hen one of my editors WhatsApp’d me to say she had Jilly Cooper coming to dinner at her Cotswolds cottage (they’re neighbours), I felt a twinge of envy. I love Jilly and her huge horsey bonkbusters were a seminal part of my youthful reading. But while I may not be having drinks with the hero of equine literature, I have got up to speed on polo, tight white breeches and all. The fastest team ball game on earth is more popular internationally than you may imagine (it has huge viewing figures) and now its governing body, The Hurlingham Polo Association, is capturing the mood by launching a fashion and lifestyle brand with aspirations to be as big – or bigger – than a certain American brand whose roots are entrenched in the sport. Julia Robson gets the scoop on page 82. Now that we’re in the happy season of high jinx and holidays (August), we thought we would have some fun and peek into the world of superyachts, and super cars (which may one day all be electric). Whether you’re in the market for a luxury yacht (purchase or

charter) or not, you can’t help but be intrigued by these sleek, seafaring creatures. Rosalyn Wikeley brings us up to speed on all things superyacht on page 91, while Jeremy Taylor takes a drive in an electric motor Columbia Phaeton – an 15km per hour, early 20th-century precursor to today’s rather zippier models – which will soon become commonplace (p86). The Cotswolds have once more stolen the hearts of not only British celebrities, but royals too. Now that Harry and Meghan have joined David and Victoria Beckham with their own bolthole near Soho Farmhouse, Anna Tyzack examines nearby Kingham, in the heart of ‘Daylesfordshire’, where it will cost you a pretty premium if you yourselves want to join in the faux rural fun (p120). OT. I’M OBSESSED. Not that type, although hurray for giggly trips to legalised California! No – the terracotta tubs I’ve been scattering around the garden at The Magic Cottage. Inspired by @charlotte_annefidler’s instagram feed – her front door is smothered in pots filled with structural box, seasonal bulbs or flowering plants and herbs. Plus a secret ingredient: fairy lights for enchanted nights. You’d never feel sad going home. In my attempt at such riches, I’ve turned to Sarah Raven. Her ‘Bee and Butterfly Paradise’ mix is irresistible to both me and our much-loved pollinators. Next on my shopping list, Ampholia vases from Petersham Nurseries. This might not be the kind of pot you spark up… but it’s just as addictive. AH… THE BLISS OF IGNORANCE. UNTIL… along comes the folly of wisdom. For years, I’ve merrily weighed myself on a set of old-school bathroom scales. OK, so putting on my favourite jeans started to feel like
I’d swapped jobs with a sausage stuffer. But pah! The figure on the scales was the same, a nice sensible sum for my age and height. Until the other day, when I stood on my sister Florence’s scales. ‘Are they accurate?’ I yelped. ‘’Fraid so!’ she chirped. The horror. They’ve been underweighing me by ten pounds! Yes. TEN POUNDS! My food and cocktail intake has been ‘rearranged’. Avarice has been banished to the back of the line. And I’ve ordered brand spanking new scales. It was bliss... while it lasted. SEE ABOVE... and combine with summer holiday plans with most nubile friends and clothes being excess to requirements. Panic. Know the feeling? So I’ve gone kitchen sink on my cellulite. Which historic country house would you most like to snap up? Chewton Glen in Hampshire. I was lucky enough to stay in one of their tree houses a while back and it was magical.
What’s your favourite game to play? Heads Up. Portable fun and great for all ages.
What are Saturday afternoons made for? Who’s coming round for dinner and what are you cooking? Dougie and my brother are cooking a spicy curry because I am useless. My mum, Stephen Fry and Derren Brown are all coming.
Where do you go to escape the city? The beach – it has always been about the power of the ocean for me. We used to live in Hove and I would spend hours training and playing in the sea. What has been the most memorable night out you’ve had in London? My brother bought me tickets to see James Brown for my 21st at the Royal Albert Hall. It was an amazing night, made even more sentimental because it was one of his last concerts before he died.
Where was the last place you ‘discovered’? Mnemba Island in Tanzania. We were introduced to it by andBeyond on our honeymoon and it was paradise – we even helped some baby turtles take their first swim.
Best thing a cabbie has ever said to you? You look like someone famous – Billie Piper, but a fatter version!
Last film you saw? I am too busy to watch films generally but on the way to film Ski Sunday last year I watched Wonder Woman and loved it! A strong female lead, a love story and a bit of history thrown in.
What brings out the worst in you? Being hungry and tired – then my inner chimp comes out in a fierce way.
What would you do as mayor for the day? Introduce a three-day weekend with one day of organised sport including a session at London’s urban mountain Chel-Ski.
Where do you go when you don’t want anyone to get hold of you? Paddleboarding on the Thames. We

Which book would you take and song would you listen to on your
desert island? A French language book. I used to be fluent and want to get it back so this would be the perfect time. My song would be Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) by Baz Luhrmann; it’s very motivational and feel good.
What three items would you save from your burning house? Presuming my husband and baby are safe, a framed photograph of my mum (she passed away in 2006 so this is one of my most prized possessions), my hard drive with all my memories on it and my wedding dress.

