AUTUMN NEWS 2017

MARC CAIN ROADSHOW We are thrilled to welcome back the Marc Cain team on the 11th September

NO SUBDUED HUES FOR AUTUMN The stunning new collections for Autumn will certainly pack a punch!

Autumn 2017

Editor’s letter Hello to Autumn! ‘Oh no’, I hear you cry, ‘we want to hang on to summer as long as possible’ and believe me, so do I. I am making the most of my summer clothes but I am getting just a little excited about what has been delivered into the shop. Designers do understand our climate and are becoming more aware of the buy it - want to wear it – trend, which is why I’m struggling to resist just the odd new addition to my wardrobe. We are thrilled to have the Marc Cain Roadshow back this autumn, with the team from Germany descending on us in September (see page 6). Of course that won’t be our only event - we have a lot to show you throughout the season so do book yourself into one (or all) of the fashion shows to get some genuine inspiration for the autumn.

us understand our obsession with body image and hopefully put into perspective and strike a balance on what we should be happy about.

Letter from Annie

I

t seems hard for me to contemplate autumn, not because it still feels summery but more to do with being in the middle of buying for summer 2018! Out of the shop my head is focused on spring and summer collections whereas inside the shop, autumn has arrived. I have to confess I am more of an autumn/winter person. I think that might have something to do with my feet or more precisely what I put on my feet. I have loved the fact that trainers have become a fashion statement and that certainly helped me this summer as I wore my Kennel & Schmenger fringe trainers to death but, come the autumn, boots are back!

4

I had a sneak preview of the shoe collections before they started coming into the shop and now that they are arriving I’m more excited than ever. Some people start their wardrobe from the top down, I definitely start mine from the feet up! It has been a busy few months with the shop team - weddings, births and a retirement! There’s been a house move within the hotel team and a new kitchen for me – I can’t believe I could be that excited about a kitchen cupboard! Lots to look forward to as well, with all our events in the shop and the hotel and I look forward to catching up with many of you at one or more of these.

“I had a sneak preview of the shoe collections before they started coming into the shop and now that they are arriving, I’m more excited than ever.”

Autumn 2017

It has been a number of years since we stocked Luisa Cerano in the shop. The brand has been through a few changes but has settled down and been producing some great collections over the last few seasons – we’ve just had to find space in order to house it!

T We are thrilled to have American brand Tommy Hilfiger join our collections this autumn.

T

ommy has been enjoying a great deal of press with the signing of top model Gigi Hadid to represent the brand as well as being the first designer to pioneer the idea of ‘see it – buy it – wear it’. His 2016 catwalk show was backed up by pop-up shops which sold the clothes that had just been seen on the catwalk.

hankfully this season we have and we are delighted to welcome it back in store. The collection gets a definite YES from us and it is a YES from Luisa Cerano as they have emblazoned the word over their sweaters! It is definitely reminiscent of the ‘80’s statement t-shirts but in a much more subtle and sophisticated way. A nod to fashion but not a slave to it. Jet black and cherry red combinations add to the stylish element with stripes and checks building interest and the fabrics, as they have always been, true quality. ‘We are so pleased we could find a home for it,’ said Rebecca. ‘It is a perfect collection to get a complete look from or to simply pick some pieces to update your wardrobe.’

Away from the glamour and the hype the collection really does stand up to the test of being a wearable, quality brand at affordable prices. ‘It is a brand that I’ve looked at for a couple of seasons to make sure that the quality of the product was good for both an autumn and summer collections,’ said Rebecca Furbank. ‘It also needed to be right for our customers. I took Annie to see the collection and she fell in love with it. It is casual and very wearable. The outerwear is like wrapping yourself in the softest of duvets.’ Along with the clothing we will be stocking the Tommy Hilfiger bags. 8

No subdued hues for Autumn

Summer 2017

Designers come up with a whole host of names to give subtle variations to a single base colour – we don’t say brown we say mocha, coffee, chocolate or cappuccino. Orange is another one they try to avoid, preferring to call it mango, burnt sienna or tangerine but I’m afraid there is no getting away from it this season because orange is a highlight! And it is orange – no subtleties, no watered down version – pure and simple orange.

