Dear Patron, You can’t help but notice that this issue marks the beginning of a new look for our Showtime concert program. It’s just one of the many changes you will see over the next few months as we freshen our brand to better represent who we are as an organization. The interview with Chazz Palminteri, performing here in June, will be the first in a series that will give readers a peek into the lives of performers they’ll see on the Basie stage. We hope you will take Showtime home as a keepsake. This quarter will be one of the busiest in Basie history – coming off a March where we produced 30 shows in 31 days across three venues, including the Basie itself, the Two River Theater, and five performances of Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding at Buona Sera Restaurant. In fact, in a single day, we hosted 1,000 students for an educational bus-in show, our classrooms and rehearsal spaces were filled with Rockit At the Basie and performing arts students, we hosted a performance with comedian Bobby Collins on our main stage and we produced the opening night of Tony n’ Tina next door! By the end of that day, it became evident that we’re beginning to create what has been envisioned and what the Count Basie Theatre Board of Directors and Trustees hired me to help us become – a Regional Center for the Performing Arts and Education. Under the direction of Yvonne Lamb Scudiery, our Education, Outreach and Partnership programs continue to expand with matinee bus-in shows for students, professional development workshops for teachers, and our Central Jersey Youth Chorale, comprised of 35 elementary and middle school students representing 11 Monmouth County schools. Our commitment to diverse programming that serves our community will continue to fill the stage, classrooms, and rehearsal spaces for every hour we can squeeze from each day. Over the next year, one of our major goals will focus on the renovation, expansion and restoration of our backstage area, with the intention of making it as beautiful and world-class as the theatre itself. The dressing rooms, green room and loading dock areas have seen little change since 1926, and are barely sufficient to handle the demands of the Basie’s schedule and performers. I know I speak for the boards and our staff in saying that we’re eagerly looking forward to the Count Basie Theatre’s next chapter. With your continued support we can further realize our exciting vision while remaining a vital economic engine for the region.

April 17 • 8PM With the release of his self-titled debut in 2004, Amos Lee immediately earned the attention of not only the press and discerning music fans, but also of his fellow artists. He has toured with legendary artists like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, collaborated with Norah Jones and Lucinda Williams, and been regularly touted as a favorite songwriter and performer by the likes of The Band Perry and Lady Antebellum. The Philadelphia native is touring in support of Mountains Of Sorrow, Rivers Of Song (Blue Note Records), the follow-up to 2011’s chart-topping Mission Bell. The New York Times hailed the new album as a “serenely sure-footed effort from Amos Lee, a singer-songwriter who rarely delivers anything else” and Elmore observed, “Mountains of Sorrow may be Lee’s finest yet.” Entertainment Weekly praised his “strikingly soulful voice” while Paste noted, “Lee makes sorrow shimmer… Like Jackson Browne for another generation, Lee understands the staining traces of love.” The album was produced by Jay Joyce (Emmylou Harris, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant) and features guest vocals by Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin.

History On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership with Joseph Stern Newark, Burns and of Joseph Stern of of Newark, thethe Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way for Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission. the land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, first to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org.

Mariachi is music seeped in an ages-old male-dominated profession, in which everything, from the costumes to the instruments – to the melodies and themes – must adhere to immutable Mexican lore. Mariachi Reyna stays true to their music and creative spirit, mixing recognized masterpieces of mariachi with some popular cover tunes. In all, they come off more folk than rock, more old time than new age. This is a Mexican tradition with an American flare.

SINBAD MAY 9 • 8PM

Actor and comedian Sinbad arrived on the comedy scene with a “hit’em in the face” style of comedy that has kept audiences laughing in the aisles for more than two decades. He freely admits that he doesn’t knows any jokes, except for the ones that his dad told him “back in the day.” The basis of his humor comes from everyone he meets, everything he’s seen, and everything he’s done. Ranked by Comedy Central as one of the top 100 standup comedians of all time, Sinbad has built a loyal following by taking audiences’ painful trials or embarrassing tribulations of day-by-day life, throwing them back in their faces, and causing an uproar of comedic hysteria.

A EVENING OF BROADWAY with David Stone & Peter Marks

MAY 13 • 7PM

Join famed theater critic Peter Marks as he interviews Monmouth County’s own David Stone. One of Broadway’s most important producers, Stone opened Wicked in 2003 -- which continues to be Broadway’s biggest blockbuster. He has also produced such successes as Next To Normal (one of only eight musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize for drama), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (starring the then-relatively unknown Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family), The Vagina Monologues, the 2003 revival of Man of La Mancha (starring Brian Stokes Mitchell), Three Days of Rain (starring Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd and Bradley Cooper), The Diary of Anne Frank (starring Natalie Portman) and the muchanticipated musical If/Then, that opend on Broadway this March and starring Wicked’s Tony™-award winning Idina Menzel. David was raised in Marlboro. Conducting the discussion will be Jersey native Peter Marks, chief theater critic of the Washington Post. He previously worked as a theater critic and reporter at the New York Times, and before that, in New Jersey at the Bergen Record, Newark Star-Ledger and New Brunswick Home News (now known as the Home News-Tribune). He grew up in Old Bridge and East Brunswick. Excerpts from Stone’s productions will be shown, while audience members will have an opportunity to participate in a Q&A session. Proceeds from the evening benefit the Count Basie Theatre’s education and outreach program and the annual Basie Awards.

