the phone saying to people that they’re in the Hamptons, because they’re not in the Hamptons. They’re in Sag Harbor. We were so fortunate to find this home.” ✹ may/june 2021

I
t’s no surprise that Gary and Sarah Wolkowitz’s white-shingled Bellport getaway resembles a chicly tailored bandbox. Founders of the 50-year-old fashion hosiery brand Hot Sox, the couple bought the 1927 home in 1980 and began transforming it into a treasured oasis for family and friends—and a fitting backdrop for an art collection gathered from their travels around the world. Photographer Bruce Weber, a longtime Bellport resident who had photographed the Wolkowitzes’ young son, Bryce, for a Polo Ralph Lauren campaign, first introduced the couple to the now-not-so-secret hamlet, perhaps the last remaining “un-Hampton.” “We fell in love with the place,” Sarah recounts. “The house sits on a gorgeous tree-lined property overlooking Great South Bay, and our bedroom has windows on all sides, so it’s like you are floating over the water. And the community is very special and small, filled with really interesting people in art, fashion, design, theater, and film.” The original owner, whose sculpting studio is now a guesthouse, left his artistic imprint in the form of handmade tiles—odes to his favorite poets—still extant on the fireplace. “The house has had many renovations over the years,” says Gary, who today oversees the Polo Ralph Lauren hosiery collection. “We set about marrying minimalism and modernism via a 1927 Colonial, and we feel we pulled that off well.” The couple collaborated with architect Michael Gabellini, whose firm, Gabellini Sheppard, had previously worked with them on their Park Avenue apartment. “Michael is a terrific architect, and we have a very similar design sensibility,” says Gary, who also charged Gabellini with “building the pool and the entire outdoor patio living structure.” The design features Bulgarian limestone that wraps around the house and creates the sensation of “living on a white platform,” as Sarah describes it, giving an extra shout-out to the talented local craftsmen who contributed to the renovations. Against the whitewashed blank canvas, artwork ranging from an Annie Leibovitz portrait of John Lennon to pencil drawings by Marcel van Eeden is on display to full effect. As Gary notes, “Our homes—here and in New York, as well as Tuscany and St. Barth—have always served as backgrounds for our collections, neutral environments that accommodate photographs, paintings, furniture, and objects.” Accordingly, the unassuming Bellport gem exudes an undeniably international quality. include a bedroom collection from Milan-based Armani Casa, an artisanal table in the living room picked up during a vacation on Mykonos, and pieces by design titan Christian Liaigre, whose Paris showroom is a reliable stop during the couple’s frequent visits to the City of Light. “The house is a compilation,” Gary muses, “so whatever you see here is some sort of footnote or testament to all the places that we have visited.” A dinner party, Sarah adds, “might feature hand-painted Greek plates, platters from San Gimignano in Tuscany, and Japanese bowls. When we fall in love with something, it’s because of its beauty and craftsmanship.” A passion for aesthetics is definitely integral to the couple’s synchronicity. “We met at the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan,” Sarah recalls of their early courtship. “I was coming from the Bronx, and he from Queens. What’s the likelihood of meeting each other at 15 and 16 and marrying six years later?” In 1971, the young Parsons School of Design graduates founded Hot Sox, in part because the 5'11" Sarah was decked out in miniskirts and hot pants but “had nothing to wear on my legs, so I went to Bloomingdale’s and thrift shops to buy oversize sweaters and cut the arms off. Gary’s grandmother in Queens had a sewing machine and put elastic around the ends to turn them into leg coverings. I called them fashion for legs, and Gary decreed them art for legs.” Artistic experimentation continues to inspire the Wolkowitzes every day. During the pandemic, Gary has photographed the sunrise each morning (the images are part of a proposed book project), and even the couple’s now-grown son, Bryce, who grew up with works by Andy Warhol and Jim Dine hanging over his crib, has become an art dealer with a namesake gallery in Chelsea. “Living in this house and in Bellport is a never-ending story,” Sarah reflects. “We are there for keeps and continue to evolve with what’s around us.”✹ may/june 2021

lawyer married to a lawyer, Kevie Murphy had been living comfortably with her husband in a Brooklyn Heights brownstone, but when she had her first child, she decided to stay home to see how she liked being a mom. “I liked it so much,” she jokes, “that I had three more kids.” When it was time to go back to work, she made yet another big change. Instead of returning to her law firm, she enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design. But during her studies, the patter of little feet started to become more like a scamper and a scuffle. The family was growing, although the brownstone was not, and suburban-sized homes with suburban yards suddenly seemed enormously appealing. The Murphys went house shopping and eventually settled on a 7,200-square-foot center-hall Colonial on a one-acre corner lot in Manhasset’s Flower Hill enclave, not far from where Kevie grew up. With six bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, the house is large enough that everyone in the family now has his or her own room. And the structure

