Note from Adam Philipson President & CEO, Count Basie Theatre, Inc. Dear Patrons, Thank you for joining us. I’d like to thank those of you who have stopped me in the lobby to share your pleasure about the current direction of the theatre. I am so pleased about the level of artists we are presenting and the way the Basie team is working together to bring such high quality shows. Behind the scenes, our Board of Directors and Trustees are working hard as well. They are a passionate group of community members who love the Basie and are advocates and ambassadors to the community. They are also generous in helping us bridge the gap between what we earn from ticket sales and what it actually costs to run the theatre. It is a true labor of love to operate, renovate and restore this historic community treasure -- but we need help. For instance, our arts and education work might not be something you are as familiar with, but we are committed to opening our doors and sparking the imaginations of thousands of children every day of the year. Our work in area schools, our onsite educational programs, busing students in to see our world-class performances, Rockit! at the Basie, the Jazz Arts Academy at the Basie, our Central Jersey Youth Chorale and the fabulous Basie Awards are all examples of what we bring to the youth of our region. Our dedicated education team, under the direction of Yvonne Lamb Scudiery, has never been more active than it is now. In August, our inaugural Vanguard Awards honored four leaders who have demonstrated a life-long appreciation and passion for the arts and education: Maureen and Steven Van Zandt, Monmouth Arts Council executive director Mary Eileen Fouratt and county Freeholder Lillian Burry. Imagine our surprise and delight for the audience and the Rockit! students when Little Steven jumped onstage and performed the closing number with the Rockit! students. It was the perfect ending for all of us who believe that art has the ability to change lives. We want you to be part of this effort. Continue coming to shows. NOVEMBER 19 • 8PM Tap any member of The Time Jumpers on the shoulder and the face that turns to greet you will be that of one who’s made major contributions to the richness and vigor of country music. The Time Jumpers was established in Nashville in 1998 by an assemblage of high-dollar studio musicians who wanted to spend some spare time drinking beer and jamming with their sonically gifted buddies. The notion of building a rabidly devoted following was the last thing on their minds, but that’s what happened. To list the artists these pickers have recorded and toured with would be tantamount to posting all the Billboard country charts for the past 30 years. The list ranges from Ray Price to John Anderson to Carrie Underwood. The Time Jumpers—the band’s new and first album for Rounder Records—is also the group’s first studio project. Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 to promote traditional New Orleans jazz in all its authenticity. Legendary players like George Lewis, Sweet Emma Barrett and Kid Thomas Valentine, all rooted in the formative years jazz, were its original stars. That generation is long gone now, yet the hall is still in business and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to tour the world. In recent years, PHJB has performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians, ranging from groups like My Morning Jacket, Tom Waits, Merle Haggard, Pete Seeger, and the Del McCoury Band. In the heyday of the Jazz Age, New Orleans musicians learned new tunes all the time by listening to what their peers were doing in the dance halls and on their recordings. One of the aims of their most recent album is to stimulate that kind of cross-pollination among today’s New Orleans jazzmen. Though some traditional jazz purists may be surprised, the broader public will hopefully find this music engaging, enthralling—and irresistibly danceable.

OCTOBER 19 • 7:30PM Allen Toussaint is an American musician, songwriter and record producer, and one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B. Toussaint has crossed many paths in his illustrious 40 years plus career in music. He has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by, and performed with music giants The Judds, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Mac “Dr. John” Rebennack, Joe Cocker, Glen Campbell, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Etta James and countless others. After establishing himself as one of the greatest songwriters, accredited to him by BMI Music, Toussaint was honored with a Grammy nomination for the 1977’s song of the year, “Southern Night,” performed by Glen Campbell. His career has spanned over 40 years, all adding up to include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2012, Toussaint was inducted into the Song Writers Hall Of Fame and The Blues Hall Of Fame.

