A Letter from Tom Widener

Chairman, Board of Trustees & Directors, Count Basie Theatre

Dear Patron: Thank you for joining us tonight at the historic Count Basie Theatre. We are delighted that you are here! The Basie ended its fiscal year on June 30th with a bang. June was a very successful fundraising month for the theatre, built around our summer gala week that began with an excellent show by Norah Jones and concluded with the legendary, 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Daryl Hall and John Oates. Many thanks are due to WithumSmith+Brown, our honoree at this year’s galas, in recognition of the firm’s longstanding generosity to the Basie and to our community. Special recognition is due to WithumSmith+Brown partner and Basie board member Dave Springsteen, who helps the Basie execute its community mission daily. These gala concerts were immediately followed by the Charles Lafitte Foundation Charity Golf Classic at Baltusrol Golf Club. Many thanks to the Charles Lafitte Foundation for its generosity to the Basie -- specifically by helping to build an endowment to fund our Arts Education and Outreach Programs, via its match of every dollar raised through the golf outing. As we look forward, I am very optimistic about all that is happening at the Basie. The theme of this edition of Showtime is “Beach Days, Basie Nights”. I cannot think of a better mantra for all of us lucky enough to live at or near the Jersey Shore. Here at the Basie, we’ll continue to do our part by bringing in a variety of great entertainment, running a world-class arts education program here at the theatre and in area schools, and driving economic activity throughout Red Bank and the entire Shore region. The Count Basie Theatre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, and as such, we couldn’t achieve these great things without you. We appreciate your continued support – from attending shows and participating in our membership program, to supporting our fundraising events and making every day donations to the theatre. Please enjoy tonight’s show and we look forward to seeing you again, many times.

THE MAVERICKS

MONO MUNDO TOUR 2015 Tuesday, June 23, 2015, 8:00 PM

Grammy winner Raul Malo and his musical comrades believe in bringing people together – often in the name of good times and great music – which is the most universal language of all. “One of the things we love about our shows is we get all walks of life, all ages, all colors, all politics, all genders, all religions,” frontman Malo states.

ups and reformations, The Mavericks recorded their critically-acclaimed album IN TIME and re-introduced music lovers to the band’s genre-defying melting pot of pop music. With the new release of MONO, The Mavericks find themselves making the most relevant music of their career. While in the studio to record the new album, the band realized that their songs required a different approach. They felt drawn toward the idea of creating an album that shines through its songwriting and instrumentation in a singular mindset without relying on stereo tricks of modern recording – so the idea of recording in mono was born.

From their earliest shows as a garage band playing the punk clubs on Miami Beach, The Mavericks have had a skill for getting people to groove. Drawing on a mix of classic country, cow-punk and standards, Malo and company left South Florida, bringing their rhythmic fervor and Latin machismo, along with Malo’s lush baritone, to the world. In 2013, after numerous years as a band, multiple gold and platinum albums, world tours, break-

Please note: A Mavericks show is a veritable party -- audience members will be standing and dancing for much if not all the show. Please keep this in mind when purchasing tickets. 8

JACKSON BROWNE

A special Two-Night Stand at the Basie Monday, September 21, 2015, 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 22, 2015, 8:00 PM

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne is on the second leg of his 2015 U.S. Summer tour to support his new album, Standing In The Breach. Standing In The Breach, Jackson’s new studio album, is a collection of ten songs, at turns deeply personal and political, exploring love, hope, and defiance in the face of the advancing uncertainties of modern life.

Jackson Browne has written and performed some of the most literate and moving songs in popular music and has defined a genre of songwriting charged with honesty, emotion and personal politics. He was honored with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2007.