comes with a history, too: It was built in 1940 for J. Peter Grace, one of the grandsons of William Russell Grace, who founded W. R. Grace and Company, a longtime player in the shipping, banking, and chemical industries, in 1854. The house needed a lot of work, so everything Murphy was learning at school came in very handy. “Basically, we did a gut renovation,” she recounts, “since we had to remove the original plaster walls to replace all the systems.” With the construction underway, Murphy started choosing and collecting fabrics, paint colors, and wallpapers. Her first purchase: the whimsical wallpaper in the foyer, a Pierre Frey fantasy called Jardin De Mysore, a riot of plants and animals inspired by an Indian garden. “I’m sure it’s not supposed to be used in a foyer,” she comments, “but I just love it, so I bought it. that wallpaper.” And Murphy likes color. “What am I going to do, design a 13-foot curved sofa and cover it in a beige fabric? I like beige, but things need to be fun. This house has kids living in it!” During the renovation, Murphy endeavored to make changes without disrupting the home’s original footprint. The Graces had added a conservatory with a flat wood-beamed ceiling, so Murphy raised it and gave the space a dramatic coffered dome. Elsewhere, she closed off a three-season porch to create a dressing room and closet for herself, in addition to carving out space for a home office. may/june 2021

THIS HOUSE NEEDS TO BE FUN!” Throughout the house, the attention to detail is immaculate, like the Adam-style plaster medallions she had made for the ceilings in the living and dining rooms. And while every molding, baseboard, and panel in the home is new, all revere the past. In some families, though, some things never last. “The kids already want to do their rooms over,” Murphy laments wryly. “All of a sudden, my daughter has decided she doesn’t like pink!” ✹ 102

hen Dominic Lepere and his husband, Anthony Watts, purchased their first house—a 1987 modernist-style abode in East Hampton—it was anything but turnkey. But Lepere, the owner of an eponymous home furnishings showroom in the New York Design Center, and Watts, a fashion publishing and retail industry veteran who recently launched the interior styling service Layer, don’t scare easily. “The property was a mess,” recalls Watts, with a lot that was so overgrown, adds Lepere, “you could barely even see 106

the exterior. There was peeling paint everywhere, too—it was basically what you would expect from a 1980s fixer-upper.” But the bones were there. “After 25 years together, Anthony and I agree on most things, and we knew we wanted a contemporary house that was rectilinear in shape,” Lepere continues. They also responded to the layout’s configuration: primary bedroom on one side of the house, guest rooms on the opposite, and a full lower level. “From the outside, you have no perception of the extensive interior space,” Watts

says of the four-bedroom residence, which boasts roughly 3,600 square feet across the main and lower levels. “The house reveals itself when you walk in.” The couple worked with Bridgehampton-based designer Angela Inzerillo to realize their vision of a clean-lined, modern retreat, stripping back dated interior elements, gutting the lower level, tweaking the kitchen layout, redesigning the staircase, raising ceiling heights, and rethinking the lighting scheme throughout. Indoors and out, they created several different gathering spaces, including multiple living and dining areas. (Pre–COVID-19, the pair regularly cooked for friends and hosted intimate dinner parties.) Additionally, the lower level’s
drab rec room was transformed to accommodate a study and a gym. “Angela teased that the exercise equipment would end up serving as a drying rack for our laundry, but we really do use the space regularly,” says Lepere. In fact, Watts adds, “visitors get most excited about this room—it’s very well integrated into the rest of the house.” Indeed, luxe finishes and a soothing gray palette connect both floors, with the tones on the lower level a touch warmer than upstairs. “Our running joke is that it’s 50 shades of gray,” Watts says with a laugh. The neutral color palette is ideally matched to the couple’s cool European-style aesthetic, influenced in large part by their trips to the Salone del Mobile may/june 2021

design fair in Milan (both Lepere and Watts have attended regularly in the past for work). “We are definitely minimalists,” says Lepere. “We’ve even had family and friends ask where the rest of our stuff is!” Many of the streamlined pieces come from Lepere’s showroom, which carries contemporary furniture, lighting, wall coverings, and carpets from across Europe. “In advance of showing samples and swatches from the showroom to Anthony, my colleagues and I would joke that I was preparing for a meeting with my ‘very difficult client,’” says Lepere. “The truth is, I’m the type of person who wants to exhaust every last option available on earth, whereas Anthony is a more spontaneous decision maker.” In the end, the pair had no trouble settling on a monochromatic mix that feels warm and welcoming, with the addition of a few carefully selected accessories and plants from Watts’s brand. “This house is a true reflection of both our careers,” muses Watts. “We’ve invested so much creative energy into making it a comfortable home for all seasons, and we feel lucky to have this place as our escape from the city.” ✹ 110

