JULY-SEPTEMBER 2013
SHOWTIME
Note from Adam Philipson
Chief Executive Officer, Count Basie Theatre & Foundation June was a busy month at the Count Basie Theatre. We presented some amazing artists, including legends such as Buddy Guy and David Byrne as well as The Mavericks, and The Fab Faux who performed The Beatles’ The White Album in its entirety. We also hosted an intimate evening with actor Joe Pantoliano (Joey Pants) who discussed his film career and struggle with mental illness as part of “flick”, our Month-Long Celebration of Film and New Jersey Filmmakers. “flick” also included free films, an educational workshop about the history of film, and a successful Gala with Academy Award-winning composer Randy Newman. Thanks to your generosity, “Friends of Film,” and Tom Bernard from Sony Pictures Classics, we were able to raise enough funds to bring digital and satellite capabilities to this cherished community venue. With digital projection possibilities, we will continue our successful “Film for Thought™” Series, show free films, utilize satellite broadcasts and live streaming to show work from afar, and create a home to generate meaningful dialogue and community conversation. This past month we also announced the “Jazz at the Basie... Where it Belongs” Series -- featuring jazz giants like Diana Krall, Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, and Branford Marsalis. We also had a successful Golf Classic at Trump National in May and announced Appetite™- a four-day Gastronomic Experience™ that we will produce in September. I could not be more proud of the quality of work the Basie Team is doing. When you talk to our Board, Staff, Artists, or our Patrons you will hear the same theme -- “The Basie is firing on all cylinders and becoming a Regional Center for the Arts and for Arts Education.” This is something we are all committed to and is part of the great legacy I have inherited. I look forward to working together with you to create this vision! Adam Philipson Chief Executive Officer, Count Basie Theatre

Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board of Directors Photo: Brian Stratton
I am privileged to serve as the Chairman of the Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board. We at the Basie embarked on a new fiscal year July 1 with great optimism: the organization is stable and flourishing under CEO Adam Philipson; we are doing what we do -- concerts, educational programs, and films -- very well; and we are moving toward our vision as a regional center for the arts (both performances and education). We finished the 2013 fiscal year June 30 with a bang. Our annual gala, entitled “flick” this year, featured a concert by Randy Newman and was a great success. The theatre was rarely “dark” and frequently was full -- sold out shows over the last few months included, among others, the Counting Crows, Spank, the Basie Awards, Paul Anka and Steve Martin. The Basie, a non profit organization, is a great presence in our community -- it drives economic activity, it provides an opportunity to see great performers and performances, and it runs terrific education and youth programs. We need, however, the support of the community to keep doing all these things and to maintain this wonderful building. Please support the Basie any way you can: come to shows, become a member, attend fundraising shows or events, and/or donate directly. Thanks for coming tonight, enjoy the show, and we look forward to seeing you many times over the rest of the year. Tom Widener Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board of Directors

Melissa Etheridge July 15, 8PM
Since the bluesy anthem Bring Me Some Water brought her to the national consciousness 25 years ago, Melissa Etheridge has been delighting and challenging fans with songs that are both beautiful and activist-driven. Etheridge’s song “I Need to Wake Up,” which was written for the documentary An Inconvenient Truth, won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song. She is also two-time Grammy Award winner for her hits “Ain’t It Heavy” and “Come to My Window.” Her latest album, 2012’s 4th Street Feeling, is a spiritual and musical return to the singer’s roots with songs about her hometown of Leavenworth, Kansas set to a swampy, bluesy backdrop on which Etheridge plays lead guitar.

A Midsummer’s Night with The Monkees July 17, 8PM

History On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership of Joseph Stern of of Newark, thethe Burns and with Joseph Stern Newark, Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way for Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission. the land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, first to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org.

Gallagher: Gallagher’s Last Smash August 9, 8PM
This will be it, the final hurrah, and soon it will be safe for watermelons everywhere. Gallagher is going to make ONE MORE round of shows, and then retire for good, or maybe he’ll simply be dead (seriously, the guy has had a lot of heart attacks). After canceling the rest of his scheduled dates earlier this year following his 3rd and 4th heart attacks, ol’ Gallagher decided to hang up his Sledge-O-Matic and call it a career. But as it turns out, he is feeling great, and has more energy and ideas than ever. It is literally the LAST time our region will EVER see Gallagher live, EVER. That’s our promise. (I mean, what if you knew George Carlin’s last show was his last show. This isn’t a Cher farewell tour, it’s really it!). Michael McDonald August 14, 8PM
Two notes. That’s all it takes to recognize the voice of Michael McDonald. Distinctive and soulful, it is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our times. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown covers albums and recent genre-busting guest spots with alternative buzz bands Grizzly Bear and Holy Ghost, the fivetime Grammy-winning McDonald is that rare thing in contemporary pop – an artist whose work is both timeless and ever-evolving.

His inspirational albums have garnered him and his longtime friend and producer, Kyle Lehning, several awards. In 2001 Randy’s Atlantic Records/Warner Bros. album, Inspirational Journey, won a Dove Award for Bluegrass Album of the Year, and also a Dove Award for Country Recorded Song of the Year for the single, “Baptism.” Songs from Inspirational Journey also inspired the two-part season finale of the CBS TV series Touched by an Angel, that also featured Randy playing a significant role as part of an all-star cast.

