Dear Readers, Everyone here working on The Voice magazine would like to thank you for reading our very first issue! The Voice itself first began not as a Magazine, but as a newspaper in 2011. Our team was small, and the work was difficult, but we managed to finish almost 8 issues over the course of 2011 – 2012 school year. This year, our team is much bigger! It encompasses almost all the departments in our school: IFY, DP, A-LEVEL, Bilingual Section Junior and senior; Kindergarten, MYP and PYP with both students and teachers writing articles. This magazine is a tribute to the English language, western culture and Country Garden School! We are very proud to be a part of it and we hope you enjoy reading our work! Thank you so much,

The School FOUNDED IN 1994, OVER 4000 STUDENTS 33 HECTARES. WOAH.

Words from the Founder The most valuable investment is in the children’s education. As an old Chinese adage goes, “A great wealth in one’s family is not as valuable as a slight skill in one’s hand.” Money will be

used up some day, but abilities may enable someone to create an unlimited amount of wealth for lifelong enjoyment. Another Chinese proverb says, “A family’s wealth seldom continues beyond three generations.” Today, I would take the courage to offer my advice to the successful people: “Success in one’s career alone is not enough. Besides your career achievement, your children must be promising and well mannered. Only in this way can the joys of your family life have substantive meaning. In addition, as head of a household, you can enjoy a peaceful and carefree mind only after you have raised your children who have a sound physical health; a noble determination, and brilliant wisdom to carry forward your career. The realization of all these will be impossible without receiving a quality education.

International Vision A co-ed boarding school for K-12, our students become critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong learners and informed participants in local and world affairs. Our curriculum encourages students to be caring, enquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, principled, communicators, risk-takers, open-minded, well-balanced and reflective.

Frightful fun

Students traveled to booths from all over the world: France, Greece, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, and the USA.

The day kicked off with each class showing off their dancing skills, performing dances from different countries.

A game for every country. Russia had Matryoshkas, a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other.

An active lifestyle makes for a healthy body. A fun sports day took place for all the students and their parents in late October.

Children attended a festive Halloween party, filled with frightful ghosts and ghouls. And, of course, costumes and candy!

WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL KINDERGARTEN OF GDCGS? PYP inquiry program is carried out on the base of the six transdisciplinary themes, which are suitable to be explored by all age levels. The themes are who we are, where we are in place and time, how we express ourselves, how the world works, how we organize ourselves, and sharing the planet. Each grade level studies 4 units of inquiry which explore the six transdisciplinary themes. The essential elements at the center of the curriculum model and the individual subject knowledge are developed and applied through these themes.

Etiquette performance On October 9, etiquette took center stage. Seven teams of kindergarten teachers performed a skit for the children. Each perfomance was an important lesson teaching manners and customs. The international team of teachers showed how to deal with a group of proud and unruly children. Teachers cultivate civilized and polite children, and provide the groundwork for the child’s life.

MID-AUTUM FESTIVAL: KOREAN THANKSGIVING DAY In Korea, Mid-Autumn festival is also known as Thanksgiving Day. The local name for the event is “Chusok”. Chusok is on the 5th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. There is no agreed opinion on the origin of Chusok, but there are two popular stories. One is from weaving contest between two teams. The team that had woven the most cloth would win and would be treated to a feast by the losing team.

ESSAY WHAT MAKES AN ATHLETE? Some believe that a great athlete is born, others believe it is determination and hard work that make the difference. What do you think? Write an opinion essay about this question. Start by preparing a brainstorming list: 1. What physical skills does a person need to be successful at sports? Coordination is one. Strength is another. List a few other physical skills.

WHAT IS MYP? MYP is divided into Junior Secondary School Stage (including six hundred seventy-eighth grade) and MYP high school period (including ninety-level). It requires subject knowledge, learning methods, and a high standard of English. The curriculum lays a solid foundation for students admitted to DP, and A-LEVEL IFY International Foundation and prepares students to get admitted to prestigious universities around the world.

2. What mental skills are needed to be successful at sports? Willpower is one. Not giving up is another. Can you add more?

