A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

Note from Adam Philipson President & CEO, Count Basie Theatre

Friends and patrons, You’ll frequently hear about the great shows and legendary artists we’re fortunate to have on our stage. In fact, the community buzz generated when artists like Ringo Starr, Steely Dan or Norah Jones grace our historic venue is deafening. What you may not hear about are what we call “missionbased shows.” These are the shows that highlight and reflect our mission as a community nonprofit. They’re diverse, enlightening, educational – and, most of all, fun. A perfect example: The African Children’s Choir, an assembly of children from several African nations, many of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS and other sicknesses, and all of whom have faced extreme poverty. We know that the arts have the ability to heal and to inspire hope -- and watching this choir of 7-12 year olds sing their hearts out is exactly what students, parents, teachers and communities need in these complex times in which we live. Sadly, only 300 patrons were present that evening. Earlier that day, the Count Basie Theatre’s Bus-In program brought in more than 1,500 students from Monmouth and Ocean County Schools. The Choir shared stories and song with these students, and from the letters we received afterwards, we know that this experience made a tremendous impact. We’re bombarded with stories of war, natural disasters and other bad news on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. Harder to learn and discover are stories of victory and courage – not unlike the joyful noise created by the African Children’s Choir that night on the Basie stage. I can’t encourage you enough to bring your children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces to experience the Basie’s mission-based shows. It is so important to celebrate and understand world culture, and to relate to those with the insight and strength to use the arts to help them communicate and heal. We appreciate all of our great patrons who come to the Basie to see their favorite artists. We also hope we can inspire you to consider at least one “new” type of experience here at the Basie. You won’t be disappointed it – I guarantee it. Let me know what you think by emailing ceo@thebasie.org

Jazz at the Basie... Where it belongs

CHICK COREA & BÉLA FLECK Saturday, September 26 • 8:00 PM

Chick Corea & Béla Fleck, two master songwriters, musicians, and band leaders meet in a historic duet of piano and banjo. The Grammy-winning duet will combine Corea and Fleck’s most recognizable tunes with the music from their Latin Grammy-winning album The Enchantment. With a mix of jazz and pop standards, crossing a myriad of genres, from jazz, bluegrass, rock, flamenco and gospel, this will be a casual, intimate evening with two legends from different musical worlds.

Readers Poll. Born in 1941 in Massachusetts, Chick remains a tireless creative spirit, continually reinventing himself through his art. As The New York Times has said, he is “a luminary, ebullient and eternally youthful.” Béla Fleck is often considered the premier banjo player in the world. A New York City native, he picked up the banjo at age 15 after being awed by the bluegrass music of Flatt & Scruggs. While still in high school he began experimenting with playing bebop jazz on his banjo. In 1980, he released his first solo album, Crossing the Tracks, with material that ranged from straight ahead bluegrass to Chick Corea’s “Spain.” In 1989 he formed the genre-busting Flecktones, with members equally talented and adventurous as himself.

Chick Corea has attained iconic status in music. The keyboardist, composer and bandleader is a DownBeat Hall of Famer and NEA Jazz Master, as well as the fourth-most nominated artist in Grammy Awards history with 63 nods – and 22 wins, in addition to a number of Latin Grammys. From straight-ahead to avant-garde, bebop to jazz-rock fusion, children’s songs to chamber and symphonic works, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his career since playing with the genre-shattering bands of Miles Davis in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Yet Chick has never been more productive than in the 21st century, whether playing acoustic piano or electric keyboards, leading multiple bands, performing solo or collaborating with a who’s who of music. Underscoring this, he has been named Artist of the Year twice this decade in the DownBeat

Throw Down Your Heart, Fleck’s latest album, is his most ambitious project to date. In onlocation collaborations with musicians from Uganda, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, South Africa and Madagascar, Béla Fleck explores the African origins of the banjo, the prototype of which was brought to American shores by African slaves. The recipient of Multiple Grammy Awards going back to 1998, Béla Fleck’s total Grammy count is 14 Grammys won, and 30 nominations. He has been nominated in more different categories than anyone in Grammy history. 7

TEARS FOR FEARS

Wednesday, September 30 • 8:00 PM Tears For Fears’ brought Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith into the pop music spotlight via their 1983 debut album The Hurting, with songs including “Mad World,”“Pale Shelter” and “Change,” all Top 10 hits in the bands British homeland. Even greater success would greet them with 1985’s Songs From The Big Chair, boasting three Top 5 singles in the U.S. alone (dual No. 1’s “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” and “Shout” and “Head Over Heels”); catapulting the pair to superstardom.