T

his autumn is definitely not going to be a dull affair with bright orange, sapphire blue, bold pink and cherry red giving a real punch to the new collections. Even the gentler tones of lavender and mint green lift the mocha tones they have been paired with. It is not just about the colour. There are plenty of bold prints, from large floral displays to lots of animal antics – leopard print, tiger faces, butterflies, birds and dogs on everything from knitwear and blouses to skirts and scarves. You can’t beat a bit of animal print and, teamed with a flash of colour, it really does make a statement.

Best boot forward As autumn hits us it is time for feet to disappear again. In fact the new look for the season not only covers our feet but encases two thirds of the leg, with the super long, over-the-knee boots.

T

high high boots can look amazing both with skirts and over trousers – pulled up high above the knee. Marc Cain and Kennel & Schmenger have done the look well, keeping an elegance and shape to the boot so it is flattering on the leg. If you don’t want to go so high, Kennel and Schmenger have slightly tweaked an old favourite long boot with a suede front and elastic back which is available in black, taupe and navy. For you sporty types there is the trainer boot or check out MICHAEL Michael Kors’ cosy, furry lined, flat, ankle boots. Whatever your preference, there is a boot for you.

Are you beauty sick? In this age of social media, we are all guilty of comparing ourselves to the latest celebrities and even to our friends. And yet, when we actually talk to our friends, we find that everyone has their own insecurities about how they look – whatever shape or size they are.

Autumn 2017

Y

ou can imagine in a team of girls there are a great many tips, secrets, insecurities and joys shared in the staff room. The conversation can jump from best muffin recipes to the most tasty combinations for juicing. We’ve lived through food fads, face cream recommendations, exercise tips, joint pain and hot sweats (or as we like to call them tropical moments!). We’ve talked about muffin tops, saddle bags, bingo wings, crepey skin and how gravity is not our friend. Between the team we’ve tried big pants, killer heels, fake tan and teeth whitening. Hands up, we are guilty of being influenced by images. We are surrounded by images everyday, not only through print media but social media has made imagery even more accessible. Before the digital age we would take a photo on a camera and only see the result once you picked up your developed prints. Now we can take 20 photos and immediately decide which one is best. You can dip your chin, stand at an angle and hold your arm slightly away from your body to make it look slimmer – yes really! There was a great article in the paper the other week about a professor of psychology, who shared with her female students a survey from Esquire magazine which

14

stated that 54% of women would rather be hit by a truck than be fat. She asked the class what they thought. Rather than being scathing they asked questions like How big was the truck? How fast was it going? Her class of educated women were seriously weighing up pain and injury against being fat. We are lucky in our team of girls that there is a great support network. We can share our cellulite and vein stories and not be judged. We also see a great many body shapes, sizes and ages so we are very aware that the images we see in magazines are not necessarily realistic. We also see that clothes can look great whatever shape and size you are and you can look good whether you are 40, 50 or 60+. Age does help when it comes to being happy and content with yourself and your body. We might not like it all the time and we definitely can’t stop the process of growing older but we can embrace who we are and have a happy aura which definitely helps. One great bit of advice came from a customer who said ‘The way to feel good is to wear a smile and get a good bra!’

Celebrating in Bath Richard’s 70th birthday celebrations continued in Bath in May, when he and Annie spent two days in the beautiful city. The trip was a birthday present from the girls in the shop who bought a voucher for a fabulous book store, Mr B’s Emporium. As an avid reader Richard loved the ‘book spa’ experience where he sat with a member of Mr B’s team, talked to them about his book tastes and then they brought a selection of books he might like. ‘I completely got the concept of this unique shopping experience,’ said Richard. ‘I was in a shop that sold things that I love, talking to someone whose product knowledge was extraordinary. I went in expecting to pick a couple of books and came out with a library! I now know how you feel ladies!’

Family Challenge Survival Annie hinted at a family sporting challenge in the last magazine – a half Iron Man Triathlon at Grafham Water. Annie and Richard’s son, Jonathan, swam the first leg in Grafham Water before handing over to Richard to cycle 56 miles and Annie ran the 13 mile anchor leg to the finish. With a combined age of 183 they completed the course in an incredible 5 hours 40 minutes. ‘It was wonderful to do this as a team,’ said Annie. ‘I’m not sure what I was more nervous about, my run or Richard cycling. There were 800 competitors taking part and I was so relieved he didn’t get knocked off his bike and so happy to see him come in that I almost forgot about the changeover!’ ‘Jonathan was brilliant in the water, coming out in the top 20, so he gave us a great start. Would I do it again? Never say never.’ 18

Julie B’s fish and chip supper We all wished Julie a happy retirement with a fish and chip supper (Julie’s favourite) at The George. Richard, in his own inimitable way, summed up what we all thought and know of Julie.Think Sandra D in Grease.

