MEDIEVAL EGYPTIAN EMBROIDERIES FROM THE ASHMOLEAN MUSEUM Alison Snepp The medieval period in Egypt was rich with sophisticated decoration. In her entertaining lecture Alison will introduce the superb Mamluk embroideries from the collection of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. While everyone marvels at the skill of the embroiderers, Alison will also provide an insight into the society and lives of the Mamluks.

THE TRAINING OF A PROFESSIONAL EMBROIDERESS Elizabeth Elvin The former principal of the Royal School of Needlework in the UK, Elizabeth will take you inside this iconic establishment to see how the staff and apprentices are trained in the art of hand embroidery. You will hear about special commissions and view examples of various techniques, including silk shading and goldwork.

PHOTOGRAPHIC PRESENTATION Andrew Dunbar, Margie Bauer, Fiona Fagan Come behind the scenes with Country Bumpkin photographer Andrew, stylist Fiona and 'imaginer' Margie. Andrew will present a short talk and demonstration on his award winning photography, sharing with you helpful hints on how you can take better photographs of your own beautiful creations.

THE GENIUS OF WILLIAM MORRIS Michele Hill Our very own Art Gallery of South Australia has one of the largest collections of original Morris works outside Britain.

Learn about this extraordinary man and see why he continues to inspire craftspeople and designers. This history and visual feast will show you how his designs have helped Michele create her magnificent quilts.

PROFESSIONAL BEADING FOR STAGE AND SCREEN Karen Torrisi Behind glamorous film sets and elaborate theatres are the buzzing workrooms, the places where the designers’ dreams are stitched into breathtaking reality. Karen, who has been beading professionally since 1994, will take you on an artisan’s journey into the costume beading process within the theatre and film industries.

Each forum will discuss a topic of importance to embroiderers and will be led by an expert in that field.

You will have the chance to express your views and hear those of others who have experience and/or an interest in the same area. The points arising from the forums will be collated and distributed to Convention participants later in the week.

If you have a particular point of view, we invite you to send us your thoughts beforehand to ensure they are included. Please send them to Margie at margie@countrybumpkin.com.au EMBROIDERY AND THE DIGITAL AGE Do you have fears about online shopping? Can e-classes, forums, etc replace the social interaction of embroidery groups? How does this technology impact on what we do - and on what we will be doing in ten years’ time?

EMBROIDERY AND HEALING We all know how therapeutic embroidery can be when we are unwell or grieving for a loved one. In this forum you are invited to share your experiences and hear from others who know the healing power of embroidery.

MAKING A LIVING FROM EMBROIDERY It sounds like heaven – doing what you love and being paid for it! But how does it work? What do you need to know to break into the market? This discussion will reveal the experiences of successful ‘embroidery entrepreneurs’.

KEEPING THE TRADITION ALIVE You are asked to share your ideas for passing on your skills and love of embroidery to the next generation in this forum. How do we inspire young ones who are exposed to so many other distractions? How can we encourage the teaching of embroidery in schools?

EXHIBITIONS

ROSES FROM THE HEART In conjunction with Thursday’s ceremony for Christina Henri’s Roses from the Heart project, thousands of embroidered bonnets will be on display.

If you have not already contributed a convict bonnet, you may like to make one for this event. For more information, see Inspirations issue 51.

ARTIST TRADING CARDS Following the story about this amazing embroidery craze in issue 56 of Inspirations, over 100 cards were sent to Country Bumpkin as part of a competition.

You can view these unique embroidered pieces during the week.

HEALING QUILT Some of our Inspirations readers accepted the invitation to embroider a square commemorating a lost family member to contribute to the Healing Quilt project. This remarkable quilt will be displayed until Wednesday, when it will be sold by means of a silent auction at the banquet.

The proceeds will benefit The Compassionate Friends. www.thecompassionatefriends.org.au FLOWER POWER QUILT This glorious quilt is made up of the entries in our Flower Power competition. As a tribute to the embroiderer’s favourite subject, flowers, it features a great variety of techniques. The quilt will be displayed until Wednesday, when it too will be sold by silent auction at the banquet.

