LETTER FROM
President & CEO Count Basie Center for the Arts
BUILDING THE NEW BASIE CENTER A construction update from our President & CEO Thank you for joining us tonight for a performance at the Count Basie Center for the Arts. Your patronage means that the arts are thriving and celebrated in our region! As you approached the Basie this evening, it is hard to miss all the activity happening on either side of our historic facility, and I am excited to share an update on our progress. Five years ago, our Board of Trustees and staff embarked on an ambitious endeavor: to transform our organization into a true regional center for the arts. Last year, we changed our name to reflect this growth and we are now well on our way to building our new expanded facility. This past summer our theater went dark so that upgrades could be made to our stage technology and our backstage spaces. Also during this time, we broke past our historic footprint to connect our existing spaces to the amenities of our new facilities. The entryways to the new grand lobby are right outside this hall, which will soon feature additional bars, restrooms, a new VIP lounge and outdoor balcony, and an elevator— making the theater completely barrier free. Beyond the new lobby will be a gorgeous outdoor plaza, with a stage for smaller performances and plenty of room for our patrons to relax and unwind before and during shows. To the west of the block, our mission and dedication to arts education will finally have a home in the Grunin Arts and Education Building. This facility will include 5 new classrooms, studios, and work spaces to nurture creativity and innovation. Atop the building, the Rock n’ Rohl rooftop lounge will give our guests a new and exciting social space to gather. The west side will also house the Basie Center’s exciting multi-purpose second venue, the details of which we’ll be announcing shortly. So much has been achieved so far. In fact, you can take a sneak peek into the construction site upstairs and watch as we continue to build the Basie Center’s future!

The five seasoned, well-respected musicians comprising Tusk have been making music together in various combinations and styles, in original outfits and in cover bands, for over twenty-five years. It seemed only fitting that they should come together to form the Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute, and pay homage to a group that dominated the charts during the band members’ formative years. Authentic-sounding and always respectful, Tusk leaves no stone unturned in replicating the sounds of one of the world’s bestloved, top-selling bands.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT Good To Be Bad Tour 45 Years of Rock
GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS Special guest Damon Fowler Friday, September 27 • 8PM
Since 1975, they’ve sold over 15 million albums, built a classic catalog of hits, and played more than 8,000 ferocious live shows. They broke records with their 50 Dates/50 States tour, delivered landmark performances at Live Aid and on SNL, and became mainstays of radio, MTV and stages worldwide for more than two generations. Through it all, they’ve remained one of the most consistent – and consistently passionate – progenitors of blues-based rock in pop culture history. For the past 45 years, it’s been very good to be George Thorogood & The Destroyers. Their Good To Be Bad Tour: 45 Years Of Rock will prove why like never before. “If you’re content, you may as well be dead.” George laughs with his familiar rasp. “I think everyone has thoughts about retiring, but the phone keeps ringing. You want me and The Destroyers to come to your town, set up our gear, wear some badass clothes and play ‘Who Do You Love?’ End of conversation. Let’s rock!”
BUDDY GUY November 11 • 8PM
The title of Buddy Guy’s latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. The legendary blues artist’s eighteenth solo LP and follow-up to 2015’s Born to Play Guitar showcases his raw and unadulterated sound, its fifteen tracks a true pleasure for aficionados and genre newcomers alike. “I got children and grandchildren who didn’t know who I was, but nowadays we can play outdoor concerts and see kids that are eight, nine, twelve years old coming to me and saying,‘I didn’t know who you was, but I read what Eric Clapton said about you,’” Guy explains when discussing his mindset around the new record. “I’m always trying to make an album that someone accidentally plays where some kid hears it, picks up a guitar, and helps keep the blues alive.” And it only takes one listen to The Blues Is Alive and Well to realize that Guy’s mission has been more than accomplished here. The record is arriving on the heels of a spate of high visibility for the 82-yearold performer: at the 2016 Grammys, he picked up a trophy for “Best Blues Album” honoring Born to Play Guitar, and that same year he hit the road for a U.S. tour opening for Jeff Beck.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer. In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.
In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that reflect the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a blocklong creative campus. The west side expansion is underway, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s asyet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, work has started to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrierfree amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. And recently, Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center lead to the renaming of its historic theater. At 93 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

LITTLE FEAT
50th Anniversary Tour October 24 • 8PM This year marks Little Feat’s Fiftieth (Golden) Anniversary and yes, they remain a golden and possibly the last example of what used to be the norm in American music: a fusion of a broad span of styles and genres into something utterly distinctive. Feat took California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, rockabilly, and New Orleans swamp boogie and more, stirred it into a rich gumbo, and has been leading people in joyful dance ever since. And it all began because in 1969 Frank Zappa was smart enough to fire Lowell George from the Mothers of Invention and tell him to start a band of his own. Lowell first settled on keyboard wizard Bill Payne, then added drummer Richie Hayward and bassist Roy Estrada (also a Zappa vet). They were quickly signed by Warner Bros., and began working on the first of 12 albums with that venerable company. The name was part of the legend. A member of the Mothers happened to mention Lowell’s small feet to him “with an expletive,” said Paul Barrere. “Lowell deleted the expletive and the name was born with Feat instead of Feet, just like the Beatles. Neat, huh?”

