ACADEMY Note From the Director, Yvonne Lamb Scudiery

In her book Tune Your Brain: Music to Manage Your Mind, Body and Mood, Elizabeth Miles states that music can improve memory, control pain, reduce anxiety, boost IQ, enhance creativity and increase motivation. It is truly a magical elixir. The word MUSIC comes from the Greek “muse” the legendary goddesses of the arts and sciences. Studies have shown that music is processed on both sides of the brain, so that listening to it prepares your mind to be both the artist and the scientist, intuitive and logical. My interest in music and its effects on each of us goes back to my days in ballet classes that had live accompanists. I knew it was music that made the dancing so alluring for me. The purchase of our families’ first hi-fi was a major event in our family. The house was always filled with the sounds of Benny Goodman, the Glenn Miller Orchestra or Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite. I knew that this music transformed me in a profound way, and I was unable to put into words how it made me feel. I could see the obvious mood changes in my parents and siblings as we cavorted about the living room to a variety of tunes. I felt the magic and knew we had discovered something quite wonderful. My life at the Count Basie Theatre continues to be immersed in music. It is all around me. I hear the voices of the students in our singing and musical theatre classes, the Broadway melodies that motivate our dance students and the nostalgic sound of rock classics being played with heartfelt enthusiasm from our Rockit Live musicians. I see myself as being extremely fortunate, that this magical musical antidote is available to me on a daily basis. I know that my early exposure to multiple musical genres was hugely instrumental in my ability to problem solve and to think creatively. Besides elevating one’s mood and enhancing one’s health, it is directly related to creating, processing and recalling information. How lucky I am. So if you and your children aren’t already immersed in music on a daily basis, I would highly recommend adding a healthy dose to your life; at home, at work, in the car, on a hike…everywhere. “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” Plato. ”If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” Albert Einstein

Utilizing the teachings of Kristin Linklater, Cecily Berry and Arthur Lessac, students will learn how to relax their “instrument”, produce a proper sound, work on diction and articulation, master the art of projection, and learn how to maintain control over their vocal work for any size Theatrical Space. This is not a singing class per say, but would certainly benefit vocalists.

WEDNESDAY BROADWAY DANCE II/III 5-6PM AGES: 12-17 FEE: $135 INSTRUCTOR: KATE HAVEL A 5, 6, 7, 8……. Broadway dance, usually performed in musicals, is popular around the world. It was not until the 20th Century that dancing and drama became truly integrated and “Broadway Dancing” was recognized as a new style of jazz dancing. One of the ingredients to becoming a “triple threat” performer is to become comfortable with a wide variety of dance styles. Class will cover the most common patterns, movements and rhythms from Broadway’s Golden Age right up to the most recent rock oriented show-stoppers.

TUESDAY ACTING STYLES 6:30-8PM AGES: 11-17 FEE: $205 INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTOPHER TOMAINO John Gielgud described “style” as “knowing what kind of play you’re in.” Being able to define a play’s style is the actors’ first step in unlocking its mysteries. Focusing on the comic form, Mr. Tomaino will guide students through Restoration Comedy, English Drawing Room Comedy, Farce and Contemporary Comedy. Sheridan, Congreve, Coward, Feydeau and Simon are just a few of the master playwrights explored in this fun and exciting class. Great class to combine with Mr. Mott’s The Actor’s Voice: 5:30-6:30PM.

WEDNESDAY JULY 11, 18, 25 AUGUST 1, 8, 15, 22 WEDNESDAY BROADWAY DANCE BASICS 4-5PM AGES: 8-11 FEE: $135 INSTRUCTOR: KATE HAVEL The perfect class to hone those dance moves you see on the Broadway stage. Dance is one of the three ingredients necessary to become a true triple threat performer. It’s fun, it’s great exercise and it just might land you the role of your dreams. A much needed and often overlooked aspect of musical theatre training.

WEDNESDAY DIALECTS AND ACCENTS 5-6:30PM AGES: 11-17 FEE: $205 INSTRUCTOR: CHRISTOPHER TOMAINO Learn dialects and diction used in musical theatre, stage and film work. An important skill in every actor’s arsenal of tricks is his ability to sound “believable” in a variety of character roles. For those non-performers who wish to develop better, crisper, and more understandable speech, this is also a good place to start. In Mr. Tomaino’s Scenes With Dialects class (6:30-8PM) you will work with scenes and scripts that require British, Cockney, or Brooklyn accents.

ROCKIT!

Rockit gives young musicians an instant opportunity to play rock-n-roll with their peers, bringing them to perform live as a band and experience the dynamics of working together to achieve a common goal. Vocalists, Drummers, Guitarists, Bass Guitarists, Keyboardists, Brass and String players are encouraged to complement their private studies with our live program. After the initial audition (and orientation class) the musicians will be divided into bands and rehearse for the next six weeks. On Saturday, August 25, a rock concert will be held on-stage at the Count Basie Theatre. All band classes are 90-minutes long and taught by qualified instructors. Space is limited. Come experience and see why Rockit is the premiere rock band showcase for young musicians! Photo: Glen DiCrocco AUDITION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE: AGES: 8-18

FEES: AUDITION FEE: $10 Due with application PROGRAM FEE: $335 (plus $10 registration fee) Due upon acceptance into the program.

• All students must be currently studying with an instructor or a self taught master of music. • Students must perform a TWO-minute selection that best represents their style and ability. Vocalists may audition with a karaoke CD, musical accompaniment or sing a capella. Singing along with a prerecorded CD with vocals is not permitted. Karaoke is suggested. • All other musicians may audition with live or CD accompaniment, or solo. • Students are expected to bring their own guitars, straps, drum sticks, brass and string instruments. All other equipment is provided, including a full pedal board for guitarists. • All students must attend all rehearsals unless extenuating circumstances should occur and must also perform in the end-of-semester concert. • SUGGESTIONS: Instruments audition with a CD track or accompaniment. Guitarists need two minutes to get through a verse, chorus and solo. Soloing is not a requirement but helpful in band placement. If vocalists decide to audition a capella, please ask us for a starting note or bring a pitch pipe. Vocalists tend to go out of pitch without this. No medleys please.

All students must comply with these guidelines and entrance to the program is based on their audition performance. Participation in past Rockit programs does not guarantee placement. The previously-noted requirements are necessary to insure that each child enrolled in the program has a positive learning experience. Each band will be assigned a specific time and day for their 90-minute rehearsal class. SCHEDULED PROGRAM DATES ARE: AUDITION: Saturday, June 30, 10AM-8PM assigned. ORIENTATION: Saturday, July 14, 3PM (for all accepted students) REHEARSALS: Each accepted student will be assigned to one 90-minute rehearsal time slot on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