The proceeds will benefit Spinal Muscular Atrophy Association of Australia Inc.

FRIENDSHIP TAPESTRY Originating in Iceland, the Friendship Tapestry is an ongoing international project of friendship without boundaries. Needleworkers from all over the world have contributed by making a small piece. All the pieces are tied together to symbolise an international net of friendship. Best of the Best Competition Make plans now to enter this exciting competition.

There will be one category for Inspirations and another for Australian Smocking & Embroidery. The main prize for each will be the full range of Au Ver à Soie stranded silks, worth $3,000.

Entries will be judged on artistic merit, technical excellence, colour and design, originality and suitability of technique and materials.

Judging will be conducted by three judges nominated by the ‘Best of the Best’ committee.

All decisions of the judges are final.

Winners will be announced at the Banquet on Wednesday evening.

SHOW AND SHARE

Show and Share A Display of Student Work This is not a competition, just an invitation to ‘show and share’ and be inspired by what your fellow needleworkers have created.

Registration forms will be available at the Registration desk on Saturday or they can be downloaded from the website beforehand.

Entry is free and you are invited to enter up to three items. Items must be clean and pressed.

Garments should be brought on hangers suitable for display.

Please deliver entries to the Registration desk no later than 4pm on Saturday 3 October.

They can be collected between 4pm and 5pm on Friday 9 October.

After judging is complete, entries will be displayed according to the space available.

Entering the competition implies permission for the article to be photographed for Inspirations or Australian Smocking & Embroidery and to be displayed on the Country Bumpkin website.

Please deliver entries to the Registration desk no later than 4pm on Saturday 3 October.

They can be collected between 4pm and 5pm on Friday 9 October.

Best of the Best Requirements 1. Each entry must be an original design and created by the person whose name appears on the entry form.

SELECTING

The class descriptions can be found on pages 8 - 37, listed according to the day of the class. Each description includes a class number, title, name of tutor, brief class description, level of skill required and kit cost.

The levels are to help you decide on the suitability of a class for you.

ALL – suitable for everyone and no previous experience in the technique is required.

INTERMEDIATE – suitable for those who already have some experience in the technique being taught.

METHOD OF PAYMENT 50% deposit is required upon booking, and the balance is to be paid by 21 August 2009.

You may pay by the following methods: Credit Card, Money Order, Cheque, or bank draft in Australian dollars.

Paying by instalments If paying by credit card we would like to offer you the opportunity to have the remaining 50% debited from your credit card on a monthly basis by Country Bumpkin.

ADVANCED – designed to extend the knowledge and technique of someone with experience.

Note that for some classes a sewing machine is required. Please advise us if you require us to provide one for you.

CLASS ALLOCATION Bookings received will be allocated on a first come first served basis. After your classes have been allocated, you will receive a letter of confirmation from Country Bumpkin. You will also receive a letter from each of your tutors informing you of any supplies required.

If a class does not fill, we reserve the right to cancel it.

For this reason, please fill in your second and third choices on the booking form.

FEES All classes will be limited to a maximum of twenty students to ensure you receive personalised attention.

All prices are in Australian dollars.

We want to be as fair and as considerate as possible, but the Convention requires major financial commitments and therefore our refund policy for classes is as follows: Should any of the classes receive an insufficient response, Country Bumpkin reserves the right to cancel the class. In this case you will be offered your alternative choice.

Cancellations Should you need to cancel, the following penalties will apply: From time of booking to 3 July – $20.

For cancellations received between 3 and 31 July – 30% of the tuition fees For cancellations received between 31 July and 14 September – 50% of the tuition fees.

For cancellations received after 14 September – sorry, no refund.

GENERAL INFORMATION All classes except the Teacher Training Workshop will be held at Unley High School. The classrooms will be signposted and a map of the campus will be given to you upon registration. There will always be a friendly face at the Registration desk to help you find your way if you need it.

Lunch boxes will be available each day that classes are held. You will be able to order these in the morning and they will be delivered to your classroom. (You will be given the lunch menu on registration day.)

