LETTER FROM

ADAM PHILIPSON

President & CEO, Count Basie Theatre

Dear Friends, Spring is upon us and so is the Basie’s annual influx of outstanding shows. From the Pretenders to Broadway presentations like “Rent,” to magician Criss Angel or the Basie Summer Jazz Fest, we have more than 50 presentations to light up the stage before July 4th weekend. We have also announced our annual summer gala, this year starring “Hamilton” TONY® winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and honoring the Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation and our board member, Jeremy Grunin. We hope you will join us for this important fundraiser. On the walk in, you may have noticed some construction and a huge hole at the corner of Monmouth and Pearl streets. That’s our future -- construction on our facility’s long-awaited expansion is finally underway! Pardon our appearance and the dust, but please know that the end result will be New Jersey’s premier destination for the performing arts and arts education. This work will include modernizing our stage and production facilities, so we’ll have to take some of the summer off. However, we’ll take that time to present Basie-quality performances in venues throughout the region. Keep your eyes on theBASIE.org to learn what “Basie Presents” shows are coming to your neck of the woods this summer. We appreciate your patronage and patience as we embark on our journey towards becoming the performing arts center our region deserves – one that promises to be an epicenter of education, entertainment and enlightenment for decades to come.

With a career that encompasses five Grammys, numerous chart successes and personal and professional accolades, as well as collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent artists, Michael McDonald remains an enduring force in popular music. Hailing from St. Louis, McDonald arrived in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, honing his talents as a studio musician before becoming an integral part of Steely Dan. In the mid-’70s McDonald was invited to join the Doobie Brothers as the band redefined their sound with McDonald serving as singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.” Throughout the ’80s and ’90s McDonald’s solo career took off with a string of hits including “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near),” “Sweet Freedom,” “On My Own” (with Patti LaBelle) and the Grammy-winning James Ingram duet “Yah Mo B There.”

ART GARFUNKEL May 16 • 8PM

Blessed with what the New York Times described as a “beautiful countertenor,” singer Art Garfunkel has made an indelible mark on the music world as both a solo artist and half of the unrivaled Simon & Garfunkel. He has also enjoyed a successful film career, published a book of poetry and released 12 solo albums, the most recent being 2007’s Some Enchanted Evening. Since then, he has been busy as a husband and father to his two sons, 26 year-old James and 11-year-old Beau Daniel. He is also an avid walker who has walked across Japan, the US (celebrated in the 1997 concert DVD, Across America) and now Europe. Art Garfunkel was originally revered for his Grammy-winning, chart-topping songs and albums with partner and fellow NYC native Paul Simon. Their greatest hits collection, which includes “Mrs. Robinson,” “Scarborough Fair,” “The Sound Of Silence,” “The Boxer” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” among others, is one of the biggest selling albums ever. DAVID FOSTER Hitman Tour Saturday, April 7 • 8PM

“I believe that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to Round Three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I’m going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his four-decade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually.

They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fan base, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T RODRIGUEZ April 9 • 8PM

Rodriguez, the legendary singer-songwriter known only by his surname, is a self-taught guitarist. He began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered postindustrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Fact in 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971 released on Sussex records. These recordings went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family. In the late 1990s, South African fans finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career. Their story is told in the 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, directed by Malik Bendjelloul , which has given Rodriguez a new measure of fame in the U.S. with his music and story now reaching audiences worldwide.

THE DECEMBERISTS

with special guest M. Ward June 12 • 8PM The Decemberists explore a new sound with a new producer on their inspired eighth studio album I’ll Be Your Girl, which was released March 16 on Capitol Records. The acclaimed Portland, Oregon-based band worked with producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Lana del Rey) and embraced influences such as Roxy Music and New Order to spark a new creative path, as can be heard on the synth-driven lead single “Severed,” which is available today to stream or download. “When you’ve been a band for 17 years, inevitably there are habits you fall into,” says Colin Meloy. “So our ambition this time was really just to get out of our comfort zone. That’s what prompted working with a different producer and using a different studio. We wanted to free ourselves from old patterns and give ourselves permission to try something different.”

