LETTER FROM
MARIA D. SORENSEN Vice President of Development
Friends, Soon, the lights will dim, the curtain will rise and the stage will come alive. Before the magic of today’s performance begins, I want to warmly welcome you to our historic Count Basie Theatre and thank you for being a patron of the arts in our region! The Basie team works tirelessly to bring our audiences a lineup of shows that inspire, educate, and entertain all who walk through our doors. This season is filled with diverse programming for patrons of all ages and affinities. From The Fab Faux to Bernadette Peters to Blondie, you’ll enjoy great music this season from all genres. For families with young children, we are proud to present Shopkins Live and Peppa Pig! And of course, in honor of our jazz roots, we are proud to present the Basie Summer Jazz Fest in August. Summertime is also when we host the liveliest party in Monmouth County—our Summer Gala! Benefiting our beloved theatre, the Summer Gala this year features a rocking concert by Huey Lewis and The News and honors two of the Basie’s closest supporters: Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin. Carol and Mary Ann are community leaders, philanthropists, and true ambassadors of the Basie, and we are honored to celebrate them both. We are also deeply grateful to our gala co-chairs, Basie Board member Mollie Giamanco and Valerie Montecalvo, our gala committee members, our Board, and all of our gala attendees for making this year’s event so very successful! This season is geared up to be our best one yet and we are deeply grateful for your involvement at the Count Basie Theatre. Thank you for your support and please enjoy the show! Warmly,
Maria D. Sorensen Vice President of Development

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T THE FAB FAUX
Performing REVOLVER in its entirety Plus a Mixed Set of Classic Hits! Saturday, June 17 • 8PM
With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music with unwavering respect, and are known for their painstaking recreations of the songs. Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Imagine hearing complex material like “Strawberry Fields Forever” or “I Am the Walrus” performed in complete partperfect renditions; or such harmony-driven songs as “Because,” “Nowhere Man,” and “Paperback Writer,” reproduced not only note- for-note, but with extra vocalists to achieve a double-tracked effect. Approaching the songs with the intent of playing them live as accurately in musical reading and in spirit as possible, The Faux’s breathtaking performances tend to dispel all concertgoers’ previous notions of a Beatles tribute act.
HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS Friday, June 23 • 8PM

These Grammy Award winners have written and performed such classic Top Ten Hits as “Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Stuck With You,” “I Want A New Drug,” “If This Is It,” “Hip To Be Square,” “Do You Believe In Love” and “Workin’ For A Livin.” The group also wrote and performed “The Power of Love” and “Back in Time” for the hit film Back To The Future. “The Power of Love,” nominated for an Academy Award, went to #1 on Billboard’s singles chart, and was a smash hit worldwide.

If all of life were this simple.” – Robert Fripp King Crimson was conceived in November 1968 and born on January 13th 1969 in the Fulham Palace Cafe, London (Fripp/Ian McDonald/Greg Lake/Michael Giles/Pete Sinfield), coming to prominence after supporting The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T BLONDIE & GARBAGE
The Rage and Rapture Tour Friday, July 28 • 8PM
BLONDIE “Here comes the 21st Century,” Debbie Harry assuredly sang nearly three decades ago on her solo disc Def Dumb And Blonde, “it’s gonna be so much better for a girl like me.” With the turn of the century well behind us now, that gleeful prediction has certainly come true: Singer-songwriter Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke and their band-mates in Blondie are undeniable pop icons, their sound and sensibility as fresh as when they first topped the charts in the late 1970s. GARBAGE In the spring of 2013, the members of Garbage Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson and Butch Vig gathered in Los Angeles to start work on their sixth studio album. Except the recording didn’t begin in a studio, per se. It began where so many bands first do: in a basement.
SHAWN COLVIN & JOAN OSBORNE July 30 • 7:30PM
SHAWN COLVIN In late 1996, Shawn Colvin released her fourth album, A Few Small Repairs. With its powerful song about a woman who “came home with a mission,” A Few Small Repairs proved to be Shawn’s breakthrough. “Sunny Came Home” captured the ears and eyes of millions, reaching #1 at multiple radio formats and receiving heavy airplay on MTV and VH1. The album was certified platinum and Shawn was awarded two of Grammy’s biggest honors, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. JOAN OSBORNE “This one feels a little different,” Joan Osborne says of her latest album Love and Hate. In addition to being the beloved singer-songwriter and seventime Grammy nominee’s eighth studio album and her eOne debut, the 12-song set is one of the most personally-charged, creatively ambitious efforts of her two-decades-plus recording career.

