Soil Salinity by Jon Stika, NRCS
What is Soil Salinity? Salt Content of the soil Salt affected soils are caused by excess accumulation of salts, typically at the soil surface Salts are transported to the sol surface by capillary transport from salt laden water below soil surface due to evaporation (~16”). As soil salinity increases, the increase in salt at or near the soil surface can result in degradation of both soil & vegetation Where do salts in the soil come from? The bio-chemical or geo-chemical breakdown of rocks, sand, silt & clay The parent material of some soils were once the bottom of the sea Fertilizers or other amendments (lime, gypsum, manure) that contain salts Managing to Reduce Soil Salinity Reduce water evaporation from the soil surface Keep soil covered with crop residues or growing plants Increase water transpiration through plants Perennial vegetation Crop rotation intensity/ cover crops Apply less salt to the soil Grow legumes as a nitrogen source Improve soil quality to increase nutrient cycling Improve soil quality to increase water infiltration Move water and salts down and away from soil surface Keep Soil Temperatures as cool as possible to reduce evaporation

What’s New in Solar Power
If you are unfamiliar with solar power you might be asking yourself, where is this type of technology used? In SW North Dakota we use it for pumping water for livestock where eclectic power is unavailable. Our office has assisted over 30 producers with this type of equipment. Some of the old myths in solar power are no longer issues. (1) You can only lift water 100 feet or less. Totally false; The deepest well we are pumping here in the area is 330 feet of lift. Lorentz has a pump out that can lift water up to 3,200 at 3 GPM, using solar. (2) It will only pump in full direct sun. False again; Even in overcast skies, your solar system will pump some water. Just not as much as in full sun. (3) Do I need some kind of storage? Yes; We recommend having some storage reserve. In very cloudy weather your solar system will not produce gallons needed in one day. We recommend having 3 days worth of water supply. You don’t need luck of the Irish to grow a shamrock. Give it moist soil and cool Irish nights– night temperatures in the 50’s are best. Don’t worry if the plant turns yellow after a few months, the plant is just starting to rest. If this happens, just ease up on watering and report the bulbs in fall. Shredded wood from evergreens is fine for use as mulching. Overwatering is the #1 killer of young transplant seedlings. This causes stem rot. Avoid watering seedlings when the soil is already moist. The use of sterile, soilless mixes will also prevent diseases. March is the best month for pruning leafy trees and shrubs. The stress of pruning to dormant plants is minimal and the wounds will heal nicely when spring arrives. Ornamental grasses can be clipped back to the ground in late March before new growth begins. This will promote faster re-growth. Now is the most important time to feed birds. Their sources of natural food are scarce now. Early arriving robins will appreciate a snack of raisins!

The Bowman County High school will be partnering with the area’s Emergency Responders to act out a “Prom Crash” scenario. This event is to take place at the Bowman County High School at 2pm on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Some of our very own SADD students will act as pretend victims of a car crash. Emergency responders will respond to the school and treat the scene as they would a real one. Angel Air Care will bring a medical helicopter to land in the practice field as well. The goal is to portray what could happen while drinking and driving. If we can prevent even one fatality by doing this, we will consider it a success.

CARD OF THANKS The family of Eva Sedevie would like to thank everyone who braved the cold and those who were with us in spirit to celebrate Mom’s life. It was said that they were the coldest two days we’ve had in several years. We are finally thawing out. Mom would have been overwhelmed as we were by the love, prayers, cards, flowers, plants, memorials and food brought to the house and the many acts of kindness shown to us during her hospital stays as well as after her unexpected passing. We were blessed to have her for so many years. She had 90 years, but it is never easy to say goodbye. Special thanks to Dr. Hoerauf and the Dr.’s and staff of the WRHS at the Bowman Clinic, Hettinger Hospital, Dr. Lanchbury, and to the Dr.’s and staff at the SWHS who so lovingly cared for Mom through the years and her most recent hospital stays in both hospitals. Many thanks also to the ambulance squad. We also want to thank Father Steven Folarunso from Hetinger for the comforting services, the pallbearers, Ken for helping with the ambulances and leading the rosary service, Trevor and Rick for your caring support and friendship, Kynda, Karne, Nancy and Gina for the family supper