Big Chair’s follow-up album Sowing The Seeds Of Love emerged four years later and it soared into the Top 10 with the No. 2 smash “The Seeds Of Love.” A joyous, profoundly Beatle-esque burst of rich melodic pop. Their most recent studio album, 2004’s critically acclaimed Everybody Loves A Happy Ending (“Closest Thing To Heaven,” “Call Me Mellow” and “Who Killed Tangerine,”) signaled a welcome return for one of the biggest and best-loved bands of the post-MTV age, as well as one of the most eagerly anticipated reunions in pop music history. 12

STEVEN WRIGHT Friday, October 2 • 8:00 PM

Academy Award winner Steven Wright is a prototype comedian that many others continually try to follow. Steven got his big break when he was booked for his first Tonight Show appearance in 1982. The king of late night enjoyed the performance so much he invited Steven to appear again the following Thursday, a rarity on the Tonight Show. His back-to-back appearances helped put his fledgling career into high gear. The comic soon found himself performing his off-beat routines on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, and numerous trips back to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Wright expanded his comedy career to include comedy albums, film and television appearances. His 1985 debut album, I Have A Pony, earned him a Grammy nomination. Steven has been seen in numerous films including Desperately Seeking Susan, Mike Meyers’ So I Married An Axe Murderer, Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers, and Nora Ephron’s Mixed Nuts. Steven’s second CD, I Still Have A Pony, was released by Comedy Central Records in 2007 earning Steven his second Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album. He is a regular guest with David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Ferguson and continues touring the U.S., Canada and overseas. 14

A singer, composer and actor, Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 12 albums. Coupled with his gift for storytelling, the Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention defying manner that breaks down barriers. Among his many accolades, besides the four Grammy Awards, he was given the Americana Music Associations inaugural Trailblazer Award, and was recently named the Texas State Musician.

growing older and surrendering, on his terms. The record is musically rooted in acoustic blues, accentuated by Hiatt’s soulful, gritty voice, which mirrors the gravity of his reflective lyrics. Hiatt’s songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt (“Thing Called Love”), Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop, Rosanne Cash (#1 country hit, “The Way We Make A Broken Heart”), and the Jeff Healey Band (“Angel Eyes”). He earned a Grammy nomination for Crossing Muddy Waters, while B.B. King and Eric Clapton shared a Grammy for their album Riding With The King, the title track from which was a Hiatt composition. Hiatt has received his own star on Nashville’s Walk of Fame, the Americana Music Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting, has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and was saluted at the Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards.

John Hiatt, who the Los Angeles Times calls “… one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years,” released his latest album Terms Of My Surrender last year via New West Records. Hiatt, a master lyricist and satirical storyteller, weaves hidden plot twists into fictional tales ranging in topics including redemption, relationships, 20

Gilbert & Sullivan Players PIRATES OF PENZANCE Sunday, October 18 • 3:00 PM

This New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players production is your chance to get carried away by Pirates. Join the band of swashbuckling buccaneers, bumbling British bobbies, frolicsome Victorian maidens, and the delightfully dotty “model of a modern Major-General” for a rollicking romp over the rocky coast of Cornwall. This exuberant musical theater masterpiece, directed and conducted by Albert Bergeret with

choreography by Bill Fabris, is performed in its original format. The rich sounds of full orchestra, chorus, and legitimate vocal soloists resonate with classic elegance and power while the company’s vibrancy, energy and contemporary sense of humor keep the show alive and exciting to a modern audience. The Pirates of Penzance – they’ll steal your heart away! 22

Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org

THE CAPITOL STEPS Friday, October 23 • 8:00 PM

Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

over 35 albums, including their latest, Mock the Vote. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?!

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded 30

SCOTT BRADLEE’S POSTMODERN JUKEBOX Friday, November 6 • 8:00 PM Presented by: Count Basie Theatre & AEG Live

The work of Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox has been viewed on the ensemble’s YouTube channel well over a hundred million times. Most of those doing the viewing, however, are not fully aware of the method to Bradlee’s madness. On the surface, the method is video – clips of full-band performances (that’s Bradlee on piano) shot in the bandleader’s living room with a single stationary camera. The madness: pop hits of the present performed à la pop hits of the past. Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” assayed as a doo-wop number; Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” tricked out in flapper jazz; Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” rendered a 1940s big-band standard.

uniting generations; he’s breaking the rules. Among Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox’s subsequent hits are a New Orleans-flavored take on Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine” – 3+ million views; the “grandpa-style” reiteration of “Thrift Shop” – 6 million views; and “We Can’t Stop” – 10.5 million views. Media coverage, including the likes of “Good Morning America” and NPR, ensued. The scene for those attending a Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox show is reminiscent of a speakeasy, with swells in vintage threads swilling Prohibition-era cocktails. “It’s a variety show, a musical revue featuring special guests,” Bradlee illuminates. “Coming to a PMJ show is like time-traveling back to Old Hollywood – it’s an experience.” Creating that for audiences appears to be PMJ’s ultimate mission.