3. Can you think of any athletic skills that a person is born with?

4. What athletic skills can a person acquire?

5. Cirlce the statement that matches your opinion: a. Good athletes are born that way b. Hard work + willpower = success in sports c. Both natural ability and hard work are important

The Sports Festival Last week our school held a Sports Festival. I joined in three sports events. When the Sports Festival began on the first day, all the students of BGY School were on the playground. Some of them were competing in the matches. Some of them were watching, shouting and cheering. My friends Lily and Zhen Jianling competed in the 100- meter race. When they were running, I was a little worried. Because I saw Lily run more slowly than Zhen Jianling. When the race finished, Lily didn’t win the first place, but I still thought she was great. At about 10:30, it was my turn to run in the 60- meter race. After the race started, I tried my best to catch up with others, but I just ranked No.2 in the end. My classmates encouraged me , gave me a warm hug and passed me water . I felt very moved. Plus making a decision based on final outcome does not always indicate if the game was close. A good example was the recent Oregon vs. Arizona State game. Oregon showcased its strength, speed and agility and were up 43-7 by halftime. The coach pulled the starters and played third stringers in the second half. Final score ended up being 43-24 due to the

Due to financial obligations from outside sources we will never be able to truly develop a ranking system that can take all the variables into account. Once you finish tuning the 2nd bolt directly opposite the first; you can go and begin turning the bolt directly opposite that one. Continue until you have tuned the whole drum. The drum head itself should not be so tight that the drum key is difficult to turn. Nor should the head sound as though it may break. A good tuned drum will still be stretchable after you finish tuning.

I have been successfully coaching and teaching golf for the last 16 years. Rather than give you a lesson on paper, I want to discuss a controversial topic in the game of golf. I had a colleague that shall remain nameless, make this comment to me the other day: “Golf isn’t really a sport, it is more like a leisure game for rich people.” Here is my rebuttle to that statement.

The

Temptation of Food

Fo o d i s d e l i c i o u s . It gives us energy, gives us pleasure and joy. We can enjoy food in any place at any time. The music in a café can help

you relax; people love to enjoy coffee there. When anyone is sad, sweets can make a person happy and feel better.

Written by Jenny 8EE

Everyone has their own interest and tastes, so there are different kinds of food, dessert, drinks, snacks and delicacies. There is always a kind of food that you cannot refuse and love it.

The comparison of traditional foods: China and the U.S.A China has a long history of culture including eating and food. We usually eat things steamed or cooked. There is a traditional food called “the dumpling”. It was a medicinal invention and it has a history of over 1800 years. They are based on flour and may include meat, fish and vegetables inside. Dumplings taste very delicious and very healthy. Another Chinese traditional food is called “MapoToufu”. It tastes spicy and hot. “I enjoy Chinese traditional foods because they have a variety of different flavors and many kinds of food.”My teacher Mr. Kevin said, “ In Canada, we could call Chinese foods “Ethnic foods, Because the food is specific in China”. Every country has its own kinds of food.” In the Western hemisphere, diets are completely different than in China. Hattie from grade eight said, “My favorite food is pizza, I like pepperoni the best. In the United States, we don’t usually eat veggies, steamed or cooked. Instead we eat salad which is raw veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumber and broccoli. Then we eat the salad with a sauce called “dressing”. Pancakes and Waffles are eaten for breakfast. They are kind of like bread, only sweeter and you eat them when they’re hot. You usually put maple syrup or powdered sugar on them. In the United States we drink a lot of milk. We have chocolate, strawberry and so on.” It’s hard to compare Chinese and Western cuisine because there are so many types. Both are perfect in their own ways.

Why do we enjoy food? A long time ago, we ate because we needed to eat. Gradually we were not nearly as desperate to fill the stomach so we began to enjoy the food we desired. The discovery of coffee beans brought us coffee which makes us clear our minds also known as being in a good mood. The discovery of flour brings us delicious cakes. We enjoy food because of taste, shape, value and the mood it puts you in. Sweet foods make you feel happy and healthy, like white chocolate, it tastes like love. Bitter foods can ,make a person feel awake and calm, for example coffee, especially espresso. All foods have a unique quality, so enjoy your favorite food because chances are it will overcome you with happiness.

D: I used to think of it. But at that

time I was afraid to tell my parents. I think this is a pity for many Chinese teenagers because their talents cannot be well developed. Many teenagers have to give up their dreams because they cannot get their parents’ understanding and support.

W: This year, thanks for the help of

the volunteer club, they did a good job. With the help of these volunteers, the sports festival is wonderful.

J: As a student leader, how do you

evaluate this year’s sports festival?

W: The sports festival gives

the chance for students to train themselves. It helps to increase students’ team spirit and the honor of collectivism. Unfortunately, some students get injured in the competition. I think the only thing that needs to be improved is, we don’t have enough volunteers around the track, causing too many students go across the track randomly. Overall, the 8th sports festival is successful and brilliant!

