OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2013

SHOWTIME

Note from Raymond R. Moser, Jr. Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees I have been Chairperson of Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees for the past two years. My term is coming to a close in October. As I look back over the past two years, we have experienced significant change in the management structure and personnel of the Count Basie Theatre. The changes have lead to more efficient Theatre operation, greater staff cohesion and an improved experience for anyone attending a performance at the Theatre. Early in my term, the management of the Count Basie Theatre began to change. Numa Saisselin, Count Basie Theatre CEO of the past ten years accepted a new position in Florida, and Mark Hodges, Interim CEO of Count Basie Theatre Foundation began a new project in Camden County. During their tenures, the Count Basie Theatre and Foundation operated as two individual organizations, with two staffs and two CEOs. Faced with the option of replacing both positions, the Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees and the Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board of Directors saw this as an opportunity to unite both staffs under one CEO, thus creating a cohesive and more efficient organization. While we searched for a new CEO, Justine Robertson, former owner of the Webster Theatre in Hartford, CT and life-long resident of Rumson, was named Interim CEO of both the Count Basie Theatre and Foundation. In the fall of 2012, Adam Philipson, Managing Director of the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center, accepted a permanent CEO position. In addition to a single CEO, by the end of 2012, the Theatre Boards decided to merge their two separate executive committees into a single executive committee to represent both the Count Basie Theatre Board and the Count Basie Theatre Foundation Board – the executive committee is led by a chairperson from each Board. Although there continues to be two boards, the Theatre now has a single executive committee to promote a shared vision for the Theatre. As a final management change of my term, beginning with the October officer elections, the Boards have decided to have a single Chairperson represent both Boards on the executive committee; thus creating a single management voice representing both Boards. All of these changes to the management structure and

personnel have brought managerial efficiency and cohesion to decision-making and guidance provided to the Theatre management by the two Boards. As these managerial changes occurred, the Theatre continued to fulfill the two main components of the mission of the Theatre – provide (1) a broad spectrum of entertainment and educational programs, and (2) develop and maintain a world-class venue. Specifically, the Theatre increased its year over year attendance, attracted a wide variety of performers and increased the size and content of the education programs offered by the Arts Academy. As for physical changes, the Count’s Courtyard was completed (with tenting) to provide the Theatre with an attractive, open-air bar area and the offices of the Foundation were connected to and integrated with the Theatre office space. I take pride in what we have accomplished and I look to the future with optimism. Although I will no longer be Chairperson, I will remain a member of the Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees and, if my fellow Board members so desire, look forward to holding another officer position in the future. I’d like to thank the members of both Boards for their patience and support during the management reorganization and to thank you, our patrons, for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the Theatre.

History On July 29, 1925 the Red Bank Register reported that Joseph Oschwald of Little Silver announced plans to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street for a partnership with Joseph Stern Newark, Burns and of Joseph Stern of of Newark, thethe Burns and Schaffer Amusement Co. and Walter Reade, then New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The property and the rights of way for Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission. the land were purchased for $21,000, the projected construction cost was roughly $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the Theatre opened on Armistice Day, November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback,” starring Richard Dix, Carlton’s News Events and a ten piece orchestra. That summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theater Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more than 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade). The Theatre’s name was changed twice, first to the Red Bank Theatre and then to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. The Red Bank Register reported that the new Carlton Theatre, “…is a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort. Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph. Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the Theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The Theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years, until 1973, when an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665 and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie (1904-1984). On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the Theatre for the benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new historically accurate Theatre seats. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the Theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places. Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is composed of “live” music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the building. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through mediums that its founders could not have even imagined, their Theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their neighbors. A more expansive telling of the Count Basie Theatre’s history is available at www.countbasietheatre.org.