Foxgloves and Dragonfly with Di van Niekerk

In the first part of this class you will be preparing the hoops and fabrics as Di describes the techniques she has developed for her book on ribbon embroidery and stumpwork. You will learn how to work ribbon stitches to create these beautiful flowers and how to manipulate wire to make the dragonfly’s detached organza wings.

Tropical Bird Two-sided Embroidery

with Tanja Berlin You will work the design using a single strand of Au Ver Ă Soie silk thread on a single piece of silk fabric so that the back is as well executed as the front.

Discover how to work reversible stitches in satin stitch, padded satin stitch, stem stitch and French knots on the tropical flower and satin stitch, stem stitch, fly stitch and sewing down spangles on the tropical bird. You will go home confident in the knowledge of how to transfer the design onto the fabric, how to work embroidery stitches so that they are reversible and a new confidence in your embroidery skills. This intimidating looking technique will be made easy for all those who venture to try this class - don't miss it!

Introduction to Goldwork with Elizabeth Elvin

'Daisy Bee' is an exciting piece of goldwork embroidered on off-white raw silk. Designed for the beginner to master the wonderful technique of goldwork, you'll observe the movement of the gold threads and feel the design growing with your fingers. Explore the very basic techniques of goldwork with this design, and have a lovely piece to take away with you.

Floral Embroidery for a Child’s Dress with Gail Doane

A simple mock wrap dress is the perfect palette for a full day embroidery lesson. The hand embroidery techniques covered include bullion knot, cast-on stitch, double cast-on stitch, blanket stitch and lazy daisy stitch. The white 100% cotton piqué dress features Swiss embroidered edging and micro check French bias binding at the neckline and sleeve edges. The last hour of the class we will discuss techniques required to complete the dress. The pattern, in sizes 3, 4, 5 & 6, will be available for use in class. In this class you will work on the finest white linen to make an elegant broderie anglaise sachet. Susan, who has extensive knowledge of whitework techniques, will show you how to perfect the stitches associated with this style of embroidery. This exotic miniature panel, worked on a background of silk in surface and raised embroidery, is inspired by a 16th century Turkish enamelled wall tile. Named after a Tuscan village, Casalguidi, this raised embroidery technique enjoyed a resurgence in the late 1800s to early 1900s as a cottage industry. Pinstuck pin pillows appeared in the 17th century and were given as gifts of friendship, during courtship and marriage or on the arrival of a child. Designs were stylised and typical of the embroideries of the period. The fine crewel stitches are embroidered with silks, metallics and fine wools on a cotton/linen blend fabric. Stitches used include ladder stitch, raised chain, interlaced chain, Hungarian braided chain, trellis stitch, Portuguese border as well as many others.

Jan has combined her teddy appliqué technique with raised embroidery to create her latest blanket. She will guide you through the construction of the appliqué bunnies and the transfer of the design onto the blanketing. A Traditional Partridge from Epirus with Alison Snepp

Greek embroidery has a rich and varied tradition, which will be introduced in this workshop. The Epirus area, northwest of Athens, has a characteristic form of embroidery that is counted thread, yet it has the appearance of raised surface stitchery.

Students will learn the technique while they work a panel based on the border of a sheet.

The embroidery is stitched on linen fabric with hand-dyed silk threads.

Fish in 43 Oriental Silk and Gold with Avril Ambrose de Havilland This elegant embroidery depicts two graceful golden Imperial Carp swimming in a tranquil pool beneath delicate foliage.

The design is based on traditional Japanese pen and ink drawings of carp and willow branches.

The highly padded fish are embroidered in hand-dyed silky threads in a variety of shades from flame to yellow, which are then overlayed with gold passing threads and netted gold to mimic scales. The heads of the carp are highlighted with beads, while the delicate fins and tails are made of pleated metallic gauze. The foliage is worked in a simple one stitch appliquĂŠ technique while the fish swim in the swirls and eddies of couched silver or gold threads.

In this class you will work a Blackwork Butterfly or Blackwork Chickadee or Blackwork Fuchsia.

Beginning by transferring the design onto the 32 count fabric, you will then learn how to work the blackwork embroidery from a selection of patterns.

