LETTER FROM
ADAM PHILIPSON
President & CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts
In May, with our construction project under way, we knew that we needed to elevate the name of our center to represent all we do as part of our mission and vision. For nearly two decades, the heart and soul of our organization has been not just its world-class performances, but our commitment to arts education. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy, the work in area schools, and our community-centric programming are all complements to our treasured, 92-year old historic theater. You may have noticed that we are building out both sides of our creative campus. To the right of the historic theater – our “west” side, will live the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, which will house five new classrooms and rehearsal spaces, the Rock n’ Rohl Rooftop Lounge, and a long-awaited addition to the region’s performing arts scene: a second venue! Up-and-coming performers of all kinds will have a new home at the Basie, with sit-down and standing-room shows in a modern, state-of-the art performance space. On our “east” side we will expand our lobby with a beautiful, two-story glass building featuring additional concession areas and restrooms, a patron elevator, a new member lounge, and the new outdoor Basie Plaza, which will feature the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, free performances from local artists, a patio bar and more. We are expanding on all sides to create the region’s premier location to inspire, educate and entertain. Welcome to the Count Basie Center for the Arts.

MUSIC OF CREAM 50th Anniversary Tour October 23 • 8PM
Ginger Baker. Jack Bruce. Eric Clapton. Cream was a chemical explosion like no other, the blueprint for every supergroup to follow and the heavy blues precursor to Hendrix, Zeppelin and so much more. Fifty years since their earthshaking debut album, the bloodlines of that hallowed trilogy come together to pay tribute to Cream’s legendary four-album reign over the psychedelic frontier of the late 1960s. Kofi BAKER (son of Ginger) and Malcolm BRUCE (son of Jack) unite with Will JOHNS (nephew of Eric and son of Zeppelin/ Stones/ Hendrix engineer Andy) to unleash the lightning that electrified a generation. Feel the fire and the freedom of “Spoonful”, “Strange Brew”, “Sunshine of Your Love”, “White Room”, “Crossroads” and “Badge” — performed by master musicians whose lives have been steeped in the Cream spirit and legacy.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT A conversation with
JOHN CUSACK
Following a screening of Say Anything September 16 • 7PM
The 1989 comedy/drama “Say Anything” brought popular culture the love story of Lloyd Dobler (actor John Cusack) and Diane Court (actress Ione Skye). An eternal optimist seeks the heart of a “brain trapped in the body of a game show hostess.” Ranked by Entertainment Weekly as one of the greatest modern movie romances (and #11 on the list of 50 best high-school movies), “Say Anything” made a star out of John Cusack who went on to success in multiple films including “High Fidelity,” “Grosse Point Blank,” and “Being John Malkovich,” among others. Now, join John Cusack for a screening of “Say Anything” followed by a LIVE conversation regarding his career and the making of “Say Anything.” Fans will now get the opportunity to experience a moderated discussion, with John answering audience questions as well.
NAPOLEON DYNAMITE: A Conversation with Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez & Jon Gries January 10 • 7:30PM
The beloved indie classic Napoleon Dynamite was made almost 15 years ago. Since then much has changed; but the characters, as enduring as they are endearing, stay in our hearts. Appealing to the inner-teenager in each of us, the story, and more importantly the dialogue, makes Napoleon Dynamite one of the most quoted movies of our time. Napoleon Dynamite makes us laugh – and laugh hard – over and over again. This unique evening includes a full screening of Napoleon Dynamite followed by a lively, freewheeling, moderated discussion with fanfavorite cast members; Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite), Efren Ramirez (Pedro) and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico). This event is BYOT (Bring Your Own Tots). (2004); 1h 36min; Rated: PG

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT An Evening With
DAWES:
PASSWORDS TOUR September 19 • 8PM
In the decade since Dawes emerged from Southern California, the band, consisting of guitarist/singer Taylor Goldsmith, drummer Griffin Goldsmith, bassist Wylie Gelber, and keyboardist Lee Pardini, has evolved and electrified and grown into a forward-thinking band for the 21st century. The result is Passwords, a warm, lived-in album that spotlights Dawes’s strength as a live act while also staying rooted in studio craft and consideration. The album bounces between the familiar territory of guitar-driven indie rock (the anthemic, atmospheric “Living In The Future”); SoCal soul (“My Greatest Invention”); and modern folk (“I Can’t Love,” “Stay Down”), but also embraces a spacier, experimental approach thanks to the band’s newest member, keyboardist Lee Pardini.
An Evening with
PAT METHENY
with Antonio Sanchez, Linda May Han Oh & Gwilym Simcock October 7 • 7:30PM
Pat Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his threeyear stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style, which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility -a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND with special guest
THE OUTLAWS
Friday, September 21 • 7:30PM
In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. Today, the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony/RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of The Marshall Tucker Band sound.

Most notable is the definitive version of Steve Goodman’s The City of New Orleans that was a hit on all major charts. Another critically acclaimed album was Amigo (1976), which includes Massachusetts, honored in 1981 as the official state folk song.

