Charlotte goes
PINK!
Along with long-awaited cooler temperatures, October brings lots of PINK as we mark breast cancer awareness. Our city is full of pink ribbons, pink clothing, pink-lighted buildings, and pink fountains. We even have a Pink House! Carolina Breast Friends (CBF) is the home to survivors who act as mentors to newly diagnosed men and women in the Charlotte community. Offering over 30 programs each month—which include topics like nutrition, self-image, well-being, and medical education—the Pink House also provides wigs and prosthetics, along with other mastectomy supplies, to all breast cancer patients who walk through its door. In this issue, we introduce you to Nancy Norelli, a Myers Park resident and retired District Court Judge who has practiced law for over 40 years and is a neutral at Miles Mediation & Arbitration. A breast cancer survivor, Nancy was a “Star” in the first-ever Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte for the Pink House (2016). She is one of the 62 Charlotteans who, over the past five years, have danced to raise money for Carolina Breast Friends. Being part of a community of dancers who have raised over $3.5 million, Nancy has seen the growth and expanded outreach of the Pink House. We salute Nancy for her dedication to the Dancing with the Stars story, and we celebrate all breast cancer survivors. Mark your calendars for Dancing with the Stars of Charlotte for the Pink House’s sixth annual show on April 23, 2021, at the Knight Theater. Along with co-founders Claire Talley and Felipe Edmiston and CBF’s dedicated committee, 13 local Stars will celebrate breast cancer survivors. Before there is a cure, there is care at the Pink House. The Creeper of Queens Road It’s October and time for the reappearance of the Creeper of Queens Road! The Creeper was inspired by a similar creeper who roams a neighborhood in North Atlanta, brainchild of Joe Manus, friend of the Quarles family. The Queens Road Creeper appears each October 1 and perches in trees and sits on porches until Halloween night, when he returns to his basement home at 1700 Queens.

Cookies and Cream Marshmallow Dream Puffs
We are all missing the fun of fall harvest events, carnivals, Halloween parties, and visits to the State Fair. This recipe is an easy twist on a comfort food that gives the taste of deep-fried fun without the frying or trip to the fair. Ingredients: One can crescent roll dough (I use organic Immaculate Baking Co. 8-count tube) 8 Cookies & Cream Sandwich Cookies (I use Organic 365 mismatched cookies) 4 large marshmallows (I use Organic 365 large marshmallows) 1/4 cup milk (I use organic 1% milk) 1/4 cup powdered sugar (I use Harris Teeter Organic Powdered Sugar) Instructions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Slice the marshmallows in half with a serrated knife, round side up, across the center. Unroll the crescent roll dough. Slice the roll into 16 rounds. Flatten into cookie-sized circles. Dunk a cookie in the milk to soften, but not saturate. Place a cookie on dough, add 1/2 marshmallow on top, and seal with another piece of dough. Carefully pinch the edges together. Place on non-stick or greased pan. Repeat steps for each cookie. Bake 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Dust with powdered sugar (place the sugar into a sifter and gently sift across the tops of the puffs). Ready to serve and enjoy! To have your recipe featured in Myers Park Life, please submit to Delia at clteditor@n2pub.com.

27andYears counting! Breast Cancer Survivor Nancy Norelli The little hand reached for mine and carefully turned it palm up. Wordlessly my youngest child placed her treasured Minnie Mouse ring in my palm and closed my fingers over it. With a smile she turned and tiptoed back upstairs and into bed. Her wordless statement – Defy that silly rule. Wear this ring into the operating room tomorrow. So began my journey down the breast cancer highway with Minnie Mouse taped to my pinkie, a loving husband, and a host of amazing friends who took charge of the nitty gritty of my life, prayed endlessly, and cheered for my recovery.

