EXERCISE 1 Concentrating on fanning motions, the piece exlpores directional influences, through the manipulation of planar, linear, and volumetric materials.

EXERCISE 2 Essentially folding in on itelf, the pavillion centers itself on continuous folds, and resultantly, continuous movemenT. Starting the sequence of events on the ground floor, movement within the project is guided through all major orifices, and thus, allows exploration as well as leisure.

EXERCISE 3 Built in 1998 by Rem Koolhaas and OMA, the Maison à Bordeaux, in Floirac, France, remains one of the most innovative architectural buildings of the 1990’s. Commissioned for a family whose husband had recently been paralysed, the building and its concept aims to allow a free and architecturally complex space for the Lemoine family.
9
With the intention of making sure the husbands paralysis did not define his surroundings, the layout for each individual floor of the building remains drastically different. With the first floor being essentially carved out of the hillside, the layout renders it semi-private, with half remaining within solid walls, and the other half remaining an open courtyard. In contrast, the second floor is virtually nonexistent, being entirely composed of glass, and thus, remaining an open, and free space. Cantilevering on the second floor, the third and final story contrasts both floors with both the spatial and volumetric divisions. Encased within a steel ‘sleeve’, which also serves to provide structural integrity to enable the cantilevering aspect, the third floor houses the bedrooms for the family. 10
Although three distinct spaces, a central elevator connects the entire building. Designed to be a floating room, the elevator serves to challenge the spatial dynamics of the building, while at the same time connecting each individual element. In connecting the structure through vertical circulation in contrast to horizontal circulation, the building challenges the concept of universal design.

EXERCISE 4 Designed around the concept of interlocking spaces, the structure aims to influence and guide movement, through the use of visual and physical catalysts. Moreover, the concept of interlocking spaces is further applied to the exterior, in connecting the otherwise isolated modules, with geometric curves.
