IT’S BEEN AWHILE It’s been awhile.

Survival of not just the ability to see a live performance, but survival of the Basie Center’s nonprofit mission of arts education, and our motto to Inspire, Educate and Entertain. The pandemic hit just a few months before we were set to unveil the all-new Count Basie Center for the Arts, a $28 million expansion which doubled our footprint by expanding our lobby, adding an entire building dedicated to arts education, and creating a second performance space called The Vogel.

As the weather gets warmer, we welcome the return of summer to the Jersey Shore, and the resumption of live, outdoor concerts. Last summer, the Count Basie Center organization was one of the first in in North America to produce drive-in concerts, followed by a series of live, “supper-club” style performances featuring everyone from comedian Kevin Hart to indie rock band The Lone Bellow.

Since the onset of the pandemic, we have proudly – and diligently – looked for ways to work around the inability to gather en masse at our home in Red Bank. Our arts education programs quickly found a home online, where they continue to flourish alongside our safe, socially-distant education programs onsite at the Basie Center’s new Grunin Arts Education Building.

We’re back at it this summer with Concerts On The Green at Suneagles Golf Course in Eatontown and our onsite, outdoor series in Red Bank called Concerts On The Plaza. Our goal with these shows – as well as our limited-capacity performances at The Vogel – is simple: Survival.

When Governor Murphy announced a limited-capacity allowance for performing arts spaces, we quickly opened The Vogel. And have since sold nearly 15,000 tickets – 150 maximum per show – to performances with everyone from roots rocker Grace Potter to comedian Jim Breuer. We also unveiled Basie Center Cinemas at 36 White Street in Red Bank, just a few blocks east of the Basie. In other words, we’re in this. As we wait patiently for the governor to afford performing arts theaters the same freedoms that have been given to gyms and restaurants, we are doing what it takes to keep the Basie Center mission alive. We’re grateful for our partners at

Suneagles Golf Course for allowing us to create another summer of the area’s best, safe, socially-distant performances. We’re giving fans a chance to catch a glimpse of the new Basie Center with Concerts On The Plaza and our ongoing schedule at The Vogel. And over at Basie Center Cinemas, we’ll have everything from blockbusters to indie flicks, all summer long. This is all to keep us on our toes for the eventual – and we believe soon – reopening of the Basie’s historic Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre. Visit www.thebasie.org for our entire late-summer and fall lineups! Until then, thank you for coming out. Enjoy your evening out and continue supporting the arts!

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer. In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.

In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that reflect the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Academy of the Arts has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revival-style, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a blocklong creative campus. The west side expansion is underway, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s asyet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, work has started to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrierfree amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. And recently, Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center lead to the renaming of its historic theater. At 93 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

GET THE LED OUT

From the bombastic and epic, to the folky and mystical, Get The Led Out (GTLO) have captured the essence of the recorded music of Led Zeppelin and brought it to the concert stage. The Philadelphia-based group consists of six veteran musicians intent on delivering Led Zeppelin live, like you’ve never heard before. Utilizing the multi-instrumentalists at their disposal, GTLO re-create the songs in all their depth and glory with the studio overdubs that Zeppelin themselves never performed. When you hear three guitars on the album…GTLO delivers three guitarists on stage. No wigs or fake English accents, GTLO brings what the audience wants…a high energy Zeppelin concert with an honest, heart-thumping intensity.

MATT O’REE BAND

Over the past few years, The Matt O’Ree Band has done what most area bands do. They’ve played their shows, developed their sound, released their records, and very quietly built a massive fan base in the process. What makes this band different from all the others is that their local fan base includes Bruce Springsteen, David Bryan (Bon Jovi), Steve Cropper (Booker T & the MG’s), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Bernie Worell (P-Funk) and Hubert Sumlin (Howlin Wolf), all of whom had volunteered to perform on the band’s album, Brotherhood. JUDY COLLINS

Judy Collins has long inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. In the 1960s, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century.

