LETTER FROM

ADAM PHILIPSON

CEO and President Count Basie Theatre

Friends, It is my continued privilege to welcome you to the historic Count Basie Theatre. Today’s performance on the Asbury Park Press Stage is part of our exciting season carefully curated to be sure we are reaching our audiences with diverse programs. This year we received amazing news that your treasured Basie is the number one venue in the Garden State. That means more people come through our doors than any other seated theatre venue in New Jersey. And for that matter number 24 in the world. There are many ingredients to this success: great staff, great shows, great town and great marketing. But the key ingredient, the one constant that without would make those accolades impossible, is you. So please allow me on behalf of our staff and Board of Trustees to thank you for this esteemed honor. Thank you for coming to the shows. Thank you for sharing the news with your friends. Thank you for supporting the arts in Monmouth County. When you support our shows you support our not for profit mission of bringing diverse programs to the region that includes jazz, Celtic music, dance, Country, world, folk, and theater at the Basie – where it belongs. And you also support our state-wide recognized education and outreach programs that include classes here on site and in neighboring schools, sensory friendly programs, the Basie Awards, JazzArts, Rockit and our new CBT Voices. There is so much good news recently and many updates including progress on our Capital Campaign to build our future presenting, education and cultural arts center. We invite you to take a look at our website which will be updated within the next 30 days. Stay tuned! The arts are part of what makes a town a thriving community hotspot and we thank you for making the Basie your choice for entertainment, education and culture!

GLEN BURTNIK’S SUMMER OF LOVE CONCERT Friday, March 31 • 8PM

Glen Burtnik’s Summer of Love Concert - A Tribute to the Music of the Woodstock Generation will be Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love - 1967, focusing on musical highlights of that year (as well as great songs from 1968 and 1969) which unofficially kicked off with the release of The Beatles Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band plus the release of many seminal rock albums including The Doors: The Doors, Jefferson Airplane: Surrealistic Pillow, The Rolling Stones: Between The Buttons and Their Santanic Majesties Request, Procol Harum: Procol Harum, The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are You Experienced along with singles like “Creeque Alley” by the Mama’s and The Papa’s, “San Francisco” by Scott McKenzie, “The Letter” by The Box Tops, “To Sir, with Love” by Lulu, “Darlin’ Be Home Soon” by The Lovin’ Spoonful, “I Was Made To Love Her” by Stevie Wonder, “Happly Together” by The Turtles and many others…

THE FAB FAUX The Musical

Saturday, June 17 • 8PM With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music with unwavering respect, and are known for their painstaking recreations of the songs. Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Imagine hearing complex material like “Strawberry Fields Forever” or “I Am the Walrus” performed in complete partperfect renditions; or such harmony-driven songs as “Because,” “Nowhere Man,” and “Paperback Writer” reproduced not only note-for-note, but with extra vocalists to achieve a double-tracked effect. Approaching the songs with the intent of playing them live as accurately in musical reading and in spirit as possible, The Faux’s breathtaking performances tend to dispel all concertgoers’ previous notions of a Beatles tribute act.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. 12th Annual

BASIE AWARDS HONORING EXCELLENCE IN HIGH SCHOOL THEATRE

MAY 24, 2017 The annual Basie Awards is Count Basie Theatre’s assessment and evaluation program, patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, to honor excellence in Monmouth County high school theatre. The growth we’ve seen in the level of professionalism from each of the 27 participating schools -- from larger attendances at productions to growth in support for theater departments from parents and administration members -- is testimony to the positive impact the Basie Awards have provided to the community. We’re confident that the primary motivators for those involved in the awards process are the inherent, intrinsic rewards – and not just the momentary thrill of receiving an accolade or trophy.

