CAUSES, GALAS & GOLF

OH MY! Two gala concerts and a million reasons why this spring at the Basie could change our community forever. PLUS!

Norah Jones Buddy Guy Rob Thomas Jackie Mason GLEE’s Jane Lynch Spandau Ballet Melissa Etheridge And more!

Note from Adam Philipson

President & Chief Executive Officer, Count Basie Theatre As the cover of Showtime suggests, we’ve been granted a true wish. A once in a lifetime opportunity! The Count Basie Theatre will be the recipient of funds raised through the 2015 Charles Lafitte Foundation’s Golf Classic, with proceeds helping us to create an endowment for our suite of education and outreach programs. The most amazing part: Every dollar we receive will be matched up to $1 million dollars. Please understand our enthusiasm: As a non-profit arts organization, this is an unprecedented opportunity. It’s also a reflection and recognition of the invaluable programs and contributions our nonprofit theatre gives to this community. This endowment will allow the Count Basie Theatre to offer its arts education and outreach programs in perpetuity. No one says it better than Jeffrey Citron, co-founder of The Charles Lafitte Foundation: “The potential for the arts to have a positive impact on children for a lifetime of cultural enrichment is why Count Basie Theatre’s mission is so important for our community. Every child should be exposed to the arts. With an endowment for Count Basie Theatre’s educational programming, we can help make that happen for children at all socioeconomic levels for years to come.” Can you see why we are excited? We are being given a unique opportunity to provide differencemaking programs in perpetuity. Forever. But we’ll need your help. We invite you to purchase a sponsorship or a foursome at the golf classic. If you’re not a golfer, any donation will be counted. You can get information on donating right on the front page of countbasietheatre.org. You can even make a gift of appreciated stock. As long as you’ve held the stock for more than one year, you may take a charitable tax deduction for the market value of the stock on the date it is transferred, and neither you nor the Basie has to pay capital-gains taxes upon selling. The combination can result in a bigger deduction (and more tax savings) for you -- and a bigger gift for the Basie than if you were to sell the stock, pay the taxes, and donate the net proceeds. And through the Lafitte Foundation’s golf classic, it will be matched! There are caveats and limitations, so consult with your tax advisor for details. Let’s make this happen and ensure that a lifetime of programs designed will enhance life skills and broaden minds for generations to come.

DAVIDSEDARIS APRIL 15 • 8PM

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphe misms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. David Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice, as well as collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and his most recent book, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, each of which became an immediate bestseller.

APRIL 16 • 8PM For two decades, the contemporary jazz quartet known as FOURPLAY has enjoyed consistent artistic and commercial success by grafting elements of R&B, pop and a variety of other sounds to their unwavering jazz foundations. SPYRO GYRA is a jazz juggernaut who released their 30th album of new material The Rhinebeck Sessions in 2013, which Jazztimes called “inspired.” Theirs is an unlikely story of a group with humble beginnings in Buffalo, NY who has continued to reach an international audience over nearly forty years, resulting in sales of over 10 million albums and having played over five thousand shows on five continents.

APRIL 17 • 8PM Jackie Evancho’s first performance on NBC’s variety show America’s Got Talent left audiences and judges astonished that such a perfect, beautiful, soprano voice could come from a 10 year-old girl. The young soprano from Pittsburgh with the stunning voice won runner-up and launched her soon-to-be legendary career, signing with Columbia Records shortly thereafter. In a little over two years, Jackie’s unique, gorgeous, soprano voice has won her millions of fans and her recordings have dominated the music and DVD charts. Now 14, Billboard Magazine named Jackie to their list of music movers-and-shakers under the age of 21 in 2011 and again in 2012 because the soprano’s “spellbinding, operatic vocals possess a power and poignancy that often moves listeners multiple times her age to tears.”

April 22 • 4PM “One evening, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight.” So begins Enchantment Theatre Company’s The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon, based on the seven delightful picture books by Crockett Johnson that follow the zany adventures of an inventive young boy. As it turned out, there wasn’t any moon that night nor was there a path to walk on, so Harold simply drew them. And thus his journey began. Resourceful and brave, Harold creates the world he wants to explore, using nothing more than a big purple crayon and his sky’s-the-limit imagination.

