LETTER FROM
MAUREEN AND STEVEN VAN ZANDT Honorary Campaign Chairs
We are the only country in the world that considers art a luxury. Everybody else (being around a lot longer) understands art to be an essential part of the quality of life. A community’s art is a big part of its identity, and the degree by which it supports its arts is part of how it is measured. The Count Basie Theatre, called the Carlton Theatre back in the day, has a special place in our lives. Maureen spent most of her childhood summers at the Jersey shore, where she frequented the theatre seeing countless shows, and later went on to dance in The Nutcracker on the Basie stage. It was my local theater growing up. It’s where I saw A Hard Day’s Night and watched the young girls run down the aisles compelled by their uncontrollable passion to attempt to kiss the Beatles! I can still remember the amazingly rich colors flowing off the screen in Jerry Lewis’ The Nutty Professor, being quite a revelation compared to our black and white TVs. Looking back now it wasn’t very local - having to come all the way from Wilson Avenue in New Monmouth - but Red Bank was our closest “big town.” Just up the street at Jack’s Music is where I bought my first guitar. We hope to see the Count Basie Theatre expand into a regional center for the performing arts, which every community needs. The arts remain the first and best opportunity for communication between the races, genders, religions, and age groups. As the chaos and strife increases in the world, it is the one consistent inspirational and motivational sanctuary. The Count Basie Theatre’s expansion into a true, regional center for the performing arts will be an example for other communities to follow, nationwide, and worldwide. Maureen and I are dedicated to doing everything possible to support it.

This highly-anticipated new hour of skepticism follows up Sebastian’s 2014 Showtime standup special and DVD “Aren’t You Embarrassed?” in which he offered up his witheringly sarcastic and exasperated take on modern behavior and etiquette.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665
and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. Punctuating the show is a vibrantly expansive version of Hornsby’s early hit “The Way It Is” and a performance of “White Wheeled Limousine,” and to sum up the free-spirited nature of their collaborations, Skaggs and Hornsby joyfully present the vintage fiddle tune “Cluck Ol’ Hen.”

fabled HBO series, The Sopranos – joined on as board members, and then honorary chairs for the campaign. “We are the only country in the world that considers art a luxury,” the Van Zandt’s noted early on. “We hope to see the Count Basie Theatre expand into a regional center for the performing arts, which every community needs.”
Just like that, the Basie is closer than ever to realizing its vision of a true, regional center for the arts and education You’re reading that headline and singing Bon Jovi’s “Living On A Prayer” -- but with more than $10 million raised in just over a year, the Count Basie Theatre is truly halfway through its $20 million expansion campaign.
At a press conference in November, the Van Zandt’s returned to the Basie stage to announce the halfway mark and that a new series of concerts – Little Steven’s Underground Garage At The Basie Presented By Citi – would help take the campaign to even higher plateaus.
Announced in October 2015, the Basie’s “The Future Is Now” campaign was a visionary undertaking: the plan to transform the 90-year old facility into a regional center for the arts would increase its education and outreach programs, build a second venue for emerging talent, and provide space for other arts-related nonprofits in the area.
“Citi has a long tradition of offering music and providing premium access to our cardholders,” said Ralph Andretta, head of U.S. branded cards, Citi. “Music is in our DNA. We’re here with the

Basie and the Van Zandt’s to make this theatre the premier location for arts and arts education in New Jersey.” “Steven’s series of performances will serve as a vehicle to broaden the Basie’s commitment as a cultural and educational destination for the performing arts,” said Tom Widener, Chairman of the Basie’s Board of Trustees. “These valued partnerships will serve as the foundation when our vision of expansion comes to fruition.” Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, no stranger to the Basie, echoed her approval. “For every penny you put into the arts in this state, you get a dollar back. Whatever we put into (the Basie) we will get back in spades.”

Chairman Widener also took the occasion to thank the campaign’s seven biggest donors: Citi, the Asbury Park Press, and philanthropists Mark and Carey Hogan, Maggie Riker, Nancy Mulheren, Mark and Denise Rohl, Carol Stillwell and Maryann Larkin. In all, more than 100 gifts have been contributed to the expansion effort. “We have demonstrated this level of success without there being a hole in the ground, which clearly demonstrates that the community is behind us,” Basie President and CEO Philipson concluded. “With some additional support, we could be breaking ground in July.”

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T BUDDY GUY May 17 • 8PM
At age 79, Buddy Guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. In 1957, he took his guitar to Chicago, where he would permanently alter the direction of the instrument, first on numerous sessions for Chess Records playing alongside Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the rest of the label’s legendary roster, and then on recordings of his own.
GET THE LED OUT
The American Led Zeppelin Friday, May 19 • 8PM
From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. Utilizing the multiinstrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album…GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants…a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity.