Celebrating 100 Years of Sinatra Sunday, May 14 • 4PM

Enjoy the sounds of the Sinatra classics you know and love in a celebration of 100 years of Old Blue Eyes. Michael Martocci is a local talent from just over the bridge in New Jersey. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Martocci grew up with Frank Sinatra as a staple in his household. The sounds of his singing will bring back cherished memories. Michael lets this audience know that he is NOT a SINATRA IMPERSONATOR. You would have to be crazy to think that anyone can be Frank Sinatra. He simply does these concerts to keep the music alive and make sure his grandkids will know the name and the music of Frank Sinatra. As a young adult Michael traveled the world with Frank Sinatra serving as his host for pre-concert VIP events prior to the show. Michael last performed his Sinatra tribute show last May at the Basie to a SOLD OUT enthusiastic crowd.

BOBFEST

War & Peace The Music of Bob Dylan May 25 • 8PM

The 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to the kid from Minnesota who asked, “How many deaths will it take ‘til he knows that too many people have died?” Bob Dylan assured us that the answer was Blowin’ in the Wind, and encouraged us all to look for it. On Thursday May 25th, The Count Basie Theatre will recognize the Poets 76th birthday and his esteemed achievement at BobFest, the annual celebration once called Red Banks Hippest Musical Event. This year’s show will focus on Dylan’s songs of War and Peace with the words that empowered a generation to ask questions and seek answers delivered by Pat Guadagno, as only he can deliver. The Lobby will be adorned with artwork and memorabilia, the stage alive with Dylan’s music performed by Pat and his remarkable band, Tired Horses. Even the outside patio bar will rock as a pre-show cocktail party with recording artist Frank Lombardi kicks off at 7:05 PM BUY TICKETS 24/7

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T BUDDY GUY May 17 • 8PM

At age 79, Buddy Guy is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. In 1957, he took his guitar to Chicago, where he would permanently alter the direction of the instrument, first on numerous sessions for Chess Records playing alongside Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and the rest of the label’s legendary roster, and then on recordings of his own.

STEPHEN STILLS & JUDY COLLINS August 19 • 8PM

50 years ago, singer-songwriter Stephen Still met singer-songwriter Judy Collins, known for her piercing ocean blue eyes. Their tumultuous love affair would later be immortalized by Stills with his composition “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” performed by Crosby, Stills & Nash on their landmark debut. Both artists would go on to shape modern music with visionary approaches, but Stills and Collins’ short fiery union remains a transformative era for the two artists. For this once in a lifetime experience, the two music legends will pull from their rich catalogs, debut songs from their upcoming album, due out Summer of 2017, and share warm and intimate stories from their journeys and the 1960s folk and Laurel Canyon scenes they helped build.

Utilizing the multiinstrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants…a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity.

BLONDIE & GARBAGE

The Rage and Rapture Tour Friday, July 28 • 8PM

Blondie “Here comes the 21st Century,” Debbie Harry assuredly sang nearly three decades ago on her solo disc Def, Dumb And Blonde, “it’s gonna be so much better for a girl like me.” With the turn of the century well behind us now, that gleeful prediction has certainly come true: Singersongwriter Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke and their band-mates in Blondie are undeniable pop icons, their sound and sensibility as fresh as when they first topped the charts in the late 1970s. Garbage In the spring of 2013, the members of Garbage Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Butch Vig gathered in Los Angeles to start work on their sixth studio album. Except the recording didn’t begin in a studio, per se. It began where so many bands first do: in a basement.

Not Today Satan Tour Saturday, June 3 • 8PM

Celebrate Pride Weekend! Bianca Del Rio, the alter ego of comic Roy Haylock and season 6 winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is a self-professed “clown in a gown.” This hilariously hateful comic is known for her foul mouth and unapologetic humor, but her victims hardly have time to feel the sting before she zips on to the next topic. Besides, Bianca is quick to point out that she’s the biggest joke of all. The NY Times calls her “The Joan Rivers of the Drag World,” and Joan herself called Bianca’s humor “So funny! So sharp!” Her standup comedy special “Rolodex of Hate” was produced by Vimeo as part of their first original programming slate and is now available worldwide on Vimeo and in the US on Logo TV. Bianca released her first featured film “Hurricane Bianca,” produced by Wolfe Releasing in 2016 which is available on itunes, and touring her new global comedy tour, “Not Today Satan.”
