Note from Tom Widener

Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees & Directors Dear Friends, Fiscal year 2013 was a successful, noteworthy year for the Count Basie Theatre. Our shows attracted over 195,000 people, activity at the Basie created an economic impact of approximately $15.2 million in the local community, 1,314 people participated in our Performing Arts Academy and the Basie was once again listed as a Top 40 Venue worldwide for live performances by Pollstar. We also continued our outreach in to local schools, reaching 602 students in the Red Bank Primary School District. The Basie continues to attract terrific performers across a range of genres. As many of you know, the Count Basie got its start as the Carlton Theatre, opening its doors in 1926 as a vaudeville and movie house, showing many iconic films. With the help of the Count Basie Friends of Film, we have continued to show great free movies. WIth the help of Tom Bernard and Sony Pictures Classics, we have developed The Film For Thought Series, often pairing speakers with documentaries. In the past year, we have shown: Searching for Sugarman, West of Memphis, and Neil Young Journeys. We look forward to continuing to screen noteworthy films at the Basie and are pleased to report that with the support of many of you, the Basie entered the digital age this year with the acquisition of a state-of-the art digital movie projector. And, of course, the Count Basie Theatre, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, does rely on the support of many people and organizations - including our 1,479 members to continue to do all that it does. This fiscal year we also raised money through our annual gala “flick which focused on film and featured Jonathan Demme as our Honorary Chair and Randy Newman onstage; fundraising shows including the always popular Fab Faux; a golf outing, and straightforward appeals. We are grateful to all of you for your support across all these efforts. We also look forward to your continued support as we embark on a new capital campaign that will allow us to continue to refurbish our wonderful building and also move toward our goal of becoming a true regional center for arts and education with more performing and classroom space. Our strategic planning committee task force is hard at work now and we look forward to sharing our plans with you soon. Again, thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you throughout the year at the Basie.

Tom Widener Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees & Directors

Bob Bandiera’s Jersey Shore Rock n’ Soul Revue A Tribute to American Troubadours March 21 • 8PM

Bobby Bandiera’s famed Jersey Shore Rock n’ Soul Revue returns with “A Tribute to American Troubadours.” Directed by Bandiera himself, the Jersey Shore Rock n’ Soul Revue pays tribute to the great artists and writers of the American Song Book -- the canon of the most important and most influential American music of the 20th century. Birthed in the “Brill Building” in New York City in the 1950s and 1960s, a loosely affiliated group of songwriters and producers created the sounds that would define American pop, rock, and folk music for a generation. Bobby and band will pay tribute to these writers and performers including Carol King, Burt Bacharach, and Neil Diamond. Made possible in part by:

History On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership with Joseph Stern Newark, Burns and of Joseph Stern of of Newark, thethe Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way for Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission. the land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, first to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org.

JAZZ AT THE BASIE... WHERE IT BELONGS

Branford Marsalis

Pat Metheny Unity Group

Jazz belongs at the Basie – and two of its brightest and best-known stars are on their way home. Join us for an evening with NEA Jazz Master, renowned Grammy Award®winning saxophonist and Tony Award®nominee Branford Marsalis. As leader of one of the finest jazz quartets today, and a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, Marsalis and his Quartet of musical friends recently released Four MFs Playin’ Tunes. On this new album, the song takes center stage, with the band members bringing their considerable musical expertise to bear, as they focus on each tune as an important musical entity unto itself -- and not merely a vehicle for showcasing individual talent.

One of the most celebrated jazz artists in history returns to the Basie! 20-time Grammy Award®- winning guitarist Pat Metheny comes to Red Bank on March 23 with his Unity Band – saxophonist Chris Potter, percussionist Antonio Sanchez, bassist Ben Williams and multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi. “With this project, I want to form a platform that encompasses the entire range of things that I have done over the years,” Metheny says, “from Bright Size Life to Secret Story, from my group projects to the Orchestrion, and with this incredible group of musicians, Chris Potter, Ben Williams, Antonio Sanchez and Giulio Carmassi, just about anything is possible!”

Even though life as a mom on-the-go can get hectic, my children are everything to me, and I know I mean the world to them. So, with all the available technology and the knowledge that early detection is my best defense against breast cancer, why wouldn’t I make time for my annual mammogram?

I am a mom. I am a leader. I am important. You are important too. Make time for your mammogram. To make an appointment at the Women’s Center at Riverview, please call 732.530.2305.

Suzanne Vega

at Two River Theater March 20 • 8PM

Widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation, Suzanne Vega emerged as a leading figure of the folk-music revival of the early 1980s when, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, she sang what has been labeled contemporary folk or neo-folk songs of her own creation in Greenwich Village clubs. Since the release of her self-titled, critically acclaimed 1985 debut album, she has given sold-out concerts in many of the world’s best-known halls. In performances devoid of outward drama that nevertheless convey deep emotion, Vega sings in a distinctive, clear vibrato-less voice that has been described as “a cool, dry sandpaper-brushed nearwhisper” and as “plaintive but disarmingly powerful.” This event is to take place at Two River Theater located at 21 Bridge Ave in Red Bank. All tickets sold via Two River Theater box office.

The Count Basie Theatre is pleased to announce the addition of an A-Style 1905 Ebonized Steinway Piano to the Theatre; treasured by the O’Mealia Family for years. The following remembrance was written by the O’Mealias about this beautiful concert instrument: “Dad purchased the piano in the late 1950’s or early 1960’s for our mother who was an accomplished, but not professional piano player. She would play it most evenings (with a martini perhaps) while she waited for our dad to get ready… he was notoriously late for everything so it was played regularly as we grew up. Our dad passed away in 1976, but she continued to play it well into her 70’s and on rare occasions in her early 80’s. It traveled with her and gave her and all of us years of enjoyment. She would be pleased to know that it was going someplace where it would be appreciated and tickled to know that legendary artists would be able to enjoy its rich and grand sound. She would be honored to know that the Basie was committed to keeping it alive and putting it to such good use.” The Count Basie Theatre is a nonprofit organization and welcomes the opportunity to discuss planned giving options with our supporters. Please contact our Development Office if you would like to include the Basie in your estate planning to help continue our mission driven programs.
