February 2013

An old-fashioned love story in a modern era life of getting married. As far as I was concerned life was more than getting married, plus some bad experiences with guys who claimed to be something they weren’t, made me shy away from the whole marriage thing. I was happy with my life, working at Bumble Bee Floral, and the independence to do whatever I wanted. As you can imagine, as a single girl in Baker, I had a lot of match-making to put up with!” Raised in a family where faith in God was something lived out every day in every aspect of life, not just something done on Sundays, left Sarah with high standards and high expectations. Sarah elaborated, “I had always kept my ideals very high, to the point that when I was a teenager, I made out a list of what qualifications I wanted my future husband to have. I had a lot of pressure from people to lower my ideals. You’ll never find anyone like that, was the most common thing I heard, or a good girl can change a bad guy - I always laughed at that one! It never works that way. I was content to stay single the rest of my life, if that was what God wanted, and I was determined that I would never lower my ideals. Fast forwarding to 2009, Sarah explains her state of mind (and heart) when she and the Waterlands encounter one another for a second time. “That Sunday in 2009 when Duane and Dianne Waterland came back to our church was not a good Sunday for me. I had just refused a young man from a different state who wanted to start dating me. It was someone my family knew very well, and they were all upset at me for refusing him. He was a very nice Christian guy, but there just wasn’t a ‘spark’ there for me,” Sarah wrote. “I was starting to get tired of all the pressure to get married, and that Sunday was really wishing everyone would just leave me alone,” Sarah admitted. “Little did I know that behind my back there were things going on.” That Sunday at church the missionary couple renewed their acquaintance with the Kalbach family, casually asking questions about Sarah. That evening the Waterlands gave a slide presentation detailing their work in Brazil. Of course, as they

talked about their work they also mentioned their son, who was 31 years old, unmarried, and currently helping them in their ministry. The missionaries spoke of their son’s interests and told the congregation that he sang and played guitar. Additionally, he was attending college and studying languages. Sarah describes in her own words what happened next: “Then they showed his picture. I had been listening with some interest, but when the picture of the handsome blonde came up, I really took notice!” Something stirred inside Sarah, a spark of interest. She found herself wishing that Duane and Dianne Waterland would drop a few more tidbits about their handsome, unmarried son. Wondering why someone like him wasn’t married, Sarah, ever the jokester of the family, leaned over to her mother and whispered, “Man, I need to get his address!” Sarah never expected her mother to take her light-hearted quip seriously, but for some reason this time she did.

David and Sarah (Kalbach) Waterland By Lisa Kilsdonk Fallon County Times, Baker, MT Just when people are about to give up on the idea of a sweet, innocent young lady waiting for her knight in shining armor, there comes the true story romance of Sarah (Kalbach) and David Waterland. (This story was compiled through email exchanges of questions and answers, a fitting venue considering how the bride and groom came to know one another.) Although born in Elkton, Maryland, Sarah Kalbach found herself a resident of Baker, MT in 2005 at the age of 24 when she and her family relocated from Sweet Home, Oregon. That same year Sarah, along with her family joined

the First Baptist Church. It just so happened that an older missionary couple from Brazil visited the church and took notice of Sarah. “I don’t remember them much from that visit, but found out later they had taken a real liking to our family. I didn’t know it then, but they had a son who was single. Nothing happened with that visit, but they never forgot our family, and four years later in 2009 when they came back to our church, they were really looking forward to seeing our family again,” Sarah explained. In the meantime, Sarah went on with life, completely unaware of the series of events that was about to be put in motion. “I’ve never been the kind of girl who dreamed her whole