Event dressing: We have the launch of our new store on Elizabeth Street. I will probably wear Beulah’s silk wrap Ratna dress as it’s so easy and feminine. Wardrobe failsafes: My Zara black leather jacket – it’s great in summer and winter, and goes with everything. Everyday uniform: I live in jeans and a T-shirt or cotton top in the office as that’s what I feel most comfortable in. If I have an important meeting then I just slip on a pair of heels and a silk blouse (although this is more of a rare sighting). Style crush: Lavinia, my business partner (below right), as she manages to make everything look super cool and effortless. I remember when I first met her, I loved the dress she was wearing and ran out to the shops to get one. Luckily, we have the same taste in clothes.

hose who think of Linley mainly as a purveyor of extraordinarily expensive bespoke furniture should think again. These days the Pimlico Road store is infinitely more userfriendly. There is a charming library-cum-lounge area, filled with inviting books to browse through, and a host of small accessories that make wonderful presents. Its interior design service, always an important part of its DNA, is going to be enriched by the addition of designers, Michael Keech and Graham Green. Both had worked at Ralph Lauren for many years developing its signature country house style, before starting their own design company, Keech Green in 2002, which Linley has just very recently bought. The talented duo will head up the creative and interior design side of the business and they share with Linley a love of glamour, elegance and an empathy with modernist architecture. Like Linley, they have worked on small domestic projects as well as grand Scottish castles, penthouses in Geneva and Mayfair, Tuscan villas and a clutch of superyachts.

What hasn’t changed is that the beautifully crafted bespoke furniture will always be an integral part of what it is about. Linley has been and always will be known for his intricate craftsmanship, for desks with secret drawers, for tables which extend beautifully, for marquetry and églomisé and other special effects. Polka dot These days, the shop jewellery box, £2,500 is such an established part of London’s retail scene that it is easy to forget that, when the then David Linley (now Lord Snowdon) first opened a shop on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1985, he was just 24 and freshly out of Parnham College design school. He brought to his business a passion for making, insisting always, very modestly, that it is as a ‘maker’ that he wishes to be known. He has always been a passionate lover of traditional craft skills and one of his aims is to keep nurturing craftsmen because, as he once put it to me, ‘there aren’t enough of them and this country needs them’. So all in all it’s worth a trip to London’s Pimlico Road to see just what the now 33-year-old store is up to. I think you’ll find it’s evolved, and is continually evolving nicely to meet the needs of the bright new millennial world in which we find ourselves.

On its 250th birthday, the Royal Academy’s summer exhibition preview was the biggest and best to date to reflect on this huge milestone. Celebrants, Imogen Poots and including Tracey James Norton Emin and Gabriella Wilde, washed down oysters with Fortnum & Mason champagne while enjoying music from London Brass Allstars and viewing the contemporary works on display. Founded in 1768, the summer exhibition raises funds for the Royal Academy Schools.

The Chelsea Gardener in all its bloom provided the perfect venue for the floral-themed Blossom & Rose cocktail party in aid of Casting for Recovery – a charity that provides fishing retreats for women whose lives have been affected by breast cancer. A
good interior designer has an eye, but Elicyon has a vision. A personal understanding of clients’ passions and style begins the bespoke journey on which Elicyon embarks to create, curate, collect and evolve interiors. The creation of bespoke collections for clients is increasingly requested of the Elicyon team who, in recent projects, assisted a client with selecting and curating one of the largest private crystal collections in the world, featuring Lalique and Baccarat. For another project, Elicyon worked with international publishers Assouline and Taschen to curate a collection of books reflective of the client’s interest in classic cars. From a private villa in Kuwait with subtle joinery elements that integrated the family monogram to lighting installations featuring rock crystal, artisan metal work and alabaster, Elicyon sets no limit on luxury. As much as Elicyon works in design, travelling to Basel, Paris and New York to buy art or Italy to choose marble for clients, they also excel

