outreach
7th & 8th Grade Students from Joseph R. Bolger Middle School, Keansburg, NJ with Instructor Kate Havel
This fall the Count Basie Theatre launched a new partnership with the Joseph R. Bolger Middle School in Keansburg, NJ. Kate Havel, one of the many talented instructors teaching in the outreach program in the schools, has been working on visual art and movement with a class of 7th and 8th grade students. Kate’s philosophy is to always expect the student’s best and applaud their efforts, in doing so they consistently exceed expectations.

I can’t thank you enough, and I really appreciate all that you do for them. It’s so nice to see such big smiles on their faces every Wednesday from 12-1!!!” - Michele Meyer, Joseph R. professional development
Jamin Carter leads a professional development workshop with teachers at the Red Bank Middle School
In October, 2013 the Red Bank Borough School District teachers attended a four hour professional development workshop presented by two dynamic teaching artists from Focus 5 an Arts Integration Consulting firm. Our partnership with The Kennedy Center For The Performing Art’s Partners in Education program affords us the opportunity to have the seminar partially underwritten by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Committee for the Performing Arts. Arts integrated classrooms create learners who are more engaged, focused and far more curious about the material being taught. There is mounting evidence from neuroscience and cognitive science research that tells us that a student’s long term retention is greatly enhanced through arts integration.

Vocalists in CJYC, with Instructor Kris Zook, during rehearsals
Rehearsals for The Central Jersey Youth chorale, our new collaboration with the Red Bank Borough School District and Count Basie Theatre, are in full swing. Initiated in the fall of 2013, and under the direction of Kristopher Zook, the chorale is comprised of students in grades fourth through eighth grades from eleven schools in Monmouth County. The goal is to build a repertoire reflecting a wide variety of styles and genres of music. Watch for upcoming performances by this enthusiastic and talented group of young vocalists!