APRIL 22 • 8PM Since his debut on season one of Last Comic Standing and being voted one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch,” audiences can’t get enough of the larger than life comedian. Ralphie fills theaters and comedy clubs on his non-stop nationwide tour and has released an unprecedented five one-hour comedy specials in the past 10 years. Ralphie has a no nonsense point of view and the ability to connect with a diverse audience by pointing out society’s hypocrisies. Ralphie doesn’t shy away from touchy topics or ethnic jokes, nor does he bite his tongue when society suggests, because he sincerely believes that as long as what he’s saying is true, people need to hear it. Lovable enough to get away with anything, Ralphie continues to capture the hearts of thousands on his sold out tours and promises to make you gleefully uncomfortable.

MAY 1 • 8PM The surface smarts and radio-friendly sheen of Spandau Ballet’s biggest, most pervasive hits are familiar to anyone in possession of a radio or a laptop, anyone who was born in the last 50 years or indeed anyone who regularly goes to the movies or watches TV. They spearheaded an era of new pop with worldwide blue-eyed soul hits such as “True”, “Gold”, “Communication” and “Lifeline.” Steered by their manager Steve Dagger, Spandau became one of the most commercially successful bands of the Eighties, and during their career they notched up 23 hit singles and spent a combined total of in excess of 500 weeks in the UK charts, and achieved album sales of over 25 million worldwide. Songs, like “True”, “Gold” and “Through the Barricades” have become standards, while “True” has now achieved almost four million plays in North America alone. They came, they saw, they partied. And then they left, leaving a good-looking legacy. Now they’re back for one more dance.

I’m IMPORTANT I believe in the power of early detection. I lost my husband to colon cancer at a young age. So, while my health has always been important, it is even more important now. I am my children’s only parent and their biggest cheerleader. They also know that Mom is a strong advocate for preventative medicine.

That is why I make it a priority to visit the Women’s Center at Riverview. The Center rivals any in New York or New Jersey. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Won right here in our community. I continue to put my health in her hands because I believe she is the best. I am a parent. I am an advocate. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305. Or visit www.RiverviewMedicalCenter.com/WomensCenter

EMBAJADORES DEL MARIACHI

MAY 5 • 7:30PM Part of the romance of Mariachi songs is that all things are possible. The humor, the spirit, and even the bittersweet, inspire us to a world where we live out our dreams. In that same way, much of the excitement of Jóse Hernàndez’ Mariachi Sol de Mexico® is that all things mariachi are possible. Unprecedented, unrivaled and uninhibited, the impact of Jóse Hernàndez and his Sol de Mexico® on mariachi and all music is undeniable. After forming Mariachi Sol de Mexico® in 1981, Jóse’s charismatic arrangements and signature trumpet playing made the group an instant and lasting success: Sol de Mexico® has played to sold out halls from New York’s Lincoln Center to Viña del Mar in Santiago, Chile. They have also played for four U.S. Presidents (Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush) including performances at the White House! Jóse’s records have been nominated for multiple Grammy awards and it is a tribute to the impact of Jóse that Sol de Mexico® was invited to play at the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards.

May 21 • 8PM Kick off Memorial Day weekend as the 15 year tradition known as Red Bank’s hippest event, BobFest returns to the Count Basie Theatre! This year’s BobFest celebrates not only Bob Dylan’s 74th birthday, but the release anniversary of two essential albums that changed the direction of folk music and began to rewrite the rules of rock. Recorded 50 years ago, Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited created a watershed moment in rock history by obliterating the dividing line between folk and rock. Proceeds from BobFest will benefit Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization. Learn more about Autism Speaks at www.autismspeaks.org.

RUBBER SOUL AND MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

JUNE 13 • 8PM With a commitment to the accurate reproduction of The Beatles’ repertoire, The Fab Faux treat the seminal music with unwavering respect, and are known for their painstaking recreations of the songs. Far beyond a cover band, they play the music of The Beatles so impeccably that one must experience it to believe it. Imagine hearing complex material like “Strawberry Fields Forever” or “I Am the Walrus” performed in complete part-perfect renditions; or such harmony-driven songs as “Because”, “Nowhere Man”, and “Paperback Writer”, reproduced not only note- for-note, but with extra vocalists to achieve a double-tracked effect. The musical virtuosity of The Fab Faux – in actuality five of the hardest working musicians in NYC – completely up-ends the concept of a Beatles tribute band.

