PRESENTING THE

BASIE’S VISION FOR ITS FUTURE PAGES 50 - 51 A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

A Letter from Maureen And Steven Van Zandt

Honorary THE FUTURE IS NOW Campaign Co-Chairs

We are the only country in the world that considers art a luxury. Everybody else (being around a lot longer) understands art to be an essential part of the quality of life. A community’s art is a big part of its identity, and the degree by which it supports its arts is part of how it is measured. The Count Basie Theatre, called the Carlton Theatre back in the day, has a special place in our lives. Maureen spent most of her childhood summers at the Jersey shore, where she frequented the theatre seeing countless shows, and later went on to dance in The Nutcracker on the Basie stage. It was my local theater growing up. It’s where I saw A Hard Day’s Night and watched the young girls run down the aisles compelled by their uncontrollable passion to attempt to kiss the Beatles! I can still remember the amazingly rich colors flowing off the screen in Jerry Lewis’ The Nutty Professor, being quite a revelation compared to our black and white TVs. Looking back now it wasn’t very local - having to come all the way from Wilson Avenue in New Monmouth - but Red Bank was our closest “big town.” Just up the street at Jack’s Music is where I bought my first guitar. We hope to see the Count Basie Theatre expand into a regional center for the performing arts, which every community needs. The arts remain the first and best opportunity for communication between the races, genders, religions, and age groups. As the chaos and strife increases in the world, it is the one consistent inspirational and motivational sanctuary. The Count Basie Theatre’s expansion into a true, regional center for the performing arts will be an example for other communities to follow, nationwide, and worldwide. Maureen and I are dedicated to doing everything possible to support it.

Maureen and Steven Van Zandt Honorary Campaign Co-Chairs 4

Brian Kirk Presents SANTA FOR LUNCH BREAK Starring Brian Kirk & The Jirks, Matt O’Ree Band and More Special Guests! Saturday, December 19 • 8:00 PM

In what’s quickly becoming an annual Jersey Shore holiday tradition, the fourth installment of Santa For… events is stuffing your stocking with a night “of awesome music and offensive jokes” according to Brian Kirk. Designed to raise funds and awareness to help combat hunger, this threehour jingle balling of a show boasts the comedic antics of Brian Kirk and the musical talent of the Jirks together with Matt O’Ree Band and more special musical acts.

I wanted to do something that was a true party, a real variety show. I wanted to create a risqué sort of Ed Sullivan show, something where we’d do jokes and skits, play a song, have some dancers come on, just keep it fun. You don’t wanna overwrite a show like that,” stated Brian Kirk. Of the first year’s event, Santa for Sea Bright, Facebook exploded with recaps of the night that read, “It’s like Donovan’s Reef on a Sunday at the Basie.” Even more reiterated, “It was epic, amazing, fun, incredible...” However you want to describe it, it’s just a merry, nut-cracking of a good time! Spread some holiday cheer, “Kirky Style” at the Basie!

“What I wanted to do, if I may be so bold, was to re-do the idea of a fundraiser. People have been getting badgered into giving money by all sorts of organizations, and through all kind of means, and 14

“Being in a community – one that I feel is a good community, so many people contribute in their own way,” Bandiera says. “I like to help out as much as I can, with anything that may need the attention of a benefit.Whether it be (past HOPE beneficiaries) the Parker Clinic, ALS awareness, the Cancer Institute... this time around, we have four more worthy candidates in need of funding and awareness.” Since 2003, the HOPE concerts have raised nearly $3 million for various charities in and around the Jersey Shore area.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org

SING-ALONG LIVE WITH THE MUPPET MOVIE Sunday, January 31 • 2:00PM

Have you found your Rainbow Connection? You will, when Heather Henson’s “Sing-Along with The Muppet Movie” takes over the Count Basie Theatre!

and of course, sing along with the movie! The Muppet Movie is the 1979 classic that represents the feature film roots of the Muppets. It received two Academy Award nominations and is listed in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.”

Comparable to participatory film experiences like The Rocky Horror Picture Show, “Sing-Along with The Muppet Movie” provides family-friendly, raucous interactions with the classic, timeless film of Heather’s legendary father, Jim Henson. The IBEX Puppetry Sing Along crew brings elements of the films to life for the audience via puppetry, kiting, and shadow acting.

The Muppet Movie follows Kermit the Frog as he embarks on a cross-country trip to Hollywood. Along the way, he meets many other misfit Muppets. They join Kermit to overcome danger, discover their true selves, and build a future of friendship together.

The impact on prevention, immunity, diet, aging, and chronic disorders is unparalleled and will revolutionize how we understand ourselves and the health of those around us. That is why I eat right, go to the gym, and stay active with my grandchildren. That is also why I get my annual mammogram at the Women’s Center at Riverview.

The doctors at the Women’s Center are phenomenal. And, the new design makes it feel like you are at a spa. THE BEACH BOYS

Thursday, February 11 • 7:30PM

You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. To be sure, this band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that it changed the musical landscape so profoundly that every pop act since has been in its debt.

(vocals/keyboards) who along with Jeffrey Foskett (guitar/vocals), Brian Eichenburger (bass/ vocals), Tim Bonhomme (keyboards/vocals), John Cowsill of The Cowsills (percussion/vocals) and Scott Totten (guitar/vocals) continue the legacy of the iconic American band. Love’s role as the band’s front man sometimes overshadows his stature as one of rock’s foremost songwriters. “Surfin’,” The Beach Boys’ first hit came from his pen. With his cousin, Brian Wilson, Love wrote the classics “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me Rhonda,” “California Girls” and the Grammy nominated “Good Vibrations.” Years later, he showed he still had the lyrical chops by co-writing the irresistible and chart-topping “Kokomo.”