ROB THOMAS

with special guests Plain White T’s Friday, July 31, 2015, 8:00 PM Saturday, August 1, 2015, 8:00 PM

Rob Thomas has been one of modern music’s most compelling and commercially successful artists for well over a decade. Between Matchbox Twenty, his solo work, and his various collaborations with iconic artists like Santana, Mick Jagger and Willie Nelson, his tally now stands at more than 80 million albums sold

worldwide. Arguably the most accomplished singer/ songwriter of his generation, it all comes back to the creative source for Rob. As he says with typical understatement, “I’m a guy who hears songs in his head, and I have to write them down, and I have to get them out. I’m just lucky enough that I can make it my life’s work.” Thank You 12

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org

“WEIRD AL” YANKOVIC THE MANDATORY WORLD TOUR Tuesday, July 28, 2015, 8:00 PM

Weird Al released his 14th studio album Mandatory Fun on last July. The album features parodies of some of the biggest hits of the past year, including Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” (“Tacky”), Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (“Word Crimes”), Lorde’s “Royals” (“Foil”), Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” (“Handy”) and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” (“Inactive”). Mandatory Fun debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. This is the first time that a comedy album has debuted at #1 on the chart in history, and the first time that a comedy album has reached the top of the chart in over 50 years.

Few would have guessed that “Weird Al” Yankovic, who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show, would go on to become the biggest-selling comedy recording artist in history with over 12 million album sales. Now in his fourth career decade, he has won three Grammys (with 14 nominations) and countless awards and accolades for Weird Al classics like “Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Fat,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise” and “The Saga Begins.”

Weird Al, along with his band of over three decades, has performed thousands of live rock and comedy multimedia shows throughout the world, and will be back on the road in 2015 for The Mandatory Word Tour. 34

Matt O’Ree DEEP PURPLE

Now What?! Tour Wednesday, July 29, 2015, 8:00 PM

With an ever-increasing fanbase, and picking up new listeners around the world thanks to their drive to tour familiar and less-traveled places, it’s no wonder Deep Purple operates on fresh cycles of adrenaline. No resting on yesteryear. Deep Purple has released four studio albums since 1996, but that total is augmented by an abundance of solo work and special projects from all 5 band members.

1973 catapulted Deep Purple to the top in concert grosses and album sales around the world. “Smoke On The Water” ascended to mega-status — simply a perfect track. Having amassed so many songs that get coined under the “classic” moniker, setlists have been a never-ending debate among diehards and newer fans. But Deep Purple have been more than in synch with fans’ tastes to remain a powerful drawing force since their formation in 1968.

Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Steve Morse and Don Airey - “Mark VIII” of the band - continue to travel the scope of hard rock — the textures and nuances of recent works are anything but thudding retreads. If you set a random play setting for the band’s entire catalog, the result is one of the finest musical outputs to grace rock music.

Opener: THE MATT O’REE BAND Growing up on influences ranging from Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Rory Gallagher, ZZ Top, Robin Trower, Joe Walsh and Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Matt O’Ree Band has taken all these diverse elements and forged a new iron. Matt’s writing is inspired from many life experiences and years of study from the ones that have wrote the book on how to play real guitar rock music. Not as a photocopy, but in a new light that hasn’t been seen in quite some time. Now is the time for real music and real musicianship to make a resurrection.

The latter-year Purple has moved progressively into new areas, piquing fans’ interest who were not born when the mighty Purple machine ruled the music world’s money trees. Their holy grail of In Rock (1970) Machine Head (1972) and Made In Japan released in 36

REFLECTIONS: THE MUSIC OF DIANA ROSS starring JILLIAN RHYS McCOY The Basie’s Emerging Artist Series at the Two River Theater Thursday, August 13, 2015, 8:00 PM

In a career that spans more than two decades and features a resume that includes performances with Jon Bon Jovi, Joan Jett, Darlene Love, Tommy James, Gary U.S. Bonds and more, maybe it’s illogical to call Jillian Rhys McCoy an emerging artist.

town soul of the 1960s to the pop and disco anthems of her solo career.” Reflections will run the gamut of Ross’ career, from Supremes classics like “Baby Love” and “Stop! In The name Of Love” to her solo hits like “Upside Down” or “I’m Coming Out.”