Brides & Bouquets I had nothing to worry about.” Weeks passed and the matter faded into the background of Sarah’s memory until a letter arrived with a strange postmark. The letter was from Dianne Waterland explaining to Sarah that she’d told her son about her and that he would like to correspond with her. “I went through all kinds of conflicting emotions: anger, fear, embarrassment, and a little spark of excitement,” Sarah recalled. That night Sarah called her older, married sister for advice. “This doesn’t mean you have to marry him,” Sarah was told. “If nothing else it might be fun having a pen pal from a different country. At least get to know him.” Sarah knew her sister’s advice was sound, and she couldn’t deny that deep down, she really wanted to get to know this David Waterland from Brazil. In a last ditch effort to avoid rejection, Sarah emailed David’s mother saying that she would like to correspond with David if, and only if, it was something he wanted to do, not something he was doing to please his parents. Two days later Sarah received an email from David assuring her that the decision to write to Sarah had been left entirely up to him. “I’ll probably never understand it, but the only explanation I have is that it was the Lord that brought us together,” Sarah mused. “That letter was the first of many more! Our relationship was based on letters. The first letters were just getting to know each other. There was so much to learn, as neither of us knew anything about the other. With each letter I started realizing how much alike David and I were. We thought the same, had the

After the service, Mrs. Kalbach marched right up to the Waterlands and struck up a conversation. Speaking with Dianne, she told her all about how she was praying for the right man to come along into her youngest daughter’s life. She then took it one step further and asked Dianne if David would be interested in corresponding with Sarah. At the conclusion of the mothers’ conversation, the two had exchanged addresses, and Dianne couldn’t wait to tell her son David about Sarah. When the family arrived home from church that evening, Sarah’s mother told her everything. “She was already feeling a little guilty, and wondering why she had done such a thing. To say I was upset is an understatement. I had never been so angry in my whole life. I felt ashamed and humiliated, almost like I had been thrown in some guy’s lap. I couldn’t Tfswjoh uif bsfb xjui believe Mom had done what vojrvf dvtupn gmpsbm eftjhot xjui uibu fyusb she did,” Sarah wrote. tqfdjbm upvdi gps uif fyusb tqfdjbm csjef/ Sarah eventually calmed down and decided that the Offering custom fresh or silk florals at chances were pretty slim that affordable prices. this David would ever contact her. “I mean, what kind of guy is going to write to some strange girl that he’s never met, 7 W. same interests, and most importantly, had the same beliefs. Along with the letters we started doing email chats. Since both of us were working, we saved the chats for the weekend. Sometimes it was difficult since there was a five hour difference between us in the winter, but David never minded staying up late. He would be up as late as 2:00 a.m. sometimes, chatting with me. We learned so much about each other during those first few weeks, and started building a very special friendship.” In a funny moment of candor, Sarah addressed the issue of David beginning their relationship sight unseen. “When we first started writing, David’s parents were still in the States and didn’t get back to Brazil until a month later. So it was a month before he got to see a picture of the girl he was writing to. I always tease him about that! What if I had been fat and ugly, I ask him? I know for sure that I would never have been interested in writing to him if I hadn’t seen a picture first.” The couple continued to correspond and chat via email for several months before taking the next step of meeting in person in July 2010. Sarah was quite nervous when David arrived in the States to visit her, until she realized how nervous he was, too. “The highlight for me was when I took him to church the first Sunday. I had managed to keep it a secret from everyone but my family, and did heads ever turn when I walked into the church with a handsome guy at my side! I don’t think anyone concentrated on the sermon that morning. Even my pastor told me he had trouble concentrating,” Sarah wrote, punctuating the final statement with a smiley face. By the end of David’s two week visit, Sarah and David were the best of friends and both

wanted to continue the relationship. In February 2011, it was Sarah’s turn to visit David in Brazil. She loved the tropical beauty of the South American country, but even more importantly, it was on that trip that she came to the realization that she loved David. “Seeing him in his setting, where he was the most comfortable and at ease, talking to the people that knew him best, I realized once again what a very special person he was. It just seemed like the Lord really confirmed it to me, that he was the one.” In talking with David later, it was also during Sarah’s visit to Brazil when David realized that he loved Sarah. “We didn’t say anything to each other about it at the time, but we both felt it.” After Sarah’s return, the two texted, Facebook-ed, emailed and called. “On April 26, 2011, he told me for the first time that he loved me. Then eight long months later he came to see me again, the week between Christmas and New Year’s. On New Year’s Day 2012, he proposed to me, and I didn’t have to think twice about saying ‘Yes!’” In February of 2012, Sarah traveled to Brazil again and spent a week working on wedding plans. They set the date for September 1, 2012. “It was another long wait until our wedding in September, but I was glad for it because it gave me time to plan out a really beautiful wedding. Looking back now, there isn’t one thing I would change about it. Our special day was truly magical for both of us, and was a wonderful day of being together with our families.” Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Waterland! You two are proof that old-fashioned romance is alive and well.

