LETTER FROM

President & CEO Count Basie Center for the Arts

Dear Friends: Welcome to the Count Basie Center for the Arts mid-expansion! As you can see, the future of the Basie Center is materializing right before our eyes. We are already making our plans for how we will inaugurate and program our new spaces. Please enjoy the great article written by the Asbury park Press’ Alex Biese on pages 50–51, which will give you a sense of the landmarks that have occurred along the way. The Basie Center also recently opened an annex building on Chestnut Street, just blocks from our main campus. This will be the new home of the Basie’s Monmouth Conservatory of Music. The Conservatory comes with a 50-year heritage of classical music instruction in the region, and two years ago, the Basie was presented with an opportunity to keep it open upon the retirement of its founders. Our dedicated Board of Trustees elected to take over the organization, committing to the future of classical music and adding a high level of study to the Basie’s artistic offerings. Studying and playing classical music has been shown to raise IQ, EQ and test scores. In fact, it has even been linked to lowering the risk of arthritis and alzheimer’s. While the majority of our students come from the elementary, intermediate and high school ranges, we have students as young as 4 years old and a few senior citizens over 75! We are so excited to welcome the Monmouth Conservatory of Music to the Basie family. Last but not least, you may have seen that we announced our summer gala starring Blondie on Saturday, June 22! This is our chance to honor board member Mark Hogan and his wife Karey for their tireless service and generosity to the organization, as well as BCB Bank, which has been a partner in our expansion. We hope you will join us, as proceeds of the gala help provide arts education in our most underserved schools and professional development opportunities that inspire creative teaching in local classrooms. It’s this work that supports the lives of over 260,000 community members—children, families, educators, and more, enriched each year by the Basie Center’s diverse cultural and artistic performances and educational offerings. Until next time, Warm regards,

Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most influential composers of the last century.Wilson’s remarkable journey began in a modest Hawthorne, California home that was filled with music. His mom and dad both played piano, and as a young “boy soprano,” Brian’s vocal gift was immediately evident. He was barely out of his teens when he began to create some of the most beloved records ever… nine consecutive “gold” albums that featured such classics as “Surfer Girl,” “In My Room,” “I Get Around,” “Don’t Worry Baby,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Help Me Rhonda” and “California Girls”…just to name a handful of the more than two dozen Top 40 hits Brian co-wrote, arranged, produced and performed on with his family band, the Beach Boys.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer. In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.

In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that reflect the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a blocklong creative campus. The west side expansion is underway, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s asyet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, work has started to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrierfree amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. And recently, Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center lead to the renaming of its historic theater. At 93 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

The Angel on My Shoulder Tour Friday, April 5 • 7:30PM Engelbert Humperdinck never wanted to be a singer. A career in music, yes, but he was extraordinarily shy. The youngest boy of a family of ten children originally from Leicester, England, he grew up in Madras, India, where his father was stationed during World War II. Engelbert’s childhood was dominated by the love of his parents and his brothers and sisters. He knew he could sing harmonies, but the power of his own voice came as a surprise to him and other people.“It’s just so loud, but I discovered I can be tender with it at the same time.”

IN THE MOOD a 1940’s musical revue April 18 • 7:30PM

IN THE MOOD is a celebration of the music of the 1930s & 40s – the Big Band era. It was the last time that all Americans were listening and dancing to the same kind of music. With our live sensational 13 piece String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra and our fabulous IN THE MOOD Singers and Dancers, the great melodies and lyrics that are still with us today are presented in a musical revue that is jazzy, sentimental, rhythmic, nostalgic and patriotic – all happening at the same time. With music arrangements, costumes and choreography IN THE MOOD is as authentic as it gets.

THE BIZARRE WORLD OF FRANK ZAPPA

A Holographic Concert Experience April 22 • 8PM The Bizarre World Of Frank Zappa will include longtime and legendary Zappa players Ray White, Mike Keneally, Scott Thunes, Robert Martin and Ed Mann with Joe “Vaultmeister” Travers; they’ll be joined along the way by Steve Vai, Ian Underwood, Lady Bianca, Napoleon Murphy Brock and Arthur Barrow. Hours of never-before-seen (or heard) Zappa performance footage from the early seventies form the basis of the “can’t miss” concert spectacle. “The development of the ‘Bizarre World’ has been a herculean undertaking and an extremely emotional journey for me,” says Ahmet Zappa. “Weirdly, it’s also been one of the most creatively satisfying projects that I have ever had the privilege of working on. It’s fascinating to me how into holograms my dad was and it’s unbelievable that we have Frank in his own words talking about it. The fact that we’re now finally able to technologically bring to life the ideas and concepts my father talked about so many years ago is astonishing. People’s minds, eyes and ears will be stunned by the crazy amounts of awesomeness they’ll be exposed to every night on this tour.