MAX RAABE & PALAST ORCHESTER April 10 • 8PM

In April 2018 Berlin-based Max Raabe & Palast Orchester will be crossing the Atlantic with their critically acclaimed show “Let’s Do It.” It may seem unusual that a German band tours the home territory of the American Songbook with a program stacked with standards like “Stormy Weather,” “Over My Shoulder” or “Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf,” but Max Raabe & Palast Orchester have their own charming way of interpreting the original arrangements. They take a classical approach, put thought into every musical phrase and then let the music flow. A wonderful contrast to these melodies well known to American and Canadian audiences are the German counterparts written in the late 20s. Hilarious songs like “When I need love, I go to Pauline,” romances like “Women are so beautiful when they love” and classics like Kurt Weill’s “Bilbao Song” are cleverly woven into a highly entertaining evening that builds bridges over time and space.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top-performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glasslined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.

In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son. In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the EStreet Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. And today, the Count Basie Theatre has embarked on a $20 million capital campaign, with the aim of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. A building dedicated to the Basie’s education programs and Performing Arts Academy will be constructed, which will also house an all-new second venue. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, an outdoor arts plaza and more. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Theatre aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T THE EVERLY BROTHERS EXPERIENCE Featuring the Zmed Brothers Sunday, May 6 • 3PM

In January of 2016, brothers Zachary and Dylan Zmed (acoustic guitars/vocals) and their partner (drummer in the group) Burleigh Drummond began developing The Everly Brothers Experience show. Since then they have celebrated the pivotal sounds of The Everly Brothers music with enthusiastic crowds all across the US and over seas in iconic clubs, theaters, performing arts centers, casinos, ballrooms, and coliseums. The Zmeds say, “Our aim is to honor the aesthetics of their iconic sound and honor their unique place in music history all while telling our own personal story,” and they do just that. Growing up with a father, (Adrian Zmed) as a traveling singer/ dancer/actor, and a mother (Barbara) as a second grade teacher in Southern California, the Zmed Brothers continually strive to pay homage to their roots by always infusing an instinctual blend of entertainment and education in their show.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T PAUL ANKA

Celebrating 60 Years of Hits – His Way May 7 • 8PM From an early age Paul Anka had a dream to make it as a singer and composer. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mothers car, unbeknownst to her of course. In 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records. He played him a batch of songs that included “Diana”– Costa was duly enthusiastic about the potential of the young singer and songwriter. The rapid and enormous success of “Diana”- his first number one hit – made him a star.

DAVID FEHERTY Live Off Tour June 14 • 7:30PM

How do you describe the offbeat antics of David Feherty? The New York Times called him “a cross between Oprah Winfrey and Johnny Carson.” With a sharp wit and irreverent style, the professional golfer turned golf analyst, talk show host and sports broadcaster has made a name for himself as one of the most hilarious and irrepressible personalities in golf. Of Feherty’s live one-man show, Golf Digest said: “Uncensored and unhinged, and worth the price of admission. It really was stupendous.” The Pittsburgh PostGazette raves, “David Feherty was uproariously funny. It was two hours of zaniness and madcap storytelling. People were coming out of their seats with laughter.” David Feherty is a former professional golfer on the European Tour and PGA Tour. He now works as a writer and broadcaster with NBC Sports and Golf Channel.

THE FUTURE BASIE: Construction has begun!

It’s official: Ground is broken, and construction has begun on the Count Basie Theatre’s much-anticipated expansion. The project will double the size of the Basie facility, transforming the theater into a block-long creative campus. As we speak, development of our “West Side” is underway, with excavation and construction set to create the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts And Education Building, which will house a new, second venue and modern classroom and rehearsal spaces. Over the summer, new technologies and amenities will move into place backstage, allowing us to accommodate larger productions and attract more world-class artists and performances. Moving onward, our “East Side” work will include a new, glass-walled lobby, fronted by the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion and a spacious public arts plaza, pictured above. Construction will take approximately 20-24 months. Basie Renovation and Restoration co-chairs Steven Schultz and Stephen Cutler have overseen NK Architects of Morristown’s design of the project, along with Ben Harvey Construction of Long Branch and M. Silberstein Interior Design of Shrewsbury. “We are delighted to break ground today on the expansion and updating of the historic Count Basie Theatre,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees. “It is a momentous day, and one that could not have happened without the support of many people and organizations. Particular thanks are due to the Grunin Foundation and my fellow board member Jeremy Grunin, plus Citi, the Asbury Park Press, Nancy Mulheren, Carol Stillwell, Maryann Larkin, Maggie Riker, Mark and Karey Hogan, Mark and Denise Rohl, and many others in making significant gifts to this campaign.”

THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND WITH SPECIAL GUEST THE OUTLAWS Friday, September 21 • 7:30PM

In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. For The Outlaws, it was always about the music. For 40 years, the Southern Rock legends celebrated triumphs, endured tragedies and survived legal nightmares to remain one of the most influential and best-loved bands of the genre. Now The Outlaws return with new music, new focus and an uncompromising new mission: It’s about a band of brothers bound together by history, harmony and the road. It’s about a group that respects its own legacy while refusing to be defined by its past. But most of all, it’s about pride.

The workshop includes scene work with partners and promises to take your acting techniques to the next level. 11:30AM-1PM AGES: 12-16 • $40 INSTRUCTOR: NICOLE CLARK

Here’s a perfect workshop to test the waters and see if you’re really ready to dive into the basics of being an actor. Here, you’ll cover script work, character building, stage techniques, vocal projection and theatrical terminology for beginners. And who knows… maybe the acting bug will bite! 11:30AM-1PM AGES: 7-9 • $40 INSTRUCTOR: MARJORIE ENERSON

First it was a comic… then a hit on TV… then silver screen fodder, and now a Broadway Blockbuster! SpongeBob Squarepants provides the theme for this weekend workshop, which uses a variety of found objects and sponges to create undersea characters and develop a session-ending undersea adventure. Great fun and a good way to get those imaginations flowing! 11:30AM-1PM AGES: 6-8 • $40 INSTRUCTOR: MARJORIE ENERSON

As one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, “The Tales of Peter Rabbit” teaches young readers five important lessons: listen to your mother, drink Chamomile tea for what ails you, never give up, eat your veggies… and DREAM BIG! These timely messages will set the mood for this creative theatre adventure. 11:30AM-1PM AGES: 4-6 • $40 INSTRUCTOR: MARJORIE ENERSON

Celebrate The 50th Anniversary of The Beatles “White Album” performed in its Entirety Saturday, June 16 • 8PM Featuring: The Hogshead Horns, The Creme Tangerine Strings, Jim Boggia & Erin Hill With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music with unwavering respect, and are known for their painstaking recreations of the songs. Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Imagine hearing complex material like “Strawberry Fields Forever” or “I Am the Walrus” performed in complete part-perfect renditions; or such harmony-driven songs as “Because,” “Nowhere Man,” and “Paperback Writer,” reproduced not only note-for-note, but with extra vocalists to achieve a double-tracked effect.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T PRETENDERS June 28 • 8PM

‘It’s good to hear the Pretenders again.’ – It was these simple words that heralded the unforeseen return of the greatest group on the planet. In a nutshell: Chrissie Hynde was working on a solo project with the Black Key’s Dan Auerbach in his Nashville studio, organically recording the follow up to her 2014 album, the superb Stockholm. The new record had been tentatively entitled Chrissie Hynde Practices Her Autograph. Then it dawned that those driving guitars, raggedbut-righteous arrangements, the tough yet tender lyrics delivered by the most distinctive voice of a generation sounded fantastically familiar. Ultimately, this could only mean one thing: The Pretenders were back. And this wasn’t a cynical brand reboot, more a happy accident. Chrissie Hynde shrugs, still as cool as the other side of the pillow; “These things happen. It’s just a name.” Having effectively reformed her ground-breaking band, Hynde decided to rechristen the record.

Whistle Down The Wind is out on March 2 via Bobolink/ Razor & Tie Records. Rolling Stone calls the album “a moving reflection and summation of Baez’s life as a singer, musician and activist.”

The show must go on! 2 West River Road, Rumson 732-530-6543

The Basie’s popular junior theater program flies to Neverland, where young actors will take on the roles of Wendy, John, Michael, Hook, Peter Pan himself… maybe even Tick-Tock Croc! This audition-based program teaches participants the importance of collaboration and the collective development of beloved characters who – of course – never want to grow up.

Live on the Basie stage May 30
