Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees & Directors Dear Patron, Thank you for joining us at the historic Count Basie Theatre tonight and Happy New Year! The Count Basie Theatre just completed a very successful year and I thought it would be worth recapping some of 2014’s highlights. The Basie was fortunate to host a number of world class performers last year across genres, including jazz great Pat Metheny, rising star Ariana Grande, pop and rock superstars like Jon Bon Jovi (in a show benefitting our friends at the Parker Family Health Center), John Legend and Rob Thomas, legendary performers such as Ringo Starr, Steely Dan, the Moody Blues and Merle Haggard, and comedians like Lewis Black and Bill Maher. 2014 was capped off by a great month of holiday performances with everything from the traditional (A Christmas Carol, The Nutcracker) to the unusual (A John Waters Christmas, children’s lit star Junie B. Jones and her Jingle Bells, Batman Smells stage show), culminating with the annual HOPE Concert led and organized by Bobby Bandiera, featuring music legends in a festive show raising money for deserving entities -- this year, Horizons and the Basie’s own arts education and outreach programs. We expect 2015 to be equally notable with shows in just the first few months from world-renowned performers such as Showtime cover artist Jay Leno, stage shows such as The Buddy Holly Story, the legendary Mummenschanz, Neil Berg’s 100 Years of Broadway, and Late Night Catechism, plus concerts with Billy Ocean, Spandau Ballet, Foreigner, Burt Bacharach, Jeff Beck and John Mellencamp. And perhaps best of all in a theatre named after our own Count Basie, 2015 will feature a homage to our jazz roots – with performances from Diana Krall, Spyro Gyra and Fourplay, Chick Correa and Bela Fleck, and – of course – the legendary Count Basie Orchestra with the New York Voices. We could not be more excited about the coming year. The Count Basie Theatre a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity could not do all that it does without you. We appreciate your continued support -- attending shows, becoming a member, supporting our fundraising shows and galas, and donating to the Basie (hopefully all of those!) Please enjoy the show and we look forward to seeing you again, many times.

I’m IMPORTANT I believe in the power of early detection. I lost my husband to colon cancer at a young age. So, while my health has always been important, it is even more important now. I am my children’s only parent and their biggest cheerleader. They also know that Mom is a strong advocate for preventative medicine.

That is why I make it a priority to visit the Women’s Center at Riverview. The Center rivals any in New York or New Jersey. I feel incredibly lucky to have Dr. Won right here in our community. I continue to put my health in her hands because I believe she is the best. I am a parent. I am an advocate. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. JANUARY 31 • 8PM Since its three year run on Broadway, Swiss mask theater troupe Mummenschanz has pioneered a new form of visual theater that has since spawned multiple new genres reclaiming their legacy. Formed by founding members Andres Bossard, Floriana Frassetto and Bernie Schürch, MUMMENSCHANZ has since inspired generations of show-goers across five continents over four decades. The ‘stories’ told are unique in that they have no sound or music; the language of Mummenschanz is universal. In the wordless universe of MUMMENSCHANZ, the ordinary becomes extraordinary when common materials, everyday objects (like toilet paper) and colorful abstract shapes and forms like the famous “Clay Masks,” “Slinky Man” and “Giant Hands” spring to life. By creating a playful yet compelling experience through the inventive use of shadow, light, and creative manipulation of objects, MUMMENSCHANZ offers timeless insight on the human condition. The result is a visually stunning spectacle of that transcends cultural barriers and sparks the imagination.

Much more than a concert, IN THE MOOD presents a retro 1940’s musical revue featuring the IN THE MOOD singers and dancers with the sensational String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra. The music and the arrangements are as authentic as it gets. This was a time that all America was listening and dancing to the same kind of music. In the 1940’s, the combination of up-tempo big band instrumentals and intimate, romantic ballads set the mood for a future filled with promise, hope and prosperity. This was the time when the music moved the nation’s spirit!

FEBRUARY 10 • 8PM The surface smarts and radio-friendly sheen of Spandau Ballet’s biggest, most pervasive hits are familiar to anyone in possession of a radio or a laptop, anyone who was born in the last 50 years or indeed anyone who regularly goes to the movies or watches TV. They spearheaded an era of new pop with worldwide blue-eyed soul hits such as “True”, “Gold”, “Communication” and “Lifeline.” Steered by their manager Steve Dagger, Spandau became one of the most commercially successful bands of the Eighties, and during their career they notched up 23 hit singles and spent a combined total of in excess of 500 weeks in the UK charts, and achieved album sales of over 25 million worldwide. Songs, like “True”, “Gold” and “Through the Barricades” have become standards, while “True” has now achieved almost four million plays in North America alone. They came, they saw, they partied. Late Nite Catechism is an uproariously funny play that takes the audience back to their youth. The irrepressible Sister teaches class to a roomful of “students.” Throughout the course of the class the benevolent instructor rewards the “students” for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other nifty prizes. Naughty students may well find themselves on stage sitting in a corner reflecting their actions. However, even the most reluctant “students” will be clamoring to get into this Sister’s class. Now in its 20th year, Late Nite Catechism has brought its nostalgic kick to every state in the U.S. as well as to Canada, the U.K., and Australia.