A recent project in Shanghai where the dining room features a bespoke chandelier and furniture and the bedroom (right) has a fitted headboard with upholstered panels and polished plaster sections on each side
in lifestyle curation. A creation can be beautiful, but it must also align with the client’s lifestyle: fridges are stocked with favourite delicacies, linen and tableware are assembled and bespoke cool cabinets are made to hold preferred champagnes. Be it unpacking belongings or dressing homes for Christmas and composing floral strategies for special occasions, a project never ends in the eyes of Elicyon. Founder and interior designer, Charu Gandhi, is involved in all Elicyon’s projects, sharing her functional approach to design that never misses an opportunity for drama and is plugged in to current trends. One trend she sees on the rise is the use of florals to complement interiors, in a similar capacity to fine art in homes. The use of natural materials and unusual artisan techniques, including timbers, textural fabrics and straw marquetry, are also likely to have influence. Playful trims and fringes, bringing a soft and light-hearted feel to pieces, are also championed by the Elicyon team, alongside a focus on transparency with exquisite sheer window dressings referencing Vogue’s trend for see-through handbags that reveal neatly curated interiors. ince its inaugural event in 1977, Cannes Yachting Festival has become the highlight of the luxury boating year. THE DEVIL’S HALF MILE Paddy Hirsch
Paddy Hirsch’s first novel is a gripping crime thriller set in New York City in 1799. It straddles the rough world of the docks where the rival immigrant groups fight for dominance and the supposedly more civilised world of Wall Street – the Devil’s Half Mile of the title – where greed and hypocrisy run riot. In both worlds casual violence is never far from the surface. The novel’s hero, Justice Flanagan, lawyer, amateur pathologist and detective, has a foot in both camps: he dresses well but carries a flick-knife. He had taken part in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, where he learned to defend himself and inflict pain with speed and precision but is also at home in the coffee houses and brokers’ clubs. His father had been ruined by financial speculation and fraud while his uncle, a slum landlord and racketeer, controlled the city’s waterfront and wharves. As Justice digs deeper into the story of his father’s death, he unearths a sleazy, violent world of slavery and prostitution. Hirsch creates a vivid portrait of New York at the end of the 18th century. It is a city of stark contrasts: the slums, the poverty and the degradation of the masses contrast with the stone houses, carriages and wealth of the upper classes. His descriptions of the crime, filth and stench of the city are reinforced by the slangy idiom and patois with which the characters speak. It’s a compelling story with strong characters and some scenes of extreme violence, convincingly (and wincingly) rendered. At the heart of the novel is financial chicanery, slavery, racism and hypocrisy: part of the plot revolves around an early example of a Ponzi scheme. Speculators, lured by big returns, are happy to turn a blind eye to the human misery off which they feed and the wider consequences of their actions. Silently, Hirsch invites his readers to consider the parallels between the mores of Wall Street in the 1790s and the 21st century. Corvus, £14.99
The Restless Sea is a historical romance, a tale of love and class, set during World War II against the unusual background of the Russian convoys. Charlie, an upper-class Fleet Air Arm pilot and Jack, an East End scallywag who joins the Merchant Navy to escape the law, compete for the affections of Olivia. The action sequences – as when Charlie’s squadron of Swordfish attack a German battleship – are well done and de Haan’s grasp of the history is sound. The characters can seem somewhat stereotyped, and the prose breathily overwritten in places, but overall it’s an enjoyable romp. Harper Collins, £14.99
ULTIMATUM Frank Gardner
Here is a pacy, enjoyable thriller which describes the kidnap in Iran of the British Foreign Secretary and the operation to rescue him. Frank Gardner, who has been the BBC’s Security Correspondent since 2002, tells the story with a verve and expertise born of long experience of the subject. The operational and governmental detail is convincingly authentic. It is the thriller writer’s trick to blur the boundary between current affairs and invention, to make the unthinkable thinkable and exciting. In this, Gardner succeeds triumphantly. The short, one-subject chapters and the taut prose keep the pages turning right to the end. Bantam Press, £12.99
KILLER INTENT Tony Kent
Tony Kent’s debut novel is a contemporary political thriller set in London and Ireland. The plot is exciting if perhaps a little far-fetched in places while the hero who, like the author is a barrister, seems on occasion to be imbued with superhuman powers. Some of the action scenes are shockingly, callously violent but brilliantly described. The book, although occasionally let down by the irritatingly staccato prose and its willingness to resort to cliché, is a fine achievement for a first novel. Kent, a well-known figure at the Old Bailey, has signed up with the publisher for another 13 novels so we shall be hearing more of him. Will history be rewritten when England play India at Edgbaston this August? Sebastian Coe thinks so
W
e have so much to thank our parents for. It was my mother who kindled my interest in cricket. Only a matter of weeks before my birth she attended all five days of a Test match. Her passion was no doubt sparked by her Indian father. She was a great patriot but, on one key choice, she failed the Norman Tebbit test. It was England for everything other than cricket. My spectator years really began when I moved to Sheffield. Bramall Lane was where I witnessed a series of muscular Yorkshire teams and, of course, Geoffrey Boycott in his pomp. At that stage of my cricketing education, I didn’t foresee marrying into a notable cricketing family. And here, I declare an interest – M.J.K. Smith, a former England cricket captain and arguably Warwickshire’s most successful skipper, is my father-in-law. My brother-in-law also captained his county and played for his country. Smith senior made his maiden Test century against India nearly 60 years ago. So, it is hardly surprising that I sought his views about England’s opening Test match against the current side this summer. It is also a landmark – England will be playing their thousandth Test match. History points to a home side win it; they have hosted India on six occasions at Edgbaston, winning five and drawing one. Smith turned back the clock: ‘When I first started playing Test cricket,

there was always an assumption that we would beat India, even though the country had gained a reputation as a difficult place to tour. Some of the senior players even declined the trip to the subcontinent. If India wins this time, it will be significantly less of a surprise than at any time in the last 40 or 50 years.’ This Indian side arrives awash with talent. Their star players have assumed a status that was unimaginable when MJK was plying his trade. They also come unquestionably at the top of the global heap. Under the captaincy of the charismatic Virat Kohli, whose team bat throughout the order, they are better placed to rewrite history than any touring Indian side before. While the debate rages in most cricketing nations about the impact the white ball has had on Test match cricket, it would appear that the Indian Premier League (IPL), which is Bollywood under floodlights, seems to have done nothing other than improve the quality of their Test teams. India’s last visit to Birmingham ended in a thumping innings and 242 run defeat but England’s recent form has been, at best, fragile. Root is a young captain and, given time to develop, will master the brief. Some, like Anderson, Broad and Cook, have the larger part of their careers behind them. All of them will have to be at the top of their game to derail their opponents. However it ends, you can be sure of one thing – there’ll certainly be no lack of atmosphere in one of Britain’s most diverse cities. On this occasion, like my mother, I am afraid I too will fail the Tebbit test.