The blackwork stitches are worked in back stitch or double running stitch following a stitch pattern and counting the threads of the fabric.

The blackwork butterflies also incorporate gold, silver and copper metal threads to outline areas of the embroidery.

You will go home understanding how to transfer a design onto the fabric and how to work the blackwork embroidery.

Plums and Honeysuckle with Susan O’Connor

The fruit and flowers in this glorious botanical study were favourites of the Elizabethan embroiderers. The heavy globes of the purple plums are worked in masses of French knots. Their perfect white flowers have detached petals and a centre of tufted ghiordes knots. Twining through the design are lustrous honeysuckle flowers, created with padded satin stitch. Of course, there is the obligatory insect, a bee, hovering in one corner. Working on silk broadcloth in beautiful silk threads, you will be learning from a modern master of these Elizabethan techniques.

Alison has collected envelope-style Indian purses for several years and is fascinated by the patterns and stitches used.

Students will have a choice of two designs. One uses colourful threads and lining and the other uses indigo-coloured lining and a number of blue shades for the embroidery. The surface embroidery is worked with Danish Flower Thread and includes touches of silver metal threads and mirrors.

Beth Allen (AUSTRALIA) With a mother who was a great inspiration to her, Beth says she has been doing some form of handwork all her life. In particular, she likes making little things that will bring a smile to the face. She lives in country New South Wales with a most supportive husband and a helpful German Shepherd. Beth claims to have lots of ideas it is just a matter of translating them into reality.

Avril Ambrose de Havilland (AUSTRALIA)

Although she originally trained as a pharmacist, Avril’s embroidery hobby soon took over and she has accumulated extensive experience as an embroiderer and teacher. Born in Australia, she gained qualifications at the Royal School of Needlework, the London College of Fashion and the City and Guilds of London Institute. Now closely involved with the Embroiderers’ Guild of New South Wales, she is the writer, coordinator and assessor of the correspondence course in Goldwork Embroidery.

Sue Barrows (AUSTRALIA) As a teenager, Sue sewed her own clothes under her mother’s direction. Once she had daughters of her own, of course she wanted to smock. Sue is now a member of the Smocking Arts Guild of America, teaches various forms of embroidery and her designs have been published in several needlework magazines, including Australian Smocking & Embroidery.

Tanja Berlin (CANADA) Tanja is a graduate and former staff member of the Royal School of Needlework. At the school she became an expert in various techniques of embroidery as they applied to restoration, conservation and commission projects. Now living in Calgary, Canada, she teaches widely and maintains a website of her embroidery kits and designs. She has had numerous embroidery projects published in Country Bumpkin publications.

Gail Doane (UNITED STATES) Gail was born and raised in Canada and now lives just outside Salt Lake City, Utah. Mostly self-taught, she is detail oriented but prepared to ‘break the rules’. A self-described heirloom sewing addict, Gail brings to the classroom 30 years of experience, having dressed seven children, and now an ever-expanding number of grandchildren, in beautiful heirloom clothing. Her work first appeared in Australian Smocking & Embroidery in 2000 and Inspirations in 2008.

Angela Dower (AUSTRALIA) Angela says she has always loved painting, drawing and designing – using threads as if they were her paints is simply an extension of this. She has taught art and craft and worked in advertising for a major Melbourne newspaper. Now living in Geelong, she teaches at home. Angela has contributed projects to Inspirations, A-Z of Embroidered Flowers and A-Z of Ribbon Embroidery.

Based in Adelaide, Christine is an experienced embroidery tutor, author of books and articles, judge, assessor and lecturer. Elizabeth is a specialist in goldwork, silkwork and ecclesiastical embroidery. She began her training at the Royal School of Needlework in 1961, where she became Head of the Studio (then known as the Workroom), and later Principal for 18 years. She has overseen many important commissions, taught and lectured throughout the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States and Australia.

Helen Eriksson (AUSTRALIA) Helen has owned her own embroidery business for some years, holding classes in her home, as well as interstate and overseas.

Her work has been featured in numerous embroidery magazines, including Inspirations, and she has written a book, ‘Ribbon Renaissance, Artistry in Silk’. Helen has developed her own style and technique so that her work can be instantly recognised.