CAPITOL STEPS October 24 • 7:30PM
The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s topperforming live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.
In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son. In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. And today, the Count Basie Theatre has become the Count Basie Center of the Arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. Construction is underway on the west side of the facility, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s as-yet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life. SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT SIMPLE MINDS September 26 • 8PM
Simple Minds are one of the UK’s most successful bands, having achieved six No.1 albums in the UK as well hitting the top spot in countless other territories including Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. “One of the things I’m most proud of is that people say to me what Simple Minds are you talking about? The avant-garde, the art-rock, the pop, the ambient, the instrumental group, the political, the folk, the stadium band? We’ve been on one hell of a journey. To play all those different styles but at the same time be quintessentially Simple Minds is an amazing thing.” Jim Kerr. Taking in the innovative sheen of Promised You A Miracle and Glittering Prize, the anthemic sweep of Waterfront and Sanctify Yourself, the firebrand strand of Belfast Child and Mandela Day and the singalong wonder of Don’t You (Forget About Me) and Alive & Kicking, right up to date with 2014’s phenomenal Big Music album, Simple Minds have been creating a sound-scape for almost 40 years.
THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS Friday, October 19 • 8PM
If you were to dissect the today’s alternative rock music, you’ll find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing seven studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD. Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio scoring a multitude of #1 singles. With the advent of MTV in the early 80’s the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes’ approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented. After a brief hiatus in the 90’s, and a side project called “Love Spit Love”, the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium.

The recipient of a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY Award and an inductee in the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame, he continues to sell-out top concert venues around the world. “Mathis’s voice is still pitch-perfect, and even more remarkably, his range hasn’t changed one iota,” said The Cleveland Plain Dealer in a recent concert review. “Those trademark high notes are just as angelic today as they were back then … his lilting multi-octave voice takes the listener on a drive down Memory Lane, maybe with a little stopover in the back seat of a Studebaker …” BUY TICKETS 24/7

At a point in their career where most artists would be looking to strategically position themselves for even greater commercial success, they instead turned to artistic expression in service of the muse.

AN EVENING WITH BRIAN FALLON WITH SPECIAL GUEST CRAIG FINN Songs From the Hymnal Friday, October 5 • 8PM
SLEEPWALKERS sees Brian Fallon once again pushing timeless rock ‘n’ roll into the modern era, recasting British Invasion rock, first generation UK punk and American pop and soul into a near irresistible sound he’s dubbed “Heavy R&B.” Recorded earlier this year at New Orleans’ Parlor Recording Studio with producer Ted Hutt – the man behind the board for The Gaslight Anthem’s breakthrough, THE ’59 SOUND – the album is perhaps the strongest example yet of Fallon’s always adventurous artistry, with songs like “Forget Me Not” and the brass-blasting title track fit to burst with spirit and light, an intangible magic that draws listeners to the dance floor while also striking chords within their hearts. “I haven’t had this feeling since THE ’59 SOUND,” Fallon says. “When I wrote that record, I was pure. I had no pre-conceived notions. I was following this thing and when it was done I knew it could stand against anyone.” Born and raised in New Jersey and known far and wide as singer/guitarist of The Gaslight Anthem, as well as The Horrible Crowes, Fallon made his long-anticipated solo debut with 2015’s masterful PAINKILLERS. The album – which includes the hit singles, “A Wonderful Life” and “Painkillers” – drew widespread critical applause upon its release, with Rolling Stone noting, “For a guy whose songs have always traded in the pains and pleasures of nostalgia, the Fallon of PAINKILLERS seems to have arrived at a newfound, forward-looking clarity.” BUY TICKETS 24/7

Introducing...
The Count Basie Center for the Arts With construction underway on its celebrated, $27 million expansion, the “Count Basie Theatre” – the top-selling nonprofit performing arts center in New Jersey and one of the top such venues in the U.S. and world – has announced its new name: the Count Basie Center for the Arts. “For 34 years, the ‘Count Basie Theatre’ name has been synonymous with the region’s very best in arts and entertainment,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “We’ve raise the Basie name to represent all that this regional center for the arts stands for: our nonprofit mission of arts and education, our work in schools and the community, and all of the excellence and excitement that comes from that. Today, we are the Count Basie Center for the Arts.” The elevation of Basie’s name preserves the building’s legacy -- and that of William James “Count” Basie, the Red Bank native whose career in jazz crisscrossed the world and put him in front of millions, including command performances for Queen Elizabeth II and President John F. Kennedy. Basie never forgot his roots, returning here in 1983 to perform a benefit concert purposed to build an education center at the A.M.E. Zion Church in Shrewsbury. Basie would pass away several months later in April 1984, with the theater being named in his honor later that year. “With our 2017 groundbreaking, we began our expansion on the west end of our building,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Center Board of Trustees. “Building a creative campus in the heart of Red Bank, with multiple spaces and continuous activity, has long been a dream of our board. It is exciting to see this dream begin to materialize.” (CONTINUED ON PAGE 52)

A New Era, A New Logo
With the name change comes the Basie’s first new logo in decades. Called “Energy,” it was created by Basie Creative Director Andrew Musser, who worked with Basie board member and seasoned marketing executive Bob Chandler and Basie organization leaders and personnel to create the new mark. The logo colors represent the organization’s color palate, meant to mimic the gold, blue and darker tones present upon entering the historic theater. “’ENERGY’ represents the movement of our organization from the four walls of a performance hall to the greater point of a center,” Musser says. “And within that center, performances, arts education, and a diversity of artforms synergize and foster a creative community.” Individuals interested in contributing to the Basie campaign may contact Maria Sorensen, Basie Center Vice President of Development, at msorensen@thebasie.org or 732.224.8778 x 128