SUSAN’S KITCHEN
Breakfast Beauties Cornmeal scones are the perfect vehicle for fresh-picked ruby-red strawberries
STR AWBERRY CORNMEAL SCONES For the scones: ½ c. plus 1 T heavy cream or buttermilk, plus more for brushin g 1 large egg 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 c. all-purpose flour ½ c. cornmeal 2½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. kosher salt ½ c. granulated sugar ½ c. (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes Zest of 1 lemon 1 c. strawberry slices (from about 1¼ c. cleaned and hulled berries) 2 T turbinado sugar (such as Sugar in the Raw)
Combine the cream, egg, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup or small bowl and beat thoroughly with a fork. Set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Add the butter and rub it into the flour mixture with your fingers until there is nothing larger than a small pea. Add the zest and the strawberry slices, coating them with the flour, and then drizzle in the cream mixture, stirring as you go with a large fork, until the dough starts to stick together. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead a few times, incorporating any dry bits, but without squishing the berries. Pat dough into a 7-inch circle, lightly flour the top, and transfer to a wax paper–lined plate. Chill until firm, about 30 minutes (or overnight, tightly wrapped). Preheat the oven to 400°F. Brush the top of the chilled dough with more cream and sprinkle with the turbinado sugar. Cut the disk into 8 equal triangles and space them evenly on a parchment-lined sheet pan. Bake in the center of the oven for 18 to 22 minutes, turning the pan around halfway through cooking, until scones are golden brown on the top and edges. Let cool for a few minutes on the sheet pan, then transfer them to a cooling rack or a platter for serving. Serve warm, along with strawberry preserves and mascarpone, if desired. To make the optional glaze, stir together confectioners’ sugar, freeze-dried strawberries, and cream in a small bowl. Add a few drops of water as necessary until the icing is thin enough to drizzle over the scones. Makes 8. —Susan Spungen

QUINCY DAVIS
“I pretty much grew up at the beach, biking or surfing all day. Since I was about 10, we went to Puerto Rico in the winter, which definitely played a part in my love of surfing. I home-schooled in the winter and went to East Hampton High School the rest of the year. “My shop, Quincy x MTK, is a sweet little space with cedar shingles and French doors that lead to an outside courtyard. In a way, it reminds me of the surfboard shed my dad built for me—minus the French doors—and is filled with brands and products that reflect my lifestyle and that I use every day, particularly those made by female-owned companies with a strong sustainability aspect to them. Montauk is such a beautiful and special place. I feel so grateful to have grown up here, and to live and work here now.”

Note from the editor..
Welcome
Who would have thought that the world would be so pleased to see the back of 2020? It has challenged us all as we have picked our way through rules and guidance, washing hands, keeping a distance and, for me, the worst thing: no hugging!

sun isn’t shining outside, it is in my house! More designers have been inspired by nature as they have had more time to reflect on the outside – whether walking in wide open spaces or admiring your back garden and appreciating the details of the flowers on our doorstep, it makes us feel better about life and appreciate what we have. Among the positives have been taking that time to enjoy our homes, maybe meeting neighbours we didn’t know, planting vegetables for the first time, seeing those roses bloom that had gone unnoticed in our previously rushing around lifestyle and these are things we should hold on to.

Modern Country Wallpaper
Mulberry Home A timeless look that will last season after season Bringing together a collection of exciting, dynamic wallpapers, Mulberry Home’s take on ‘Modern Country’ is the perfect answer not just for cool country houses but amazing for eclectic town houses too. These are much-loved heritage designs re-imagined in brilliant new colors creating a laid-back look that is all about authentic self-expression. Modern Country conveys a love of color, pattern and unexpected scale; it makes traditional design feel original and new. These are interiors made for living in, with a timeless look that will last season after season.
Game Birds This fabulous wallpaper, with its witty name and nod to traditional British weekends in the countryside, is a strikingly fresh design about as far from country house chintz as you can get.
Flying Ducks This iconic image, showing a pair of mallard ducks in majestic flight against stylised, silhouetted trees, is one of Mulberry Home’s most celebrated patterns. Originating from the late 1920’s design it echoes the last days of the Art Deco era but has been re-imagined in exciting new colors: coral and indigo.

Graham & Brown
2021 will be a celebration of their 75 years in wallpaper design. Graham & Brown are always looking to lead the trends, and have launched their trends for 2021 with a stunning story around the colour amethyst – an elegant colour between purple and red. An uplifting, yet calming colour, full of pigment, perfect for living rooms, home offices and even your bedroom. Here in the office, we watched their on-line launch with interest and were delighted to hear Paula Taylor, their Colour & Trend Specialist give her tips for 2021. For them 2021 will be a celebration of their 75 years in wallpaper design and they are starting the celebration with this a new wallpaper design too: Timepiece in three colourway, Amethyst, Midnight and Moonstone. Timepiece in amethyst is their wallpaper pattern of the year for 2021 and is a clever combination of geometric and floral patterns, drawing on archive elements from the past 75 years to create an intricate all over effect. You can use this wallpaper either as the starting point of your room’s décor or a way of tying things together for a more edited look. Paula recommended that you use the Amethyst colourway of Timepiece with paint in shades of amethyst, for a coordinated look or you took the individual colours in the design and contrasted your paint colours perhaps using teal and soft pink, taupe shades.