The next day a mastectomy revealed 10 lymph nodes positive for cancer. My doctors recommended the “ultimate treatment,” very high dose chemo augmented by a bone marrow transplant (BMT) at Duke Medical Center. With three young children, this strong country girl easily said, “Give me all you’ve got!” I was ready. Ten days later, a Duke doctor explained the treatment—including that 10-15% of the women would die from the treatment itself. Duke would require me to go on a clinical trial, which would give me a 50-50 shot of getting the vaunted BMT treatment. The doctor landed another punch. My insurance company might not pay the $250,000 cost of the BMT. I had to either present insurance certification or a certified check for $116,000 before Duke would randomize me for the trial. I was horrified. Drawing on connections of friends and colleagues, I reached out across the country in search of a BMT without randomization. Each medical center directed me back to Duke’s trial. I was distraught. At church one Sunday the clouds of despair cleared. A youth speaker described her faith that God would take care of her when she entered a dark room. I rushed to tell my husband that I had put my life in God’s hands and trusted Him to select the right arm of the study for me. My husband chuckled because he always believed that! I was at peace. Health insurance certification was procured, and the National Institutes of Health randomized me to the non-transplant arm. At Duke
Hospital, I received high dose chemo taking my bone marrow to the limit without destroying it. I trusted God. My life was in His hands. Recovery left me with a question, “Why, Lord, did I survive?” As my prayer list exploded with names of breast cancer patients, I knew I was called to reach out to them as they faced uncertain futures and frightening treatments. Fearing for the demise of my professional life, God directed me to lead a more meaningful life, day by day, and revealed that defying breast cancer had imbued me with courage. As fear gave way to courage, I made the gutsy decision to seek an open seat on the Mecklenburg district court. Campaigning fearlessly, I explained the importance of the courts and wordlessly demonstrated that there was a life after breast cancer. My three children gathered their friends and campaigned hard. Defeat to a talented district attorney was bearable because I had defeated cancer. Governor Hunt would later appoint me to the bench. Today, daughter Lee is a sprightly mom, who still defies silly rules and loves beautiful jewelry. My children are empathetic, strong adults who face challenges with courage and grit. As a retired judge, I am blessed to continue my career at Miles Mediation & Arbitration. My promise to God remains firm. I shall never ever complain about a birthday. Joyfully, I will celebrate my 71st this month marking 27 years of survival.

What impact has the pandemic had on the real estate market? When the market slowed to a crawl in mid-March, we sat down and brainstormed potential scenarios, two of which have come to pass substantially. 1. As people quarantined in their homes for most of March and April, they started to see that their space did not work for their new lifestyles. Home offices, space for kids to spread out and learn, and swimming pools became must-haves. In many cases, people decided they needed to make a change by either moving or renovating, and we have certainly seen that in the market. 2. Urban migration is a real thing. Within weeks of the initial shutdowns, we had folks calling from big metropolitan areas around the country looking to buy in Charlotte. Many of these buyers had plans to move out of places like New York or San Francisco over the course of the next several years, and the pandemic sped up those plans. We have also seen this phenomenon play out locally as tenants in high-rise apartment buildings have opted to trade amenity-rich urban locations for a house with some outside space. How have these scenarios affected the Myers Park/SouthPark market? As has been the case for several years, demand is outpacing supply. We are seeing that across the market, but particularly in areas like Myers Park and SouthPark where inventory is very limited. In addition, interest rates are historically low, and many buyers are coming from more expensive cities, so there is not a lot of sticker shock. All this has led to significant price appreciation. The current market environment is also one of the most intricate we have seen. The pandemic has introduced new variables, and with buyers coming from so many different places, the complexities of each transaction are huge. As a buyer or seller, it’s never been more important to have an expert in your corner.