BOZ SCAGGS

Out of the Blues Tour June 25 • 8PM It’s appropriate that Boz Scaggs’ new album is Out of the Blues, since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career. Born William Royce Scaggs in Canton, Ohio on June 8, 1944, he grew up in Oklahoma and Texas, where he spent his teenage years immersed in the blues, R&B and early rock ‘n’ roll. While attending school in Dallas, he played in local combos. After several years as a journeyman musician around Madison, WI and Austin, TX, Scaggs spent time traveling in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, eventually settling in Stockholm where he recorded the album Boz. Returning to the U.S. in 1967, Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band in San Francisco, performing on that group’s albums Children of the Future and Sailor, before launching his solo career with 1968’s seminal Boz Scaggs LP, recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL for Atlantic Records.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT FOREIGNER The Hits on Tour May 8 • 8PM

Featuring a choral accompaniment from Trinity Hall On September 13th, 2017 Foreigner’s catalog sales were celebrated in Business Insider magazine as hitting the Top 40 among the Best Selling Music Artists of All Time. The Beatles were justifiably #1, but Foreigner came in ahead of Britney Spears, Bob Dylan, Phil Collins, Prince, Queen, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. With ten multi-platinum albums and sixteen Top 30 hits, Foreigner is universally hailed as one of the most popular rock acts in the world with a formidable musical arsenal that continues to propel sold-out tours and album sales, now exceeding 75 million. Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including Juke Box Hero, Cold As Ice, Hot Blooded, Waiting For A Girl Like You, Feels Like The First Time, Urgent, Head Games, Say You Will, Dirty White Boy, Long, Long Way From Home and the worldwide #1 hit, I Want To Know What Love Is, Foreigner continues to rock the charts more than 40 years into the game with massive airplay and continued Billboard Top 200 album success.

BLONDIE

Saturday, June 22 • 7:30PM “Here comes the 21st Century,” Debbie Harry assuredly sang nearly three decades ago on her solo disc Def Dumb And Blonde, “it’s gonna be so much better for a girl like me.” With the turn of the century well behind us now, that gleeful prediction has certainly come true: Singer-songwriter Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke and their band-mates in Blondie are undeniable pop icons, their sound and sensibility as fresh as when they first topped the charts in the late 1970s. In their newest project, Po11inator, Blondie enlisted a group of cool songwriters to contribute to the record weaving their own way into the living, breathing story of Blondie, a group that directly affected their own genetic makeup as artists. The list is enviable and reflects the dynamism of Blondie’s very own crosspollinating past – the fans and friends contributing material are blonde-bewigged superstar Sia, Blood Orange frontman Dev Hynes, British singer Charli XCX, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Nick Valensi (The Strokes), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), and Canadian movie blogger and indie rocker (under the name An Unkindness) Adam Johnston.

Gold In A Brass Age Tour June 5 • 8PM David Gray’s first album, “A Century Ends”, was released in 1993, followed by “Flesh” in 1994. As David’s success grew, he released a pair of compilations (“Lost Songs 95-98” and “The EP’s 9294”) and reissued “A Century Ends” and “Flesh”. “A New Day at Midnight” followed up his successful international breakthrough in the fall of 2002, and 2005’s “Life in Slow Motion” debuted at the top of the charts in both Ireland and the U.K. In 2007 he released “Shine: The Best of the Early Years”, followed by “Greatest Hits.” Most recently, David released “Draw The Line” in 2009, “Foundling” in 2010, and “Mutineers” in 2014. In 2016, “The Best Of David Gray” came out in a standard and deluxe format.

ROB THOMAS

Special guest Abby Anderson May 28 • 8PM Rob Thomas is one of modern music’s most compelling and commercially successful artists. For 20 years, he has been the frontman and primary composer for Matchbox Twenty, leading the band to multiplatinum success over the course of four albums and a string of No. 1 hits that include “Push,” “3AM,” “Bent,” “If You’re Gone,” and “Unwell.” Thomas’ three solo albums, 2005’s platinum-certified No. 1 album … Something To Be and 2009’s cradlesong generated the hit singles “Lonely No More,” “This is How A Heart Breaks,” “Her Diamonds” and “Someday.” Thomas made history with “…Something to Be” as having the first album by a male artist from a rock or pop group to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 since the chart had debuted. With cradlesong he made history once again as the only male artist with multiple #1 hits at Adult Top 40, tieing Pink with most #1s by a solo artist in the chart’s history. His most recent release, 2015’s The Great Unknown, was praised by the likes of Rolling Stone who celebrated Thomas as “still the consummate pop-rock craftsman who has been making it all sound so smooth for years.”

