Class 140. Field Crops and Grains
All grain exhibits must be one quart samples, exhibited in a one quart zip lock bag or clear container. Samples must be from the current cropping year. Grain samples need to be hand-picked, but they should be run over the kicker mill at the elevator. Variety should be listed on the entry tag. Top exhibits can be shown at the North Dakota Winter Show and the State Spring Wheat Show. Section 1. Wheat a. Durum b. Hard Red Spring c. Winter 2. Barley 3. Oats 4. Rye 5. Flax 6. Millet 7. Grain and Forage Bundles To make grain, grass and millet sheaves: Select uniform high quality plants, Spread the grain plants out in a sheltered area and allow to dry for one day. Strip off all leaves, taking care not to break the straw in handling. Form a core of 30 to 40 stems, then place the other stems around the core to form a sheaf 7-9 inches in circumference (around) at a point half way between the heads and the butt. Tie the bundle firmly in three places. Use cord which will not cut the straw. Form the crown (heads) in a rounded shape by moving the core up and down. Cut off the butt squarely and hand-tie the sheaf with the heads down until exhibited. Section 1. Wheat sheaf a. Durum b. Spring c. Winter 2. Barley 3. Oats 4. Flax 5. Rye 6. Millet 7. Any other seed To make a forage sheaf: Select the leafiest types to be found in the field and cut close to the ground. Do not strip a single leaf or branch from the stem as forage should retain its color and leaves. In make up a show bundle, select those individual stems that have retained the most and best leaves with their color. Make bundles from 3 to 5 inches in diameter (across) or 9.5 to 11 inches in circumference (around) tied securely once at a point 1/3 from the base and tied a second time loosely once about half way up to prevent spreading. Corn, Sudan, Sorghum, and Milletsheaves should be tied three times at uniform spacings. Section 8. Crested Wheat Grass Forage 9. Sudan Grass Forage 10. Corn Forage 11. Alfalfa Forage 12. School Exhibits
1. Exhibit material that was made this year. If children take the materials home, ask them to return it as soon as possible so that it isn’t damaged or lost. The children will be proud to exhibit their work at the county fair and will be glad to return it to school after the parents have seen it. 2. Follow the premium list and see that every article that is to be judged is labeled according to the list. Tags will be supplied to each teacher in the spring. Please do not write on the artwork. Tags are to be placed in the lower left hand corner on all flat exhibits. 3. No exhibits will be awarded a ribbon unless they are properly tagged. The teacher is responsible for loss or improperly tagged exhibits. 4. All booklets are to have a front and back cover. At least six pages are required. 5. Any misspelling on any exhibit will drop the exhibit at least one ribbon placing. 6. Emphasis should be put on inexpensive or free material rather than on commercial products that show no ingenuity on the part of the pupil. Use of patterns, traced, or copied material is discouraged. 7. The Fairboard may allow the sum of $100 to be divided among the blue ribbon exhibits. All exhibits that are properly classified will be ribboned with blue, red, or white ribbons. 8. Exhibits should not exceed 12" x 18" in size. Oversize articles may be displayed but may not be judged. 9. Teachers are responsible for putting up the school exhibits and for removing the exhibits at the close of the fair. Any material left at the booth will be destroyed. 10. Each student is allowed to exhibit no more than 10 projects total. There will be no more than 2 items per category per student.