What do you expect going forward? It is hard to say what effects the pandemic will have going forward, but one story that remains consistent with years past is the influx of corporations to Charlotte from around the world. Despite the uncertainty of this year, we have seen several large companies announce moves to or growth in our area, headlined by Centene. Charlotte continues to be a place more and more people want to live. For 35 years, Cottingham Chalk has served residents in Charlotte and surrounding areas within the residential real estate industry. We believe in the importance of collaboration and building relationships with our clients, which has led to our success and fueled our growth. Buying or selling your home is a big life transition, and our team is here to help you every step of the way. precious pet By MPL Resident Reporter John McMullen
TUCK PAYNE
When Tuck was younger, he slept in his crate, but Stacy gave in and sometimes lets him sleep on the couch now. Sometimes he spends time in mom and dad’s bed too. He gets hot easily, so his favorite place to nap is on the cool hardwood floors. According to Stacy, Tuck is now the favorite child. He gets to nap with her on her king-sized bed, he gets a weekly warm bath at Pet Supplies Plus, he runs most errands with her, and recently moved from riding in the trunk of their Tahoe to the front passenger seat. Mom also likes to go through the Starbucks drive-thru to order him a “puppuccino”—whipped cream in a Starbucks cup. The Paynes give Tuck an assortment of healthy treats as well. His other favorite is a jumbo dried cow ear that used to take him hours to finish but now takes under an hour. The girls think it’s gross, but Tuck loves them. The Paynes enjoy taking Tuck to the Mint Museum dog park, especially now that the new greenway is there. They ride bikes so that they can keep up with him running around. They also love to visit farms in Monroe and near Cleveland, NC, where he can run around, and they throw bumpers in the pond for him to retrieve. A friend said about the Paynes, “I’ve never seen such a dog-centric family.” The Paynes had always been a cat family. While they love their kitty, when Tuck joined their family, it became complete. To have your pet featured in Myers Park Life, please submit to Delia at clteditor@n2pub.com. Andrew and Tuck
Meet Tuck, precious pet of the month. Tuck is a three-and-ahalf-year-old male Field Golden Retriever who belongs to Stacy, Andrew, Anne Carter, and Carolyn Payne. Carolyn had been asking for a puppy for Christmas every year, and mom and dad finally gave in. They got Tuck from a New York-based breeder who winters in South Carolina. The Paynes wanted to choose a name for their pet that held meaning relating to their family origins. Stacy’s parents lived on Friar Tuck Road in Atlanta, where Stacy and Andrew both grew up—his official name is Adirondac’s Friar Tuck. Tuck’s most notable trait is his smile. Whenever he sees his family or friends, he shows his teeth and grins. Sometimes strangers step away, and the Paynes have to tell them, don’t worry, he’s smiling! Their vet even has a tag on his chart saying, “Grinner Dog.” The family says Tuck’s personality is what you wish for in every best friend. He loves unconditionally, loves to play, and always makes them laugh. He is very smart and will always be a puppy in their eyes. Tuck is also a fantastic hunting dog with parents who are both field trial winners. He loves to play a game the Paynes call “find it,” where they hide objects in the house and ask him to find them. He never fails.