THE TENTH AND FINAL

HOPE CONCERT

(RED BANK – JAN 18) The tenth and final HOPE concert, the renowned charity concert series helmed by musician Bobby Bandiera, ended on a high note December 23 at the Count Basie Center for the Arts, raising $112,000 each for POAC Autism Services and Red Bank’s Parker Family Health Center. “Bobby Bandiera, his band, special guests like Southside Johnny, Gary U.S. Bonds, Jim Babjak from The Smithereens and others, made the final HOPE concerts one of the most successful,” said Adam Philipson, President / CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “We’re grateful to all the patrons, artists and organizations who have been part of this great Count Basie Center legacy, and we couldn’t be happier for the work the Parker Center and POAC will be able to do with money raised from this year’s finale.” “Bless everyone who has contributed to make HOPE successful,” said Bandiera.“It’s a great feeling to be part of a community that cares to give back.” “This year’s HOPE concert was a home run for Parker,” said Dr. Gene Cheslock, Founder, Parker Family Health Center. “We got to soak in a fabulous concert, staged in part for us, the proceeds of which will go a long way toward supporting our budgetary demands for 2019, all the while exposing our singular services to an ever increasing audience. We’re so grateful to Bobby and the gang.” “POAC is so thrilled to have been a part of this amazing show,” said Gary Weitzen, Executive Director, POAC Autism Services. “Bobby Bandiera absolutely outdid himself on stage, and all the performers, Big Joe Henry, and everyone at the Count Basie Center made it such a special night.

“This donation is one of the largest POAC has ever received and will go a long way toward helping us continue to provide free training and recreational events for children and adults with autism, and to expand our safety and training programs for police, first responders, parents and educators. The impact of this donation on the autism community will be felt for years to come.” In addition to the concert contribution, radio personality and show host Big Joe Henry announced that money remaining in a fund generated by the first HOPE show – held by area musicians in 2003 to benefit Bandiera’s son, Robert Jr. -- would be donated to POAC. Since that first HOPE concert in 2003, the shows have raised nearly $3 million, attracting superstar talent like Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, Deborah Harry of Blondie, Max Weinberg and others, while benefitting organizations like 180 Turning Lives Around, Mary’s Place By The Sea, the VNA Health Group, the Valerie Fund, Joan Dancy and P.A.L.S., Fulfill (frmly. The Foodbank Of Monmouth and Ocean County), The Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Horizons, and the nonprofit Count Basie Center itself.

Everything you need to know about...

THE BASIE CENTER EXPANSION (REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM THE ASBURY PARK PRESS. WRITTEN BY ALEX BIESE.)

The Count Basie Center for the Arts is in the midst of a $26 million expansion, transforming it from a single, historic venue into a robust arts and education campus on Monmouth Street in Red Bank. Center officials expect the project to be completed by the end of 2019.

Here’s a timeline of the major events from the Basie’s expansion project so far: • October 2015: The Basie announces its expansion, initially priced at an approximate $20 million. • July 2016: Red Bank Zoning Board approves the project.

Witnessing the progress over the last four years, according to Basie president and CEO Adam Philipson, has been spectacular.

• November 2016: The Basie announces it’s neared the halfway mark of its capital campaign goal. • March 2017: The main stage at the theater is named the Asbury Park Press Stage. Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo perform the first show on the newlycommemorated performance space.

“We’re all walking by, and walking across the street, just kind of sitting back, marveling. It’s kind of closing in,” he said. The prestigious venue first opened as Reade’s Carlton Theatre in 1926. It was renamed the Monmouth Arts Center in 1973, and then renamed again to honor Red Bank native jazz icon William J. “Count” Basie in 1984 following his death earlier that year

• September 2017: Ground is broken on the expansion, alongside the announcement of the center’s Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building. • May 2018: The landmark is renamed the Count Basie Center for the Arts.

The expansion project will approximately double the Basie’s size and come to include the Grunin Arts and Education Building to the west of the current theater, topped by the Rock ‘n’ Rohl Rooftop Lounge, named after campaign donors Mark and Denise Rohl.

• October 2018: The center’s main stage performance space is renamed the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre. BUY TICKETS 24/7

E Street Band guitarist and Middletown native Steven Van Zandt and his wife, Maureen, serve as honorary campaign co-chairs and are members of the Basie’s board of trustees. Maureen Van Zandt, who has performed with the students of the Basie’s Rockit Live Foundation, often has discussed the vital importance of the expansion in advancing the theater’s arts education mission.

