APRIL - JUNE 2013

SHOWTIME

Note from Adam Philipson

Chief Executive Officer, Count Basie Theatre & Foundation Welcome to the show! It’s been a great few months since I came to Red Bank. I have met many of you at performances, read your emails and have integrated myself with the staff and our boards - I have never been happier or prouder to be associated with an organization. The Basie is the best. As a staff, we constantly brainstorm about how we can add to the quality of life in our region and are going to be expanding our outreach to local schools, diversifying our programs, as well as developing even more meaningful community partnerships. We will continue to bring amazing shows to the Basie and assure you a seamless experience with us. From the moment you get our brochure or email notification until the moment you leave the theatre, we are committed to making your visit enjoyable and memorable. We recognize when you look around at our gorgeous building, marvel at the restoration and see a world-class artist with a full house, you may think, “Wow! They must be doing well.” We are! The shows have never been better and attendance is up. But the financial reality is a different story and one that must be shared. Once we pay artists, sound, lights, crew, marketing costs and staff for a performance, there is little left to cover operating expenses. To meet your expectations with the quality of shows and keep the building looking wonderful, we rely on your generosity. One way to do this is through your donations, sponsorships and membership. Over 1,800 of your neighbors are Basie members, so won’t you consider joining them? Our goal is to have 3000 members by 2014. It’s simple to do, just call, email or scan the QR code to become a member today! Another way to show support is to join us for benefit concerts such as the Fab Faux. These critical fundraisers keep the doors open and building in top shape - we appreciate your support by attending these great shows. There are other options for helping the Basie remain a vibrant part of the community. Feel free to contact me or our Director of Development, Shannon Eadon at 732-224-8778 x 128. Thanks for being with us tonight. Enjoy the show. Adam Philipson

Note from Raymond R. Moser, Jr. Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees

Photo: Brian Stratton

I am now into my second year of a two year term as Chairman of the Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees. My first year weathered a lack luster economy, saw a rather large turnover of Basie personnel, including the CEO, a restructuring of management and ended with Superstorm Sandy. Happily, the Basie Trustees, staff, donors and patrons stood together through the tumult and continued presenting high quality performances. Today, we have a new CEO – Adam Philipson –and are proud that we have been able to bring to the Basie one of the top performing arts CEO’s in the country. Adam has brought reorganization to the Staff and Management Team of the Basie as well as needed stability and efficiency. In the coming year you will see expanded programming, extended community outreach for the Basie Performing Arts Academy and the transformation of the Basie’s position as a premier arts and entertainment venue into a premier regional arts and arts education destination. However, excellent management only takes us so far. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie needs your direct support to complete the necessary building renovations and fulfill our mission as a community-based theatre. What can you do? First and foremost – keep attending performances. However, performance revenue doesn’t fully support the Basie, we also need your charitable donations – become a Theatre Member, attend Basie fundraising events, volunteer your time, make a charitable donation to our Capital Fund. For those of you currently supporting the Theatre – I thank you.

Raymond R. Moser, Jr.

Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees

Ryan Beatty

with Special Guest Jackson Harris Friday, April 12, 7PM

After being nominated for a Teen Choice Award for “Choice Web Star”, Ryan Beatty released his debut EP “Because of You” exclusively on iTunes on July 24th. In less than 24 hours, Ryan hit #1 Pop Album US Charts, while hitting #7 on the Top Album US Charts on iTunes overall – all without being signed to a label! Early in his career, Billboard featured him as #10 on the Top Next Big Sound chart across social media, and PopStar! Magazine named him one of the top 12 acts to look out for in 2012. Beatty’s one-of-a-kind music combines an acoustic sound, mixed with modern old school edge and adds in real instruments for upbeat tempos. Made possible in part by:

The 8th Annual Basie Awards Count Basie Theatre’s assessment and evaluation program (patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards)

honoring excellence in High School Theatre within Monmouth County is proudly sponsored by