Jan Kerton (AUSTRALIA) In 1988 Jan gave up work as a Speech Pathologist to teach smocking, heirloom sewing and embroidery and opened her shop 'Windflower Smocking'. In 1996 she moved the focus of her business to mail order.

This allowed her to specialise in the design of a delightful range of wool embroidered blankets with her unique appliqué technique. Jan continues to develop new kits, and run her web business.

Julie Graue (AUSTRALIA) Julie has been interested in embroidery and smocking for as long as she can remember and hardly a day passes that she doesn’t pick up a needle and thread. She began contributing to Australian Smocking & Embroidery and Inspirations twelve years ago and before long was asked to tutor for Country Bumpkin, teaching both smocking and embroidery. She has now moved to Queensland where she teaches from her home.

Lizzie Kulinski (AUSTRALIA) Lizzie’s love for beautiful dolls started over twenty years ago and more recently she has discovered the art of ‘reborning’ life-like baby dolls. She now teaches reborning and has won ribbons, rosettes and medallions at doll shows. Deciding that these dolls needed their own range of clothing, Lizzie put her smocking and embroidery skills to work. An editorial assistant for Country Bumpkin Publications, Lizzie also stitches the step-by-steps for our magazines and books.

Michele Hill (AUSTRALIA) Michele is a part-time registered nurse, continuing to practise this profession to ‘feed her obsession’.

She discovered quilting in 1986 and has been addicted ever since.

Appliqué is her speciality, particularly designing quilts with William Morris as her inspiration, and she has won many awards for her work. As a member of the Quilters Guild of South Australia, she has served on several committees and enjoys being involved with exhibitions.

Monique Johnston (AUSTRALIA) French born Monique emigrated to Australia during her teenage years.

She has been fascinated with needlework all her life, aquiring an appreciation of fine embroideries and rich tapestries while visiting French castles during her childhood. Embroidery and smocking became a passion when her third child was born.

Monique has been a member of the Country Bumpkin team for the last fifteen years.

Margaret Light (AUSTRALIA) Margaret worked in the retail embroidery industry for many years. She received accreditation as a tutor from the New South Wales Embroiderers’ Guild in 2007 and has taught throughout Australia and New Zealand.

She is working towards an Advanced Certificate in Research and Embroidery with the South Australian Embroiderers’ Guild. Interested in the history and evolution of design and embroidery techniques, she specialises in crewel work.

Deborah Love (AUSTRALIA) After completing the Introduction to Embroidery course with the Queensland Guild, Deborah found that it was the diversity offered by whitework which appealed to her most. This led to researching Mountmellick embroidery in Ireland and the creation of works which have been purchased by the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Guild.

Mountmellick and Deerfield embroidery remain her favourites. A qualified teacher, Deborah is head of tutors at the Queensland Embroiderers’ Guild.

Peta McMillan (NEW ZEALAND) In 1991 Peta first came across a piece of Snutki embroidery and she has been obsessed with it ever since.

She now produces kits and teaches Snutki as well as Kalocsa, Hardanger and other whitework techniques at guilds throughout New Zealand. Apart from producing two self-published books on Snutki, Peta has had her work published in magazines in Australia, the United States and Britain.

Jenny McWhinney (AUSTRALIA)

Jenny’s ability to embroider creatures of all sorts with her distinctive form of thread painting has made her a favourite with Inspirations readers. An artist at heart, she studies the characteristics of mice and rabbits, camels and tigers, and sets about reproducing them with her threads. She firmly believes that everyone can embroider her designs and has a naturally encouraging teaching style.

Jane Nicholas OAM (AUSTRALIA)

Jane has written five books on stumpwork and gold embroidery and has contributed widely to journals and magazines. Jane was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to further her studies in stumpwork in the United Kingdom and in 2005 was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for her ‘services to hand embroidery as an artist, teacher and author’. She teaches in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada.