An Evening with
Grateful Dead Lyricist
Robert Hunter October 1, 8PM
On Sale July 19, 12PM Legendary Grateful Dead lyricist, Robert Hunter returns to the public stage. “I began thinking about touring again and started working on my guitar playing,” Hunter said recently. “And the more I played the more I was reminded of the special joy that connecting with an audience brings.” He’s written far too many classics to count (Truckin’), and his lyrics float through American life the way Cole Porter’s once did. It is an exceptional show, and the news that he’s venturing back onto the road is welcome news indeed.

I’m IMPORTANT As a mom, I play many roles. I am the chauffeur, errand-runner, chef, and costume-maker to three daughters. Making sure my girls have everything they need leaves little time to take care of myself. But when it comes to getting my mammogram, I make it happen! Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram?
I am a mom. I am a leader. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305.
TAKING CARE OF NEW JERSEY
– Andrea, Middletown, NJ
About the Operations of the Count Basie Theatre The Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation organized under the section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The designation indicates that the corporation’s purpose is to provide a community service. It can accept tax deductible donations and all funds it generates must remain within the corporation to pay regular operating costs or to be reinvested in new programming or capital improvements. Any surplus funds cannot be retained by an individual or other entity. There are no owners or shareholders. The organization holds its assets in trust for the community. The Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of civic and community leaders who volunteer their time and receive no compensation for their efforts. Operations are conducted by a paid professional staff according to the policies and direction established by the Board in the By Laws and the Mission Statement of the organization. The results of the corporation’s operations are a matter of public record and copies of its annual financial filings with the state and federal government are available either from the organization itself or from the appropriate government agency. The Count Basie Theatre Foundation, Inc. is the Theatre’s fundraising arm. Also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the Foundation was created to provide operating support to the Theatre, raise the capital needed to restore the Theatre and to create an endowment. The Foundation oversees Membership, Major Gifts, Benefit Concerts, Corporate Sponsorships and Special Events. Please see the Count Basie Theatre’s website for specific details at www.countbasietheatre.org, click Donate or call Shannon Eadon in the Development Office at 732-224-8778 x 128. The mission of the Count Basie Theatre is to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region, foster an understanding and appreciation for the ennobling power of the performing arts and create an opportunity for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels. It is also our mission to develop and maintain a world-class venue that enhances the enjoyment of these entertainment and education programs, contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the community and the region, and honors the memory of Count Basie. Each year the Theatre hosts approximately 200 public events, attended by about 200,000 people. Half of these events are presented by the Theatre itself, while the other half are presented or produced by other organizations renting the Theatre. In the case of a Theatre rental production, the Theatre earns a rental fee and is reimbursed for its other costs. The producer assumes the cost of engaging the artist and staging the event, establishes ticket prices and receives the income. In the case of an event presented by Count Basie Theatre, the Theatre has determined that it is in the community’s best interest to present a particular program or artist and the Theatre takes the financial risk. If there is a surplus after costs have been covered, the Theatre retains the funds. If there is a loss, the Theatre must cover it from other sources, including membership contributions. Consistent with its mission, the Theatre’s own programming focuses on those programs which would otherwise not be available in this community.

Spotlight on Count Basie Theatre (Brother!) Ushers
Nick & Dan McMahon
How long have you been at the Basie?
“
people don’t get to work “ Most with their best friend, but I do.
Dan – I have been working at the Basie for just under two years now. Nick – I’ve been at the Basie for about six months now, my first show was the Brian Kirk benefit concert.
What’s your favorite thing about working at the Basie?
Dan – My favorite thing about working at the Basie is the people I work with and I love seeing the crowd have a great time. Also, there aren’t many places that you can work a rock concert, comedy act, play and a cooking star in one month. I love music and have a degree in history so the Basie is just a truly unbelievable experience for me. Nick – Honestly, I love everything about working here, the people you meet and help, the people you work with are great, and the shows are amazing.
What show(s) have you enjoyed most while working here?
Dan – My favorite shows probably would be Southside Johnny and Steve Miller. Nick – Lately I have really been enjoying the comedy shows, something about a night of nonstop laughter just puts me in a good mood, so either Kevin James or Bill Burr have been really up there for me.
Who would you like to see play here?
Dan – I would LOVE to see Bruce Springsteen at the Basie. Nick – It’s funny because I have a strong feeling Dan and I both have the same person for this question, but undoubtedly I would want to see Bruce Springsteen play the Basie.
What is it like working with your brother? Who’s older? By how much?
Dan – I am two years older than Nick and I think we just have so much fun working together, was really excited when got the job. He may be smarter but I am wiser. Nick – It is truly amazing to work with Dan, we have been close our whole lives, Dan is only two years older than me, so we have always done things together and having that carry over to the workplace is a pretty lucky thing. Most people don’t get to work with their best friend, but I do.
Who’s smarter? By how much? Just kidding, but not really. Answer the question! Dan – Nick may be smarter but I am wiser Nick – I’ll give Dan the book smarts, I’ve got the street smarts.
Tell us something we don’t know about each of you?
Dan – In the future Nick and I will either run a museum together, own a food truck, or find Atlantis. Nick – I would guess most people don’t know that I am well versed in both Latin and Ancient Greek, being able to read and write in both and even do a little oratory here and there. As for Dan, I would bet most people wouldn’t know he used to have a wicked curve ball. Or that he could dunk a basketball at 16 years-old.
The Count Basie Theatre thanks Dan and Nick for their service to the Basie! If you are interested in becoming a Count Basie Theatre Usher and joining our talented team, please contact Mary Hill at 732-224-8778 x 117.