When we started the Basie Awards Evaluation process in the Fall of 2005, we had 13 musicals and 11 dramatic productions to assess. In 2013, our Fall season is off to a terrific start with 21 productions; some hilarious comedies, two musicals and some very thought provoking dramas. Spring productions promise to be equally exciting with 24 more musicals and two dramas to evaluate. The growth we’ve seen in the level of professionalism from each of the participating schools and the increased number of audience members is testimony to the positive impact the Basie Awards have provided to the community. To some observers the message the Basie Awards is giving to the students is that to win is enough, to win is paramount. But when we think of the multiple students we’ve come to know during the past eight years our program has been in existence, the numerous directors we’ve met and admire, and the supportive population of arts advocates and parents, we are confident that the primary motivators for those involved in mounting a theatrical production are the inherent intrinsic rewards. We hope they never lose sight of the true value of mounting a production: the lasting memories, the personal growth, the camaraderie and fun! In our opinion it far surpasses the momentary thrill of winning an award. The following schools have participated in our Awards Program: Asbury Park • Christian Brothers Academy • Colts Neck • Communications High School Freehold • Freehold Township • High Technology High • Howell • Keansburg Long Branch • Manalapan • Marlboro • Matawan Regional • Mater Dei Prep Monmouth • Middletown North • Middletown South • Neptune Ocean Township • The Ranney School • Raritan • Red Bank Catholic • Red Bank Regional Rumson-Fair Haven Regional • Shore Regional • St. John Vianney • St. Rose

The 8th Annual Basie Awards are sponsored in part by Barnabas Health – Monmouth Medical Center. This partnership promotes awareness of the importance of the arts in physical and mental well-being. Photos: Brian Stratton

History On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership of Joseph Stern of of Newark, thethe Burns and with Joseph Stern Newark, Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way for Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission. the land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, first to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org.

One of just five recording artists to have Top 40 Hits in each decade after 1955, Johnny Mathis made a name singing romantic ballads like “Chances Are,” “Misty,” “Wonderful, Wonderful,” “It’s Not For Me To Say” and “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late,” his duet with Deniece Williams. Three times Grammy nominated, and twice inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his Greatest Hits collection spent 490 weeks (almost 10 years) on the charts, a feat recorded by the Guinness Book of World Records. I’m IMPORTANT As a mom, I play many roles. I am the chauffeur, errand-runner, chef, and costume-maker to three daughters. Making sure my girls have everything they need leaves little time to take care of myself. But when it comes to getting my mammogram, I make it happen! Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram?

I am a mom. I am a leader. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305.

Saturday, May 11, 7 & 9:30PM Brian Regan’s observational, self-deprecating, and most importantly, clean humor concerns everyday events like shipping a package, or visiting the eye doctor. Frequently talking about childhood activities like Little League, spelling bees, and science projects, his material is universal, and has been widely praised by sources as diverse as Slate, The Onion, and The Wall Street Journal. Since winning the 1988 Funniest Person in New York contest, he’s won the 1996 American Comedy Award for Best Comedian, appeared on the TV shows of Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien, and starred in his own Showtime and Comedy Central Specials. Travis Tritt

Wednesday, June 26, 8PM Grammy Award-Winner, Travis Tritt was one of the leading country singers of the early ‘90’s, holding his own against Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson. He was the only one not to wear a hat and the only one to dip into bluesy Southern rock. Consequently, he developed a gutsy, outlaw image that distinguished him from the pack. Throughout his career he had a string of platinum albums and hit singles including “Can I Trust You,” “Foolish Pride,” “It’s a Great Day to be Alive,” “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore” and “Best of Intentions.” In association with:

David Byrne & St. Vincent Friday, June 28, 8PM

David Byrne is well known as the musician who co-founded the group Talking Heads in New York. Talking Heads took popular music in new directions, both in terms of sound and lyrics, and also introduced an innovative visual approach to the genre. In 2002 Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Annie Clark, better known by her stage name St. Vincent, is an American singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She began her music career as a member of The Polyphonic Spree and was also part of Sufjan Stevens’ touring band before forming her own band in 2006. Clark released her debut album, Marry Me in July 2007. In 2012 Byrne and St. Vincent released Love This Giant. Though Byrne and Clark each have an unmistakable sound and persona that have made them such compelling performers on their own, their voices manage to blend naturally, effortlessly. This year Byrne and Clark embark on tour in support of their collaboration. Scan code for show info & video of David Byrne & St. Vincent Buy tickets 24/7 at www.countbasietheatre.org

