Welcome to the show tonight and welcome to the historic Count Basie Center!

We are excited about our future. Not for just our shows, classes at the Basie Center Academy, or our films and other events at Basie Center Cinemas, but for our neighbors: 2023 is the year the Count Basie Center reaches deeper into the community.

With your support and resilience, we made it through the pandemic by staying true to our mission of providing the arts and opportunities in arts education to the masses.

And now, beyond our two venues and Academy of the Arts classrooms, The Basie will strive for an even greater purpose, called The Giving Year.

The Giving Year is our 12-month long initiative with our partners at Bank of America. In a nutshell, you - the Count Basie Center patron - will be helping us help the community by taking $1 from every ticket sold in 2023 and donating it to one of 12 area nonprofits. As a nonprofit ourselves, we understand the value and importance of community leaders and grassroots efforts to make the world a better place. Already this year, the Basie Center and Bank of America have acknowledged mental wellness nonprofit ShoreHouse (www.shorehousenj.org), family and youth empowerment organization Inspire Life (www.weinspirelife.org) and our local Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (www.sptsusa.org) for their important work in the area. And as 2023 progresses, we’ll recognize even more important causes and concerns, and the people responsible for making our community a better place. If you have a favorite area nonprofit you feel should benefit during The Giving Year, have them visit www.thebasie.org/thegivingyear for more information and an application.

The arts help audiences build deeper relationships through empathy and understanding, finding joy, and immerse in the ecstatic buzz of great artistry. It is our hope that by providing funding and visibility to these and other community nonprofits, that The Giving year will follow suit. The best part is -- you’re part of it. By purchasing a Basie Center ticket in 2023, you’re not just helping our mission, you’re helping us amplify the important nonprofit work of others. Thank you -- and, as always, enjoy the show!

Through our Forever For Everyone endowment campaign, the Basie Center is working toward providing access, education and inspiration to all. We firmly believe the arts enrich our community and this endowment campaign will allow the Basie Center to continue its mission to embrace and amplify positive change and ensure inclusion and access for everyone.

“As a young musician, I took piano classes at the Basie Center Academy, which helped strengthen and influenced my love for jazz. Today, I’m serving as honorary chair of the Count Basie Center’s Forever For Everyone campaign, to help provide hundreds of yearly scholarships to kids and families with interests similar to my own.”

“It’s more than just concerts at The Basie Center – their classes and arts education experiences teach not just performance skills, but also critical life skills like confidence, tolerance, teamwork, and collaboration. I’m honored to have a role in the institution that helped me grow as a musician.”

We invite you to learn more about our endowment campaign and how you can support the Count Basie Center for the Arts to create a more diverse and equal world.

History

Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie Center performer, has long praised its historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.”

For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theatre, touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so many treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes.

In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton.

In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center.

Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.”

Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz artist William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie returned several times in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.

In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.

In years to come, the Basie Center would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to Inspire, Educate and Entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that amplify and embrace the diversity of the region.

The Basie’s Academy of the Arts has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored.

In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a block-long creative campus.Today, that expansion is complete, with the Grunin Arts and Education Building housing rehearsal studios, classrooms and a home for the Basie Center Academy, along with The Vogel, the Basie Center’s new state-of-the-art performance venue. On the facility’s east side, our spacious, glass-lined lobby features new concessions and restroom facilities and barrier-free amenities and upgrades. The warm glow of the lobby shines upon the beautiful Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which offers entrance to the William and Catherine Basie Arts Plaza. And our historic theatre, named to commemorate Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center, is as beautiful and grand as ever.

As we approach our 100th anniversary, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing arts and arts education. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

So notes Jeremy Grunin, Chairperson of the Basie Center’s Board of Trustees, the governing body which oversees operations of Basie Center’s performance venues, arts academy, classical music conservatory, community theatre company... and all the other vital pieces that fold into the nonprofit’s community profile.

“In addition to our work in arts education, from classrooms in under-resourced communities to professional development opportunities for teachers,” Grunin recognizes, “we have worldrenowned performing artists on our stages almost every evening.”

“We recognize the platform that affords us, and we feel it’s right to use that platform to highlight other organizations attending to vital causes in our region.”

Enter THE GIVING YEAR.

THE GIVING YEAR is the Basie Center and Bank of America’s yearlong initiative to bring recognition and financial support to 12 area nonprofits doing important work in and around our community. THE GIVING YEAR will last throughout 2023, with the Basie Center donating $1 from every ticket sold, with a different nonprofit highlighted each month. Organizations are eligible to receive up to $15,000 during their month, in addition to complimentary tickets for distribution to their volunteers and / or their beneficiaries.

THE GIVING YEAR kicked off in January, with Basie Center patrons raising $15,000 for ShoreHouse (www.shorehousenj.org), a mental wellness nonprofit located in Long Branch. Shore House is the only organization in the state accredited by Clubhouse International, the governing body that has revolutionized care and awareness for mental illness worldwide.

“This grant will help us meet a growing demand for our services,” said Richard Ambrosino, Executive Director of Shore House. “Our membership has nearly doubled over the last year, and because we’re the only organization providing these types of services, we expect that growth to continue.”

Asbury Park-based youth and family empowerment nonprofit Inspire Life (www.weinspirelife.org) was

chosen as February’s beneficiary, and at press time, the Basie Center and Bank of America announced that the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (www.sptsusa.org), based in Freehold, would be THE GIVING YEAR’s recipient for the month of March.

“Bank of America and the Count Basie Center share many causes and concerns, especially the betterment of our communities,” said Alberto Garofalo, Market President, Bank of America New Jersey. “During ‘The Giving Year,’ we’ll use our longstanding partnership and platforms to highlight and reward the efforts of twelve area nonprofit organizations, whose commitments to our region help those who need it the most.”

“Part of our responsibility as a nonprofit organization is to look inwards and say, ‘What more can we do?’” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “Last month, we teamed with Charlie Puth to launch our ‘Forever For Everyone’ endowment campaign, which will offer hundreds of Basie Center Academy scholarships in perpetuity to students interested in the arts.”

“And because we have this status as a place where world-class musicians, actors and performers come to play, we also have this opportunity – and responsibility – to lend our visibility to others. Bank of America and the Basie Center want THE GIVING YEAR to become a pedestal for organizations that deserve to have their hard work and purposes known and recognized.”

If there’s an area cause you love or feel could benefit during THE GIVING YEAR, have that organization visit www.thebasie.org/thegivingyear and fill out the quick application for consideration.