The Beach Boys continue to create and perform with the same bold imagination and style that marked their explosive debut over 50 years ago. The Beach Boys are led by Mike Love (lead vocals) and Beach Boy-vet Bruce Johnston 46

The Future? For the Basie, it’s now $20 million capital campaign announced to fulfill the Basie’s vision as a true, regional center for the performing arts

For nearly a century, Red Bank’s historic Count Basie Theatre has served the community with a diversity of entertainment and educational programming. In October, the nonprofit organization unveiled a vision for its future. Dubbed “The Future Is Now,” the directors and trustees revealed the capital campaign during a widely-covered news conference, hosted by honorary co-chairs Maureen and Steven Van Zandt, NBC’s The Voice star and musician Jacquie Lee, Basie CEO Adam Philipson and theatre board chairman Tom Widener. The vision includes a new, glasswalled lobby, a modern upgrade for the theatre’s backstage area, a second, multiuse venue for up and coming artists, and new space for area arts nonprofits, partner

Basie CEO Adam Philipson, Steven and Maureen Van Zandt, Jacquie Lee, and Basie Board Chairman Tom Widner

programs, and the theatre’s ever-growing Performing Arts Academy. “I don’t know how you can not get excited about this because it’s really going to be a beautiful, beautiful performing arts center,” co-chair Maureen Van Zandt told the Asbury Park Press. “I’m particularly excited about the teaching aspect of it, to expand that space and I’m sure the curriculum, I think it’s going to be really wonderful for the community.”

“For us who live in the arts, the arts are not a luxury,” Steven Van Zandt told the Press. “it’s an essential part of the quality of life. And I think you’ll see the difference when some place like this exists. It’s a very exciting time, and I think it’s going to be a great example of what should happen in every community across this country.” “We decided on ‘The Future Is Now’ as our capital campaign slogan, because it invites the community to be part of a legacy,” CEO Philipson told attendees. “We envision a true, regional center for the performing arts – a full city block of talent, entertainment, education, passion and discovery. Completing the “Future Is Now” vision will cost an estimated $20 million. However, that’s small when compared to the

economic impact it will bring to Red Bank and the surrounding region. “The Basie will continue to be a catalyst of growth in Red Bank and the surrounding area,” Red Bank mayor Pasquale Menna told the crowd. “Under this vision, the Basie estimates that its current economic impact of $17 million per year will rise to over $30 million upon completion. That is a positive benefit to our entire area. But beyond economics, the Basie’s educational offerings will greatly expand. This is important for young people in our community.” For more on THE FUTURE IS NOW or to make a donation to the legacy, please visit TheBASIE.org

AN EVENING WITH AN EVENING WITH JOAN BAEZ

JOAN BAEZ

Tuesday, March 8 • 8:00PM

Joan Baez has been as busy as ever in the five years since she celebrated the landmark years of 2008-2009, the 50th anniversaries of her legendary residency in 1958 at the famed Club 47 in Cambridge, and her subsequent debut at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival.

Interna tional tour and more recently, standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world celebrated his 90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park. She shined a spotlight on the Free Speech Movement, took to the fields with Cesar Chavez, organized resistance to the Vietnam War, then forty years later saluted the Dixie Chicks for their courage to protest the Iraq war. Her earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular, before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963, beginning a tradition of mutual mentoring that continues to this day.

In addition to multiple tours of the US and abroad, the recent past has included the induction of Joan’s 1960 debut Vanguard LP by the National Recording Academy into the Grammy® Hall Of Fame and the presentation to her of the inaugural Joan Baez Award for Outstanding Inspirational Service in the Global Fight for Human Rights at Amnesty International’s 50th Anniversary gathering in 2012.

Amongst the many honors bestowed upon her, she is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, the greatest honor that the Recording Academy can bestow (2007). Day After Tomorrow, her 2008 album was praised by critics and nominated for a Grammy. Its release was followed by the PBS American Masters premier of her life story, Joan Baez: How Sweet The Sound.

She remains a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable – marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, inspiring Vaclav Havel in his fight for a Czech Republic, singing on the first Amnesty 70

CELTIC NIGHTS Spirit of Freedom

Wednesday, March 16 • 8:00PM

Just as a plant craves light, Celtic people are drawn to music and song. Scattered around the world like seeds on the wind, they are propelled by the powerful rhythms and motifs of a mysterious and exuberant ancient culture. Music is the soul, the very lifeblood of their tradition. It binds them together, even as it sets them apart. This driving passion for music and dance is the keystone of Celtic identity.

it is this natural affinity with music and song that has given Celtic people a truly global voice. A Celtic Voice. Every thundering dance tune and plaintive melody is a separate thread in the broad and colourful tapestry of Celtic music. Spirit of Freedom tells the story of Irish independence, beginning 100 years ago with the Easter Rising. Akin to America’s 4th of July, the Easter Rising of 1916 created the Ireland we know and love today. Through music, song, dance, and storytelling, Celtic Nights honors the struggle of a people fighting to gain freedom, independence, and true democracy.

Their response to melody, lyric, and the crisscrossing rhythms of Irish dance is reflexive, intuitive, and filled with joy. The Irish embrace their musical culture like no other nation. And their pride in artistry is its own reward. Above all else, 104
