LETTER FROM

YVONNE LAMB SCUDIERY Vice President, Education

Dear Friends, As the Count Basie Theatre’s Vice President of Education, I’d like to wish everyone a Happy 2018! From our main stage productions and popular school shows to our Performing Arts Academy workshops, seminars and classes, our goal is always to make the arts accessible -- but also to deepen our community’s appreciation and understanding of the innate value of the arts. On a daily basis, dozens of aspiring actors, singers, dancers and musicians gather in the Basie’s classrooms and performance spaces, where they learn the importance of teamwork, collaboration, focus and self-discipline. Many of our students are here to have fun and make friends. Others are here because they have found their passion, and their sights are set on a career in the arts. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy encourages artists to pursue their goals, with the tools and instruction important in becoming a pro. The Basie offers students with unparalleled visibility, including opportunities to celebrate our culture and meet with professionals in the field. Through the generosity of our funders, the Basie is able to touch the souls and enrich the lives of thousands of children and adults. Just think of how many more lives we’ll impact as the Basie expands and we open the Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, which will provide additional classrooms and rehearsal and performance spaces. Additional information about the Basie’s Performing Arts Academy, partnership programs, the annual Basie Awards, and our new collective impact program, mindALIGNED, is available at theBASIE.org/education. Tonight, you’ll experience something special on the Basie stage. Tomorrow, our classrooms will be filled with excited students, our halls will be alive with music, and our mission to promote the arts will continue. In 2018, the Basie resolves to continue its work in enriching communities and classrooms through the arts. These programs are a tremendous source of pride for our board members, employees, teaching artists, parents and students alike. On behalf of the entire Basie family, here’s to a happy and healthy New Year.

Yvonne Lamb Scudiery Vice President, Education

JASON ISBELL AND THE 400 UNIT with special guest James McMurtry February 5 • 8PM

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit’s new album, The Nashville Sound, is a beautiful piece of American music-making, but watch yourself: it will light a fire under your ass. “You’re still breathing, it’s not too late,” Jason sings. This album is a call, and the songs on it send sparks flying into a culture that’s already running so hot the needle on the temperature gauge is bouncing erratically in the red. And while it’s understandable that, in this moment, some people want their radio to help them drift away, this finely calibrated set of ten songs is aimed right between the clear eyes of people who prefer to stay present and awake. It’s a call to those who won’t cower no matter how erratically the world turns, and who aren’t afraid of what looks back when they look in the mirror. Bruce Springsteen did that. Neil Young did that. Jason Isbell does that.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top-performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glasslined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.

In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son. In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the EStreet Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. And today, the Count Basie Theatre has embarked on a $20 million capital campaign, with the aim of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. A building dedicated to the Basie’s education programs and Performing Arts Academy will be constructed, which will also house an all-new second venue. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, an outdoor arts plaza and more. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Theatre aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life. An Intimate Evening with DAVID FOSTER Hitman Tour

Saturday, April 7 • 8PM “I believe that everyone gets three rounds in their life,” says musician, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist David Foster. “For me, two are completed and I’m on to Round Three. I think you have to change it up every round. My mantra is retreat and attack in another direction, which I’ve done twice. Now I’m going to do it again.” Foster’s first round was as a studio musician, arranger, and recording artist. His second round was becoming one of the most successful songwriters and record producers in history — shepherding albums that have collectively sold in the hundreds of millions. This period of his fourdecade career also found him creating The David Foster Foundation and volunteering his time and talent to over 400 charities, as well as becoming a household name as a performer throughout Asia where he tours annually.

PAUL ANKA

Celebrating 60 Years of Hits – His Way May 7 • 8PM

From an early age Paul Anka had a dream to make it as a singer and composer. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. He performed at every amateur night he could get to in his mother’s car, unbeknownst to her of course. In 1957, he scored a meeting with Don Costa, the A&R man for ABC-Paramount Records. He played him a batch of songs that included “Diana”– Costa was duly enthusiastic about the potential of the young singer and songwriter. The rapid and enormous success of “Diana”- his first number one hit – made him a star. By the ‘70s, the success of “My Way” and a string of hits like “(You’re) Having My Baby” confirmed his status as an icon of popular music. His later achievements as a recording artist included “Hold Me ‘Til the Morning Comes,”, the Spanishlanguage album Amigos, and Body of Work.

TOMORROWLAND! Taking A Look At The Basie Of The Future

Last September, the Basie broke ground on its $23 million capital campaign. Justly titled “The Future Is Now,” the project will double the size of the Basie facility, transforming the theater into a block-long creative campus. On its west side, the newly-named Jay And Linda Grunin Arts And Education Building will house a new, second venue and modern classroom and rehearsal spaces. Backstage, new technologies and amenities will help accommodate larger productions and attract more world-class artists and performances. On the east side of the property, a new, glass-walled lobby will take foot, fronted by the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion and a spacious public arts plaza. Construction will take approximately 20-24 months. Basie Renovation and Restoration co-chairs Steven Schultz and Stephen Cutler have overseen NK Architects of Morristown’s design of the project, along with Ben Harvey Construction of Long Branch and M. Silberman Interior Design of Shrewsbury. “We are delighted to break ground today on the expansion and updating of the historic Count Basie Theatre,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees. “It is a momentous day, and one that could not have happened without the support of many people and organizations. Particular thanks are due to the Grunin Foundation and my fellow board member Jeremy Grunin, plus Citi, the Asbury Park Press, Nancy Mulheren, Carol Stillwell, Maryann Larkin, Maggie Riker, Mark and Karey Hogan, Mark and Denise Rohl, and many others in making significant gifts to this campaign.”