J: Can you evaluate the volunteer club? D: The volunteer from our club are responsible and active. Although the sun is so bright, they keep on working. But sometimes the work allocation is massive. The work is not as effective as we thought because the time for allocation is not enough. Also, we don’t have enough volunteers.

Do we really

need 26

art?

In 1768, my old art school, the Royal Academy of Arts, was opened by Sir Joshua Reynolds and Sir William Chambers. Their task was to create an institution that elevated the role of the arts:

painting,

drawing, sculpture and architecture within society and to bring in a new era of professionalism that had hitherto been neglected in British culture. The model for this development had been the Italian and French academies, which had opened and had been operating most successfully since 1593 and 1648 respectively. Britain was changing rapidly, its empire was expanding year on year, it was leading the world in the industrial revolution, people were becoming wealthier, but it was felt that in the arts, we were lagging behind. Fast forward nearly 250 years and we find China undergoing a similarly radical transformation, perhaps more so, the major difference being, of course, is that its own culture has not floundered as its 5,000-year history continues to flourish into the twenty-first century. New and fascinating art areas are springing up and developing all the time: 798 in Beijing, M50 in Shanghai and Redtory and Xiao Zhou artists’ village here in Guangzhou; the Academy of fine art in Beijing receives a staggering one million applications a year for just one thousand places. Yet to some people, Art is still seen as secondary or even tertiary subject, a hobby at best, not a meaningful pursuit nor one with any financial value. If you want to be mercenary about it and only think of art in fiscal terms, then consider the millions generated at auction and by so-called block-buster exhibitions that have the public queuing up in their hundreds and thousands in Europe’s capitals. Monet still makes the mon-ey. And let’s not restrict ourselves to the fine arts; Britain no longer leads the world industrially, but in the applied arts and other creative industries: fashion, textiles, ceramics, product design, graphic design, animation and film making we are world beaters; nearly all the people working in these fields have had an art education and their journeys all began in school art rooms. All of this has reminded me of one of my old teachers from the Academy, who was once interviewed about his ideas and feelings on art, and which he responded with eloquent simplicity that without

it,

‘life

would

be

barren

and

undistinguished’. Art

is for the moments of quiet repose and contemplation, it gives us continuity with the past, and should we dare to neglect it today, we will deny future generations the gold of time.

I 'ts very rewarding ! Yes, working the mediaindustry is the most rewarding job I have ever done besides being a teacher. The first time I ever completed work on my own film or musical album and saw it play in front of people was overwhelming. Watching the idea I had in my head develop and then come to life on screen was an experience that is just indescribable. So much work goes into a project, but once you have that experience and finish the work; you will definitely be proud of yourself. It causes you to really want to continue making movies.

Unfortunately, I am going to suggest that doing a Media BA is not such a good idea. There are plenty of workshops you can do in your spare time that can teach you just as much as you would learn on a BA course (yes, it’s true.) If you’re going to college; you should do a degree that has more value for you and your future. There are several times in your filmmaking career that you just won’t have work. Film-making is not a steady career. Work comes and goes and you will need to work at a steady job to pay your bills. Remember, if you have a good degree; in times of trouble—you can fall back on it. THANKSGIVING DAY is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closet to the day it is celebrated. Several other places around the world observe similar celebrations. Historically, Thanksgiving had roots in religious and cultural tradition. Today, Thanksgiving is primarily celebrated as a secular holiday. In Canada, the origin of the first Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to the explorer Martin Frobisher who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean. Frobisher’s Thanksgiving celebration was not for harvest but was in thanks for surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms and icebergs. In 1578, on his third and final voyage to these regions, Frobisher held a formal ceremony in Frobisher Bay in Baffin Island (present-day Nunavut) to celebrate the event. Years later, the tradition of a feast would continue as more settlers began to arrive in the Canadian colonies. Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by federal legislation in 1941, has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States. Historically, Thanksgiving began as a tradition of celebrating the harvest of the year. In 1620, the pilgrims sailed to America on the may flower, but only around 50 people survived the first winter. Over half of them died of starvation and epidemics. Luckily Native Americans assisted them and taught them how to fish, farm and hunt. They eventually decided that a day of thanksgiving would be a great way to celebrate their harvest. They gathered together with the Native Americans, they used apples, organs, chestnuts, walnuts, grapes and big roast turkeys. Roast Turkey is a really traditional dish. It is always eaten on Thanksgiving and cooked with many different herbs and spices. Before families cook a turkey, they usually need to put some bread beside the turkey to absorb the tasty sauce that comes out while it cooks. By Gigi Chen 8EE