“Design innovation has always been the driving force and the heartbeat of Graham & Brown throughout the years. The studio team love to delve into the pattern and print archives and discover hidden treasure that we can then reimagine with modern production techniques and new colour compositions, presenting a twist on the latest interior trends. A great deal of craftsmanship goes into the making of each archive artwork and we believe that is something to be cherished and celebrated, to be able to breathe new life into this material and let it have a new place within our history is something we love to do.” Maryanne Cartwright, Design Studio Manager at Graham & Brown We also really liked their new fantastical Magpie design, a one off colourway with jungle like leaves, nasturtium flowers and cheeky magpies, again in rich, deep colours. So along with new jungle designs, smart geometrics and a fun, houndstooth check pattern and other patterns – a rich new collection of ideas for you, to brighten your walls in 2021! by Melanie Adams
I first met Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen more than 10 years ago at the BBC Good Homes show in London and there is no doubt that he is a showman, which is essential for TV, but his passion and authenticity around color and design was also impressive and infectious. More recently we got together and talked about the idea of creating a new wallpaper range and the journey with him was fun, exciting and resulted in a beautiful creation of wallpapers which he is proud of, and I am delighted with.

Laurence is a huge fan of William Morris and as an artist himself all his work starts with a drawing. Spending long periods of time on location filming design shows, whether in Asia or Australia, allows him to view the world around him and put pencil to paper, as designers have done for hundreds of years. I was fascinated by Laurence’s ability to visualise scale and repeat which is so critical in wallpaper design. He instinctively sees how his drawings will repeat and work on a wall; he knows his craft. One of his tips about using wallpaper is to “glamoflage” the corners of a room – take the wallpaper around the corners to make the space feel larger.
The names he has given his wallpapers will bring a smile to your face. There is nothing beige about Laurence, and when he introduced his collection to our team, he left us all with an energy and inspiration to use color and design in our own homes and banish the boring! As Laurence prepares for the new season of “Changing Rooms” he has taken the opportunity to decorate the dining room and kitchen in his 400 year old Cotswold home. The fresh paisley green wallpaper Damask Dangereuse – is “a return to having more fun” – something we are all craving for after 2020. And the teaming of the fresh light green colorway of Club Tropicana with the deep, rich teal of his kitchen cabinets, is simply inspired! Laurence is an interiors ambassador, and loves to talk about color, something people tend to get a bit worried about – he believes there are a lot of “colorphobics” and he wants to inspire more people to be creative when decorating. Homes are about personality and decorating fosters so many emotions – whether it is with The Boys Are Back In Town or Pleasure Island we know you will enjoy the experience with Mr. LLB. Metropolitan Stories: When we launched the first collection of stories in 2019 we were absolutely stunned with the response from our customers, to this amazing collection of wallpapers. Inspired by cities and the young people who live in them. Their architecture, atmosphere and national passions, it was simple crammed full of designs perfect for modern homes and at an affordable price too! And so we were delighted when the new ‘very large’ collection arrived in our office for 2021. Inspired by the need to brighten all our lives, the designers have taken their inspiration this time from some of the most colorful and passionate cities around the globe. And so Barcelona is all about Gaudi color and heat, about art and culture on corners of small alleyways in this proud and lively Catalonian city.

Claire Greenfield, head of design for Harlequin says, “This exciting next chapter in the Momentum story represents a snapshot of urban life. From dusk till dawn, we’ve looked at positive and negative spaces: transposing, refracting and shattering. We’ve taken close up elements from layered leaves and flowers to add a softer, painterly aspect that contrasts against strong edges and contemporary geometrics. A broad and diverse collection, we’re blending the permanency of structures with the everchanging beauty of nature.”

Distant Shores
2
If you could go anywhere, where would you go? As we long for foreign travel, whether it be a tropical getaway or cultural city break, interiors inspired by distant shores offer calm and relaxing living spaces which make our homes feel like safe and inviting places to recharge and dream…. Drawing inspiration from different cultures brings diversity and makes a space more interesting and traveling exposes us to things we’ve never seen before. Bringing these influences home allows us to enjoy these experiences in the context of our own lives. At a time when are all looking for some escapism this trend invites us to immerse ourselves in transportive deep color: ocean hues of ultramarine where we can almost smell the saltwater air, lush jungle greens, tropical brights and warm earth tones; don’t be afraid to mix and match colors, hues and luminosity.