In fact, Bradlee’s method runs deeper. He’s educating his audience about 20th-century song styles; he’s commenting on the elasticity of the pop form; he’s confounding cultural context; he’s 44

BLACK VIOLIN

Tuesday, November 17 • 8:00 PM Black Violin is the blend of classical, hip-hop, rock, R&B, and bluegrass music. Live, they are accompanied by their crack band, featuring ace turntable whiz DJTK (Dwayne Dayal) and a drummer. Named one of the hottest bands at SXSW in 2013, Black Violin was invited to perform at Bonnaroo and returned to SXSW this year to SRO crowds.

Since starting Black Violin a decade ago Wil Baptiste and Kevin “Kev Marcus” Sylvester have performed an average of 200 shows a year in 49 states and 36 countries as far away as Dubai, Prague and South Africa, while appearing at official NFL celebrations for three Super Bowls and last year’s U.S. Open in Forest Hills with Jordin Sparks. Their groundbreaking collaboration has seen them play their music for everybody from the troops in Iraq to both the official President’s Inaugural Ball and the Kids Inaugural in Washington, DC, where Barack Obama himself gave each a hearty hand-shake. Individually and together, Black Violin has collaborated with the likes of P. Diddy, Kanye West, 50 Cent, Tom Petty, Aerosmith, Aretha Franklin and The Eagles.

“Black Violin works hard, but makes it all look like play… Sometimes they play with the intense seriousness of orchestral soloists; at others they fiddle as if at a hoedown; at still others they strum the violin and viola like guitars.” - New York Times

THE WIZARDS OF WINTER Featuring former members of Trans-Siberian Orchestra Saturday, November 28 • 8:00 PM

The Wizards of Winter are an eclectic group of musicians from the Metro NY, NJ, PA region with strong Classical and Progressive Rock influences woven throughout their musical careers. One clear vision originally brought this group of talented performers together in 2010. That was to faithfully reproduce the music of the TransSiberian Orchestra (TSO) and present it in a more intimate setting.

The Wizards now perform a few of TSO’s greatest hits but most of the the concert is comprised of their own original music. The Wizards have had the pleasure of touring with four of the original members of TSO (Tommy Farese, Guy LeMonnier, Tony Gaynor, and Joe Cerisano). Guy LeMonnier joined the band as an official member in 2014. The result of months of practice is always a powerful, tight production that brings audiences to their feet at every performance. The band now regularly sells out 1k-2k seat theaters. 2015 will bring a bigger stage production, and a second album!

The Wizards released their own Christmas Rock Opera album based on entirely original material in 2011. While similar to TSO in its style, the Wizards original material is unique unto itself. 50

WELCOME TO THE COUNT BASIE THEATRE’S

PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY Enroll today - theBasie.org

FALL 2015 WHAT IS THE PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY AT COUNT BASIE THEATRE?

and choral classes continue to bring arts experiences to students in the Red Bank Borough School District and will be expanding to include students in the J.R. Bolger Middle School in Keansburg.

The arts have the ability to create change and impact lives. They are life enhancing, enriching and altering. Our understanding of the importance of exposure to the arts continues to be the driving motivation behind each facet of our art and education programs.

A bus-in program to bring area students into the theatre to experience live performances and the magic of the theatre, will be expanded in the 2015/16 school year as we reach out to create more collaborations and connections with surrounding schools and Ocean County.

Through our partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts we are empowering an ever-growing population of primary and middle school teachers with professional development tools to integrate the arts into their core curriculum. Arts integration fuels creative thinking, and research shows that students are more fully engaged in learning when the arts are used as teaching tools.

Our professional faculty of teaching artists continues to offer programs that challenge, inspire and provide our students of all ages with quality training. Our educational mission as an arts organization is to instill the concepts of creative thinking and effective reasoning, and to inspire out of the box thinking and appreciation of the process as well as the product, while fostering an understanding and appreciation for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels.

In our outreach program into the Monmouth County High Schools, our annual Basie Awards, about to start it’s eleventh season, continues to honor excellence in High School Theatre while fostering an appreciation and love for the arts. Our extensive in- and after-school acting, music

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES New Year’s Eve Extravaganza Thursday, December 31 • 9:00 PM

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes return to the Basie stage for the best New Year’s Eve party in town!

Van Zandt-written “I Don’t Want To Go Home” became Southside’s signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes first achieved prominence in the mid-1970s, emerging from the same New Jersey Shore music scene as his now legendary contemporary and friend Bruce Springsteen. Southside’s first three albums, I Don’t Want To Go Home, This Time It’s for Real, and Hearts of Stone, were produced by band co-founder Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band, The Sopranos), and largely featured songs written by Van Zandt and/or Springsteen. The

In 1982 Rolling Stone Magazine voted Hearts of Stone among the top 100 albums of the 1970s and 1980s. With their classic blend of hard-core R&B and street-level rock, molten grooves, soulful guitar licks and blistering horn section, Johnny and his Jukes continue to put their unique stamp on the Jersey Shore sound, while recalling the glory years of Otis Redding and similar Stax Records titans. 60
