Count Basie Center for the Arts Mission Statement
The Count Basie Center for the Arts is New Jersey’s premier center for the cultural arts, dedicated to fostering powerful, inclusive artistic experiences and creative exchange of ideas.
The Basie mission is to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that embrace and amplify the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to enriching the community’s quality of life by generating opportunities for participation in the arts, partnering with schools, collaborating with other mission-based organizations and driving regional economic prosperity.
Our Values
A LOVE OF THE ARTS: We affirm the importance and impact of the arts and the courage of artists, through performance, education, outreach, and partnership.
EQUITY: We are committed to advancing inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility for all.
THE VALUE OF ARTS EDUCATION: Arts education is critical to academic success, helps build confidence, empathy, and social connectivity, and should be available to all children and youth regardless of income or background.
COMMUNITY: We place the community we serve at the forefront.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility
ADAPTIVITY: We will be nimble and responsive to new challenges and opportunities.
EXCELLENCE: We strive for exemplary quality in everything we do and endeavor to create a positive, joyful, seamless experience for artists, patrons, and students.
APPRECIATION OF OUR STAFF: We value our employees, strive to promote their professional growth, and cherish the place we all hold within the history of this treasured organization.
PHILANTHROPY: Our love of the Basie Center and everything it represents requires our donors, patrons, and Board members to make increased financial contributions of personal significance now more than ever.
The Count Basie Center’s commitment to being a diverse, equitable and inclusive (DEI) performing arts organization is at the core of our mission to Inspire, Educate and Entertain. As part of that commitment, the Count Basie Center has established a DEI Task Force comprised of board, staff, and community members. Our purpose is to intentionally embrace and amplify positive change toward diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in every area of our organization, including programming, education, staffing, board recruitment, and community engagement.
The Count Basie Center is determined to provide an inclusive environment in which all who walk through our doors can do so as their most authentic selves. We firmly believe that everyone of all backgrounds and identities deserves access to experience the enrichment that the arts contribute to a full life.
Land Acknowledgement
The Count Basie Center for the Arts recognizes and honors that we stand today on the land once known as “Lenapehoking,” the traditional territory of the Algonquin-speaking Lenni-Lenape Native Americans. Acknowledging this history is part of the Basie Center’s dedication to ensuring that equity, diversity and inclusion are paramount to the organization’s mission and programming.
Through our Forever For Everyone endowment campaign, the Basie Center is working toward providing access, education and inspiration to all. We firmly believe the arts enrich our community and this endowment campaign will allow the Basie Center to continue its mission to embrace and amplify positive change and ensure inclusion and access for everyone.
“As a young musician, I took piano classes at the Basie Center Academy, which helped strengthen and influenced my love for jazz. Today, I’m serving as honorary chair of the Count Basie Center’s Forever For Everyone campaign, to help provide hundreds of yearly scholarships to kids and families with interests similar to my own.”
“It’s more than just concerts at The Basie Center – their classes and arts education experiences teach not just performance skills, but also critical life skills like confidence, tolerance, teamwork, and collaboration. I’m honored to have a role in the institution that helped me grow as a musician.”
- Charlie Puth, Honorary Chair FOREVER FOR EVERYONE Endowment CampaignWe invite you to learn more about our endowment campaign and how you can support the Count Basie Center for the Arts to create a more diverse and equal world.
History
Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie Center performer, has long praised its historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.”
For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theatre, touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so many treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes.
In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton.
In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center.
Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.”
Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz artist William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie returned several times in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.
In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.
In years to come, the Basie Center would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to Inspire, Educate and Entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that amplify and embrace the diversity of the region.
The Basie’s Academy of the Arts has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored.
In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a block-long creative campus.Today, that expansion is complete, with the Grunin Arts and Education Building housing rehearsal studios, classrooms and a home for the Basie Center Academy, along with The Vogel, the Basie Center’s new state-of-the-art performance venue. On the facility’s east side, our spacious, glass-lined lobby features new concessions and restroom facilities and barrier-free amenities and upgrades. The warm glow of the lobby shines upon the beautiful Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which offers entrance to the William and Catherine Basie Arts Plaza. And our historic theatre, named to commemorate Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center, is as beautiful and grand as ever.
As we approach our 100th anniversary, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing arts and arts education. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

So notes Jeremy Grunin, Chairperson of the Basie Center’s Board of Trustees, the governing body which oversees operations of Basie Center’s performance venues, arts academy, classical music conservatory, community theatre company... and all the other vital pieces that fold into the nonprofit’s community profile.“
In addition to our work in arts education, from classrooms in under-resourced communities to professional development opportunities for teachers,” Grunin recognizes, “we have worldrenowned performing artists on our stages almost every evening.”
“We recognize the platform that affords us, and we feel it’s right to use that platform to highlight other organizations attending to vital causes in our region.”
Enter THE GIVING YEAR.
THE GIVING YEAR is the Basie Center and Bank of America’s yearlong initiative to bring recognition and financial support to 12 area nonprofits doing important work in and around our community. THE GIVING YEAR will last throughout 2023, with the Basie Center donating $1 from every ticket sold, with a different nonprofit highlighted each month. Organizations are eligible to receive up to $15,000 during their month, in addition to complimentary tickets for distribution to their volunteers and / or their beneficiaries.
THE GIVING YEAR kicked off in January, with Basie Center patrons raising $15,000 for ShoreHouse (www.shorehousenj.org), a mental wellness nonprofit located in Long Branch. In February, Asbury Park-based youth and family empowerment nonprofit Inspire Life (www.weinspirelife.org) was chosen, while the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide (www.sptsusa.org), the Sandy Hook Foundation (www.sandyhooknj.org) and No Limits Café (www.nolimitscafe.org) were selected for March, April and May, respectively. In June, LGBTQIA+ resource center Q Spot (www.qspot.org) was chosen in recognition of Pride Month, while at press time, Red Bank’s own Ritesh Shah Charitable Pharmacy (https://rscprx.org/) was announced as July’s beneficiary.
“Bank of America and the Count Basie Center share many causes and concerns, especially the betterment of our communities,” said Alberto Garofalo, Market President, Bank of America New Jersey. “During ‘The Giving Year,’ we’ll use our longstanding partnership and platforms to highlight and reward the efforts of twelve area nonprofit organizations, whose commitments to our region help those who need it the most.”
“Part of our responsibility as a nonprofit organization is to look inwards and say, ‘What more can we do?’” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “Last month, we teamed with Charlie Puth to launch our ‘Forever For Everyone’ endowment campaign, which will offer hundreds of Basie Center Academy scholarships in perpetuity to students interested in the arts.”
“And because we have this status as a place where world-class musicians, actors and performers come to play, we also have this opportunity – and responsibility – to lend our visibility to others. Bank of America and the Basie Center want THE GIVING YEAR to become a pedestal for organizations that deserve to have their hard work and purposes known and recognized.”
If there’s an area cause you love or feel could benefit during THE GIVING YEAR, have that organization visit www.thebasie.org/thegivingyear and fill out the quick application for consideration.
“The Count Basie Center is a unique nonprofit organization.”The Giving Year Recipient, ShoreHouse, January 2023