Flowers just one of the questions with weddings By EDDIE HIBBS III

Photo by Eddie Hibbs III While the ownership has changed, the faces remain the same for the most part at the Flower Nook in downtown Bowman. Four years ago, Randi Williams, left, was co-owners of the business, and Danyel Titus, right, was an employee. Today, Titus is the proprietor and Williams is the employee. On Aug. 1, Titus will celebrate her fourth anniversary of purchasing the flower shop.

When the question, “Will you marry me? is asked, if the answer is, “yes, that question becomes just the first question in a long string of questions. Some of those questions pertain to floral arrangements and the Flower Nook in Bowman is just one of several businesses that cater to weddings. “Our business certainly picks up with weddings and holidays, and there are quite a few weddings planned this summer, said Danyel Titus of the Flower Nook. Titus began working for the Flower Nook a dozen years ago, but purchased the company three-and-ahalf years ago. She will celebrate her fourth year as proprietor Aug. 1. Couples, of course, can get married any time they so desire, but a noticeable up tick in the number of weddings begins in April. “One of the most-asked questions pertains to expense – how much do flowers cost? Titus said. Most of Titus’ wedding clients pursue magazines or search the Internet before visiting her store. More often than not, most brides have to downsize a bit. Sometimes, the arrangements in magazines or on the Internet are simply not available. “Most have an idea on how much they want to stay budget-wise, Titus said. Once the bride makes a decision, then the big question is color and

When thinking “wedding economics, Titus also applies a theory of “waste not, though those were not her words. “I try to make the flower arrangements as beneficial as possible by trying to use everything that we order, but not to the point of excessiveness, she added. On average, though there are certainly extremes on both ends, a couple can expect to spend $600 to $800 for flowers for their wedding. “Once we had a wedding approach $2,500 in flowers, Titus said. “That’s a lot of flowers.

Titus said what seems to work best is for brides to start with a list, including numbers (for whom and how many). At that moment, Titus starts thinking a different set of numbers as well. “I try to find the most efficient manner with the color scheme they want with regards to their budget and try to give them what they want, she said. Bowman florist: Brides aren’t afraid of non-traditional Brown with blue, tan with lime green, orange with purple. A busted kaleidoscope? What about strange wedding flower/dress matches? Not necessarily, says Lyn James, owner of Flowers & Cappuccino by Lasting Visions in Bowman. Brides and wedding planners are steering away from “everything has to match.” “Brides are choosing things that are outside of normal, everyday traditions,” James said. “There are more reflections of the bride’s personality.” James said some of the popular wedding flower colors include oranges, fuchsias, reds and purples paired with the likes of brown and even bold-colored dresses. “Now the flowers stand out from the dress,” she said. She added that there are less pastels used in weddings than in the past. Bowman County resident Medora Stevenson, 22, married in December and made her own silk flowers with the help of her mom Yolanda. Light pink and

green were her colors of choice. “I’m kind of an off-the-wall person,” she said. “I like to do things different.” She added that her friends have also gone to the non-traditional flower and dress combo colors for their nuptials. Lasting Visions ships silk wedding flowers all over the

country but locally James said the wedding flower sales are about 50/50 between silk and real. James first started selling silk wedding flowers in 1988. When asked why she thinks contrasting, non-traditional colors are more popular now, she points toward changes in what designers are presenting in bridal magazines, but she adds that today’s bride has more confidence in trying new things. As for types of wedding flowers and displays, those have evolved too. James said roses are traditional, but people are choosing diverse rose colors for weddings. Tulips, ranunculus, lilies and alstroemeria are all wellliked, she added, and they are often mingled together. A popular display style is a hand-tied garden mix with a French-ribbon wrap. She said that bouquet style looks like the flowers were picked out of a garden with stems sometimes showing for a more natural look. James noted that choosing the right flowers and color combina-

