SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT MARSHALL TUCKER BAND WITH SPECIAL GUESTS THE OUTLAWS November 7 • 7:30PM

In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. Today, the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony/RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of The Marshall Tucker Band sound.

THE LAST WALTZ TOUR 2019 November 6 • 8PM

The Last Waltz Tour 2019: A Celebration of The Band’s Historic Farewell Concert features a star-studded lineup led by GRAMMY® Award-winning guitar legend and vocalist Warren Haynes and GRAMMY® Awardwinning producer/musician Don Was, with Jamey Johnson, Lukas Nelson, John Medeski, Terence Higgins, and Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns featuring the original horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint. Very special guests Cyril Neville (The Neville Brothers), Dave Malone (The Radiators), and Bob Margolin (Longtime Muddy Waters guitarist who performed with Waters and The Band in the original Last Waltz) will be featured throughout the tour. Over forty years ago, The Band performed their final concert to a sold-out crowd with a whos-who of Rock’N Roll royalty in attendance. “As far as farewells go, this one was major,” stated Rolling Stone Magazine in 2016 expose about the famed concert. The evening culminated with “Don’t Do It,” The Band’s cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It.” After the last note, Robbie Robertson, The Bands’ lead guitarist, songwriter and a founding member, said “Goodnight. Goodbye.” walking off stage, forever immortalizing this epic event. BUY TICKETS 24/7

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer. In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.

In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that reflect the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a blocklong creative campus. The west side expansion is underway, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s asyet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, work has started to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrierfree amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. And recently, Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center lead to the renaming of its historic theater. At 93 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

BLIZZARD - Taking the Stage by Storm March 8 • 7PM FLIP Fabrique is the story of each one of us. A story of long-time friends, who were dreaming of a collective project that would draw the people in; a project of circus that suspends time, feeds our imagination and moves us by its beauty. With Blizzard, FLIP Fabrique takes you on a crazy, poetic and gentle journey in the dead of winter, and invites you to lose yourself in a moment of complete wonder. With performers at the peak of their art and outstanding visual poetry, Blizzard promises to blow away everything in its path. What if winter has taken over? Not just outside, in the streets and in the fields, but also in the houses, in the bedrooms, underneath our clothes, and even right into our hearts. Everything, absolutely everything, buried under the snow, obliterated by a white-out. The north wind freezes time as it flows over us. Would it be a catastrophe? Or a chance to start over, to fix our mistakes? A new blank page in the shape of a blizzard.

And yet, this highly praised herald platinum-selling artist has never released a greatest hits album. Hard to believe, no? Well, unlike some artists who roll out a greatest hits package after, say, their second album, Isaak waited until he actually had enough hits to legitimately describe the collection as such. “Shouldn’t a greatest hits collection after two records be called ‘Greatest Hit’?” Isaak asks. “I guess I’ve just always been too busy making records. Plus, it takes a while before you really want to compile everything. But after going through all the songs to make the Best Of, I feel like we have good stuff.”

His sincere, respectful portrayal of “The King” has earned endorsements by Elvis Presley’s own musicians and back-up singers. He regularly performs with the Jordanaires, and his style, charisma and ability to get the audience involved in the show have proved to be quite the crowd pleaser. The Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey, knew what he was saying when he dubbed Little River Band “the best singing band in the world.” Through the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, LRB enjoyed huge chart success with multi-platinum albums and chart topping hits like “Reminiscing,” “Cool Change,” “Lonesome Loser,” “The Night Owls,” “Take It Easy On Me,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Happy Anniversary,” “We Two,” “Man On Your Mind,” “The Other Guy,” and “It’s A Long Way There.” Worldwide album and CD sales now top 30 million. And in 1982 LRB set a record for having had Top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years – In fact, they were the very first band to achieve that remarkable plateau! According to BMI, “Reminiscing” has garnered rare status with over 5 million air plays on American radio, and “Lady” is close behind with over 4 million air plays.

AIR SUPPLY

The Lost in Love Experience Saturday, February 1 • 8PM Graham Russell & Russell Hitchcock met on May 12, 1975, the first day of rehearsals for “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Sydney, Australia; they became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. After the shows’ performances at 10:30, they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs, “Love and Other Bruises” and “If You Knew Me” and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style. They made a single in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous huge venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break the U.S. market.

BRANFORD MARSALIS QUARTET February 26 • 8PM

Branford Marsalis Quartet: Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most influential and revered figures in contemporary music. The NEA Jazz Master, Grammy Award winner and Tony Award® nominee is equally at home performing concertos with symphony orchestras and sitting in with members of the Grateful Dead, but the core of his musical universe remains the Branford Marsalis Quartet. After more than three decades of existence with minimal personnel changes, this celebrated ensemble is revered for its uncompromising interpretation of a kaleidoscopic range of both original compositions and jazz and popular classics. After the Grammynominated Upward Spiral, on which guest vocalist Kurt Elling was seamlessly integrated into the group, the Quartet has followed up with The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul, its most emotionally wideranging and melody driven collection to date. John Zeugner captured the impact of the Quartet in live performance in a recent concert review, calling it “casually confident, professional, cerebral, and supercharged with energy. The Branford Marsalis Quartet…was all of those adjectives and more.”

AN EVENING WITH HERB ALPERT AND LANI HALL Friday, May 22 • 7:30PM

HERB ALPERT: Creator and innovator, musician and producer, artist, and philanthropist, Herb Alpert is a man with a profound passion. Born in Los Angeles, the future trumpeter came of age in a house filled with music. At the age of eight, he was drawn to the trumpet in a music appreciation class in his elementary school. LANI HALL: Grammy Award-winning vocalist and producer, Lani Hall started her singing career in 1966, as the lead singer of Sergio Mendes’s break through group, Brasil ’66. She left behind her city roots in Chicago and, for 5 years, performed throughout the world. While Lani’s singing career took her on the road, she also focused on her writing — committing to the page her personal impressions of the world around her. Sergio Mendes further expanded her writing career by asking Lani to write the English lyrics for many of the band’s Brazilian songs.