Cirque La Putyka is based in Prague in the Czech Republic and is a collective dedicated to “Contemporary Circus.” The company transcends the lines between acrobatics, contemporary dance, puppetry, concert and sport while striving to create specific theatre poetics and a perspective on the genre as a whole. The staging of Ghost Brothers is an amalgam of different styles – both old fashioned, resembling an old-style radio show, and yet, modern and unique in its interactive use of storytelling, music and singing to move the macabre Ghost Brothers story forward. The story goes that Joe McCandless saw his two older brothers battle over a girl which ended in the unfortunate deaths of all three. Now with Joe as an adult and two boys of his own, he’s watching an all too familiar scenario play out before his eyes. As the story continues, a malevolent shape circles the stage, singing about heaven and hell. Joe McCandless lingers in the dream-land café, remembering the events of his life, and is urged to action by the friendly bartender. In 2007, he goes to his family cabin in Darkland County, Mississippi, where his brothers died in 1967, to tell his own sons Frank and Drake his tale of brotherly love gone sour. Historians have settled on 1498 as the foundation date of the Vienna Hofmusikkapelle and in consequence the Vienna Boys Choir. Until 1918, the choir sang exclusively for the imperial court, at mass, at private concerts and functions, and on state occasions. Today there are around 100 choristers between the ages of ten and fourteen, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give around 300 concerts and performances each year in front of almost half a million people. The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of quintessentially Viennese music, waltzes and polkas by Lehar, Lanner, and Strauss. Both the choir and the Hofmusikkapelle have a long tradition of commissioning new works. The Vienna Boys Choir performs major choral and symphonic works, sometimes as part of the Hofmusikkapelle, sometimes with other orchestras and men’s choirs. They are regularly asked to supply soloists for large choral and orchestral works.

The word “HOPE” brings so much to mind -- thoughts for the future, getting everything you asked for on your Amazon wish list, a promotion at work... even a last-second field goal to win the game. Over the last decade, HOPE has meant magic at the Count Basie Theatre, as the namesake of the Bobby Bandiera-produced musical spectacles that have attracted thousands of fans and some of our state’s most notable and musical native sons. The HOPE concert returns to the Basie on December 22nd. “Being in a community that I feel is a good community,” Bandiera says, “where so many people contribute in their own way, I like to help out as much as I can, with anything that may need the attention of a benefit. Whether it be (past HOPE beneficiaries) the Parker Clinic, ALS awareness, the Cancer Institute... this time around, we have worthy candidates in need of funding and awareness.” Those candidates? The local chapter of student enrichment organization Horizons, and the very room you’re sitting in: the nonprofit Count Basie Theatre. Showtime sat down with the leaders of these organizations on their hopes for the future of their organizations and our community. The word “hope” brings so many things to mind – from a parent’s dreams for their children to political aspirations and beyond. How is HOPE defined by your nonprofit organization? Adam Philipson, Count Basie Theatre President / CEO: ‘Hope’ is what we try and achieve through the Basie’s outreach and educational programs -- giving a child a chance to find another avenue to manifest his/her greatest potential. Maggie Riker, President, Horizons Advisory Board: For me, hope is all about potential – when a person is ill, there’s hope for the potential for a cure, potential that they can overcome and heal from it. For the Horizons organization, hope means that we’re giving these children a chance to reach their full potential, and have hope that they can then better themselves and perhaps pull themselves out of the economic circumstances they find themselves in now.

Little Steven’s Big Cause E-Street vet joins ROCKIT!, urges support for educational rock n’ roll

For a few days in August, E Street came to Monmouth Street when longtime E-Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt and his wife Maureen joined our Rockit! At The Basie students for their ‘Woodstock & The Age Of Aquarius’ concert. Mr. Van Zandt provided musical guidance, while Mrs. Van Zandt – a seasoned dance and acting professional who actually attended Woodstock – provided input on choreography and styling. The Rockit! performance also celebrated the Van Zandt’s as two of the Basie’s firstever Vanguard Award recipients, honoring lifetime devotion to the arts in New Jersey. Monmouth County Freeholder Lillian Burry and Monmouth Arts Executive Director Mary Eileen Fouratt were also honored. “We didn’t come here tonight to bring attention to anything we do,” Mr. Van Zandt told the crowd. “We came down here to support the Count Basie Theatre and this Rockit! program. It’s fantastic.” The evening ended on an unexpected high note: Van Zandt joining the Rockit! troupe for a rousing rendition of Joe Cocker’s “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Proceeds from the evening will benefit future Rockit! scholarships, the theatre’s school bus-in program, and for professional development sessions associated with Mr. Van Zandt’s Rock and Roll: An American Story program (www.teachrock.org), a social studies and history curriculum which will be introduced in his native Middletown’s school district this fall.