She said that if a person isn’t familiar with a florists’ work, they should seek references. “I think flowers are truly the finishing touch and it’s very important to take time to research,” she said. While brides usually play the biggest role in selecting flowers,

James said every now and again a groom does add his thoughts. She also noted that through Lasting Visions’ work on local proms they have built customer trust for the times when those high school students eventually become brides. “We feel privileged and honored to take care of each and every bride regardless of budget,” she said. “We love our brides and our brides’ moms.”

Just a few rules for the guests • Don’t assume that the couple knows you're coming to their wedding. You must send back your reply card before the “Reply byâ€? date. • If you have declined an invitation, you are not expected to send a gift. • If you arrive at the church during the procession, you should wait until the bride has gone down the aisle before entering. Also, don’t peek through the doors to watch because you’ll be in her photos. • If you are late for the ceremony, you should walk down an outside aisle and find a seat quickly and quietly. • If you are of a different faith, you are not required to participate in the rituals, but if you want to that’s fine. • You have to buy the couple a gift. • The gift should be something that they can both use. • If you have sent a wedding gift through the mail, then you don’t have to bring another one to the reception. • It’s wise to give a cash gift to couples that are getting married out-of-town because they will have to ship everything back home and that’s an added cost to them. • Many couples that have lived together for awhile will not register for gifts. That’s because they already have everything they need. In this case, cash in a wedding card is appropriate. • Guests pay for their own transportation and lodgings.

Tips for successful wedding photography Your wedding photography will provide a long-lasting remembrance of one of the happiest days of your life. The right professional photographer should deliver a complete selection of photographs that tell the full story of your day. To help select your professional photographer, keep these thoughts in mind: Hire a professional, don’t trust your wedding memories to a friend with a camera. Interview as many photographers and review as many wedding albums as you can to find the style you like. Reserve your photographer as early as possible. The best photographers tend to be booked months in advance. Ask the following questions: * What packages are offered? * How many photos are included

in each package? * Are the “proofs yours to keep? * Is there a set number of reprints you must order? * What is the cost for additional time or photos? * How much is the deposit and when is it due? * When is the balance due? * Is there a travel charge? * Are the negatives available to purchase? * If so, do you have to wait a specified time before you can purchase them? Most importantly, view his or her photographs. See if you like the style of photography and you seem to interact well with the possible photographer. Also, book as early as possible, some popular dates go quickly.

Do's & Don'ts for the Night Before Your Wedding 1. Don’t drink a lot of alcohol at the rehearsal dinner. Limit yourself to a glass of wine or champagne for toasting at dinner. Instead, drink plenty of water – it will make you feel and look good for your wedding day. 2. Do eat a good dinner. Don’t just nibble – you’ll need plenty of energy for the day ahead. Stay away from spicy foods or rich, heavy desserts. They may give you indigestion and stop you from getting a

good night’s sleep. 3. Don’t go out after the rehearsal dinner. There will be lots of friends, relatives and outof-town guests that will want to see you – but resist the temptation and go home directly after the rehearsal dinner. 4. After the rehearsal dinner, do spend time with people that are close to you‌ your parents, your bridesmaids or your fiancÊ. Try not to be around people that can be annoying or cause you any stress.

5. In addition, do spend some quiet time alone to meditate or visualize your wedding day. Try taking an aromatherapy bath with fragrant candles and soft music and just relax! Use this time to really visualize your wedding day. Picture it clearly (with details) in your mind – everything flowing perfectly! 6. Don’t over do it! The night before the wedding is not the time to be putting together your favors or to begin packing for the honeymoon. Make sure you

plan accordingly and have everything done before the rehearsal dinner – if not, ask for help!! 7. Do go to sleep early. This may be difficult with all of the excitement. Allow yourself some time to wind down after the rehearsal dinner and before you climb under the covers. Do something you enjoy that relaxes you, such as reading a book or listening to soothing music. The bath may help you get drowsy!