About the Operations of the Count Basie Theatre The Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation organized under the section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The designation indicates that the corporation’s purpose is to provide a community service. It can accept tax deductible donations and all funds it generates must remain within the corporation to pay regular operating costs or to be reinvested in new programming or capital improvements. Any surplus funds cannot be retained by an individual or other entity. There are no owners or shareholders. The organization holds its assets in trust for the community. The Count Basie Theatre, Inc. is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of civic and community leaders who volunteer their time and receive no compensation for their efforts. Operations are conducted by a paid professional staff according to the policies and direction established by the Board in the By Laws and the Mission Statement of the organization. The results of the corporation’s operations are a matter of public record and copies of its annual financial filings with the state and federal government are available either from the organization itself or from the appropriate government agency. The Count Basie Theatre Foundation, Inc. is the Theatre’s fundraising arm. Also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, the Foundation was created to provide operating support to the Theatre, raise the capital needed to restore the Theatre and to create an endowment. The Foundation oversees Membership, Major Gifts, Benefit Concerts, Corporate Sponsorships and Special Events. Please see the Count Basie Theatre’s website for specific details at www.countbasietheatre.org, click Donate or call Shannon Eadon in the Development Office at 732-224-8778 x 128. The mission of the Count Basie Theatre is to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region, foster an understanding and appreciation for the ennobling power of the performing arts and create an opportunity for cultural enrichment for people at all economic levels. It is also our mission to develop and maintain a world-class venue that enhances the enjoyment of these entertainment and education programs, contributes to the cultural and economic vitality of the community and the region, and honors the memory of Count Basie. Each year the Theatre hosts approximately 200 public events, attended by about 200,000 people. Half of these events are presented by the Theatre itself, while the other half are presented or produced by other organizations renting the Theatre. In the case of a Theatre rental production, the Theatre earns a rental fee and is reimbursed for its other costs. The producer assumes the cost of engaging the artist and staging the event, establishes ticket prices and receives the income. In the case of an event presented by Count Basie Theatre, the Theatre has determined that it is in the community’s best interest to present a particular program or artist and the Theatre takes the financial risk. If there is a surplus after costs have been covered, the Theatre retains the funds. If there is a loss, the Theatre must cover it from other sources, including membership contributions. Consistent with its mission, the Theatre’s own programming focuses on those programs which would otherwise not be available in this community.

Buddy Guy

with Special Guest Quinn Sullivan Saturday, June 29, 8PM

An impassioned singer and electric guitar player capable of wild performance and great subtlety, Buddy Guy is both a pioneer and a living link to blues history. Once the goto guitarist for Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson, he became the chief influence on the next generation of guitar heroes, like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee himself, he’s still vital; his 2010 release, Living Proof, won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. He’s won five other Grammy Awards since 1991.

Love at the Basie... Spotlight on Count Basie Theatre Ushers Barbara A. Ely & Bernd (Ben) F.J. Koeppl CBT: How long have you both been working at the Basie? Barbara: I’ve worked at CBT for over three years and Ben started this past January. CBT: What is your favorite part about working here? Barbara: We love helping the theatre and its patrons and making them feel good about coming to the Basie. Ben and I enjoy contributing to that. CBT: Where did the two of you meet? Barbara: We were both widowed and met online through a dating site.

A little tidbit about each of their “other” jobs or careers... Ben was in the Navy for 21 years as an aircrew survival equipment-man and retired a Senior Chief. Then he worked for USPS for 20 more years and retired again. In retirement he worked security at a Whiting facility and still does that when he is needed.

CBT: What are your favorites shows you’ve seen at the Basie? Barbara: Ben loved Bobby Collins, and I loved Buddy Guy & Kenny G.

A little about their wedding and the storm’s effect on it...

Barbara was Membership Director at the YMCA before doing her graduate work. After earning a Counseling degree she taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University and was the designated counselor for students with learning disabilities. She began ushering for Two River Theater in ‘06 after her former husband died. She still does that, as well as being the VP of their Guild and the TRTC Guild Newsletter Editor.

Barbara and Ben had planned a small formal wedding ceremony at home November 3, 2012 but Hurricane Sandy left them without heat or electricity. With most of the community a disaster area, they asked their guests to arrive early - during daylight - and to expect a candlelit reception. As the sun set, Ben took his place in his tux and the guests began humming the wedding march. Barbara entered the living room carrying a bouquet of mums snatched from the bushes in the front yard! Love filled the room with all the warmth and light they needed. It was absolutely magical.

The Count Basie Theatre congratulates Barbara and Ben on their wedding and thanks them for their service to the Basie! If you are interested in becoming a Count Basie Theatre usher and joining our talented team, please contact Mary Hill at 732-224-8778 x 117.