James Bond always has a beautiful woman on his arm – I’ve fallen in love with his latest Aston Martin soft-top instead. When was the last time you saw something look this good on four wheels? The Volante – that’s Aston speak for a cabriolet – is a car that leaves you both shaken and stirred. It owns Kensington High Street like no other and offers 007 kudos wherever you drive it. Bond usually crashes his cars but this DB11 is so beautiful I just wanted to wrap it up in cotton wool. Top up, or top down, it looks gorgeous from every angle. The latest Aston sports car may be large but underneath that eight-layer fabric roof is a tiny cabin. While it is handcrafted to the max, a pint-sized Mini convertible offers more space. This successor to the DB9 uses dashboard equipment borrowed from Mercedes, although it’s well camouflaged behind the leather and lightweight composites that line the cockpit. Designers have kept a traditional feel but this is still the most futuristic Aston Martin ever built. Raising the roof to beat a rain shower in London takes 15 seconds when driving at speeds of up to 30mph. It’s quite a performance to watch and, unusually for a convertible, the DB11 still looks good roof up. Want to put your own mark on the DB11? A summer’s drive across the Mendips becomes an occasion in the DB11. Enthusiasts will tell you this latest version is the best driver’s car to date – and how right they are. Steering an older Aston wasn’t for the weak limbed. Just operating the clutch required the calf muscles of a rugby player. Now even the suspension has a range of settings to suit the road surface. GT is the softest, perfect for high-speed cruising. Sport+ unleashes the DB11’s wild side and transforms the car into something of a beast. A massive 503bhp requires nerve – you have been warned. Under that sleek bonnet is a turbocharged engine that emits a constant burble. If you need extra power there is a faster V12 version too. However, in the upper echelons of the performance car market, this V8 will be more than enough for most people. It is a fun and rewarding car to drive cross country. Unlike the coupé version, the Volante has the added bonus of a folding hood too. There’s an excellent sound system onboard but the music from the huge exhaust pipes was more than enough for me. There are few vehicles that will give you same experience as the DB11. The new Bentley Continental GT is one, or you might consider a Ferrari 488 Spider. LORD OF THE GAMES As The Game Fair celebrates its 60th birthday this year so too does its host, Ragley Hall’s ninth Marquess of Hertford. Here, he looks back at the estate whose fortunes have varied over the years
W
hen Henry Jocelyn Seymour, the ninth Marquess of Hertford, celebrated his 60th birthday on 6 July, the British peer was also marking two other notable 60th anniversaries. Ragley Hall, the Warwickshire stately home he inherited from his father in 1991, will have been open to the public for 60 years this summer, and the estate will be hosting one of his favourite events, The Game Fair, for its own 60th anniversary. For Lord Hertford, the remarkable coincidence has given him time for reflection as much as celebration. Here, he looks back on the history of his family’s estate, explains how it has changed and why it is the perfect place to be hosting the world’s biggest and best countryside festival.
Ragley Hall will have been open to the public for 60 years this summer. How much has it changed in that time? It was completed in the middle of the 18th century but didn’t open to the public until 1958. It is a Grade I listed property, so the building itself hasn’t changed much at all. If Robert Hooke, who designed the building in 1680, was to come up the drive today he would say, ‘Yes, that’s the house I built’. But you will notice quite a few Brazilian touches. My wife is now a naturalised UK citizen, but she was born in Brazil. She has added a few palm trees and a Brazilian flag, which stand out a bit. However, we have found that plants that grow well in Brazil do not do so well over here.
Who have been your most notable visitors to Ragley Hall over the years? What I have been surprised about is the number of people who visit Ragley. Not so much in disguise, but undeclared. Some people come under the radar just to get a feel for it and we don’t know they are here. Going back, the

most frequent royal visitor here was the Prince Regent, later to become King George IV, who is alleged to have had an affair with the wife of the second Marquess.
The State Rooms have been gradually restored to their former glory since 1958. What did that involve? A lot of work was needed. There was a huge gap between the death of the sixth Marquess in 1912 and my parents moving in in 1956. The house was unoccupied during that time. The sixth Marquess had virtually bankrupted the Ragley estate. He certainly disincentivised the next one, so the house was managed, or I should say mis-managed, by a bunch of lawyers and accountants. A lot of land was sold off, but the estate was big enough to be able to handle that. Because no one was really living in the house it decayed to such an extent that I believe that when my parents moved in in 1956 only three rooms were habitable. So an extensive renovation had to be carried out which lasted from 1956

This will be the fourth time that Ragley Hall has hosted The Game Fair. What is it about The Game Fair that makes it such an institution? It is important for these social events to be held. Working in the countryside nowadays can be a lonely business. The days when there were hundreds of farm workers are long gone. Now, on an average farm you’ve probably only got the farm owner and his family. And the same is probably true for country sports. The Game Fair is an excuse to get out, meet people and celebrate what we do. Community spirit is important, whether it is on a national level or a local level.
up until I inherited a fully restored house in 1990. Prior to my parents coming here it was not envisaged that anybody would ever live in this stately home again.
Generally, how do you strike that balance around the estate between being sensitive to Ragley’s heritage but making it sustainable for the future too? I’m always aware of the history. There has been a fundamental shift in the thinking that a family can occupy a large stately home without it being open to the public. Nowadays, the main focus is on the house being open in one form or another and the family cope with that. Generally, large stately homes like Ragley are reliant on the income they get from visitors who come to various events.
Obviously, the big topic at the moment is Brexit and what it will mean. The other ongoing subject is fieldsports and cruelty to animals, whether perceived or real. I think a lot of cruelty to animals is more perceived than real. Therefore, country sports advocates need to put over their case clearly and articulately. Which field sports do you enjoy? I’m now in a wheelchair, but hunting was my main winter sport. I didn’t shoot very often because I was generally on a horse. We do have a private family shoot on the estate and although neither my father or I shot very much, both my sons do, so it’s part of my life.

HORSE SENSE While certain global brands nod to equestrianism, polo’s official body, Hurlingham Polo Association, has gone and launched a fully-fledged fashion and lifestyle label and it’s taking the horsey world by storm, says JULIA ROBSON
R
icky France-Lynch was moody, macho and magnificent... he had a large crumbling estate and a nine-goal polo handicap... writes Jilly Cooper in her bestselling chick-lit book, Polo, the third (and raunchiest) of her Rutshire Chronicles, which first put equestrian fashion on the style radar back in the late 1980s. What began with Cooper’s Riders in 1985 – with its iconic cover of a male hand squeezing a pert female bottom – whet the appetite for an exposé into the glitzy lifestyles of polo folk, with their polished ponies, lean-bodied players and, of course, their expensive wardrobes. It ended with the compulsory wearing of (tight) white trousers, known as polo whites, both off and on the field, with Princess Diana and Elizabeth Hurley leading the charge. Once again polo fever is on the rise. This time it’s no longer considered just a rich man’s sport or even a sport for men only. Last November, 250 million people in 103 countries tuned