GRACE POTTER

In the years that followed the release of her widely acclaimed 2015 album Midnight, Grace Potter considered never putting out a record again. Having endured the tumult of the breakup of her band and subsequent divorce— as well as far more joyful events like a new marriage and the birth of her first child— Potter continued writing on her own, but had no intention of sharing those songs with the world. “Too many things had happened, and I needed to take a step back,” says the Vermont-born artist. “There were moments where I thought, ‘Maybe I’ll just go back to painting houses.’”

Born July 30, 1941, in Ottawa, Canada, into a close-knit family, Paul Anka didn’t waste time getting his life in music started. From an early age he sang in a choir, studied piano and honed his writing skills with journalism courses, even working as a cub reporter at the Ottawa Citizen. By 13, he had his own vocal group, the Bobbysoxers. Blinded by determination, he would take his mother’s car and drive to perform at every amateur night he could across the river in Quebec. Soon after, he won a trip to New York by winning a Campbell’s soup contest that required him to spend three months collecting soup can labels. After visiting the music hub of New York, was there that his dream to make it as a singer composer was solidified. There was not a doubt in his young tenacious mind.

Bruce Hornsby is on a roll. After taking the music world by surprise with his wide-ranging, critically acclaimed 2019 album Absolute Zero, the singer, songwriter, composer and bandleader returns with a follow-up that picks up where its predecessor left off. Non-Secure Connection features 10 new songs exploring a broad range of themes, from civil rights to computer hackers, mall salesmen to the Darwinian aspects of AAU basketball.

BRIAN FALLON

Brian Fallon’s rockstar days are firmly behind him. And no one is more accepting of that fact than Brian Fallon. Having recently turned 40, the New Jersey legend has left more than his youth in his rearview. His former outfit, The Gaslight Anthem, reunited for a string of reunion shows in 2018 but now only exists in that murky grey area known as “indefinite hiatus.” He released two well-received solo albums in the past four years, 2016’s Painkillers and 2018’s Sleepwalkers, but even those records dwell more in the rock genre than anywhere else.

Train is a multi-GRAMMY and Billboard award-winning band from San Francisco, CA that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 list since the release of their debut self- titled album. Train’s climb to the top began in San Francisco in 1994, going on to tenaciously building a loyal following, leading up to their own self- titled debut album, released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of “Meet Virginia” gave them their first radio hit and 2001’s Drops Of Jupiter broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-GRAMMY awardwinning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40, and snaring the Best Rock Song GRAMMY award by beating out Coldplay and two U2 songs.

Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his six appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon following four appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. He appeared on Conan four times, was a recurring guest on @ midnight, and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Bargatze was part of Jimmy Fallon’s Clean Cut Comedy Tour, and has done live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row. Bargatze is also in production on a pilot for ABC, which he created and stars in.

NATE BARGATZE The Raincheck Tour Oct 3 • 7 & 9:30PM

Dan LaMorte is a lot of things, a comedian would be the first that comes to mind. At 26 years old he’s established himself as one of the youngest touring headliners. His two albums Infect Me Once & Not Enough Pieces released at #2 and #6 on the iTunes charts, both albums also play regularly on SiriusXM’s comedy channels and are approaching one million streams on Pandora. You may have seen him on Getting Doug With High, FOX’s Red Eye, Gotham Comedy Live, NextVR’s Live from Gotham Comedy, or at the Big Sky Comedy Festival. But more recently Dan has become somewhat of a stoned-running weight-loss guru, losing 180 pounds and having his story told in publications like Runner’s World and Muscle and Fitness.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT

On their 16th studio album, Indigo Girls tell their origin story. Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers reunited with their strongest backing band to date as they chronicle their personal upbringings with more specificity and focus than they have on any previous song-cycle. “We’re fallible creatures shaped by the physics of life,” says Saliers. “We’re shaped by our past; what makes us who we are? And why?”

INDIGO GIRLS

With special guest Lucy Wainwright Roche June 22 & 23 • 7:30PM

Dar Williams has always followed her muse. When she was up in Somerville, Massachusetts in the early nineties, knowing that she wanted to pursue music or theater, she worked backstage at the Opera Company of Boston and wrote plays on the side. But she was in Boston, and the muse led her into the myriad open mics and tip jar gigs of booming folk revival. She opened a trunk of old songs and started writing new ones.
