Behind The Scenes at the Basie

from Adam Philipson, President & CEO, Count Basie Theatre This year marks the Basie’s 90th anniversary as one of New Jersey’s oldest and best known historic performing arts theaters. It’s not only a moment for us to look back on our progress, but also, an opportunity to recognize everything we have in store for the future. As a nonprofit organization, we have an outstanding group of community members that serve on our Board of Trustees. For the last decade or so, we have had two 501 (c)(3) organizations operating the Basie – one overseeing operations, and the other fundraising. At our most recent board meeting, we voted to merge those entities to create one, strong and passionate group dedicated towards the future of this great organization. This was a necessary step to ensure the Basie’s future, and I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in the process. Some of you are reading this program at our annual Summer Gala, which this year stars Earth, Wind & Fire and honors Denise and Mario Monello. We thank the Monellos for their leadership and generosity, as well as our gala committee (chaired by Kristina and Peter T. Roselle) and everyone else involved in what is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Now more than ever, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for students, outstanding, world-class performances, enriching the community with cultural and educational programming, and acting as an economic engine for our entire region. Enjoy your summer and stay tuned for updates on the Basie’s vision for the future.

Not knowing what they wanted, they once scared her. Now she is comforted by their presence, speaking to them more than she speaks to the living on some days.

Eric Burdon Eric Burdon has one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in rock and roll. A member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1994, and hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 Greatest Voices of All Time, Burdon’s music has forged new territory while also topping the charts for more than five decades.

Leftover Salmon Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, string-based music, the impact of Leftover Salmon is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder at the end of 1989, the Colorado slamgrass pioneers took their form of aggressive bluegrass to rock and roll bars at a time when it wasn’t so common, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jamgrass genre.

Edgar Winter Edgar’s immediate impact on the record business with his first record, “Entrance,” was followed up with two hit albums with his band White Trash, and he topped that success with The Edgar Winter Group, creating the number one hit “Frankenstein” as well as the everpopular “Free Ride.” 12

Lisa Lampanelli is “Comedy’s Lovable Queen of Mean.” Heralded as “more than a standup -- a standout,” by comedy legend Jim Carrey, Lampanelli is a cross between Don Rickles, Archie Bunker, and a vial of estrogen. She has won accolades from The King of All Media Howard Stern, who called her “a true original and a brilliant comedy mind who’ll steal the show every time.” Known for saying things that most people are afraid to think, Lisa Lampanelli’s raunchy, gut-busting performances are wildly popular at theaters across the U.S. and Canada. This equal opportunity offender is a regular on late night television, and a frequent guest and guest host on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM satellite radio shows.

THE HOT SARDINES September 28 • 8PM

Take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein, and tie the whole thing together with a one-of-the-boys front woman with a voice from another era, and you have the Hot Sardines. In a short time, the Hot Sardines have gone from their first gig – at a coffee shop on the last Q train stop in Queens – to selling out Joe’s Pub five times in as many months, headlining at Lincoln Center’s

Midsummer Night Swing, and opening for the Bad Plus, Lulu Gainsbourg and French gypsy-jazz artist Zaz. Through it all they’ve become regulars at the Shanghai Mermaid speakeasy and turned The Standard, where they play regularly, into their own “saloon in the sky” (The Wall Street Journal) – complete with tap dancing on the bar – honing a live persona that’s been called “unforgettably wild” and “consistently electrifying” (Popmatters).

SCOTT BRADLEE’S POSTMODERN JUKEBOX October 5 • 8PM

Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox is a genrebusting, rotating collective of musicians and vocalists that reimagines modern pop hits in the style of jazz, ragtime, and swing classics of the 1920s-1950s. As arranger and producer, Bradlee has assembled a multi-talented group of performers who rework versions of popular modern songs. The music

videos of these collaborative covers have become viral sensations with millions of views on YouTube. An act that crosses all musical boundaries and generations, Postmodern Jukebox has developed a niche all its own, and performs a live show unlike any other – a must-see for anyone who loves jawdropping live performances. 24

Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the

current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. JASON ISBELL

with special guest Josh Ritter Friday, October 14 • 8PM

Alabama native Jason Isbell is both a product of his Northern Alabama roots and an example of how musical influences can help an artist evolve and mature. Born in Green Hill, Alabama, Isbell is undeniably inspired by the soultinged rock, country, and blues produced in neighboring Muscle Shoals. His sound continues to evolve but is equal parts loud and thoughtful, Southern and worldly. As a lyricist, Jason is willing to tell the difficult stories, whether raw, introspective, messy, or poetic. As an artist, he reveals his own vulnerabilities – his successes and failures – that listeners might find kinship, or perspective. The Wall Street Journal writes, “A composer of splendidly crafted songs, he performs with an intensity that connects the listener to the deep and genuine emotions that inspire his work.”

I’m IMPORTANT I believe you should always maintain your health. You take your car in for tune-ups and maintenance. So, why wouldn’t you take just as good care of yourself? That is why I eat right, go to the gym, and stay active with my grandchildren. That is also why I get my annual mammogram at the Women’s Center at Riverview.

The doctors at the Women’s Center are phenomenal. And, the new design makes it feel like you are at a spa. I especially like that you can coordinate your other diagnostic tests at the same time as your mammogram — so I can schedule my own “tune-up!” I am a grandmother. I am active. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

NOVEMBER 11, 1926: Opening Night of Reade’s Carlton Theatre. “There may be bigger buildings in town,” the Red Bank Register noted, “but none so substantially built nor so attractive.” More than 4,000 attend the grand opening attractions, including the Keith-Albee Vaudeville, the silent film “The Quarterback,” a classic cinema news reel, and a ten piece orchestra.

AUGUST 14, 1974: Just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local artist Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band performed for the first time on the Carlton – Monmouth Arts Center stage.

MAY 11, 1979: The area’s original musical superstar – the “Kid From Red Bank,” William James “Count” Basie - finally performs at the theatre, in a benefit to raise money for Shrewsbury Avenue’s A.M.E. Zion Church. “It’s good to be home,” he tells the crowd.

For the next forty seven years, Walter Reade operated the theatre, seeing it through the rise and fall of the American downtown. 1971: With initial funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC) is founded, almost immediately focusing on efforts to preserve the Carlton Theatre.

DECEMBER 28, 1973: The Monmouth County Arts Council purchases the Carlton Theatre for $96,665 -- several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” The theatre is renamed The Monmouth Arts Center.

1984: Becoming Basie: Six months after his April 26th death, the theatre is rededicated in Basie’s honor.

2001: The Count Basie Theatre begins to offer classes in music, arts, dance and theatre. 2004: $1 million dollars is raised through the “Take A Seat” campaign to replace the used Carnegie Hall seats. 2008: First renovation of the auditorium takes place, funded in part through a benefit performance by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. 2010: Emergency restoration of the front façade and iconic Count Basie Theatre marquee.

1986: In desperate need of new seating, the theatre strikes an agreement with Carnegie Hall (above) to buy its used seating -- on the condition that the seats be immediately removed from Hall property following a Sunday performance. The seats would remain in place at the Basie until 2004.

2012: The Basie acquires property adjacent to the eastern end of the building. 2013: Launch of the Basie’s BusIn program, which has already transported over 10,000 students to the theatre for a day of education, arts and enrichment.

DECEMBER 23, 1990: Bon Jovi, fresh off an international tour of arenas and stadiums, performs the first of several “homecoming” benefit shows at the Basie, opening with the anthemic “Wanted Dead or Alive,” and closing the holiday time performance with “Little Drummer Boy” and “Silent Night.”

2014: The Basie acquires the property adjacent to the western end of the building. For the first time the concept of a full, city block center for the performing arts takes shape. 2015: The Charles Lafitte Foundation’s annual Golf Classic raises $1 million dollars, allowing the Count Basie Theatre to establish an endowment to offer its arts education and outreach programs in perpetuity.

57

OCTOBER 26, 2015: The Basie announces plans for a $20 million dollar vision for the future, to include expanded classroom space, an arts education and professional development institute, and a second venue to house up-and-coming artists.
