ACADEMY Note From the Director, Yvonne Scudiery

Self Discipline Or Passion…Equally Important

As you read the course descriptions in this brochure you will inevitably come upon one of my pet phrases, “teaches with passion…” you might also find the following statement: “this class will help to build self-discipline”. As a teaching artist, performer and now an Arts administrator, I understand the importance of both attributes and would like to consider myself blessed with both. While I would love to think that passion is the prime mover, the ultimate antidote, the quality that I long to see in my students and faculty alike, my life experience tells me that the real “winner’ here is a very strong dose of self-discipline. I see it in the young actors, dancers and musicians with whom I am fortunate to work. These youngsters not only excel in their respective areas of performing arts but in the academic world as well. The process of building a strong sense of self-discipline is not simple nor is it quick. Small challenges that take the individual to the next level, stubborn obstacles overcome, simple tasks completed…step by step, note by note, page by page the discipline and growth of the individual become more and more evident. One of the best aspects of developing a strong sense of self-discipline at any early age is that it’s yours forever. One could say that passion is indeed the fuel, the motivator, the icing on the cake: but the real foundation for success in any endeavor and in any career option is the ability to stay focused and committed. This summer we offer our students the opportunity to have fun, as they become more knowledgeable actors, dancers, singers and musicians hopefully with a newfound respect and understanding of the importance of self-discipline.

OUTREACH

Since its inception our Outreach program has grown from a offering an after school creative acting class to 1st and 2nd grade students at the Red Bank Primary school to multi-faceted arts education program that has included in-school drama and musical theatre for Middle School students, after school dance, drama and keyboard, a collaborative summer intensive in drama, music, drumming and singing (offered in conjunction with the Red Bank Borough School and the Red Bank Parks and Recreation Commission) and numerous master classes in performing arts to Middle and High School students in Monmouth County. Our plan is to continue the growth or our outreach programming by implementing additional classes in both the Primary and Middle Schools, offering a wider variety of master classes and in-school demonstrations, expanding the number of performances by our performance troupe to reach a broader range of senior residences and nursing homes. The Performing Arts Academy received three grants this fiscal year totaling over $14,000. The grants came from Investor Savings Bank Foundation, PNC Bank Foundation and Target Community Relations.
