Heritage Open Days Return

Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of heritage and culture. Every September across the country organisations and volunteers organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture that you can access for free! It’s also an opportunity to see hidden places or try new experiences. The theme this year is Edible England, so you can expect food related events and activities alongside tours and open days. The festival is now in its 26th year and has grown from 701 events nationwide to over 5,500 today.
Thetford has taken part in Heritage Open Days for many years, reflecting the rich and diverse cultural heritage we have as a town. This year you can discover how the Women’s Voluntary Service (WVS) supported the town during WW2. Christine Sanderson, pictured on our front cover this month, is a costumned interpreter and can be found giving a talk on 11th September at Leaping Hare. Also featured are our links to the Sikh community, food and drink history, foraging tips, industrial heritage and our local links to atomic weapons.