HOPE for the Holidays continued

Maggie Riker: Obviously, the funds that are generated from the concert are going to hopefully allow us to expand our programming, and help even more children. Secondly, it will raise community awareness about what Horizons is, and what we do. Demand is so high for our program and its services that we actually have to turn away children that meet our criteria and could benefit from our program. Horizons students come to us in kindergarten and stay with us for eight years – so when a child comes in, we’re making an eight year commitment. We’ve expanded that commitment even further with high school programming and efforts to help students pursue higher education. As a result, our students are moving on to universities and colleges. So many of the greatest moments in music have come from benefit concerts – from the Concert for Bangladesh to Live Aid, all the way to the Basie’s very own HOPE Concerts. What is it about a concert that’s so effective in raising awareness and money for important causes? Tom Widener: Music quite simply has the power to transform. And concerts are a wonderful way to illuminate a need or a cause -- and often to create hope! Maggie Riker: Music is just such a great unifier of people – all different types of people can come together because of music, and since ancient times, music has been a conduit for gathering different types of people and unifying them in support of a certain message or cause. People enjoy coming together and they enjoy knowing they’re helping an important cause. Lori Hohenleitner: I don’t know if anything has the power to both move and unite simultaneously like live music. It is an individual and collective experience that can be a time to reflect and a call to action. Adam Philipson: Everyone associates music with their favorite or even their saddest memories. It has that power. It indelibly stamps a moment in time in your brain and the trigger for life is that song or even just a note. Connecting a cause with music has that power to transform. In closing, imagine yourself as an audience member walking out of the Basie on December 22nd. What is it you would like people to take home from the HOPE concert? Adam Philipson: It’s simple, really: the feeling that “hey, not only did I have the best time of the year with holiday cheer, but I know I helped to important organizations continue to do their excellent work in 2015.” Tom Widener: Exactly. A feeling that they had great fun, at a great venue, while helping two organizations committed to and focused on children. Maggie Riker: It’s important that people recognize what Horizons and the Count Basie Theatre do for the community. I don’t think people realize the work that’s happening – how grassrootsit is, and how much they could be a part of it by volunteering or offering financial support. Helping kids and helping the community helps everyone – that’s an important message to convey. Lori Hohenleitner: Progress is never achieved alone—when I walk out of the Basie on December 22 I know I will be walking side-by-side with friends who are now truly part of our Horizons family. Together, we will be united as a community because it will be clear that Hope is the seed of success.

DISCO HEALS! Gloria Gaynor, the Village People and the Michael Fux Foundation team for a magical night at the Basie On Saturday, September 6th, the Count Basie Theatre was honored to host a benefit event held by the Michael Fux Foundation. The star-studded affair, billed as “Red Bank’s Hottest Night,” took a “Disco Fever” theme, with headliners Gloria Gaynor (“I Will Survive”) and the Village People (“Y.M.C.A.,” “In The Navy”) providing the evening’s soundtrack. The bravest of the concert and after-party attendees donned sequined outfits and platform shoes. A planet-like disco ball, suspended above the near-capacity crowd, glittered the room with starlight. But for all the shimmering fabrics and colorful lighting, it was Michael Fux who shined above all. To kick off the night, Mr. Fux announced that the center would be built at Monmouth Medical Center’s Unterberg Children’s Hospital – and that he’d jumpstart the project with a personal donation of $1 million dollars. “I’ve been fortunate in life and business,” Mr. Fux said, “but what satisfies me most is the ability to improve the lives of children and their families during tough times like long hospital stays. This family center at Monmouth Medical aims to do just that.” Count Basie Theatre President/CEO Adam Philipson is proud of the theatre’s involvement in the cause. “We look forward to partnering on events like this with Mr. Fux and Monmouth Medical in the future,” said Philipson. The night was made possible by the Count Basie Theatre, R3 Ventures, Industry Magazine, Coco Pari, Buy-Rite Liquors of Jersey City, Patrizia’s in Red Bank, Double Cross Vodka, and dozens of individual and corporate sponsors.