Life Insurance As An Investment
By McShane Partners President and Wealth Advisor Sandy Carlson, CFP®, CPA, CDFA™
Life insurance provides an infusion of cash for dealing with the adverse financial consequences of a loved one's death. One of the primary advantages of life insurance is that the payout is made to your beneficiaries tax-free. Since life insurance death benefits can be significant, there are advantages to purchasing a life insurance policy such as to pay outstanding debt, educating children, etc.
Caroline Fogleman, O.D.
Loan – Amounts you borrow from a non-MEC policy are generally tax-free, though tax consequences can occur upon any surrender or lapse of the policy. Surrender – When you surrender a policy for cash, any gains you have accrued are taxed as ordinary income. In addition, a loan balance may be taxable.

There are two primary types of life insurance: temporary insurance and permanent insurance. Temporary life insurance is sold as term insurance. Term insurance provides coverage for a specified period of time and you can get term protection for anywhere from 1 to 30 years. This type of coverage might make the most sense when you need coverage for a set period of time, perhaps until all of your outstanding debt is paid off or your kids graduate from college. Term insurance offers the greatest amount of coverage for the lowest initial premium, making it a good choice for individuals. However, it only pays a benefit if you die during the policy term. At the expiration of the term, the insurance policy is cancelled and no insurance remains in place. Permanent life insurance, on the other hand, stays in effect for as long as you pay the premiums. This means that you never have to worry about uninsurability or losing your insurance coverage as you get older. A permanent policy is more complicated than term insurance. However, these policies have one clear distinction from term insurance, they build cash value. Cash value is an investment-like product coupled with the insurance policy. Each month, when you pay premiums, the payments generally go to three places: to pay for the cost of insurance; to pay for policy fees; and lastly, a portion will go into a tax-deferred savings account, or the cash value of the policy. The cash value account grows tax-free, based on the interest or investment gains it earns. One of the reasons to buy cash value life insurance is to have access to the money that builds up within the policy. Any cash accrued within the policy can be withdrawn to pay for personal expenses, or as a supplement to your retirement income. The downside to permanent insurance is that the initial premiums you pay for insurance are much higher than those for the same amount of coverage with a term policy. What are the tax consequences of life insurance cash value? You can do several things with your life insurance policy cash value, including withdraw it, taking out a loan or use it to continue to fund the policy. How you use your policy cash-value will determine the tax impact. Withdrawal – Unless you have a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC), withdrawals up to your policy’s investment in the contract are generally tax-free. Your investment is generally the total amount of money you have paid in premiums. Withdrawals beyond your investment are generally taxable unless they are in the form of a loan.
32 Myers Park Life • October 2020
Withdrawals and loans will reduce the death benefit and the cash surrender value, and may cause the policy to lapse. Lapse or surrender of a policy with a loan may cause the recognition of taxable income. Withdrawals in excess of the cost basis, or premiums paid, will be subject to ordinary income tax. Conclusion Insurance companies typically sell permanent policies not only as a way to leave a financial legacy to your heirs, but also as a good investment vehicle. While permanent life insurance may be considered as a part of your retirement savings strategy, for the vast majority of individuals there will be other, more attractive options to use before choosing this alternative. For most, an employer’s 401(k) should be the first choice, especially if there is an employer match. Once the 401(k) has been maximized, IRA and Roth IRA accounts should be considered. For very-high-income individuals who have maxed out these options, a permanent insurance savings strategy can make sense, especially if there is a need for life insurance. If life insurance is not needed, it is possible to find less expensive investment options outside of a life insurance product. ing path. Combining elements of both old and new, the Chelsea Drive project reflected the family’s vision. Adding light fixtures that were industrial in some areas and more feminine in others told a story. Our client has a passion for cars and motorcycles; his light selections were reflective of that. The lighting selected by his wife echoed her love for the arts and nature. The fabrics for covering both the furniture and windows all complimented the painting and the clients’ love of lavender. Schumacher’s Pearl River fabric echoed the family’s heritage. The accent hardware for the built-ins, by Addison Weeks in Rose Quartz, pair well with acrylic-paneled barstools covered in snakeskin, bringing an edgy glamour to the space. Making plans for a custom renovation starts small, but through the design process the layers of details evolve. Floor plans, architectural drawings, and renderings create living spaces designed specifically for the family with the vision of their dreams. At Urban Building Group, this process begins months ahead of breaking ground. We spend hours with our clients determining what the hierarchy is for living well within the new walls of their home. Once the floor plans and the architectural drawings are complete, we begin the selection process. Our design team meets with each client to select stone, tile, plumbing fixtures, and custom cabinetry—making sure all the elements are cohesive and in the budget. Our designers take color direction from the stone and tile selections—choosing custom colors for most of our cabinetry. The decorative cabinet hardware complements the plumbing fixtures or nods to the upcoming lighting selection. It’s a bit of a domino effect; each part creating the next and a continuous stream of decision making. Our experienced design team can take the stress out of the equation with their knowledge of products, performance, design, and aesthetic. With our recent Chelsea Drive project, the homeowners’ art collection led the direction for most of the interiors. A large scale Geoffrey Johnson painting purchased from Shain Gallery would hang on the dominant wall of the open floor plan in the kitchen and family room.