But one thing’s for certain: Her time is now. Fresh off a string of sold-out shows at Tim McLoone’s Supper Club in Asbury Park (“Shadows Of The Night: Chicks Who Rocked The 80s,” “Yesterday Once More: Remembering The Carpenters”), Oceanport native McCoy takes the stage at the Two River Theater August 13th in Reflections: The Music of Diana Ross, the first of the Count Basie Theatre’s Emerging Artists series.

“With Reflections, we’ll pay homage to a woman whose voice and classy temperament literally changed the game. It’s a night of soul, but it’s also a night of tribute to one of music’s all-time greatest divas.” Joining Jillian onstage is a veritable who’s-who of accomplished area musicians, from Layonne Holmes (vocals), Graham Maby (bass), Arne Wendt (keyboards), John Merjave (guitar / vocals) and special guests.

“Diana Ross is an artist I’ve always admired and looked up to,” says McCoy. “She has a sweet sound – but she’s also very soulful, with a dynamic range of voice that covers all of the music she’s performed, from the Mo-

Academy Award winner Steven Wright is a prototype comedian that many others continually try to follow. Steven got his big break when he was booked for his first Tonight Show appearance in 1982. Boney James

Saturday, August 19, 2015, 8:00 PM

Four-time GRAMMY nominee and multi-platinum selling sax-man Boney James continues his artistic evolution with the dynamic futuresoul, released in May on Concord Records. Fusing his love for vintage soul music with his mastery of modern production, Boney has created another genre-bending work following on the heels of his 2014 GRAMMY-nominated album The Beat.

His 15th CD, futuresoul contains 10 original songs produced and written or co-written by James. The project features vocalist and Mint Condition frontman Stokley on “Either Way,” a collaboration enabled by Twitter. Says James, “Like my recent duet with Raheem DeVaughn, I was able to meet Stokley on Twitter and send him the music for this track. He wrote the brilliant lyric and sent me a finished vocal all via email!”

“The forms I’m working with are rooted in my early influences,” says James, dropping names like King Curtis, the Stylistics and Earth, Wind & Fire. “But recently I’ve been listening to contemporary artists like Tinashé, Sam Smith and Ellie Goulding, and I’m inspired by the sound of their recordings.”

Also featured is rising-star trumpet player Marquis Hill (2014 winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition) on the plaintive “Far From Home.”

Graham Nash

Saturday, August 22, 2015, 8:00 PM

Legendary singer-songwriter GRAHAM NASH is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee-with Crosby, Stills, and Nash and with the Hollies. He was also inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame twice, as a solo artist and with CSN, and he is a GRAMMY Award winner.

and philanthropist, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth. While continually building his musical legacy, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and visual artist. With his photography, Nash has drawn honors including the New York Institute of Technology’s Arts & Technology Medal and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and the Hollywood Film Festival’s inaugural Hollywood Visionary Cyber Award. His work is collected in the book Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash; he curated others’ work in the volume Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash (2009).

Nash’s passionate voice continues to be heard in support of peace, and social and environmental justice. The No Nukes/Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) concerts he organized with Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt in 1979 remain seminal benefit events. In 2011, Nash was instrumental in bringing MUSE back to the forefront with a concert to benefit Japan disaster relief and groups promoting non-nuclear energy worldwide.

Nash’s work has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. His company Nash Editions’ original IRIS 3047 digital printer and one of its first published works—Nash’s 1969 portrait of David Crosby— is now housed in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition of his revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts and digital printing world.

In September 2013, Nash released his long-awaited autobiography Wild Tales, which delivers an engrossing, no-holds-barred look back at his remarkable career and the music that defined a generation. The book landed him on the New York Times best sellers list, and will be released in paperback format this fall.

He is currently working on a new studio record.

In recognition for his contributions as a musician 66