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT A TUBA TO CUBA: THE PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND with Yusa and Special Guests October 23 • 7:30PM A Tuba To Cuba is as much a soundtrack to our documentary as it is a collection of songs that we wrote and recording during the filming and after its completion. The writing and recording of our previous release, “So It Is” began before our first trip to Cuba in 2015. We had no idea that it would become the album it would until we returned home from that first trip. The “A Tuba To Cuba” soundtrack is comprised of a combination of songs that are both in the movie and new songs that aren’t in the film or couldn’t have been in the film because not until we were able to watch it ourselves, we were again inspired to put that spirit into new music. Our five years exploring the Cuba/NOLA history has been inspiring to say the least.
ARTRAGEOUS The Interactive Art & Music Experience October 22 • 7:30PM Artrageous is a Music & Arts Community based in the High Desert of New Mexico. They believe in bringing people together through the power and passion of the Arts. Their art works are in private and public collections around the world. For the first time on one stage – the Fine Arts meet the Performing arts. Experience the thrill of witnessing giant masterpieces being created before your eyes in mere moments and join the challenge to see if you can guess what is being created. Artrageous artists use bold colours with hands and brushes as they are inspired by the troupe’s vocalists, musicians and dancers as they race to complete the paintings before the last note. Artrageous is a totally unique concept that invites community and a sense of togetherness as the whole show culminates in a one of a kind Live Arts Installation at the end of each concert. Audiences interact with the Gallery, the Performers and even add their own art. Let’s celebrate together.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT ASTRAL WEEKS & BEYOND: CELEBRATING VAN MORRISON Friday, October 25 • 8PM
“No one involved in the sessions can boast that they knew they were making a masterpiece, It wasn’t until years later that people started to come up to me and tell me that their lives had been changed by Astral Weeks” – Robert Schwaid (producer). “Astral Weeks was like a religion to us.” – Steven Van Zandt “Astral Weeks is still the most adventurous record made in the rock medium”. – Elvis Costello Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks was released to little fanfare 50 years ago, yet the album endures today as the artist’s finest achievement. Morrison recorded his sublime, eight-song masterpiece with the help of New York’s finest session players, some of whom will be on stage October 25th when the Basie Center presents Astral Weeks and Beyond.
DEAD ON LIVE 65-95, ALL THE YEARS COMBINE Saturday, October 26 • 8PM
Dead On Live returns to the Count Basie Center for the Arts for their annual Halloween season Grateful Dead show. This year DOL will present a multimedia historical overview of the Dead’s rich and stylistically diverse 30-year career. From the earliest jugband beginnings, through the acid-drenched 60’s, Americana roots, Jam-based Jazz explorations to their 80’s brush with the Top 10, Dead On Live will faithfully recreate the classic album cuts and infamous live versions that defined the Grateful Dead. All presented in DOL’s truly unique, note for note, as played by the Dead format. You’ll hear Phil’s rootless syncopations, Weir’d guitar rhythms, Billy and Micky driving drum army and of course, the heart and soul of Jerry Garcia. Join DOL for a sonic journey through the 30-year long strange trip that was the Grateful Dead.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT THE CAPITOL STEPS
We put the Mock in Democracy Sunday, October 27 • 4PM The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT MARSHALL TUCKER BAND WITH SPECIAL GUESTS THE OUTLAWS November 7 • 7:30PM
In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed. Today, the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony/RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of The Marshall Tucker Band sound.

Frankie’s first new studio album in 15 years, Romancing The ’60s, puts his own stamp on some of his favorite ’60s songs, the ones he always wanted to record but somehow got away. Produced by Bob Gaudio, an original member of the Four Seasons and Frankie’s long-time partner, the set includes unforgettable new versions of such gems as “Spanish Harlem,” “Call Me” and “Take Good Care of My Baby.”

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT The Annual New Years Eve Extravaganza
SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES December 31 • 9PM
Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes return to Red Bank for the best New Year’s Eve party in town! Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes first achieved prominence in the mid-1970s, emerging from the same New Jersey Shore music scene as his now legendary contemporary and friend Bruce Springsteen. Southside’s first three albums, I Don’t Want To Go Home, This Time It’s for Real, and Hearts of Stone, were produced by band co-founder Steven Van Zandt (E Street Band, The Sopranos), and largely featured songs written by Van Zandt and/or Springsteen. The Van Zandt-written “I Don’t Want To Go Home” became Southside’s signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics.
THE ELVIS BIRTHDAY BASH Friday, January 24 • 7:30PM
Actor and musician Scot Bruce kicks off the Elvis Birthday Bash with his 50’s era Elvis show. His uncanny resemblance to the young “King” has taken his live show across the U.S. and all over the world. Recently, he had the honor of performing with the legendary Jordanaires (Elvis’ original backup singers). He also performs at Disneyland on a regular basis, and tours with the ‘Legends of Rock & Roll – Buddy, Roy & Elvis.’ Mike Albert, “The World’s Finest Elvis Impressionist,” plays the second half of the evening. His sincere, respectful portrayal of “The King” has earned endorsements by Elvis Presley’s own musicians and back-up singers. He regularly performs with the Jordanaires, and his style, charisma and ability to get the audience involved in the show have proved to be quite the crowd pleaser. Mike makes it a point to keep The Elvis Birthday Bash fresh with an everchanging song line-up. Special requests are often delivered to audiences who are “All Shook Up”!