in to watch the Argentine Open, just one high-profile international event, compared with the 8.7 million viewers who watched the FA Cup Final on BBC1. The sport currently has 23,947 players worldwide across 90 countries and has a growing fanbase, particularly with women and students. During freshers’ week in 2017, 300 students signed up for university clubs. Some, like Regent’s University in London, even offer a polo scholarship. The idea of fusing polo – the sport and its runners and riders – and jet-setting groupies into a brand was not lost on American designer, Ralph Lauren, who built an empire and amassed a fortune from it. But now polo is coming home. No records exist on who invented the sport, however it is believed to have been first played in central Asia by tribesmen who used human skulls as a ball – the British tea planters in India, who were introduced to the game, are responsible for giving it a makeover and its iconic kit – notably the polo shirt, which has spawned a thousand copies. Although polo was subsequently exported to Argentina, Australia and the United States its spiritual home remains in the UK, where the official body, The Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA), resides. It was at its headquarters in Hounslow Heath (now Heathrow airport) that the rules for the game were first laid down in 1875. The decision to launch a brand born out of, and named after, Hurlingham, which still
oversees 38 of the 77 polo-playing countries from Azerbaijan to Gambia, is pertinent. The game is not the genteel Pimm’s and divotstomping as we know it. Serious injuries can occur to both horse and human as they hurtle at each other at speeds of 30mph on fields the length of six football pitches. It is still the fastest team ball game on the planet and the rules, which limit a match to six ‘chukkas’ of seven minutes, are there to stop the ponies from getting exhausted. Hurlingham Polo 1875, as the new polo fusion brand is called, may well be British born and bred but it has its sights set way beyond the horsey set. It hopes to muscle in on the activewear clothing market, forecasted to exceed $231.7bn by 2024, and in addition to polo whites, do for their newly launched equestrianised jod-jeggings and jod-jeans what yoga pants have done for Canadian brand Lululemon. This yoga-fusion brand ranks in the top ten global clothing retailers and has simultaneously catapulted sheer or partly-sheer yoga pants into high fashion and every woman’s wardrobe. ‘It’s fairly easy to build a business, but it’s hard to build a brand,’ says Simon Hawkins, CEO and founder of Hurlingham Polo 1875, who previously worked for Reebok and witnessed the first soft trainer designed and marketed for women roll off the production line in the 1980s. ‘But polo was already steeped

in history and heritage.’ Discovering old photos of Winston Churchill playing polo further convinced Hawkins the clothing of the sport had a story to tell – ‘and when you are creating a new brand having a story to tell is everything,’ he says, adding that, ‘if it were a person it would be a mix of Daniel Craig, Helen Mirren, Zara Tindall, Prince Harry, Victoria Pendleton and Eric Cantona’. Hawkins believes that few sports can fire the imagination quite like polo does. Thanks to the handicap system it’s also one of a very few that is played by both sexes and determined by handicap. Having an equally strong women’s range has seen Hurlingham Polo 1875 being well on the way to establishing a presence internationally since its soft launch four years ago. he rise and rise of the electric car market is going to change the way we get from A to B forever. Electric cars are lean, green and soon to be seen in every town and village across the country. Manufacturers around the world are locked in a race to build the most economical vehicle for every type of buyer. SUVs and urban runabouts top the list but even luxury saloons and sports cars are included in the electric revolution. Ignore the charge towards electric cars at your peril – opting for a diesel right now could seriously hit you in the purse. Their demise has been accelerated thanks to the Volkswagen emissions scandal known as ‘dieselgate’. Porsche has already stopped making diesels. Volvo,

Toyota, Fiat and most other manufacturers will soon follow suit. Britain will officially ban the sale of all petrol and diesel vehicles from 2040. New electric models are set to flood the market in 2018, with Nissan, Ford, BMW, Renault and Volkswagen leading the charge. You can read our thoughts on some of the best to the right but if it sounds like the future has finally arrived on the driveway, it’s worth remembering this isn’t the first time motorists have been magnetised by the power of electricity. A century ago, the first electric vehicles were essentially horseless carriages that didn’t require the driver to struggle with awkward gearsticks. Easy to operate, manufacturers blatantly targeted women customers who wouldn’t have to worry about the mechanics of a steam or motor car. Pope Manufacturing Company’s Christmas advert of 1904 proudly proclaimed: ‘There is absolutely nothing that you can give her for Christmas that will afford as much happiness, convenience, luxury and social prestige as a Pope Waverley Electric. Absolutely noiseless and odourless – they glide as smoothly and silently as the flight of a bird.’ Among the early pioneers in Britain was Consuelo Vanderbilt, an American heiress who put the celebrity into society weddings. In 1895, she married Charles Richard John Spencer-Churchill, the ninth Duke of Marlborough and the most eligible peer in the country. After moving in to Blenheim Palace, the new Duchess wasted no time in investing in a Columbia Phaeton electric carriage to explore the 12,000-acre Oxfordshire estate. Built in America by Pope, the two-seater cost $1,500 and would travel at about 15mph. It had an impressive range of 75 miles on one charge. It is said the Duchess bought the EV not because of the environmental benefits but because she didn’t like the noise of an engine. When the couple separated in 1906, the Phaeton disappeared and its whereabouts is now unknown. Today, the wheel has turned full circle as electric charging points are being installed at one entrance to Blenheim, with more planned in the main car park. Dominic Hare, CEO at the estate, explained: ‘We are considering a variety of electric options that aid the environment, including an electric car share scheme with people in neighbouring Woodstock.’ No doubt Consuelo would have approved. Range anxiety – it’s every EV owner’s nightmare. I got used to it but there’s always a calculation going on in my head comparing the distance to destination with miles left in the battery. The funky i3 it comes with the option of the Range Extender, a tiny, two-cylinder petrol engine that offers an extra 40-50 miles to get you home. Brilliant. If that sounds like cheating then save the extra £3,000 and go completely green because the latest 2018 model has plenty of power from the batteries alone. Some manufacturers are racing to bring out their first all-electric car. This is already the second-generation Leaf and it’s officially the world’s bestselling EV with 300,000 sales. Leaf has all the range most people will need for their daily commute, is relatively affordable to buy and comes absolutely loaded with standard equipment. However, not everybody will like the styling, and regular motorway drivers covering hundreds of miles should look elsewhere. I also found the seats strangely uncomfortable, whatever way I adjusted them, but I found it hard not to like the Leaf because it has been designed for first-time EV owners. Everything from the bonnet flap plug-in ports to the chic interior appeals.

