A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR When I was growing up, I loved the television show The Addams Family. Reruns always played after the Saturday morning cartoons and I was fascinated by the eccentric house, the bizarre characters, and the family’s unflinching approach to living their lives the way they wanted despite what society thought of them. My brother, on the other hand, thought I was weird. He was probably right. Looking back, I know for a fact that The Addams Family – the television show, the movies, the remakes, and even the original comic series which was featured in the New Yorker magazine – helped me come to terms with being “different.” It helped me embrace my inner “weird.” It gave me strength – which eventually led me to theatre. At the Count Basie Center, we not only embrace everyone’s “weird,” we flat out celebrate it, harness it, and put it on display. Our programming throughout the year brings the most eclectic and diverse talent from around the world to our stages. Our arts education programs and youth productions teach students that being “weird” is not only fun – it’s entertaining and enriching. Our music programs transform ordinary “weird” into practiced and skilled performers. And Phoenix Productions allows performers of any age the opportunity to embrace their own personal “weird” and continue to develop their confidence, teamwork, dedication, and commitment in a nurturing and accepting environment. The message of The Addams Family is clear – be authentic, embrace the things that make you unique, and be fearless in your pursuit of happiness. Even if happiness means falling in love with the moon. Enjoy the show. James Managing Artistic Director Phoenix Productions at the Count Basie Center