An Evening With

Alice Cooper:

Raise the Dead October 15, 8PM

Without Alice Cooper, there might never have been the NY Dolls, KISS, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Motley Crue, Slipknot or Rob Zombie... maybe not even David Bowie, or at least not Ziggy Stardust. The iconic hard rocker, who literally invented the concept of the rock concert as theater, returns to what he does best on Along Came a Spider (SPV Records), the 25th studio album of a long and illustrious career which began in 1969 with the release of “Pretties for You” on Frank Zappa’s Straight label. With a schedule that includes six months of every year on the road, Alice Cooper is bringing his own brand of rock psycho-drama to fans both old and new, and enjoying it as much as the audience does.

Chicago

November 3, 7:30PM Starting in 1967, well before all the hits started flowing, Chicago (21 Top 10 singles including “25 or 6 to 4,” “Make Me Smile,” “Does Anybody Really Know what Time It Is?”) established a reputation for its powerful live show. Fueled by a passion for music, Chicago’s members exploded the conventions of what rock music could or should be. The result was a groundbreaking new form, played by extraordinarily talented musicians.

West Point Jazz Knights November 10, 3PM

Join us for a free concert celebrating Veteran’s Day and the Count Basie Theatre’s 87th birthday by the West Point Jazz Knights! The Basie first opened on November 11, 1926, a holiday then known as Armistice Day. What better way to celebrate that occasion and commemorate the service of our veterans than with a concert by the West Point Jazz Knights? Playing innovative original compositions and arrangements, and recreating the sound of the great Big Band jazz ensembles, the Knights have over three decades of musical excellence as an ensemble. The musicians are all graduates of the most prestigious music schools, recruited by audition for service in the US Military Academy Band. They provide the music for Academy functions, and have played with jazz greats like Rufus Reid, Steve Turre, Randy Brecker, Jon Faddis, Benny Golson, and Benny Goodman at Lincoln Center.

Lewis Black The Rant is Due December 4 & 5, 8PM See comedian Lewis Black live onstage as part of his new tour, The Rant is Due. Black’s performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience; he yells so they don’t have to. He is a passionate performer, more pissedoff optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Black is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world.

Spotlight on Count Basie Theatre Bartender

Dana Topps

“All the... shows, they are all traditions for me.

How long have you worked at the Basie and in what capacities? I’ve worked at the Basie since I was a teenager! I used to come in everyday after High School and work as “helper” in the office in the afternoons. I would also usher shows at night (upstairs right door was my spot) and when I was old enough I moved over to bartering shows and backstage catering. I was promoted to the box office to sell tickets, where I was assistant manager for years. Alan started working security in 2004. He came to know the Basie from being the Fire Chief in Red Bank.

The Basie has been a part of your life for a long time, what do you think it is that makes this place so special? I consider the Basie the place where I grew up. I remember for years doing my homework in loge and bringing friends to shows when we had extra tickets. All the benefit shows, Christmas stuff, the plays, they are all traditions for me. Alan and I have 3 kids and I try to bring them out to live theatre as often as I can. I want the theatre to be as important to them as it is to me.

Did you and Alan meet at the Basie? Tell me a little about how that happened. Alan and I met at the Basie. We became close friends like most of the show staff are. It’s like a family working together at the theatre on the show nights. After a while, our friendship became more and we fell in love, introduced our kids and started our life.

What’s your favorite show that you’ve seen at the Basie? Hands down the best show I’ve ever seen was the 9-11 benefit concert. It was called the Alliance of Neighbors. A close 2nd for me would be The Cranberries, the vibe in the house was the coolest! Alan’s favorite show is The Annual Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes New Year’s Eve Show.

What show would you like to see at the Basie? We would love to see more country at the Basie! We love country music and go to a lot of concerts with our friends. Whenever there is a good country show at “work” we make sure we are both on the schedule.

The Count Basie Theatre thanks Dana for her service to the Basie! If you are interested in becoming a Count Basie Theatre Bartender and joining our talented team, please contact Izzy Sackowtiz at 732-224-8778 x 122.