Steven Schultz Count Basie Theatre Board Member

In 2009, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Since the diagnosis, I find every day being an eye opening, lifechanging journey. When my wife Jaime and I embarked on the task of learning how to cope with the affliction of this disease, we realized that so many people had no idea about the impact MS can have on an individual and their families. Together with you, it’s our hope that we can help make a difference in the quest to find a cure for this debilitating disease. Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disorder thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It has affected more than 2.3 million people worldwide, rarely producing the same symptoms in each person within its path. The cells of the immune system attach to the Myelin sheath that protects the nerve fibers which surround the brain and spinal cord. These nerves take messages to and from muscles, the skin, body organs and tissues. This is when damage occurs and symptoms appear, causing flare ups also known as exacerbations. These vary from each individual, lasting from one day to weeks, sometimes bringing permanent disability. Jaime and I, for a while, have discussed a way to really give back to MS and to help find a cure. That’s why we founded MS Rock For A Cure, taking place this year the Count Basie Theatre on Saturday, June 13. The event features world-renowned Beatles tributeers The Fab Faux, and gala packages include pre- and post-show activities and additional amenities detailed at countbasietheatre.org. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated. Proceeds from this event will be distributed to the MS Society for Research and MS related programs. We hope you can join us in the celebration concert event to raise money and awareness, and help fight this disease.

Lindsey Stirling is one of the biggest artist development breakthrough stories in recent years. A classically trained violinist from Gilbert, AZ, Lindsey has entered a futurist world of electronic big beats and animation, leaping through the music industry with over 675 million views on YouTube, Billboard chart-topping hits and sold out tours worldwide. On stage, Stirling moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, “dropping the beat” like a rave fairy. Stirling is the model of a modern independent recording artist, with a symbiotic relationship with her fans. She is famed for taking “requests” and has recorded unique versions of the themes from Phantom Of The Opera and Game Of Thrones, the computer games “Zelda,” “Pokemon,” and “Skyrim,” as well as pop songs by Michael Jackson and Rihanna; She uploads them all to Lindseystomp, a secondary YouTube channel packed with music videos and short comedy films, many featuring her alter-ego – a ‘superfan’ named Phelba. A motivational speaker in her spare time, Stirling uses her own story to show teenagers that you’ve got to have confidence in the very thing that makes you unique – then wait for the world to catch up.

KEB’ MO’ JUNE 18 • 8PM

Three-time Grammy award-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist and contemporary blues artist, Keb’ Mo’ has released his 12th studio album, titled BLUESAmericana, on Kind of Blue Music. Since it’s release on April 22, the album has spent several weeks at #1 on the Soundscan Blues Album chart, including a return to the #1 spot after a period of time following it’s release.

JUNE 20 • 8PM Norah Jones first emerged on the world stage 13 years ago with the February 2002 release of Come Away With Me, her self-described “moody little record” that introduced a singular new voice and grew into a global phenomenon, sweeping the 2003 Grammy™ Awards and signaling a paradigm shift away from the prevailing synthetic pop music of the time. Since then, Jones has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and become a 9-time Grammy™-winner. She has released a series of critically acclaimed and commercially successful solo albums - Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), The Fall (2009), and Little Broken Hearts (2012) - as well as two albums with her country collective The Little Willies.

FRIDAY, JULY 31 & SATURDAY, AUGUST 1 • 8PM Rob Thomas has been one of modern music’s most compelling and commercially successful artists for well over a decade – between Matchbox Twenty, his solo work, and his various collaborations with iconic artists like Santana, Mick Jagger and Willie Nelson, his tally now stands at more than 80 million albums sold worldwide. Arguably the most accomplished singer/songwriter of his generation, it all comes back to the creative source for Rob. As he says with typical understatement, “I’m a guy who hears songs in his head, and I have to write them down, and I have to get them out. I’m just lucky enough that I can make it my life’s work.” Opening this tour is American Authors. A four-piece alt-rock outfit based in Brooklyn, American Authors use their razor-sharp musicianship and natural mastery of Songcraft as a jumping-off point for sonic exploration. Their debut album Oh, What a Life features their breakout hit song “Best Day of My Life.”