THE BASIE.ORG
History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top-performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glasslined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.
In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son. In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the EStreet Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. And today, the Count Basie Theatre has embarked on a $20 million capital campaign, with the aim of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. A building dedicated to the Basie’s education programs and Performing Arts Academy will be constructed, which will also house an all-new second venue. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, an outdoor arts plaza and more. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Theatre aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T BRIAN WILSON PRESENTS PET SOUNDS: THE FINAL PERFORMANCES with special guests Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin September 26 • 8PM
He is one of popular music’s most deeply revered figures, the main creative force behind some of the most cherished recordings in rock history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most influential composers of the last century. Wilson’s remarkable journey began in a modest Hawthorne, California home that was filled with music. His mom and dad both played piano, and as a young “boy soprano,” Brian’s vocal gift was immediately evident. He had also started singing harmonies…literally “in their room”…with his two younger brothers (Dennis and Carl). As a teen in the 1950s, he became obsessed with the harmonic blend of groups like the Four Freshmen, and then, in the early 1960s, inspired to combine multi-part vocal harmony with the rock rhythms of Chuck Berry, Brian found his place in the musical sun.
BEN FOLDS
Paper Airplane Request Tour October 19 • 8PM
Ben Folds is widely regarded as one of the major music influencers of our generation. He’s spent over a decade sharing the stage with some of the world’s greatest symphony orchestras – from Sydney, Australia to the Kennedy Center, performing his pop hits and his critically acclaimed concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Throughout his career, Folds has created an enormous body of genre-bending musical art that includes pop albums as the front man for Ben Folds Five, multiple solo rock albums, as well as unique collaborative records with artists from Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, to Weird Al and William Shatner. His most recent album is a blend of pop and classical original works, in part recorded with the revered classical sextet Music that soared to #1 on both the Billboard classical and classical crossover charts.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T ZZ TOP
The Tonnage Tour October 24 • 8PM
ZZ TOP a/k/a “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and, in 2004, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard -- but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after more than 45 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah,” says Billy, guitarist extraordinaire, “we’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing.
PINK FLOYD LASER SPECTACULAR Friday, October 13 • 8PM

In 1986, the Laser Spectacular was produced for the very first time in San Antonio, Texas. Producer Steve Monistere managed to turn the show into a world wide, must see event! After 30 years of touring, Paramount’s Laser Spectacular has become a cult classic, presenting the music of Pink Floyd like you’ve never seen it before. Surrounded by 50,000 watts of concert quality sound, Pink Floyd’s musical legacy continues as the band’s concept music captures the imagination, and carries listeners away on a mind-expanding journey driven by cutting-edge effects. Colorful lasers and lighting effects parallel the sonic journey, as the senses are confronted with an array of glowing visual displays choreographed to the soundtrack, during the 2-hour-and-20-minute show.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T STEPHEN STILLS & JUDY COLLINS August 16 • 8PM
50 years ago, singer-songwriter Stephen Stills met singer-songwriter Judy Collins, known for her piercing ocean blue eyes. Their tumultuous love affair would later be immortalized by Stills with his composition “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” performed by Crosby, Stills & Nash on their landmark debut. Both artists would go on to shape modern music with visionary approaches, but Stills and Collins’ short fiery union remains a transformative era for the two artists. For this once in a lifetime experience, the two music legends will pull from their rich catalogs, debut songs from their upcoming album, due out Summer of 2017, and share warm and intimate stories from their journeys and the 1960s folk and Laurel Canyon scenes they helped build.

MEMORIES OF FRANK
Celebrating 100 Years of Sinatra Saturday, September 30 • 8PM
Enjoy the sounds of the Sinatra classics you know and love in a celebration of 100 years of Old Blue Eyes. Michael Martocci is a local talent from just over the bridge in New Jersey. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Martocci grew up with Frank Sinatra as a staple in his household. The sounds of his singing will bring back cherished memories. Michael lets this audience know that he is NOT a SINATRA IMPERSONATOR. You would have to be crazy to think that anyone can be Frank Sinatra. He simply does these concerts to keep the music alive and make sure his grandkids will know the name and the music of Frank Sinatra. As a young adult Michael traveled the world with Frank Sinatra serving as his host for pre-concert VIP events prior to the show. Michael last performed his Sinatra tribute show last May at the Basie to a SOLD OUT enthusiastic crowd.

THE CAPITOL STEPS Friday, October 27 • 7:30PM
Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 35 albums, including their latest, Mock the Vote. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program!

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS
w/ special guests Bash & Pop (ft. Tommy Stinson of The Replacements) October 11 • 8PM
If you were to dissect the today’s alternative rock music, you’ll find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with “Love My Way,” “Pretty In Pink,” “Heaven,” “The Ghost In You,” and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing seven studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD. Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio scoring a multitude of #1 singles. With the advent of MTV in the early 80’s the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes’ approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented.

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T GOODNIGHT MOON & THE RUNAWAY BUNNY March 22 • 4:30PM
Goodnight Moon is a celebration of familiar nighttime rituals, while The Runaway Bunny’s pretend tale of leaving home evokes reassuring responses from his loving mum. Both tales feature endearing rabbit characters, and the soothing rhythms of bunny banter and dreamlike imagery never fail to infuse young readers with a reassuring sense of security. Mermaid’s staged adaptation will bring a new sense of appreciation to stories that have delighted several generations. Mermaid Theatre has earned international acclaim for its unique interpretations of the works of Eric Carle (The Very Hungry Caterpillar ), Leo Lionni (Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch) and Sam McBratney (Guess How Much I Love You).