When stay-at-home orders went into place in March, many nonprofits had to pivot and adjust their fundraising efforts for the spring. Women of Vision Charlotte was no exception. After months of planning our 20th Anniversary Fundraising Auction and Dinner, the challenging decision was made to cancel the April 2 event. But that didn’t deter this group of women who care passionately about women and children living in poverty around the world from still raising over $230,000! The Charlotte Chapter of Women of Vision was started in 2000 by a group of 22 women who wanted to make a difference in ending extreme poverty around the world. By partnering with the work of World Vision, the international Christian relief organization, WOV Charlotte came together to GIVE, ADVOCATE, LEARN, and SERVE in support of World Vision’s transformational work. Over $4 million has been raised in the past 20 years to lift women, children, and families out of poverty in areas as far away as Ethiopia and as close to home as West Charlotte. We are a dynamic group of women passionate about educating our partners about issues facing the poor and oppressed locally and throughout the world. Child labor, early childhood marriage, female genital mutilation, obstetric fistula, and lack of education are just a few of the many topics this group has addressed over the years. Partners are also actively advocating for justice and foreign aid through prayer, meeting and contacting local representatives, and through bi-annual trips to Washington, DC, to meet with US government representatives in support of legislation that benefits the poor and oppressed. Although meetings will be virtual this fall, WOV Charlotte will continue to gather to learn about clean water and economic empowerment in Honduras, the challenges faced by families living in Syrian refugee camps, and our newest project in Kenya which focuses on reducing the harmful practices of child marriage and illegal female genital mutilation, practices which historically have crushed the hopes and futures of Kenya’s young girls. WOV Charlotte welcomes new partners interested in learning about the causes of extreme poverty, encouraging one another to be agents of social justice, and raising funds to alleviate suffering around the world in the name of Christ. A Journey to Better Health Local Authors Release Healthy Living for a Sharper Mind Dr. Hayes Woollen, an experienced primary care physician and founding chair of Memory and Movement Charlotte, and Cheryl Hoover, a registered pharmacist and certified plant-based nutritionist, have teamed up to write Healthy Living for a Sharper Mind, a clinicians’ guide to lowering your risk of Alzheimer’s disease and improving your overall health. As Dr. Chuck Edwards, founding physician of Memory and Movement Charlotte, states, “They have combined science with sound nutritional advice that can make us healthier for a lifetime.” A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that we all have the ability to reduce our risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease and dramatically improve our overall health and fight off threats like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even cancer. This book translates the very best of brain science into recommendations for your everyday life. It teaches you how to use delicious, nutrient-dense foods as medicine for promoting a healthy mind and body, with innovative recipes that integrate the super-foods you love into your everyday diet to activate your body’s defense systems. The comprehensive plan in their book will reduce the levels of inflammation in your body, help you lose weight, reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s and other serious disease, and ultimately, improve your overall health. You may be surprised to learn that research has shown that Alzheimer’s disease is not a disease of the elderly, but is actually a disease of middle age, starting 20 and sometimes 30 years before any symptoms are noticed. The great news is that the progression of this disease can be significantly reduced by our lifestyle choices. Dr. Edwards sums it up best. “We know now that Alzheimer’s disease is a slow process that occurs over decades… and it is dependent not only on genes and family history, but on how one lives his or her life.” This book is designed to help people lose weight, boost their energy, reduce their levels of inflammation, and most importantly protect their hearts and their brains. Whether you will develop Alzheimer’s disease can be influenced by your genes and your family history. But scientists now know that these genes can be dramatically influenced by the lifestyle choices you make every day. This book gives a clear and science-based roadmap to better understand the risk factors associated with Alzheimer’s disease and the changes we can make to our life to significantly reduce those risk factors. Good luck in your journey to better health! Healthy Living for a Sharper Mind is available for purchase at Barnes & Noble, Park Road Books, and on Amazon.

One thing that surprised Erin and Andy was the significant amount of commerce that takes place on the rivers. “Although parts of the trip were very remote, the number of ships carrying containers was astounding,” they recall. Their second day on the water included cruising all day, crossing onto the Mississippi River and arriving in St Louis, MO. “It was the most incredible thing to see the Gateway Arch from the water,” Andy says. Eventually, they docked at Grafton Marina. The next morning, they began their journey to Mark Twain’s hometown of Hannibal, MO. When they arrived in Hannibal, they realized the marina had been torn down and had to get creative with docking, all with the support of a local fisherman named Smoov. To get into the town itself, they had to hike through the woods and down the railroad tracks. They visited the local museum and popped into a local store for a cold beverage before heading back to the boat. They continued their travels to Rockport, IL, where they spent the night at Two Rivers Marina. On their last day on the water, they headed back to Grafton, IL, to spend the night at the same marina as before. While there, they took a gondola ride to the

top of Aerie’s Resort and Winery. “We got to see the most incredible views of the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers as well as their beautiful ‘Old Glory’ — an 80-foot by 40-foot American Flag.” The final leg of their adventure included flying back to Charlotte from St. Louis. Although the trip was an amazing adventure, Erin and Andy said the trip wasn’t without its challenges. They were responsible for all meals, with limited storage on board, and had to become innovative. Additional challenges included timing of the numerous locks, determining where to dock at night, and running out of gas. Overall, it was clearly worth it. “It was so relaxing to sit on the bow of the boat with the sun on our shoulders and the wind in our hair. We didn’t have a set schedule or a care in the world. Everything drifted away while we were on the water. Life is good!!!”