ingénue redux 25th Anniversary Tour March 19 • 7:30PM

k.d. lang is that rare performer who, over 25 years as a major-label artist, has matured before our very ears. The Western Canada native launched her career with a blend of countryrock stylings and playfully punk-like attitude, by turns whimsical and subversive; back then, she practically put the alternative in alt-country. But from the very beginning, her bravura singing belied her kitschy cowgirl outfits and spiky hair; anyone lucky enough to attend her very first appearance in the United States, on a triple bill of unsigned artists at New York City’s Bottom Line, could hear that she was marked for greatness.

THE CHIEFTAINS

55th Anniversary Tour March 20 • 8PM

2017 marks the 55th Anniversary of The Chieftains beginning. Since 1962, they have been six-time Grammy Award winners and been highly recognized for reinventing traditional Irish music on a contemporary and International scale. Their ability to transcend musical boundaries to blend tradition with modern music has notably hailed them as one of the most renowned and revered musical groups to this day. In Ireland they have been involved in many major occasions, such as Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ireland in 1979 when they performed to an audience of over 1.3 million, and in 2011 as part of the historic visit to Ireland of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. In 2012, marking The Chieftains’ 50th Anniversary, they were awarded the inaugural National Concert Hall Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala event in Philadelphia hosted by The American Ireland Fund “in recognition of their tremendous contribution to the music industry worldwide and the promotion of the best of Irish culture.” BUY TICKETS 24/7

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T RODRIGUEZ April 9 • 8PM

Rodriguez, the legendary singer-songwriter known only by his surname, is a self-taught guitarist. He began performing in bars and clubs around the city of Detroit in the 1960s, as the city suffered postindustrial urban decay. It was there that he recorded two studio albums, Cold Fact in 1969 and Coming from Reality in 1971 released on Sussex records. These recordings went unnoticed in the U.S. and Rodriguez eventually turned his efforts elsewhere, earning a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Wayne State University, running for political office and working construction and factory jobs to support his family. In the late 1990s, South African fans finally sought him out, leading to the unanticipated renaissance of his music career.Their story is told in the 2012 Oscar award-winning documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, directed by Malik Bendjelloul, which has given Rodriguez a new measure of fame in the U.S. with his music and story now reaching audiences worldwide.

MAX RAABE & PALAST ORCHESTER Let’s Do It Tour April 10 • 8PM

In April 2018 Berlin-based Max Raabe & Palast Orchester will be crossing the Atlantic with their critically acclaimed show “Let’s Do It.” It may seem fresh that a German band tours the home territory of the American Songbook with a program stacked with standards like “Stormy Weather,” “Over My Shoulder” or “Who’s Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf,” but Max Raabe & Palast Orchester have their own charming way of interpreting the original arrangements. They take a classical approach, put thought into every musical phrase and then let the music flow. A wonderful contrast to these melodies well known to American and Canadian audiences are the German counterparts written in the late 20s. Hilarious songs like “When I need love, I go to Pauline,” romances like “Women are so beautiful when they love” and classics like Kurt Weill’s “Bilbao Song” are cleverly woven into a highly entertaining evening that builds bridges over time and space. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T THE BEACH BOYS Wild Honey Tour March 21 • 7PM

The Beach Boys has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love and Bruce Johnston, who along with Jeffrey Foskett, Brian Eichenburger, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill and Scott Totten continue the legacy of the iconic American band. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston, joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded in his field, Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists.

An Intimate Evening with KRISTIN CHENOWETH Sunday, March 25 • 7PM

Chenoweth has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and for a People’s Choice Award for her role on “Glee.” In 2009, she wrote an upliftingly candid, comedic chronicle of her life so far, A Little Bit Wicked, which debuted on the New York Times Hardcover Non Fiction Best Seller List.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T RENT

20th Anniversary Tour April 3 & 4 • 8PM

In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway… and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A reimagining of Puccini’s La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters— love.

THE EVERLY BROTHERS EXPERIENCE

Featuring the Zmed Brothers Sunday, May 6 • 3PM

In January of 2016, brothers Zachary and Dylan Zmed (acoustic guitars/vocals) and their partner (drummer in the group) Burleigh Drummond began developing The Everly Brothers Experience show. Since then they have celebrated the pivotal sounds of The Everly Brothers music with enthusiastic crowds all across the US and over seas in iconic clubs, theaters, performing arts centers, casinos, ballrooms, and coliseums. The Zmeds say, “Our aim is to honor the aesthetics of their iconic sound and honor their unique place in music history all while telling our own personal story,” and they do just that. Growing up with a father, (Adrian Zmed) as a traveling singer/ dancer/actor, and a mother (Barbara) as a second grade teacher in Southern California, the Zmed Brothers continually strive to pay homage to their roots by always infusing an instinctual blend of entertainment and education in their show.
