Note From the Director, Yvonne Lamb Scudiery

First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination. This quote, from the one of the first gurus of the “self-help” literary genre, Napoleon Hill (Think and Grow Rich, 1937), has always been one of my favorites. While some see the glass as half full and others as half empty, I’ve always seen the glass for its potential to be used for anything but a drinking vessel. To have an idea, no matter how strange it might seem to others or how unconventional it might be, and see it through to fruition is an awesome feeling. It is my hope that this “fearless creativity” and willingness to take a chance will be instilled in our students through their exposure to our performing arts classes.

Ms. Scudiery thanks Bart Schanck for his generous donation of five electric guitars to The Performing Arts Academy.

The joy one feels in creating a performance piece, whether it is adapting a story for the stage, bringing an abstract idea to life through choreographed movement, or telling ones story through song or music, is one of the intrinsic benefits derived from involvement in the arts. The immediate rewards are obvious; a greater sense of self-worth, increased confidence, a growing sense of community, peer acceptance and personal validation.

The truly transformational and lasting rewards are not as immediately obvious. The young actor, exposed to stimulating scripts, and challenged “to create his own character” is given the opportunity to use his imagination. Likewise, the young vocalist who is handed the lyrics to a song with a particularly emotional subtext and asked to make the audience really feel that emotion is given an opportunity that requires imagination and originality. One of the most intriguing aspects of theatre is that it allows the artist to invent and reinvent himself or herself again and again. With consistent exposure to the performing arts the possibilities are infinite, the benefits long lasting and the journey as wild as the wildest imagination!