RANGE ROVER PHEV VOGUE SE
Land Rover has offered a hybrid before but never a plug-in. This one has a tiny – by Range Rover standards – 2.0-litre petrol engine and a small electric motor. Remarkably, combine the two and this model performs as well as the diesel equivalent. Inside, it has the latest Land Rover doublescreen dash, which disposes of a rash of buttons but will require use of the manual. After a few hours, I found it all pretty straightforward. Off-road it’s still an unbeatable Range Rover. And in EV mode you can creep through the trees without any noise at all...

VW E-GOLF BEV
Understated, classy, Volkswagen’s all-electric Golf is just what you would expect it to be. Not as well-equipped as the Leaf, or as conspicuous as the BMW, the VW is a tried and trusted five-seater that has been around for decades. In fact, VW has deliberately kept the car as Golf-like as possible, with a familiar interior that won’t frighten away newbies to EVs. Quality of finish, practicality and space are exceptional. It’s not as zippy around town as the i3 but the ambience is a cut above the Nissan. On a country lane, it handles with Golf sure-footedness.

The REV project is a 182.6m luxury yacht currently under construction in Norway by Vard with a delivery date of 2020. INTO THE BLUE From the South Pole to Papua New Guinea, here are two offthe-beaten-track charter itineraries for well-heeled adventurers
Breaking the Ice

The path less travelled

I
n the past, travelling with four children has been prohibitively expensive, especially during the school holidays, but when my husband Danny announced that he was touring with his band around India during February half term, I decided to book a trip for just me and my 12-year- old daughter Betty. My eldest daughter [model Daisy Lowe] lives in London and is working hard and my two boys are quite grown up now and – in their own words – they ‘can’t be bothered to get on a flight’. I’ve never been that great at surviving the post-Christmas months, especially as North Somerset gets so damp and icy – our house starts resembling an igloo, so when Betty asked me if we could go back to Miami, it got me thinking... When I was Betty’s age, my dad bought a house on Miami Beach and we would spend every Christmas, Easter and summer there. Sadly my father died last year but Miami still holds fond childhood memories. My friend Indira had also recently moved to Turks and Caicos – to where you can fly direct from Miami – so this wouldmake the perfect two-pronged holiday.
The first stop in Miami was Soho Beach House with its 50s decor and beautiful ocean views, rooftop restaurant and plunge pool, 100-foot-long pool and beach (for members and hotel guests only), spa, library and gym. It’s a brilliant place to people watch, but beware the eager paparazzi who line the beachfront. Miami is a great destination for families with teenagers as there is so much to do. On rainy days you can shop at any number of malls and outlets, and the cinemas have all the latest releases. Wynwood is the new cool area with vintage shops and art exhibitions. Miami does have strict drinking laws though, which didn’t go down well last time with my 19-year-old son who couldn’t drink anywhere. But that didn’t stop Betty and I tucking into Greek and Turkish food on a lovely sunny patio underneath white umbrellas at The Mandolin Aegean Bistro, favoured by the Miami fashionista, and divine and absolutely scrumptious sushi at Pubbelly Sushi (they don’t take reservations).

We then flew to Turks and Caicos. The islands were badly affected by Hurricane Irma back in September 2017. My friend Indira and her family were evacuated into a gymnasium for two days and it was all quite terrifying for them, but arriving there now you would never know it. The island has revitalised quickly and speaking to a few of the locals, it is something they have grown to expect and they have a very quick recovery operation in place. We soon settled into our beautiful glass box villa at Amanyara – all wooden pine panelled walls with crisp white sheets, and an all-you-can-eat-and-drink mini bar – where the Beckhams spent New Year’s Eve. You can see why. It has its own private white sand beach, with a boat ready to take you out on aquatic excursions. Lunch – a fusion of Thai and Japanese – is served overlooking the beach and you can get an excellent aromatherapy massage overlooking a lake. That evening happened to be Valentine’s Day, and with Betty as my date, we dined outside under the stars on lobster, sipping virgin cocktails. When we got back to the room, there were red rose petals spread all over the bed, a sweet touch. The next morning Indira and her three sons, Charlie, Harry and Jesse, came to pick us up in their Jeep and take us to Thursday’s fish fry market where we listened to reggae, ate
(more) lobster and fries and bought little trinkets from the local stalls. We were also taken out on a boat by a company called Wake to Wake, owned by two young English boys, which cost around £600 for a half day. Betty impressed us with her wakeboarding skills and we crossed over to a very pretty island where the sand was a glistening white and the sea was seductively turquoise. For lunch we ate first-class vegan food at Retreat Kitchen. If this restaurant were in Somerset, I’d eat there every day. I had watermelon juice and a raw kale and walnut salad and a peanut and cacao cookie for a sweet ending. Guilt-free eating at its best. A little warning, February is busy on the island, it’s President’s Day (the third Monday of February), so it can be both tricky finding a room and super expensive when you do. In general, the island isn’t for people who are watching their pennies. Food has to be flown in, so when you buy anything from the supermarket, expect it to be three times the normal price, but luckily only having one child with me, Betty and I had an absolute blast and were very lucky that my boys just ‘couldn’t be bothered’. ■ BOOK IT: A stay at Amanyara costs from US$1,450 per pavilion per night including airport transfers, minibar (excluding spirits), all telephone calls, snorkel trips, group wellness classes and afternoon tea. orget no carbs before Marbs – in fact, forget everything you thought you knew about this beautiful Andalusian city. You can happily fill a weekend exploring its less well-known side with art, culture and excellent food. With views of both the sea and the mountains from almost every corner, Marbella enjoys 320 days of sunshine every year. While most visitors stick to Playa de la Fontanilla, for a quieter sun-soaked spot you will need to go a little further out. Head east to Playa de la Bajadilla next to the fishing port: still popular but smaller and less crowded, it backs on to the barrio de pescadores (the fishing quarter). After a day on the beach, avoid the tourists and instead explore the fishermen’s huts and unassuming tapas bars to feast on fresh seafood. Go in July for an art fix at the modern and contemporary art show, Art Marbella, a