Get The Led Out captures the essence of Led Zeppelin’s recorded catalogue with a show spanning the mythic career of the legendary British band. Not an impersonator act, GTLO approaches the music like a classical performance. Six accomplished musicians deliver Zeppelin’s studio recordings with all the bells and whistles, re-creating the overdubs and studio tracks that Zeppelin themselves never performed live. From the rock anthems to the sit-down acoustic songs, GTLO’s attention to detail makes their show unique in the Zeppelin world. The Philadelphia Inquirer said, “…older fans could be heard bragging that they saw Zeppelin back in the day and that Get the Led Out is better. That might seem hard to believe until you witness the might and versatility of the players…”

Air Supply’s 1980 single, “Lost in Love” became the fastest selling single in the world. Their second single was “All Out of Love,” and that went up the charts even quicker. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of 20 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, with the other singles, sold more than 10 million copies. The trademark sound of Russell Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Graham Russell’s simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as Air Supply. However, it is the live shows that always hold audiences captive around the world.

JUNE 19 • 8PM The country-steeped garage band with a Cuban American lead singer emerged from Miami with their sultry debut that was equal parts innocence, intensity and vintage influences. But time has a way of melting when you’re busy living life – and two decades has passed since The Mavericks’ polyrhythmic brand of post-modern country has given the world “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” “Here Comes The Rain” and “Dance The Night Away.” With their new release 2012’s Suited Up And Ready EP, time melts once again and the band that defied definitions, blurred genres and made everybody feel good, is back. The “most interesting band in the world” has captured the infectious energy and robust sound from their shows on their first release on The Valory Music Co., IN TIME. Whether it’s the Buck Owens-influenced “Dance In The Moonlight,” the panoramic Orbison-esque “Born To Be Blue,” the horn-punctuated retro noir “Back In Your Arms Again” or Tejano-esque “All Over Again,” the Mavericks have once again found the way to make soul music and sole music.

Bromberg’s range of material, based in the folk and blues idioms, continually expand with each new album to encompass bluegrass, ragtime, country and ethnic music. By the mid-’70s, the David Bromberg Big Band included horn-players, a violinist, and several multi-instrumentalists, including David himself. With the release of Try Me One More Time, his 2007 solo return to the studio, David continued his musical revitalization, playing shows on his own, backed by (and supporting) Angel Band, his own David Bromberg Quartet, and reunions of the David Bromberg Big Band, the configuration depending on the circumstance. In 2010 Bromberg completed Use Me, which featured David collaborating with friends like John Hiatt, Levon Helm, Los Lobos, Tim O’Brien, Vince Gill, Widespread Panic, Dr. John, Keb’ Mo’ and others. His most recent release is Only Slightly Mad.

The man whose life is truly A Bronx Tale talks to the Basie about Robert De Niro, his favorite Italian-American film, and his own “Jersey” tale.

JUNE 26 & 27 You’re known as a New York guy, but not a lot of people know you’ve lived here in New Jersey. What do you love best about life at the Jersey Shore?

I had a farm in Colts Neck and I still go down to Long Beach Island every year. It is a great place for families - the water and beach is fantastic which makes us come back every year. A Bronx Tale famously depicts your coming of age in the rough-and-tumble Bronx. What has been the hardest, easiest or maybe even the most gratifying part of bringing these stories to the stage and silver screen? The most gratifying part would be the recognition of the working man. A Bronx Tale is not about the mafia. It is about Lorenzo, the average working man. The mafia always gets the press about the Italian-American communities. But the real people who make up the fabric of the neighborhood is the working men and women -- men and women who just want to give their children a better life. That is what A Bronx Tale is about.

Robert De Niro once said, “Good directors can bring certain things out of you, with their intensity or gentleness or sensitivity or understanding. They can make an actor feel he can do no wrong.” Mr. De Niro made his directorial debut with the story of your life. Did he apply his dynamic of making actors feel comfortable directing your own life story? Yes he did. He was very nurturing and caring with all the actors. Especially in A Bronx Tale. Because Bob, myself and Joe Pesci were the only actors in the movie. Everyone else was taken off the street. In fact, that is the real Eddie Mush in the movie. What do you think it is about A Bronx Tale that has made it so successful for such a long time? All the characters are archetypes. The father, Sonny, the mother, even the kids. A Bronx Tale is not about good and evil, but grey and gray. Sonny had his faults, and Lorenzo had his. The boy took the best of both of them and became a man. It is a very unique story that resonates with anyone from any culture. A Bronx Tale stands firmly in the pantheon of Hollywood films that depict storylines and lives of Italian Americans – films like The Godfather, Goodfellas and Mean Streets or television shows like The Sopranos, for example. Do you have a personal favorite, and why? I would have to say The Godfather, because that was the first time the Italian family was portrayed on film.

On January 25th, the Count Basie Theatre presented Amuse Bouche, a Parisian-inspired benefit gala which also served to honor Dr. Lawrence Sykoff, Headmaster Emeritus of the Ranney School in Tinton Falls, for his dedication to the theatre and lifelong devotion to education. Nine of New Jersey’s top chefs headlined the event, each preparing a dish in the spirit of amuse bouche – literally, a “gift from the chef.” Chefs included Fromagerie’s David Burke and Phil Deffina, Andrew Araneo of Drew’s Bayshore Bistro, Alice’s David Drake, Donna & Company’s Diane Pinder, Victor Rallo of Basil T’s and Undici, Anthony Bucco of the Ryland Inn, Maria Tisdall of Cheese… Please! and Ursino’s Peter Turso. Theatre Chairman Tom Widener used the occasion to announce the Basie’s next fundraising soiree – a summer gala entitled “A Little Help From Our Friends,” honoring Tracy and Nick Brown and featuring Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band, on June 20th. Amuse Bouche raised over $60,000 towards the Theatre’s future capital campaign, plus more than $40,000 towards the Basie’s educational and outreach programs.