GALA NIGHTS Traditionally a one-night affair, this year the Count Basie Theatre’s Summer Gala is seeing double The Count Basie Theatre’s annual summer gala is often a grand affair – but this year, it’ll be will be twice as nice. Literally. On Saturday, June 20th, Norah Jones makes her Count Basie Theatre debut for the first of our two gala concert events. A week later, on Friday, June 26th, the legendary Hall And Oates take the stage, fresh off their induction last year into the Rock n’ Roll Hall Of Fame. Combined with the Charles Lafitte Foundation’s Charity Golf Classic on June 29th (see the cover story), it’s nine days that will reach decades into the Count Basie Theatre’s future. This year’s gala honoree is WithumSmith+Brown, a regional public accounting firm with national and international capabilities, including an office here in Red Bank. “WithumSmith+Brown has been a consistent supporter of the Count Basie Theatre over the last decade,” says Tom Widener, Chairman of the Count Basie Theatre’s Board of Trustees and Directors. “It’s our honor to recognize the firm’s support, not only to the Basie, but to countless individuals, organizations and institutions both locally and nationally.” General public tickets for both concerts were snapped up in record time, however, gala tickets – tax deductible minus $100 per person and inclusive of the concerts, plus a pre-show champagne cocktail reception (June 20th) and / or pre-show drinks and post-show dinner, dancing and entertainment courtesy of Brian Kirk & The Jirks (June 26th) are available for $550 by contacting Shannon Eadon at 732-224-8778 ext. 128. “We’re so grateful to Daryl Hall, John Oates and Norah Jones for coming aboard to support our cause,” says Basie President / CEO Adam Philipson. “That our mission to better the community through arts education and outreach would attract such talent is a testament to the good we know can come from programs such as ours.”

A HOLE IN How can you help the Count Basie Theatre affect change in our community? It’s twice as easy as you think. The Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) is a charity that’s been supporting causes like children’s advocacy, education, medical initiatives and the arts. This year, we’re proud to announce that funds raised through the foundation’s annual Golf Classic will go towards creating an endowment that will help run our arts education and outreach programs in perpetuity. It’s literally the opportunity of our performing arts center’s lifetime. Here’s how you can help -- even if you don’t golf! You can visit thebasie.org, click the Charity Golf Classic button on the front page, and make a donation. Any donation. And the CLF will match it dollar for dollar. If you can donate $5, it’s $10. If you can donate $10, it’s $20. And if you can donate more, it’s ultimately twice as much. It’s two times any opportunity we’ve ever had to build a better community through the arts. Make your donation today at thebasie.org. And on behalf of the thousands of students, teachers and people in our community we hope to help forever: Thank you.

ONE

N O I L L I M

YOUR SUPPORT AND OUR NONPROFIT MISSION If we can create $500,000 in donations via the Charles Lafitte Foundation’s 2015 Charity Golf Classic, that will create a $1 million dollar endowment, which will allow us to provide our arts education and outreach programs in perpetuity. In other words: Forever. • Your support will double the number of students served by our bus-in program. This program has transported thousands of Abbott district and Title I students to the theatre for our educational and thought-provoking performance. • Your support will help us to expand our Professional Development Program into new school districts. A partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center, this program provides teachers with tools to introduce new ideas and ways of thinking to enhance teaching of the core curriculum. • Your support would allow additional, at-risk school districts to be added to the Basie’s outreach program. The Basie provides teaching artists, instruments and classroom materials for pre-, during- and after-school programs in music, dance and theatre arts. • Your support will scholarship nearly 100 students from underserved communities into the Basie’ Performing Arts Academy and resident programs, like ROCKIT! At the Basie, the Central Jersey Youth Chorale and the Jazz Arts Project.

AUGUST 4 • 8PM What do you get when you mix up a marketing genius that does video, a studio engineer that writes music, a pianist that had a successful solo career, and a cellist that does pretty much everything? The Piano Guys: a miraculous meeting of “guys” with the same intrinsic purpose – to make a positive impact in the lives of people all over the world through music videos. Musicians Jon Schmidt (piano), Steven Sharp Nelson (cello) and “equally significant members” Paul Anderson and Al van der Beek have been seen on programs from The Today Show to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. So far, their smash videos have netted more than 293 million views on YouTube and earn more than a half-million new views daily.

THANK YOU to all of my current and past clients for making 2014 a successful year. It is your continued support and trust in my real estate services that has made my success. It was Walt Disney’s MISSION to be one of the world’s leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. His MISSION continues to exceed his clients expectations today and it all started with a “MOUSE.” It is my MISSION to be a leading real estate agent providing service excellence and timely real estate information to my clients. My MISSION continues today as I celebrate my 19th year earning the NJAR® CIRCLE OF EXCELLENCE SALES AWARD®. I am committed to exceeding my clients expectations and for me it all started with a “HOUSE.”