three-year-old project which is gaining in reputation (marbellafair.com). Year round, the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engravings, including works by Picasso, who was born along the coast in Málaga, can be found in the mayor’s former home, a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance building. The sophisticated Amàre Marbella Hotel, where you should base yourself, has a discerning programme of rolling art exhibitions too. The maze of white-washed architecture and flowerfilled plazas in the historic Old Town can be confusing to navigate. But that’s the whole point – getting lost is the best way to explore the cobbled streets. Just make sure that one of your preambles finishes with a fino and churros at one of the many tavernas in the charming Plaza de los Naranjos, where the scent of orange blossom hangs thick in the air. Cities that are proud of their heritage may be two a penny, but ones that have successfully merged the past with the present and retained historic secrets beneath a glossy veneer are few and far between. Marbella is one such a place.

If you long for the summers of yesteryear, take a look at Île de Ré. Easily accessed via an arching bridge from west coast France, it’s a 30km slither renowned for salt marshes, sandy beaches and miles of cycle paths. Parisians see it as their Hamptons. Pack an appetite and sunblock but leave your sausage-skin cycling kit at home – this is no place for MAMILs (middle aged men in lycra). Villa Clarisse, with the reassuring stamp of Relais & Châteaux, has just nine suites and is one of the island’s most charming residences, an 18th-century mansion in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Interiors maestro Pierre-Yves Rochon had a hand in the design – spacious rooms in crème fraîche shades, ancient flagstones and shuttered windows, carefully edited furniture and touches of modern rattan. A small dining room caters for breakfast or eat in the garden where a sandpit and swimming pool keep little ones at bay. SAFFRON ROASTED PEPPERS Labneh – or strained yoghurt – is a beloved accompaniment in the Middle East and luckily enough it’s easy to make at home. INGREDIENTS SERVES 6-8 AS A SIDE
» 4 red peppers, halved and deseeded » Handful of small mixed tomatoes » Few sprigs of thyme » 1 tbsp harissa » 1 tsp salt » Large pinch of saffron threads » 2 cloves garlic, sliced » 4 tbsp olive oil, plus a glug for frying » 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar » 1 tbsp soft brown sugar » 400g tin chickpeas » 2 tbsp buckwheat » Small bunch of chopped coriander » Sea salt and pepper For the Labneh

METHOD
Line a deep bowl with a double layer of cheesecloth. Stir the yoghurt and salt together and place in the centre of the cloth and pull the corners to make a ball, tie closed tightly with string. Set in a sieve over a bowl to collect the liquid and let it hang while you get on with the rest of the recipe. Preheat the oven to 180°C and put the peppers and tomatoes on a lined baking tray. Scatter with thyme. In a bowl, mix the harissa, saffron, garlic, oil and balsamic vinegar and season well. Drizzle it over the vegetables, mixing in with your hands. Finally sprinkle the sugar over the top and roast in the oven for 45 minutes. Add the drained chickpeas and buckwheat with a good sprinkle of sea salt to a large frying pan and fry for 5 minutes until golden and crisp. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and add all the spices, nuts and chilli flakes. Sizzle for 3-5 mins until the spices have crisped. Remove from heat and set aside. When cool, peel the skins off the peppers and place the flesh in a mortar and pestle with the juices collected in the tray. Serve by dolloping the labneh onto a plate, spoon the peppers over, dot the tomatoes about, followed by the crisped chickpeas and buckwheat, then the spicy nuts. Finish with a scattering of chopped coriander.
Favourite ingredient that is in season now and how are you using it? Jemima: Borlotti beans. I love cooking them with plenty of woody herbs, garlic, onions and tomatoes. Lucy: Sugar snaps – straight from the garden or served with good olive oil and a little sea salt. When was the last time you sent something back to the kitchen and what was it? Lucy: I get so embarrassed but recently I had to send back raw tuna tacos from a Mexican in Soho as it was off and smelt of wet dog. Do you have any unusual rules in your kitchen? Lucy: I get very edgy when people use my Japanese knives. Least favourite ingredient? Jemima: Tinned corn, it gives me shudders! Who would you most like to take out for dinner and where to? Jemima: I’d take one of the biggest lovers of food and wine, the notorious King Henry VIII, to Brunswick House. Lucy: I’d go to our local pub with Michael McIntyre, Kate Hudson and Justin Timberlake.