The lock going from Kentucky Lake to the Tennessee River
By MPL Contributing Writer Amy Wartham
America’s Great Loop has been called “the last great adventure in North America,” and it’s gaining in popularity as hundreds of boats follow the 6,000-mile continuous waterway route every year. The Great Loop takes boaters up the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, continues onto the Hudson River to the Erie Canal and through the Great Lakes. From there it travels down the inland rivers to the Gulf of Mexico, and around Florida. It’s considered the trip of a lifetime! Erin Duke and Andy Pressley got to experience part of the Great Loop in June, and it’s a trip they won’t soon forget. Erin says, “We feel so blessed to have had this extraordinary opportunity. Our weather was perfect and it was simply amazing seeing how beautiful our country is.” They began their adventure by flying to Nashville, TN, and taking an Uber ride to Pebble Isle Marina, where they boarded a 48-foot Sea Ray Sun Dancer that was docked in New Johnsonville, TN. They joined three other friends and their captain and began their journey on Kentucky Lake. After cruising four hours, they arrived at the Kentucky Dam Lock. They entered a canal lock where the water and their boat were lowered about 60 feet in 20 minutes. When the gates opened, they were in the Tennessee River. They continued to cruise the Tennessee River and then crossed into the Ohio River where they anchored overnight near Cape Girardeau, MO. October 2020 • Myers Park Life

The “Grande Dame” of Myers Park Granville Condo Building Turns 100! community news By MPL Content Coordinator Delia McMullen

One of the building’s entrances
A special Myers Park building is turning 100 this year! Located at the intersection of Hopedale Avenue, Granville Road, and Queens Road West, the familiar building has no official name, and residents’ addresses are either on Hopedale or Granville. Current owners call the building a “hidden gem” and “the best-kept secret in Myers Park.” Lynn Lau, who is known as the “matriarch” of the building, has lived there for 15 years. The most long-term resident, however, is Beverly Lee, a local Realtor who has lived in the building for 30 years. Beverly recognized the beauty of the space and combined two units years ago. The units were built as high-end apartments in 1920. While the architect and builder are unknown, the building features a brick exterior with balconies/porches and distinctive roof accents. The interiors boast nine-foot ceilings, deep crown molding, hardwood floors, and other special touches – all beautifully designed and maintained. There is very little turnover, which speaks to the popularity of this special address. Most sales of condos are a result of word of mouth. When Lynn decides to sell, she already has five younger friends interested in purchasing her unit! About 50 years ago, during the 1970s, the building fell into disrepair. It was known as a “party place” for divorcees to live. At that time, the building was converted to condos. It is now nine units, with different floor plans (studio, one- and two-bedroom) and amenities. Pre COVID-19, residents would gather for a glass of wine on the lawn, to watch 24 Hours of Booty, or to celebrate the holidays. Beverly recalls evenings on the lawn when all would convene for dinner and drinks. One snowy evening years ago, Beverly and other residents counted the number of incidents that occurred as cars slid down the hill on Hopedale into the intersection with its four-way stop sign. “I think we were up in the 20s in a matter of a couple hours,” recalls Beverly, “but fortunately no one was injured.” Beverly also has fond memories of Bob King, a Charlotte attorney who has now passed away. Bob owned a unit in the building but did not live there. As Beverly remembers, “He diligently attended all meetings and was very much a part of our HOA. He always called me Madame President. He and his wife Anne were beautiful people and a beautiful couple.” “We are almost like a family,” explains Lynn. “We see each other in our pajamas taking out our trash. As residents come and go, they are brought into the fold.” The newest resident is also the youngest. As the building marks this 100-year milestone, the residents look forward to the days when they can gather again and toast their unique address!