Equally at home on the concert stage or at a folk festival, Grammy-winning Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster is one of the most versatile and exciting young musicians on both the Folk music and Celtic music scenes. MacMaster’s many projects have seen her collaborate and perform with Alison Krauss, the Chieftains, Paul Simon, and Pavarotti. Natalie’s live performances are a testament to her incandescent musicianship and boundless energy, featuring foot-tapping rave-ups, heartrending ballads, and world-class step dancing. MacMaster is equally adept at hypnotizing a crowd while alone in the footlights. Natalie’s fiddling fireworks on traditional and contemporary Celtic melodies generate a kind of “Traditional Fusion” delivered with uplifting energy felt by the musicians and audiences of all ages.

William ‘Count’ Basie started The Count Basie Orchestra in 1935, in Kansas City, Missouri. Within a year, America was listening in on popular radio shows throughout the country to hear what would become “The greatest swing band in all the land!” A phenomenon was born in 1935, that is still going strong today! 2013 marked New York Voices 25th Anniversary and they show no signs of slowing down. This critically acclaimed vocal group has refined their musical story to a high art. They are known for their close knit voicings, inspired arrangements and unparalleled vocal blend. Their chameleon-like musicianship allows them to move seamlessly from setting to setting, be it orchestral/big band to the intimate trio lineup. With deep interests rooted in jazz, Brazilian, R & B, classical, and pop, their music mixes traditional sensibilities with more than a dash of the unexpected. The New York Voices are Peter Eldridge, Darmon Meader, Kim Nazarian and Lauren Kinhan.

LENOLENO ON

Awaiting his April 10th return to the Basie, we collected some of Jay Leno’s thoughts on late night, David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and the art of being funny.

Jay Leno returns to the Count Basie Theatre on April 10th. For tickets, visit the box office, call 732-842-9000 or log on to countbasietheatre.org

ON DAVID LETTERMAN “Dave and I have an interesting relationship in that when he came to town I think he admired my ability to perform,” Leno told The Hollywood Reporter last February, just as his stint on The Tonight Show was ending. “And I admired his ability to weave sentences and phrases. When he would get up at the Comedy Store, he was not a natural standup, so he was a little nervous. I think he’d watch me and I would just sort of plow ahead and be loud. He sort of admired that, and I admired his ability to be subtle. So I learned from Dave the subtleties of doing a joke, and I think he learned from me how to really sell a joke. So there was always a mutual admiration, and we always made each other laugh.

ON LEAVING LATE NIGHT and HIS REPLACEMENT, JIMMY FALLON “I’m really proud of Jimmy,” Leno told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in August. “He’s doing a terrific show. People try to create these feuds but we really are good friends. And you got to know when to step down. When you’re 35, 40 years old talking to a 22-year-old supermodel, that’s cool. When you’re 64, you’re that creepy old guy, thank you. You have to know when to go. I’m glad we kept the show No. 1. I have to admit I miss my friends, but I’m really enjoying myself. I have no regrets. I’m very happy the way things turned out.”

ON RETURNING TO THE ROAD AS A STAND-UP COMEDIAN “I’ve always been a stand-up comedian that had a day job,” Leno told the Los Angeles Times, just as his Tonight Show stint was ending. “This (the Tonight Show) is my day job. I’ve always been on the road every single weekend — and the week too — since I got this job. So I’m back on the road. It’s what you have to do if you want to do comedy. You can’t take a year off and come back. No one’s ever taken time off as a comedian and come back and been better. It doesn’t work that way. It atrophies. You have to do it all the time.”

ON HIS NEW TELEVISION VENTURE, “JAY LENO’S GARAGE” ON CBNC “It is definitely not ‘The Tonight Show,’” he recently told the Arizona Star. “It’s different. I get a little tired of these car shows where people yell at each other and throw tools and you build a car in a week. It’s a little more measured approach, maybe a little more history about the vehicles. … We try to explain to people how cars work because a lot of kids now, if your dad didn’t know how to use a screwdriver you probably don’t. I come from the generation where my dad knew how to fix a car when it broke and then he passed it on to me. Parents don’t do that anymore. Cars are a bit like refrigerators; it runs until it doesn’t run and then you get another one.”

ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN

MARCH 3 • 8PM One Night of Queen is a spectacular live concert, recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of arguably the greatest rock band of all time. In 2000, Gary Mullen won ITV’s “Stars In Their Eyes” Live Grand Final, with the largest number of votes ever received in the shows history. The record of 864,838 votes was more than twice that of the runner-up. Gary began touring on his own and in 2002 formed a band ‘The Works’, to pay tribute to rock legends Queen. Since May 2002, ‘Gary Mullen and the Works’ have performed throughout the UK, USA, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand to sell-out audiences. The outfit have also twice rocked the prestigious BBC Proms in the Park, in front of a very enthusiastic crowd of 40,000.

Burt Bacharach March 6 • 8PM

Six decades into one of songwriting’s most successful and honored careers – marked by 48 Top 10 hits, nine #1 songs, more than 500 compositions and a landmark 50+year run on the charts, Burt Bacharach’s music continues to set industry records and creative standards. Bacharach is viewed as the unique combination of one of the greatest composers of all time and the ultra-cool cult hero of the contemporary music set who often has several songs on various music charts in many countries simultaneously. Bacharach tours the world conducting orchestras with his own musicians and singers performing his music at his sold-out concerts. His songs have been recorded by legendary singers, such as Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, Linda Ronstadt, Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin. A recipient of three Academy Awards and eight Grammy Awards (including the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award and 1997 Trustees Award with collaborator Hal David), Bacharach revolutionized the music of the 1950s and 60s. Just a sampling of his compositions include: “I Say A Little Prayer”, “Magic Moments”, “On My Own”, “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”, and “Walk On By”.