What’s one way of converting a hardened city dweller to an idyllic bucolic existence? Bringing one of the world’s best sushi chefs to Leatherhead is a good place to start. Cue the bewildering contrast of a cutting-edge Japanese restaurant housed within one of Surrey’s great country estates, once home to Lord Beaverbrook, and now a swishy hotel. Taiji Maruyama’s restaurant is as lavish as befits its surroundings, but with a welcome dose of modern cool. Ceviche and taco starters, and mains from the Josper grill, are things of beauty. The Beaverbrook omakase features such wonders as melt-in-the-mouth unagi topped with foie gras and indulgent fatty toro with truffle that are nothing short of life changing. Banish all preconceptions you might have about Chinese food. We must be eternally grateful to Andrew Wong who toured his native country to bring us a rich culinary heritage spanning 2,000 years in the form of a concise 10-course menu. One Michelin star later, Wong has put haute Chinese cuisine back on the map, from perfectly executed classics such as his legendary dim sum, to an innovative interpretation of a ‘bird’s nest’ – traditionally made with swallow’s saliva, adapted for us by using crispy noodles instead. The comforting aspect of Chinese food still pervades, with lashings of umami and the inevitable dribbles of sauce on your fingers as you battle the garlic butter-stuffed crab claws. The snippets of history and anecdotes delivered with each course are a perfect accompaniment to Wong’s concept, which finally gives Chinese cuisine the justice it deserves. W
ith its village green and caramel-coloured houses, Kingham in Oxfordshire looks much like any other Cotswolds village – yet, unwittingly, it has become the most desirable address in the area. Here you find gastro pubs, artisan pizzerias and village houses costing more than £1.5m. ‘It’s become a destination where people aspire to live,’ explains David Henderson of Savills in Stowon-the-Wold. ‘The area around Kingham is the Hamptons of the West Country.’ Sir Anthony and Lady Bamford’s farm shop, Daylesford Organic, on their estate two miles away, certainly helped put Kingham on the map. Buyers now queue up to secure houses within the hallowed OX7 postcode surrounding the village, otherwise known as ‘Daylesfordshire’. But there are other more practical reasons why people are prepared to pay more to live in this part of the Cotswolds according to Henderson. Kingham is not just a pretty Cotswolds parish, it has a close-knit community and all the prerequisite ‘Ps’ of a great village: a post office, playground, pub, parson, primary school, petrol station and public transport. For those commuting into London, the railway station on the outskirts of the village, with trains to Paddington in 90 minutes, is a particular draw. ‘It is very accessible, so it ticks all the boxes for those
seeking the “perfect rural idyll”,’ explains Richard Trimbee, of property finders Coast & Counties (coastandcounties.com). Indeed, in 2006 it was voted England’s favourite village in a survey. ‘Everyone aspires to live in a village with an amazing pub and this one has two – The Kingham Plough and The Wild Rabbit,’ Henderson continues. ‘The primary school is one of the best in the area, and there are great private schools within easy reach.’ There is also now a further ‘P’ to raise Kingham’s stock – a private members’ club. Soho Farmhouse, known locally as ‘the farmhouse’, is a mere 25 minutes away, with bars, restaurants, a spa, gym and a children’s play barn complete with nannies – so much cachet does it have that the Beckhams and the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex have rural retreats close by. ‘It’s a great place for entertaining visitors at weekends,’ explains buying agent Adam Buxton of property finders Middleton Advisors (middletonadvisors.com). ‘Equally if you want to catch a film and a meal out during the week, to have this within striking distance has its benefits.’ Even before Soho Farmhouse arrived, Kingham was attracting a trendy, well-connected crowd – Alex James, Blur bassist-turned-cheesemaker, has a farm on the outskirts of the village, and the singer Lily Allen lives nearby. Now though, for those toying with the idea of a move out of London, it is even more appealing.

Chipping Norton is just four miles away, with a wider selection of shops and services, and Oxford, with high street brands and excellent schools, is a 50-minute drive. Kingham’s more urban demographic appreciates the glamorous yet laidback vibe found at pubs such as chef Emily Watkins’ awardwinning Kingham Plough, and The Wild Rabbit, opened by the Bamfords last year. Meanwhile, at Daylesford itself, they can enjoy pilates and yoga, cookery and floristry classes and a spa. Unsurprisingly, demand for family houses in and around Kingham far exceeds supply, particularly since the Bamfords began buying them up for holiday cottages. ‘I get buyers who refuse properties I show them on the grounds that they are too far from Daylesford,’ admits Henderson. ‘You pay a 10 per cent premium to live in Daylesfordshire.’ Many of the best properties change hands off-market, adds Buxton. So far, this summer, he has acquired substantial houses near Kingham for two of his clients: ‘When best in class homes come up for sale there is always fierce competition,’ he explains. The largest village houses in Kingham now sell for up to £2.5m, while a small farmhouse with a couple of paddocks nearby will cost around £2m and buyers can expect to pay between £4m and £6m for an exceptional manor or rectory. Of the smaller villages surrounding Kingham, Adlestrop, Cornwell and Bledington are the most desirable, although those with less to spend should look to the fringe postcodes of CV36 and GL54, which are a little further from Daylesford but cheaper, Henderson says. Will the allure of Daylesfordshire eventually dim? Buxton thinks not, simply because the fundamentals that first made the area popular have not changed. The novelty of Daylesford Organic wears off once buyers become part of the vibrant local community and start enjoying the surrounding countryside. ‘They find lesser-known pubs and the small tennis clubs in local villages,’ he explains. ‘And they realise the beauty of sitting on a hillside in the middle nowhere and enjoying the view.’ Whenever life becomes too rural, though, they can always retreat to the spa at Daylesford.