Julie B Look at me – I’m Julie B – a picture of serenity, The girls are in awe as I travel the floor But I’m simply Julie B

The Little 50

Look at me – I’m Julie B – I’ve worked here for an eternity, My workmates are giants, I’m loved by my clients But I’m simply Julie B

Little Jacky became a big girl in May, celebrating her 50th birthday. As with all big events we couldn’t let it pass, so all the girls enjoyed a delicious meal at The George to wish her happy birthday.

It’s only me – I’m Julie B – always turned out perfectly My twentieth year of working here, It’s where I like to be!

Pastry chef Amina made a fabulous cake, which was partly devoured on the night but even the chocoholics among the girls couldn’t polish it all off, so there was plenty to share with Jacky’s family during her birthday weekend.

Just look at me – I’m Julie B – a shining example of loyalty, I’ll always be there to show that I care ‘Cos I’m always Julie B I’m silver blonde – I’m Doris Day – my hair has always been this way, I wash it at six, so it’s properly fixed And can’t be blown away! My face is a picture – I have to be sure – that every bit of my makeup is pure, I check every batch for a true colour match That will add to the glow and allure! Now look at me – I’m Granny B – can this be true? Can it really be?I would keep it quiet but Arthur’s a riot And he keeps asking for me! So here I am – I’m still Julie B – seeking peace and quiet, me, And I want to retire to old Bedfordshire – It should come quite naturally! But if you girls are missing me – and I’m not missed by family – I’ll do my hair and my full facial care And return here as your Julie B. 19

Notes from Helen’s Coffee Bar

“I’m certainly no barista - I leave that to the experts at The George next door who can whip up a cappuccino, latte or kick start you with an espresso.”

As titled, I do refer to the coffee bar in the shop as ‘my coffee bar’. I have to confess I also refer to all of the gentlemen that sit at the bar as ‘my lovely husbands’!’ My lovely husband at home is very understanding!

I

have known many of you for over 12 years now and each time you visit we pick up where we left off. Not only does the time fly for the partners who are shopping, it certainly flies by in my coffee bar. I’ve shared tips on rose gardening, I’ve learnt about river cruising and I’ve picked up many ideas on places to visit and West End shows to see – The Jersey Boys being a favourite (thank you John). I love having family updates and I sometimes feel like I know some of the people I have never even met. I did have a nice surprise when a couple brought in their son who was on holiday from Australia. I had heard so much about him and it was great to finally meet him. I think I am pretty good at remembering the little quirks of those who are a little more regular in how they take their coffee or tea and those that have the will power to resist a biscuit from my secret stash behind the counter!

I’m certainly no barista - I leave that to the experts at The George next door who can whip up a cappuccino , latte or kick start you with an espresso. It did get me thinking about different coffees so with a little bit of research I thought I would share some coffee knowledge: • Coffee arrived in Europe in the 17th Century • A coffee bean is a seed. The seed sits inside a cherry-like fruit. It is picked, dried, tested and not until it is roasted does it look like the beans we are all used to seeing. By the time it reaches my coffee bar it is ground and sealed and wonderfully delicious. It can also be a welcome boost to keep those energy levels up and help the enthusiasm in a support role to the shopper!

Celebrating trends It is an age-old tradition that when there is something to celebrate we do so with food and drink. How we celebrate is definitely influenced by food and drink trends.

A

fternoon tea has seen a resurgence across all ages, ‘We’ve had people celebrating their 18th and 21st birthdays at The George with afternoon tea’, said General Manager, Richard.

More formal dinner, with numerous courses has stood the test of time, with Richard Furbank doing just that for his 70th birthday - The Orangerie lends itself perfectly to this. However, a slightly more casual trend could well be making its mark. ‘I think we will see a move to ‘Cocktail Suppers’, said GM, Richard. ‘It makes things less formal as people mingle but, instead of a few bite-sized canapes the food is substantial - bowls of fish and chips, Thai curry, beef bourguignon, Tagines - all of a size that you can try two or three.’ Gin continues to be popular with customers expecting to have more than one Gin to choose from – and there really are some quite different flavours to be had. As with all fashions there is no right or wrong - fashion just opens up the options. What you ultimately choose to do has to be right for you.
