LETTER FROM ADAM PHILIPSON
President & CEO Count Basie Center for the Arts
AND
TOM WIDENER
Chairman Count Basie Center for the Arts
Dear Friends: Welcome! We thank you all for being such loyal patrons of the Count Basie Center for the Arts.
President & CEO,
he Arts
With both amazing performances and transformational educational activities - from our student film festival, to our children’s opera camp, classical music training with the Basie’s Monmouth Conservatory, plus our school bus-in programs - the Basie Center is in full bloom! And yet, that bloom is about to burst. Something bigger is afoot – marked by the clanging of iron, the rise of steel beams and columns, and so many other signs of our expansion. Last spring, we elevated the Count Basie name to represent our organization as a whole – our performance space, our nonprofit mission, our performing arts academy, our work in schools and the community, and all that will come from our expansion. And then, in October, we received a transformational opportunity, when Hackensack Meridian Health invested in our future and created the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre. As we said on the day of the unveiling, this partnership deepens the connection between the arts, health and the wellbeing we strive for in our everyday lives. Hackensack Meridian Health co-CEO Robert C Garrett agreed.
ADAM PHILIPSON President & CEO Count Basie Center for the Arts
“Studies indicate how music reduces anxiety for patients and their families, and actually lessens pain,” he noted. “So there’s no doubt in my mind that this new partnership will have a profound impact on health and healing for this community, for generations to come.” Upon completion, the Count Basie Center for the Arts will house the historic Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre, the Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, new classrooms and rehearsal spaces, a second performance venue, a public arts plaza and more. We will also add other amenities: elevators and other barrier-free accommodations, an expanded lobby with new concessions and restroom facilities, a new HVAC system and more. Shakespeare once wrote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Since 1926, our historic theatre had a host of names: Reade’s Carlton Theatre, the Monmouth Arts Center, and the Count Basie Theatre. Today, with great pleasure, we introduce the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre.
TOM WIDENER Chairman Count Basie Center for the Arts
The Count Basie Center for the Arts will still be all that the Basie is known for -- the best performances, the highest level of arts education, an economic engine, an agent for change... the list goes on and on. Our donors, partnerships and customers make all of this possible. We look forward to our expansion making a difference for everyone who chooses to live, work and play in our region, and we welcome Hackensack Meridian Health as a partner.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the historic theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. In 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded,“The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theater be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him “the future of rock and roll,” local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1,700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer. In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.
In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to inspire, educate and entertain through its distinct and engaging cultural and artistic offerings that reflect the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Neoclassical Revivalstyle, 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. In 2018, the Count Basie name was elevated to represent the entire center for the arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a blocklong creative campus. The west side expansion is underway, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s asyet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, work has started to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrierfree amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza. And recently, Hackensack Meridian Health’s investment in the future of the Basie Center lead to the renaming of its historic theater. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

SHOWTIME SPOTLIGHT BEST OF THE EAGLES Saturday, February 16 • 8PM
Best of the Eagles (BOTE) was established in 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Joe Vadala and a group of professional New Jersey musicians who individually have an auspicious pedigree, are passionate about their love of the Eagles music and who have all worked with numerous national touring artists. BOTE is the most exact interpretation of the music of the Eagles in America bar none! Each member mirrors his counterpart in the Eagles instrumentally and vocally. However, this is no simple copy band or impersonator act but rather a group of excellent musicians who expertly and authentically re-create the songs, the music, the vocals and the magical aura of one of America’s greatest rock bands. After selling out many venues in the region including the Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University, BOTE look forward to sharing a great night of Eagles hits, fan faves, nuggets and memories in their very first appearance at the legendary Count Basie Center for the Arts!
AMERICA
50th Anniversary - Live in Concert March 21 • 8PM America’s journey has found them exploring a wide variety of musical terrain. Their best-known tunes, which also include “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair” were cornerstones of 1970’s Top 40 and FM rock radio. Yet beyond their impressive catalog of hits, listeners would discover there was always much more to America than surface perceptions. The combination of Gerry Beckley’s melodic pop rock and Dewey Bunnell’s use of folk-jazz elements, slinky Latin-leaning rhythms and impressionistic lyric imagery contrasted well with Dan Peek’s more traditional country-rock leanings and highly personal lyrics. America’s albums–six certified gold and/or platinum, with their first greatest hits collection, History, hitting four plus million in sales–displayed a fuller range of the trio’s talents than did their singles. Their material encompassed an ambitious artistic swath; from effects-laden rockers to oddball medleys to soul-bearing ballads, America displayed a flawless blend of disparate genres and styles as wide-open as the great American plains.

A new era: Introducing the
Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre The Count Basie Center for the Arts is one of the topselling nonprofit performing arts centers in the U.S., with more than 250,000 patrons in 2017. As part of its current $27 million expansion, the Basie Center will evolve as a world-class center for arts education, culture, and the performing arts, potentially doubling the number of its performance, educational and cultural offerings, while reaching a wider sector of the community through new partnerships and programs.
On October 26, Hackensack Meridian Health and the Count Basie Center for the Arts unveiled the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre, the new name for the historic venue housed on the Center’s growing campus. “The Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre will hold a special place on our creative campus,” said Tom Widener, chairman, Count Basie Center Board of Trustees. “Our historic theater is the centerpiece of the Basie Center and we are thrilled to have such an important state-wide institution associated with it.”
“We value our relationship with the Basie Center and are proud to play a role in its expansion,” said Robert C. Garrett, co-CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health. “Our association with the Count Basie Center for the Arts is a natural extension of our dedication to improving the health and well-being of our patients and their families.” Upon completion of the arts organization’s expansion, the Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre will continue to be a main attraction of the Count Basie Center for the Arts. “At Hackensack Meridian Health, our mission is to transform health care and serve as a leader of positive change,” said John K. SANTA FOR LUNCH BREAK
Starring Brian Kirk & the Jirks Saturday,December 22 • 8PM In what’s quickly becoming an annual Jersey Shore holiday tradition, the seventh installment of Santa For… events is stuffing your stocking with a night “of awesome music and offensive jokes” according to Brian Kirk. Designed to raise funds and awareness to help combat hunger, this three-hour jingle balling of a show boasts the comedic antics of Brian Kirk and the musical talent of the Jirks together with more special musical acts. “What I wanted to do, if I may be so bold, was to re-do the idea of a fundraiser. People have been getting badgered into giving money by all sorts of organizations, and through all kind of means, and I wanted to do something that was a true party, a real variety show. I wanted to create a risqué sort of Ed Sullivan show, something where we’d do jokes and skits, play a song, have some dancers come on, just keep it fun. You don’t wanna over-write a show like that.” stated Brian Kirk.