Susan O’Connor (AUSTRALIA) Susan is a long-time member of the Country Bumpkin team, having an editorial role for both Australian Smocking & Embroidery and Inspirations. Her exquisite creations regularly appear in both publications and she has used her extensive knowledge of whitework in her book Monograms – the art of embroidered letters.

Elizabethan embroidery, with its distinctive stumpwork and thread painting, is another of her areas of expertise. Susan travels to the United States, United Kingdom and France as a teacher for Country Bumpkin.

Carolyn Pearce (AUSTRALIA) Carolyn is an accredited tutor in Surface Embroidery with the Embroiderers’ Guild of NSW. At their 50th anniversary Festival of Embroidery she was awarded overall winner for her Doll House Workbox.

Carolyn has been a regular contributor to Inspirations for fifteen years. She is the designer of The Village Bag and The Embroidered Patchwork Bear, both of which feature her love of unusual stitches and intricate embellishments.

Kris Richards (AUSTRALIA) After Kris began embroidering she developed a great passion (almost an obsession) for bullion roses.

They have now become her signature style of embroidery and are included in most of her designs, stitched in her distinctive palette of subtle shades. A regular contributor to Inspirations and Australian Smocking & Embroidery magazines as well as many other Country Bumpkin publications, Kris has worked in the kits department of Country Bumpkin for fifteen years.

Alison Snepp (AUSTRALIA) Alison Snepp has been a freelance embroiderer since 1981. She has lectured and taught classes around Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and has published numerous articles and several books. With a particular interest in embroidery from different cultures, such as Indian, Greek and Uzbek, she has accumulated fascinating collections and enjoys sharing this interest.

Karen Torrisi (AUSTRALIA) Karen received a Queens Trust Grant for Young Achievers to study Haute Couture Beading and Embroidery in Paris in 1999.

Her creations are internationally known and include commissioned work on gowns worn by many celebrities and she has also worked on commissions for stage shows. She is the author of the book ‘The Art of Making Hand Beaded Bags’ and now beads exclusively for selected designers and costumiers.

Heather Sterling (AUSTRALIA) Heather discovered Japanese embroidery fourteen years ago at the South Australian Embroiderers’ Guild and was so inspired that she travelled to the Japanese Embroidery Centre in Atlanta to become an accredited tutor. Later she became a qualified Japanese Beading teacher. Heather is passionate about Japanese Embroidery, and the silk and gold work designs taken from the kimono. She has her own business teaching at home and interstate.

Di van Niekerk

Louise Spriggs (AUSTRALIA) Although she originally trained as a graphic designer, Louise now spends her time embroidering.

She enjoys teaching a wide range of embroidery techniques, including beading, stumpwork, ribbon and bullion embroidery. She is a regular tutor at Country Bumpkin which she finds very rewarding.

A keen smocker as well, she has had projects published in Australian Smocking & Embroidery.

Yvette Stanton (AUSTRALIA) Yvette is an accredited tutor with the Embroiderers’ Guild of New South Wales. Her particular interest is whitework embroidery and she loves sharing it with others. She has written ‘Elegant Hardanger Embroidery’, ‘Merezhka’ and ‘Mountmellick Embroidery: Inspired

by Nature’, and has her own business, Vetty Creations.

She regularly contributes to Inspirations magazines and books.

Born in Pretoria, Di grew up in an artistic home where, from an early age, she was involved with many crafts. While her own children were small, she started teaching quilting and patchwork from home. She now owns two shops in Cape Town, has written several popular books, produced DVDs and developed a range of kits based on her technique for embroidering designs printed on fabric.

Lyn Weeks (AUSTRALIA) Over the past 30 years Lyn has designed and stitched hand embellished baby clothes commercially, changing her focus to teaching in 1990.

Lyn has participated in the activities of several smocking and embroidery guilds, published articles in Australia and the United States, designed a range of garment patterns and published a fine machine sewing manual. Throughout these years she has always enjoyed studying with other teachers.

Jenny Brown (AUSTRALIA) Having trained as a Home Economics teacher, Jenny also has a Design Degree in Illustration.

She finds her drawing skills help her greatly in designing embroidery projects. She has taught both adult and children's classes at Country Bumpkin and has contributed to Inspirations.