A second performance space, with a capacity of 350 people seated and approximately 700 standing, is also coming to the west. To the east there will be an expanded lobby with an elevator, new concessions and restrooms, a members lounge, the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion (named for philanthropists Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin) and an outdoor plaza.

“It’s going to be great for theater, for dance as well, and it’s really important,” she told the Asbury Park Press in 2017. “You have to start (arts education) at that age and instill that passion and love into kids.” “As I always say, we’re the only country in the world that thinks art is a luxury,” added Steven Van Zandt. “It’s not (a luxury). It’s an essential part of the quality of life, and we have to encourage that wherever possible.”

The nearly century-old, 1,500-seat main theater space also will receive new air conditioning and heating systems, expanded restroom facilities, as well as a modernized backstage area and updated production technology.

The developments will necessitate a four-to-six-week closure of the Basie this summer. During that time, the center’s educational summer camps will remain in operation. The Count Basie Center Performing Arts Academy’s programs for young musicians include the Monmouth Conservatory of Music, the Basie’s RockIt! Live Academy and the Jazz Arts Academy. Success stories from the Basie’s performing arts education programs include Grammy-nominated, Rumson-native pop singer-songwriter Charlie Puth and Colts Neck native and former “The Voice” finalist Jacquie Lee. The Basie’s expansion will add five classrooms, for a total of nine, in an effort to advance the center’s educational efforts. The Asbury Park Press is a sponsor of the capital campaign, which has also received the backing of several notable local celebrities.

Jon Stewart, the comedian, actor, activist and former host of “The Daily Show,” a Lawrenceville native who now lives in Monmouth County, served free lunch to construction workers on site in September. A June show by Stewart also supported the expansion project. “I thought it was a great idea to have the kind of opportunities that kids are going to have to come here and learn and experience the arts,” Stewart told the Asbury Park Press in September. “It’s so important. And schools are having a harder and harder time being able to administer those because their budgets are tight, too. So to have something like this available locally I think is really important.” From the Asbury Park Press, March 4, 2019, reprinted with permission. SWISH!

Meet Mary Pato The Basie’s ‘Flusher Usher’ She’s Mary Pato, but for scores of Basie customers – mostly women, waiting patiently for a ladies’ room stall – she’s the Flusher Usher. The Lady of the Loo. The Queen of the Latrine. “If you have to stand in line for the bathroom, you might as well make it fun,” says Pato, who entertains the ladies’ room line and employs various techniques to keep things flowing -- so to say. “I taught first and second grade for 18 years,” says Pato , who has been with the Basie since 2016. “I started labeling the stalls with song titles. Ladies’ room lines never move -- it’s a nightmare. So I’d put the song titles on the door, and say ‘Welcome to the Basie bathroom – our motto is ‘Pee and flee, flow and go, flush and rush.” “And if you take too long, you have to sing the song on your door.” Pato’s porcelain puns have made her a fan favorite. “It’s all about speed in the ladies room,” Pato adds. “Don’t text, think of the girl who’s next. No jumpsuits, no rompers, no Spanx.”

Buddy Guy: The title of Buddy Guy’s latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist’s eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015’s Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. “I got children and grandchildren who didn’t know who I was, but nowadays we can play outdoor concerts and see kids that are eight, nine, twelve years old coming to me and saying, ‘I didn’t know who you was, but I read what Eric Clapton said about you,’” Guy explains when discussing his mindset around the new record. “I’m always trying to make an album that someone accidentally plays where some kid hears it, picks up a guitar, and helps keep the blues alive.” Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band: The Louisiana born axe man and songsmith has sold millions of albums while throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT GET THE LED OUT The American Led Zeppelin Friday, May 17 • 8PM

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album…GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage.

BOBFEST

The Bob Dylan Birthday Celebration May 23 • 8PM Celebrate the music of Bob Dylan on the eve of his 78th birthday as one of the year’s most heralded Basie Center events returns from a sold out west coast tour to ‘shake the windows and rattle the walls’ with Pat Guadagno’s performance of Dylan’s classic, Blood on the Tracks. The rock & roll Poet Laureate’s 15th album, released in 1975 amidst a deluge of important new singersongwriters (each one hailed by rock pundits as the ‘next Bob Dylan’) assured the world that, in fact, there is only one Bob Dylan — and there won’t ever likely be another.

TUSK

The World’s Number One Tribute to Fleetwood Mac Friday, September 20 • 8PM Tusk is the number one Tribute to Fleetwood Mac in the world, bar none. No wigs, no backing tracks, no gimmicks, just five musicians recreating the music of Fleetwood Mac to perfection with note for note renditions that no other Fleetwood Mac tribute on the touring scene today can come close to duplicating.
